@@jeanxx5745, The Paraguay War, or also called the Triple Alliance War, was the Greatest War between Countries and their Borders of the American Continent, which is why it demanded more Resources and Area of Conflict, just to have an Idea, the Zone of War of this Conflict extended to almost all the Silver Hydrographic Basin that is the Second largest of the World, second only to the Amazon.
While the US Civil War had the highest death toll of nearly One Million, it must be remembered that the Paraguay War lasted far longer than the American Civil War, five years and two weeks long, not to mention that the Paraguay War was much more Brutal, because in
Towards the end of this Conflict, Paraguay had the Audacity to recruit Children, Women and the Elderly, as there was no Adult Population to fight.

In some books it is stated that a small group of men, along with women and children were serving the army by finding weapons, food, etc. These people unfortunately tripped into the Brazilian army and fought what we now know as the Batalla de Acosta Ñu. Shortly after the gunfire started, el Mariscal noticed it and sent 500 men commanded by Bernardino Caballero.
The battle was lost by the Paraguayans, and the kids fought for their lives, not because they were forced. At least that's what this book said.
Another interesting fact: Among the kids in Acosta Ñu there was Emilio Aceval, the kid who would someday be president.

The American Civil War (same time period) was the most costly war the US has fought (since both sides were Americans). 2% of Americans (620,000) died in it, and ironically a majority of them were deaths from disease.
Paraguay starts a war trying to impose a coup on Uruguay, draws Brazil into it, makes the voluntary choice to declare war on Argentina, and ends up losing 60% of its population (around 400,000 men), over three quarters of all losses suffered in that war.
Bravo Francisco Solano Lopez. You deserve a Darwin Award for that one.

This comment has quite a few inaccuracies, but the most blatantly ignorant are:
      1. The War began with the Brazilian invasion of Uruguay.
      2. Paraguay trying to impose a coup in Uruguay? Paraguay supported the White Party, which was democratically elected. The opposition, supported by Brazil, was the one who carried out a coup.
      3. The declaration of war on Argentina is given after it has allowed the passage of Brazilian troops for an invasion of Paraguay, which constitutes a full-fledged Causus beli.

Just a small correction: the disputed territories at the north of Paraguay were under the control of Brazil at the begining of the war. Other than that excellent work. I think this is the best one Ive seen so far. Also, Ive never read about 50k deaths of brazilian civlians, where did that happen? The invasion of MS and RS were not that deadly.

Paraguay only exists today thanks to the Emperor Pedro II of Brazil. After the war, the president of Argentina suggested to Brazil to split Paraguay between the two victorious nations. On the other hand, the Emperor expected that the next enemy (of a possible future war) would be against Argentina and it would be helpful to have the less frontier as possible with Argentina. However, time has proven them to be allies of Brazil in several other issues along time. Today, Brazil have no interest with Paraguai, as they export drugs and weapons by smuggling to Brazil and protect wanted criminals of Brazil and etc.

Such a sad loss of this brutal war, which had very negative impact on natural environment...RIP Glaucous Macaw and also 60% of Paraguay population along with soldiers of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina who fought and died in this war... When will they ever learn..

Francisco Solano Lópes was killed with a spear by a cavalry man know in Brazil as ''Chico Diabo'', roughely translated, as ''Francis the Devil'', he earned 100 cows for the deed, although the order was that Solano was to be taken alive, he also kept the golden sword of Solano, you can see both the Sword and the spear at Rio de Janeiro National Museum.
