With respect to the Dev Room (the secret room with all the items in the game in it):
Every Fallout game has the dev room, but technically speaking, you're not *supposed* to be able to access it. But in previous Fallout games, if you did, it wasn't that big of an issue because the only person affected by it was you. But in Fallout 76, there's an in-game economy, there's PvP balance, and (of course) there's a cash shop that Bethesda wants people to buy from. But if you can just waltz into the dev room and get anything you want, there's little incentive to engage with all of that. Just walk in, get the best gear in the game, and ruin the game for everyone else.

I still think this and The Engoodening of No Man's Sky are the perfect duo. One is the tale of a video game giant who just doesn't seem to care, and fucked up at pretty much every turn. The other is the story of an indie dev making promises it couldn't keep, but buckling down and making it happen in spite of all the negative press.
So, if you want a good video essay on New Vegas, especially with how it compares to Bethesda's Fallout 3, Hbomberguy made a video titled "Fallout New Vegas is Great, And Here's Why" that really illustrates what made Obsidian such a good developer despite their circumstances.

Just as a heads up, the Dev Room is a place for Bethesda to test out different items in the game while the game is being made.
It's not something players are supposed to be able to get to ever through normal play and is only accessible by inputting console commands to teleport in.
In previous games, it wasn't a problem for players to access them because they were single-player games. But in 76, an MMO, getting access destroys the game and makes the cash shop nearly pointless.

    • @HiddenWindshield

Also, it should be noted, this was their first open world game I believe. Plus procedural generation, and a massive scale. It was lots of inexperienced programmers, still learning, failing, and then continuing to strive to learn and grow, and it shows.

Still doesn't excuse them actually attempting to make Fallout 76 on an engine that in no way can support it.

I've heard people say how they've lost all respect and trust for Bethesda.... I didn't quite understand it.... But omfg this is SCUFFED.......
I play 76 and the updates recently are ok for playing, for a while I was really into it (bc f4 is so buggy on my series s that I can't leave the intro house) so it was nice seeing a higher quality fallout game. The endgame is meh and the story is meh but it's still something to do and the content is fairly fun in the moment. The community of 76 is so fucking wholesome. It's a regular practice for high lvl players to shower new players with gifts that'll help them power lvl like crazy. Honestly the main reason I still play it is because I'm setting up a base right near the starting point of 76 and giving new players a whole kit of stuff that they can use to boost themselves into the midgame in a couple less weeks than otherwise. I feel like the community who backed Bethesda got utterly shafted by Bethesda with this whole 76 thing and as far as I can tell, they're still immensely wholesome people to play with. I play 76 continuously now ONLY because of the community. There's not really much of an endgame to chase, so the reason I play is because the other players are just such awesome people that the game feels fun even if there's not a super huge amount to do. If it wasn't for all the help and gifts and cool people I met and now the chance to help out new players too, I know I would've stopped playing before now and I would've uninstalled to play another game.

Like, I totally get that people were rightfully upset and disappointed with this particular game, but what weirded me out was how people started acting as if this was typical for Bethesda, rather than an anomaly. When talking about Starfield coming out, at least some people were extremely skeptical because "Bethesda make bad games, remember FO76?" No, they make flawed but still very fun and beloved games, most of the time. The whole reason expectations for Fallout 76 were so high in the first place was because up to that point Bethesda had produced several award-winning best-sellers _in a row._ Which, honestly, sorta makes the failure of this one look like a matter of hubris rather than a lack of competence. These people _usually_ know what they're doing, is what I'm saying.

A - Team was busy gearing up for Starfield. FO76 was just there to get investors and customers to fork over cash to pay for Starfield's development and also why FO76 had unpatched bugs from FO4. Now the cash shop which worked from day one, had not lag problems just worked; is paying for the game so there are now quality of life fixes like the scorch queen (giant mutant plague carrying irradiated bat) no longer dodges under ground like in Skyrim. Also they added NPC characters instead of just data logs in hacked terminals and holotapes all pretty much saying "Hey, if you're listening to this we're all dead or took off out of West Virginia because reasons. But if you follow the clues you might find a pipe pistol that will do 1 more point of damage than what randomly drops off the trash mobs. Well have fun."

7:30 - Thing is, the biggest most ambitious project is supposed to be Starfield. 76 is kind of a rework of Fallout 4, with new locations, and multiplayer. The scope of the game isn't the problem, and it's not really that ambitious (plenty of people do multiplayer) - the problem is that the Creation Engine is not designed for multiplayer, and they haven't done multiplayer before, and the whole idea of not having NPCs is generally a bad idea for the setting.
Basically, the problem isn't the people, the problem is that the software is garbage, and was always buggy. Adding more features made the buggy software worse.

So i recently went to try F76 again and the game is actually mostly functional now(mind you most ppl that play are whales with game breaking P2W advantages like the scrap box(infinite storage) and free camps in addition to other minor advantages but a game is there , you are just gonna have a hell of time without fallout 1st and despite them advertising it still as having "single player" there still isn't and private servers are still locked to 8 people so you can't even have a decent amount of friends in your server and those server suffer from lacking features like workshop persistence which you would expect them to have since they are not public so they don't need to delete your workshop when u leave. Also still no text chat and voice chat doesn't work 99% of the time. Those are some of the major cons as for good shit. PVP is nearly gone and even when someone tries that BS most of the server tends to grief the guy until he leaves. Healthy community for general gameplay and for world events and helping boost ppl (not like early when ppl would just nuke you if you tried to get a boost from world events and such. I see a good builder community who just hop in to show off their camp builds and some are really intricate and cool. Game now has a decent chunk to do and isn't as dragged down by "ritual activity " play like other similar MMOs. A lot of weight needs to be readjusted tho as some items have absurd weight simply for the same of clogging the storage limits to the point of making some weapons nearly non-viable as storing extra ammo is nearly impossible with the low storage limit of camps(only 1200 when an average weight of a rifle or other mainline weapon is 20-40 regardless of the kind of weapon in some cases). The dumb pointless survival game elements like food and certain drinks expiring needs to go away along with hunger/hydrate , keep those half assed elements out of fallout. Also like F4 its still missing some basic QOL features like hud color adjustment without mods and sadly the mods for it are not great so enjoy puke yellow if like me you are doing a PA build. I mean atleast i didn't buy it ,i played 8 hours to write a review and thats as much as i could handle.

