      @@afterdinnercreations936 I guess you missed the part where they almost had him out until the cave in 😒 then they re-opened the squeeze and it collapsed AGAIN despite the walls of the cave being reinforced by the workers there. Perhaps you just enjoy being a contrarian. In summary, they almost had him out, it caved in, the work crew reinforced the walls for Floyds would be rescuers, it collapsed again anyways, they tried to dig straight down, got close, then had setback after setback. Boulders, rain, then ice, all slowing them down. Yes, Floyd was almost out, and after all the effort they put in they must have felt absolutely crushed when they found him dead. Also, three days is a super short amount of time. That's literally the average turnover for a response from a business after you submit paperwork XD oh man, looking at your channel you may actually be a child or teenager, my b kiddo, it's not your fault. To answer your question about Geralt. Keep in mind that the first 23 hours no one knew where Floyd was. So in context Geralt only took 2 days to get to Floyd. It's not like modern times when you can just call someone and they can quickly make their way over to someone. It likely took a little for Geralt to get the message in the first place.

    • @m.hunterstevie2081
      @m.hunterstevie2081 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Two other points of context… Floyd’s story was the third-biggest non-political story between WW1 and WW2. IH tells you what #1 was: Charles Lindbergh’s trans-Atlantic flight, the first flight ever from NYC to Paris… and that’s still 2 years into the future from when Floyd got trapped… and he didn’t fly that in a 747.
      Remember 20 years ago? Oh man… things were so different then. I was like, “Man, those effects in The Matrix movie were so sick~!” Well, 20 years before Floyd getting trapped, things were pretty different too… since that was around the time the Wright Brothers were getting famous for something. What was that again? Oh right, a flying machine with a motor…
      So yes, it took a lot longer for people to move around… according to IH’s hour markers, it looks like it might have taken Homer about 7-8 hours to get there from Louisville which is actually quite close… and he received the news directly. The fact that Gerald was there that quickly from wherever he was and potentially without being directly contacted is pretty amazing.

    There was a lot more water in the coffee and whiskey of the time, so they did provide hydration. The coffee had been boiled and alcohol has been used for millenia to purify water. Just giving him the "pure" water available at the time would have likely given him diarrea.

      Right? Coffee and tea are basically just hot water with a bit of plant extracts. Now I assume it’s not like how IH presents it, where there seems to be an open bucket of old coffee there with a ladle… but even cold coffee would have been a source of hydration. I also doubt highly that IH has included every single instance of Floyd being provided food and drink in this video.

    Regarding that question about where Johnnie Gerald had been before he showed up, I checked out a different documentary about this whole thing on a channel called Scary Interesting, which sheds a bit of light on that.
    The thing is, Floyd was *really* good at cave exploring. He was so good at it, he legitimately didn't understand why so few people could get to him, because he didn't see any of that whole route as that big of a deal. When Johnnie first heard about Floyd's situation, he basically thought "Well, it's Floyd. He can handle it." It was only after a couple days passed and Floyd was still stuck that he realized "Oh shit, this is actually serious." and made his way over.
    Another thing I felt was interesting that Internet Historian didn't get into was that Johnnie was a bigger guy than Homer, Miller, and Burden, and at first couldn't get through that last tunnel. He had to spend three hours widening it just to reach Floyd in the first place.

    I see a lot of reactors wonder why they gave Floyd coffee or other drinks instead of water, and I have a reason why: back then water purifying was not easy for ordinary people and anyone who drank it kept getting risk infections like cholera, so they had to hydrate with other fluids. Coffee, milk, alcohol, tea, and soda was preferred. Also, orange juice wasn't around until the end of WW2.

      "When Johnnie Gerald first heard that Floyd Collins was stuck in a cave, he shrugged, boarded a yellow school bus, and spent his evening chaperoning the local high school boys’ basketball team. The news did not trouble him. Gerald had explored caves with Collins. He knew that if anybody could wiggle out of a jam, it was his friend.
      But after two days, Gerald felt a creeping dread and visited Sand Cave."

    The whole tourism to see his body or the crowds gathering for the rescue. Got to remember there was a time people used to picnic while overlooking at active battlefields. And there was those traveling shows where you'd pay money to see the corpse of some criminal in a tent. I remember 1 was a guy who was killed trying to rob a train and tourists would put coins in his mouth. Then the body eventually got misplaced and sold until it was found in a funhouse where the owners didn't realize they purchased a real body until it fell over and they doing bones and coins.

    To be a bit more fair towards Floyd trying to trap that other man in the cave with him, fear makes you do crazy things! Floyd was way closer to death than that man was, that guy could've easily survived the four days it took to dig down to him from above - Floyd couldn't...and didn't. He couldn't feed himself, hydrate or keep warm without help - especially once the lightbulb went out. On the other hand, Floyd didn't know if they were going to be able to get out at all, but I doubt he thought that far ahead, he just wanted to not be alone. The sad part is, if that man stayed; he might've been able to keep Floyd alive for the 4+ days, strategically giving him the coffee, keeping his morale up and using body heat to keep him warm. He still might've perished regardless, but I believe it would've helped him hang on a little longer at the very least - as the hopelessness would've contributed to Floyd giving up when he did.
    I completely understand both Floyd's plea AND the man's decision to evacuate the cave, I judge neither harshly at all.

      @KodakanLP ปีที่แล้ว

      the digging took almost 11 days tho.. 4 days was only the amount of time the light bulb has been out for when they reached him

    • @PeninsulaPaintings
      @PeninsulaPaintings ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KodakanLP Okay, yes that's true - I forgot to contextualize the whole ordeal. But still, it's possible to survive that long without food and little water (the coffee was still next to Floyd when he left). Not easily, but it can be done. The body can survive without food for a month if you've got water and are healthy. Again, I don't blame the man for leaving at all - it's just a thought.

      Journalists have always been sensationalist. It's just that back then, they had no way of having a constant, 24/7 news cycle like we can now because of TV and the interesting and other technology, so they had to prioritize their stories more.

    Coffee is technically a tea, and tea is usually bad for you if you’re dehydrated because it makes you excrete more liquids. I think the source material used for the video doesn’t mention water because it’s obvious he can’t survive 15 days without it, coffee, whiskey and milk are 100% not enough.
