Wow, go figure. An off grid channel posting off grid content! Very nice!! No conspiracy theories here! Way to go Jay and Jen👍
Thanks buddy.....appreciate this comment for sure. It's hard to keep up when most other have so much DRAMA in life, lol
@@OffgridwithJayandJenI agree, I can’t watch a lot of them because of the click bait title’s and drama to get views. From one Michigander to another! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼
I can appreciate both sides, because going off the grid doesn't work if you don't understand it's purpose...
Cognitive dissonance much there Dave??? ⚠️⚠️⚠️ Don't challenge Dave's limited views of this earth or he loses his shit 💩💩💩!!! Pathetic! Please Dave go back to sleep 😴 & go live in a totally safe city where you're govt will take care of you always! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 #hilarious
How do you take care of this system in the winter? Thank you
AWESOME! The best DIY videos you have done so far. We survive on three food grade 55 gal drums for our in-house-water. We fill our 55 gal drums ~twice a week from a spring about 900-feet up the mountain. The pipe from the spring runs 24/7 in the winter to a dried creek bed so it does not freeze. In the summer we run the water pipe to a "Y" joint from the spring to our garden and house and use a "drip field timer" to water the garden.
Great job folks! Thanks for sharing. 73 & God Bless
That is awesome!
Thank you for this video. I’m building an off grid cabin in Missouri and rain catchment is how I will be getting water. By the way, taking food grade totes to a coin-op car wash is a great way to clean them out.
love it, good luck my friend
I’m a retired milkman in RI, we used those totes to transport cream to another dairy that makes ice cream and other totes to pick up apple cider from orchards
Nice
To double the capacity at the pole barn, you could put a tote on all four corners and raise the gutter in the center to split the water to both corners on each side of the barn. One gutter could then fill two separate totes. So side A would fill totes 1 & 2 , and side B would fill totes 3 & 4. I love the system you have. I just wish some of the totes were elevated closer to the gutters to allow you to use gravity to move the water. Something to consider if you add more totes. A stand should be easy to do with a couple of 4x4's and some 2x6's. What do you think? Stay safe and God Bless!
We actually have 4 more totes on the way.....stay tuned to see how we hook them up
@@OffgridwithJayandJen Never too many totes and never too many solar panels
We collect rain water off of our home to water our garden, flowers, and fruit trees in blue plastic rain barrels we purchase from the Amish. I hope to get an IBC tote this summer.
Hi guy's, Nice water setup for sure. You could also add 1 or 2 to the back of the house to fill the garden tank. You can also connect 2 tanks together at the bottom end with short piece of pvc pipe. For those times when you get extra rain fall. Love the gravity feed line down to garden idea..
Great ideas buddy. Thanks
I like this. Once you get your mind around not "needing a well" (commercially drilled well). Something like this is great and affordable.
We agree 👍
Great video. I appreciate your use of God’s resources-you use what you need but you aren’t wasteful! Love and prayers.
I love are Berkey,cost a bit,but lasts a very long time
Yes, but worth it for sure
Water - the essence of life. You two have a good plan.
You could create an overflow dig a large hole approx 3.5' x 7' in the ground, line it with plastic sheeting, build a simple wood framework with a brace half way on the long side over the hole and use a sheet of 3/4"plywood to cover. This overflow water comes in handy for the garden during the long hot summer.
You got to do what you got to do.
Looks like this plan works great for you.
Thanks for taking the time to share with those that could benefit from it.
Praying that you will have all the rain you need.
This is good video! Helping us with idea for our small cabin at the pond
Wow, and I was just praying today that you would be able to get a well dug before summer kicks in!! But God has given you another gift in learning how to catch your own water, and it seems to be working out well for you and your needs. So happy to see this video and know that you all are doing well with water. I agree, at least 2 more totes would be good to have. Thank you for sharing everything with us. God bless you and have a great day and evening.
- Noticed standing water on top totes. Consider a ball or other similar object under the cover that will elevate the cover enough to drain the standing water.
You guys are on top of it. I admire you. Jay you are a jack of all trades. And your Jen is just the cutest thing. Both of you are smart and have what it takes to do this. I dont even know you and Im proud of you both.
You are so kind Linda......appreciate you very much 😊
I'm excited to set up our first catchment tote for watering our animals. Thanks for the info!
Hi Jay and Jen 👋🏻 Hope everything is working out ok 🤞🏻Stay safe and take care my friends 😊God Bless 🙏🏻 Appreciate you!