I’m not 100% sure, but my guess as to why the game development was given to Bethesda Austin was likely because there wasn’t AS much to do to make the game as if it was something totally brand new. Fallout 76 was essentially the exact same as Fallout 4 just with some newer textures and a new map. They were essentially able to take the bones of Fallout 4 and work off of that to make 76. Of course they had to implement the whole mmo aspect and get it to work on servers with other players and what not too, but since a fairly large chunk of the game was already done, they likely gave it to their smaller divisions to work on because it was less work to do and Bethesda’s main team could start work on other big games they were trying to do. Now the weird part is since Fallout 76, Bethesda hasn’t released a game that’s their own since then aside from the year after they released The Elder Scrolls: Blade which was a mobile game so I don’t really count that. Not so sure that would’ve been taking up their main development studio’s time to be considered more important than a fallout title. Sure they’ve release a few games since then but they were developed by their subsidiary studios. Arkane, Tango, Nightdive, id software, MachineGames, and Avalanche. So not REALLY Bethesda. Not being worked on by Bethesda directly anyway. So i don’t know if they were already working on their upcoming game Starfield and so they put 76 to their other studios to work on or what.

Yeah, it's still pretty buggy. I first tried 76 when they were first implementing Wastelanders and have also been playing it recently. For the most part it's stable, but it does still have issues.

And FO 1&2 are also technically done by Obsidian, back when they were still part of Black Isle Studios under Interplay (before Bethesda got the Fallout IP during Interplay's attempt to avoid bankruptcy and selling off some IPs to try and keep afloat). (Black Isle broke up and split into Troika and Obsidian with a few devs going over to Bioware as well).
New Vegas itself is also loosely based on parts of the Fallout 3:Van Buren prototype, which would've been the Interplay version of Fallout 3 had they not sold off the IP.
New Vegas gave Obsidian a chance to use some of those ideas and story-beats, though due to the time-crunch and having to work with existing FO3 assets, some things didn't make it in or were changed a lot.

As a fallout youtuber... I find your confusion between fallout 76 and New Vegas to be disturbing and offensive. JK, there are tons of others who might flame the comment section, but if you're not a player, then it's completely understandable that you might mix up the titles. it is pretty coincidental that New Vegas was also notoriously buggy when it launched too since Todd outsourced it to a different company entirely, but people tend to look back at New Vegas with rose tinted glasses because it, by a huge margin, has the best story of all fallout games.

  • @skootmeister3994

The fallout rabbithole is deep. Even the simple explanation of Bethesda mishandling it to a laughable degree since they acquired it does no justice.
Yes, Fallout is not a Bethesda original. It was originally owned by Black Isle (many of whom would go to Obsidian, explaining why New Vegas is so beloved.)
“Bethesda never Understood” Fallout and “Fallout 3 is Garbage and here’s why” are excellent videos to start a journey down said rabbithole if interested.
As of right now… the game is still bad, now because of Bethesda trying to fix it. Patriciantv’s massive project of “Fallout 76 is worse than you know” goes into EXPLICIT detail about it.

I believe the raising and ‘slashing’ prices is not technically illegal in the US, my job does this in sales, but it is more sparse, and based on what the sales associate deems as fit, in order to encourage good customers to get more expensive things by making them sígnicantly less expensive and you get more out of it. It is more so, you have coupons on hand to give out in certain situations to help body sales (like clients from businesses coming in get certain fees waved due to the products they need being different, and shouldn’t be charged extra for getting less) so, maybe? Even then, raising prices to discount them technically is based on the seller, and so are the sales.

      @aralanstradivari2841 ปีที่แล้ว

And no, I will not elaborate on where I work, because regardless, they are of good quality for their prices (even before discounts) and I like being able to pay the bills in a way that actually has helped me grow as a person. (Plus my manager is an awesome person)

This is the kind of shit that makes me not only not feel bad for pirating Bethesda games, but I outright feel good about it. It’s up there with Nintendo games. I love the games they make but their business practices are so unbelievably scummy that if I pirate a game (that they realistically aren’t even profiting from anyway) I feel like I get to show my middle finger to whichever corpo scumlord decided his 3rd yacht is more important than delivering a finished product

Meanwhile fallout 76 just got even more post launch content and is now regarded as a really fun online experience. Complete with npc's, questlines, stat checks and even more content and items.
The devs really did pull a no man's sky and work their asses off on it until it became a good game. Honestly pretty endearing.

Ha! they're not even close in comparison. the devs fixed it yes, but the game doesn't deserve to be compared to NMS. It may be managements fault not the devs, but I still wouldn't compare them. not after the bag, coke bottle, and ridiculous pricing and ingame crap.

Why on earth would you give money to a company and pay for their products after they have PROVEN that they *will* unquestionably try to rob you blind even illegally if they have to, don't care at all about your experience and are happy to throw you under the buss for a quick buck at any time no matter if they have grounds for it or not? They freely lie about their products, won't refund you when they don't work, censor all criticism of their actions even when they're outright engaging in illegal activities to drain you of more money and they take no responsibility for the consequences of their actions.