Thank you! You too!
Love this, we started catching rain water to water our flowers 👍
Very nice
Wow! Sounds like you've got it all under control. You 2 are really good at this off-grid stuff and that's great. Not having to deal with corporate corruption and bs has to be a satisfying thing. Maybe in my next life I'll live off the grid, a bit late for me now. 😁 Lots of good information for the future. 👍
I use a rain barrel for my garden started in 2020 love it. Love from Virginia
Hi Jen and Jay. I enjoy your videos. I especially enjoy thought process on each project.
Thank you so much!
Thanks for the great info! I will order the socks for my pool skimmer! Those are a lot cheaper than the ones at the pool supply store!
Woot woot
The rain rules! … Good job.
Glad you have some rain now , rainwater catchment is such a great alternative. Thank you for sharing~!
Great video. We also live off grid without a well. Our cistern is in the basement of the cabin. We don’t have a hot water heater, so we only have cold running water. For our shower we have a small pump with an RV filter. We put about 4 gallons of warm water in the tub and drop the intake in the tub. We can shower both of us in 4 gallons of water.
Very nice
Fantastic! Thank you! I have a well, a rain catchment system, a spring, and a lake, so I always have plenty of water. I also have a vertical hydroponic growing system inside 2 huge heatable greenhouses, so I always have food. Anyone can have a permanently growing food crop this way, with very little work. The work involved in my system after planting is simply adding liquid fertilizer twice a year to the barrel of my automatic watering system, which is powered by solar. No other work is needed until after harvest, when the system is sterilized. I invented this system and it produces more food than any other similar system in the world, so of course it outgrows ANY system using acreage. Using this system, there is no need for acreage other than room for a very large greenhouse, of which I have two. I can feed my own family, my extended family, the neighborhood, a couple of food banks and sell microgreens to high end restaurants, all my simply using my noggin.
Any info on your systems that you'd care to share? I'm interested in off grid living in the suburbs on our lot. Can you explain more? And where did you get your liquid fertilizer that you use?
Good informational vid Jay and Jen. Thanks for sharing. Great being off grid and self sufficient.
Thank you. Need to set up for my garden.
Hi Jay ~n~ Jen I'm new to your channel. Great job on your system you have there. I also am a faithful rain catcher lol. We have spring water and we desperately need rain. Please send rain down this way. Im in Western Pennsylvania near Greensburg. Its great to see off grid couples. Keep up the great work than yinz are doing. Im looking forward on your next videos. Oh hey Jen I'm also a Temu shopper fan lol. Have a great one God Bless yinz both. 🌹✝️🌹
Thanks for subscribing and following along with us! Truly appreciate it and glad to have you here!
@@OffgridwithJayandJen I'm happy to be here 😁
Thank you so much I will be doing this on my off grid land in Oklahoma.
Seem like good honest people. Nice informative video so thanks for sharing the info. Will be looking out for more content from y’all
Thank you guys for putting so much time into this video. Unfortunately I'm not off grid but am trying to learn how to gather rain water. Saving all your info.
Love and enjoy watching your videos. May the lord bless and protect you Jay and Jen and the rain catchment
Thank you Brenda
Really informative video - what’s needed, the purpose, links to source. Great job, guys!😍🇨🇦
love you guys!
Thanks!
That’s cool I love rain catchment
Your water is definitely cleaner than most all city water
Thanks for sharing how you rain catch your water.
For what I have gone through the last few weeks this video was so calming. thank you. I live on 5 acres in the city limits. Anything at the edge of town is impossible to find. I sure wish I could.
Nice setup guys!
Id love to start rain catchment myself you two certainly have it going on very nice direction and showing us what you do with the various projects always helpful. thank you folks . love your dogs , Timber has such a cute smile lol.
Liking your videos Jay and Jen. Will be watching.
Love this video so many great ideas for my off grid project ❤😊
I followed your example. I've only got one type set up so far, but I have plans for several more. I will be using the links you shared for the connectors and the soxs.
Awesome. Thank you and good with your set up as well
Good deal!
I LOVE rain and our rain catchment. Lol. Until the totes fill up and dribble dribble down the tank under our bedroom. We need a solution for that too. Too noisy! Food grade can also mean oil which sucks and so difficult to clean out. Blah! PITA! Jay you're getting all wet. Jen is smart wearing the rain jacket 😜. Temu is cheap but I'm so skeptical to buy anything from them. We got our covers from Amazon. Nice informative video guys! 👍
What's dripping under your bedroom? Over flow?
@@OffgridwithJayandJen yeah, just the overflow. Nothing major, just annoying when everything is sooo silent!
I think one inch of rain on a 400 square foot roof will give you almost 250 (249.35) gallons of water. One gallon = 231 cubic inches; one square foot (12 inches X 12 inches) with one inch of rain = 144 cubic inches; 144 cubic inches per sq. ft. X 400 sq. ft.= 57600 cubic inches; 57600 divided by 231 cubic inches per gallon = 249.35 gallons
Sounds about right
Very smart.
Glad you two are off grid and thriving, and that you’re basically going to double your water with another 1100 gallons of storage! Since getting water in winter is a Frequently Asked Question, why don’t you put a link to the Winter Water video in the next Update? I’m impressed with your site, how many years have you two been working on it?
Hi Jay and Jen. Thank you for sharing projects from your off grid property. I live off grid also, in the Idaho mountains. Been following you guys for several years. Your place is looking great! So much hard work has been put into every project. I appreciate the quality content of your TH-cam channel. Sincerely

Hey Terry......it means a lot to hear this my friend. Appreciate you being here all this time. 😊❤️
I, just love you guys life style 😊❤
Great video! You two have it figured out down to a perfect system!
It’s handy to have the tanks in different locations on the property!
We are really very happy with the set up. 😊
Thank you for this! Very good
Glad it was helpful!
You are closing on 50K!
So exciting! :D
Amazing!! I have seen the tanks stacked two high plumed to take the overflow of the top one ?? that might help.. Man you are doing great!!! Living the dream!!
Thanks for taking the time to walk us through your system in depth! Always appreciate you guys showing us what works and what doesn’t, and you guys don’t tout your way as the only way. Hope you get all the rain you need and your garden goes crazy. Best wishes from Canada!
Thank you my friend
What great information - thank you for sharing your set up and experience with water catchment! Following.
Glad you found it useful....glad we can share things from our experience now. 😊👍
Jay, when Jen buys you a new TRACTOR for Father’s Day, you’ll be able to bury your tanks to avoid winter freeze up!?!?!? Great vid-Thanks for sharing…IAG, eh!!! 🇨🇦
Lots of great information here. You have done a remarkable job with your set up for rain catchment.
Thanks 👍
Thank you for shareing your video,i really enjoy the way you present your content keep it real and simple. thank you.
Hey guys, Fantastic video love to learn how you guys manage your water even here in the city.I keep water around in big containers in case we lose water pressure. Thanks for sharing take care Paul.
That's smart buddy......can't hurt to have some extra emergency water around. 😊
Great content you guys! I always learn from watching you two.
Awesome! Thank you!
thanks for all the info my friends
Our pleasure!
Love your channel! I'm also here in the mitten & have desired since I was a child to live remote, may this year be the year if it's in Divine order. I love this video on the IBC totes, they are something I also have on my list, everyone I know loves theirs. I think its wise your way to have several in different spots. I've heard of covering them in fresh mulch to help keep them from freezing, not sure what I'll do but I'll figure it out come winter. I wish there was a way to move them on sturdy wheel base. I put my 55gal barrel on an industrial garden dolly & it made it easier to move. Thanks so much for the cover & sock tips & please remain prosperous safe & thriving☺
Love this my friend.
Good setup!! J & C
Well I guess its working. You don't have any strange appendages growing out of your neck. Lol It works for you guys and that's all that matters. Water catchment is like solar panels and battery's you just want more and more. Just keep getting those totes the more the better.
😂
When you live off grid you learn how to reduce your usage of water. Being single I only use 15 gallons of water a week. You don't leave the sink or shower run. You get wet shut it off, lather up and then rinse. You become very aware of what you are doing.
Curious, I'm also in northern Michigan with off grid camp. Our area is pretty good for hand driven sand point wells.
We just pounded one for a cousins camp. 24 foot, water tests great and with hand pump, pipe, deive couplers and sand point we were at just under $600. I too collect rain water, I think gardens thrive more on rain water than my 46 degree well water. Subbed and enjoying your content!
Wow guys Impressive, keep up the good. Remember good for the Enough for the bush. Take care ❤❤.
Woot woot
Whater is life,! And life is wather. 3😊 hi from sweden
So true my friend
I would do 1 large 1,000 gallon that catches the overflow from the totes off the pole barn. Cut it into the side of the hill behind the barn. Drought insurance.
Good idea

U guys are awesome thanks for the tips👌
Woot woot
Just came across you guys channel and this is so great 👍 I'm looking to purchase an acre with off grid everything
Go Michigan!
Woot woot
I painted an IBC black, and the water was 100 degrees all summer.
We have 10,000 gallon water storage on one property that's a water haul. And 5,000 gallons on our well water storage.
if you go to Brent Hitch Farm they bought really large black rain catchment barrels --not sure on what they paid for them but they are huge
I moved off grid last August from Texas to a beautiful mountain in southern Missouri. I would love to know what pump you use to move that water? I'm an avid gardener working with nothing but rock, so using what I have to build raised beds for my back because I'm not getting any younger! 😂 Right now I'm toting water by the bucket to the garden. TIA Texas Deb 😊
I am in Gaylord. PFAS has contaminanted the Ausable and our aquafirs.
I have heard a bit about that
Great and informative video. Would running pvc 1 inch from each tote to transfer each tote at will tied together from the barn make it easier to move your water to the main house tote be better than hoses? You could transfer your water by using valves to open and close each tote. Would a 1000 gallon tank buried in the ground prevent you from having frozen water in the winter? Would a wood stove in the pole barn melt the snow off of the roof give you more melted water in the winter?
I saw someone else bury a tank underground so they had water in the winter that wouldn’t freeze. Thought that looked like a good idea. I have 1 tote now at our land that I bring water from home to fill. I only have a small shed to catch water for now.
I had an auncle who had slick set up in New mexico. He put like telephone poles by his windmill and mounted a water tank on top and ran the pipe to the house. It was just like ciy water at the tap cause of the head pressure., LOL!
Nice
bore a Shallow Well, only 20 to 25' deep you can find water, with a 2" intake / discharge pump and water. Locate well spot with dowsing rods. look it up on youtube, put 1" pvc pipe with a well point, use a shallow well pump 1 hp to pump water up to a tank. good for watering plants etc.
love this vid guy's.was thinking you could have at least 4 more tots. doing the math.which would be 4 for the gardens. the rest for yourselvesl linked in where you have tots now. . you could also get a few where you were orginaly as you have buildings there to catch garden water. with out too much extra effort. phil
Thanks for the video, I am also an offgridder utilizing rain water catchment for 6 years now....for most purposes it works well. I have a hard time with laundry water, have you solved that?
We do Laundry some Here and some off site. Our washing machine doesn't seem to use all that much water.
Have you looked into having a drain trap that has a drain plug on it ... to have the rain water to pass through first.. Can you put in a cistern as an optional storage .. multiple storage
Seems like one of the most important thinks to talk about is winter. No. Michigan gets darn cold. So what do you do for ,maybe. 5 to 6 months?
Actually last year we went until Jan with water -mild temps helped. But in the winter we do this th-cam.com/video/RAh4FJDDb7I/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qymbCVK57y-fQPAu
Good ol’ sock filter 😂
Gets it done alright......Best wishes my friends
If you could position properly, I would dedicate a tote to micro water your garden plants with a pinhole drip hose grid. The tubing and fittings are dirt cheap. Great video!
I'm trying to figure out irrigation too.....😊👍
❤
I use them for my sump 😅
walk your land by the cabin //put a well pint down you find a under ground stream //I put in 5 well points 1/14 pipe // my driver was 4 foot long pipe 3 inch and I weld a steel block at 1 end //my steel block was 3 inch thick block of steel as my driver pipe over the well point //this will drive the well point down
Have you guys also thought about a shallow well with a pitcher pump ?
We tried that last summer, th-cam.com/video/eVCgOW3fqWs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tqz9y8g5zTOlnlg3
Did not have much success, will try some other things soon, going to borrow a tool from a friend.
@@OffgridwithJayandJen I dug mine with a hand auger from Amazon. Then buy 4 - 5’ pieces of 3/4” galvanized water pipe that you can screw onto it and keep going deeper with it. That is a lot cheaper and a lot easier than a sand point and hammering, lol . I hit water at 10’ and went down another 9’ for a total of 19’. Took me about 5 hours to do it
Very cool! What do you do to winterize the totes and ensure you have water in the winter?
th-cam.com/video/RAh4FJDDb7I/w-d-xo.html
This is what we do in the winter for water. We just drain the tanks once the freezing temps set in and do the snow melt.
I collect rainwater but I painted mine to match my house. I don’t mind a bit of algae as I don’t drink it. I just use it to wash and garden watering.
Nice
