A RETIRED DANCER'S POV- LISA "LALISA" Dance Practice

  • *It seems like I have to clarify this “simple choreography” thing that I mentioned in this reaction and my reaction to LALISA Special Stage, since I’m getting so many people lecturing me for stating the “simple” word and even to the point where some will seriously tell me that I have a big ego for using that word:
“SIMPLE” does NOT always mean “easy”. Just like how MINIMAL ironically doesn’t necessarily always means “less”. I stated that it was a very smart decision to simplify this choreography in order for more of the general audience to be able to learn the dance and do it too so we can all feel like a part of this memorable moment in Lisa’s life. I also stated something that I always say in dance videos that have more simple moves: simple choreography does NOT mean that anyone can easily learn it and perform/execute it the way trained and skilled dancers like Lisa and her dancers do it.
So no, me stating different levels of dance doesn’t mean that I think I’m any better than anyone out there. I’m seriously just pointing out different styles and levels of dance and expressing how Lisa and her dancers’ execution and presence along with the creative formations and musicality really highlights the super swaggy and sassy choreography even more.
WTF DOES “OG KPOP STAN" EVEN MEAN?!⬇️
Supposedly "original gangster”, can be seen as “old generation", personally viewed as “old-school”.🤓 I’ve been into Korean music since 1998 when I was 15, and using “kpop stan” is more catchy (super cringe or not) than “person who’s listened to Korean music since 1998”, amirite or AMIRITE.😂

    XTRA 411-
I became an avid Korean music aka Kpop listener/lover since 1998. Korean and rap music were my coping mechanisms from the bullying I experienced in middle school through high school and my love for the genre has stuck by me ever since. The genre, along with artists like Michael Jackson, Aaliyah, Britney Spears, etc. then motivated me into becoming a hip-hop/pop dancer, which was a very active lifestyle for me literally throughout my whole 20s. (XTRA DANCE 411- I danced for, trained, and performed with 4 different dance teams. My first and main dance team who started my "dance life" was with Marvelous Motion (who later became IaMmE, America's Best Dance Crew Season 6 Champions). A lot of my dance training came from Di "Moon" Zhang, Brandon "747" Harrell, Emilio Dosal, SOREAL, and from attending many dance classes in Houston and L.A. (from amazing local talent to widely-known talents such as Parris Goebel, Keone Madrid, Kyle Hanagami, Lando Wilkins, Mister Wiggles, Rino Nakasone)
Unfortunately, I took a huge break from Korean music and dance around 2015 when I was officially diagnosed with lupus nephritis, seizures, and a heart murmur. I was receiving and battling years of chemotherapy and dialysis along with taking 32 pills a day, so I had no mental/emotional/spiritual room to keep myself updated with Kpop or dance. Luckily, I'm in remission now. That doesn't mean that lupus and seizures are gone because I am still very capable of frequent flare-ups if I don't take care of myself, but I make sure to do so enough to manage and live as "normally" as possible. I am also not capable of being an active dancer like I used to be due to my chronic illnesses, but I’m still a dancer in my mind, heart, and soul.
ALSO! Just to be SUPER clear- me calling myself an "OG kpop stan" does NOT mean that anyone who's listened to kpop after me is inferior or less-than. A kpop lifestyle is a kpop lifestyle regardless of time. Please don’t get that sh*t twisted.😛 Sooo I am currently and actively keeping a weather eye on the KPOP horizon and also using what I’ve learned from my dance years to give credit where it’s due!
    💜

HEY Y’ALL! So it seems like I have to clarify this “simple choreography” thing that I mentioned in this reaction and my reaction to LALISA Special Stage, since I’m getting so many people lecturing me for stating the “simple” word and even to the point where some will seriously tell me that I have a big ego for using that word (also proceeding to try and tell me how I feel and think and believing I’d let a total stranger decide my emotions and thoughts for me lol):
“SIMPLE” does NOT always mean “easy”. Just like how MINIMAL ironically doesn’t necessarily always means “less”. Just hope you know...I wasn't talking about your use of "simple choreography", I thought that you explained yourself VERY well, OTHERS however have been complaining about the "simple shoreography" and not understanding that simple doesn't mean easy. Love your reactions, I think you do a great job.

I completely get you. Level of difficulty doesn't always equate to visual pleasantries or satisfaction. Sometimes individual movements that look "simple" doesn't mean it's not difficuly to do when put all together. Sometimes it's the speed of the movements and transitioning to another move that makes it difficult.. Lisa herself expressed in an interview that it's one of the harder choreography that she has done.
Sometimes fans just want high level of difficulty to be able to compare with other dancers and brag. They don't appreciate it to it's overall performance and impact.

sometimes people look so much into songs, like they expect to have the deepest meaning with all the metaphors here and there. no. y'all forgetting the main purpose of music: did it make you feel good? YES. is it a bop? YES. did it make you wanna dance? YES. then the music is successful. end of argument.

If you think about it, “simple choreo” can actually require more skill. You need the attitude, swag, musicality and power to sell it. You don’t just have tons of flashy footwork to sell it for you. So the fact that Lisa and her crew make this stage so hype and engaging really impresses me, personally.

    • @lalalalisa41
      @lalalalisa41 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

Exactly this! I honestly don't understand people saying it's mediocre or she could've done better. Not every choreo has to be real hard-hitting and complicated 🤷‍♀️

agree! you ahn't need to go " acrobatic or make steps hard to make it swag and perfct! even simple kind of steps can look so awesome! it's the dancer's way of portraying/delivering" it to make the audience or viewers get mesmerizedby it!

@@danielaacevedo1150 You say that but then people will then say "Well, [so-and-so group] are able to sing live/rap *AND* have a hard choreo". I see that every single time and it gets annoying 🙄
Like you and others have said, it's not always about those complicated and creative choreo. It's nice though but I don't understand this need for high level choreo all the time now. I see groups get shit on at times for having simple choreo but then as soon as they have something harder and complex, people shit on them for sounding like shit when they're singing/rapping LOL. Like I get why so many people want to see Lisa go all out, but we should all know by now that she's a fantastic dancer. Her musicality, charisma, stage presence and the way she works with the camera are all 11/10. And yet, it feels like people want her to prove herself or something. Why can't she just have fun and do what she wants? She and the backup dancers did a fantastic job selling the smoothness and swag with this choreo 🤷‍♀️

The "simple choreo" was totally balanced with the quality of execution and the swagg. Its pretty satisfying to watch how synchronized they were and how every little detail was executed with perfection. As always, YG dancers gives us a lot of clean angles and movements! I don't have a single bad thing to say about this.

It's so simple a lot of the time, which actually makes me even more impressed. I'm not a dancer but I'm actually currently getting a music degree, and the fact is that the simple stuff is the easiest to do and by far the hardest to do well. When it's simple, there's nothing to hide behind. Every mistake becaumes audibly (or visibly, in this case) sloppy and messy and bad, even to people who don't know what they're looking at. In addition, you really can't do anything automatically the way you eventually learn to for more complicated things. You always have to be present no matter how much you've practiced. Of course, you still need to be focused and present during any performance, but not always in the same way or to the same intensity.

I love your reaction and analysis. Your breakdown and dancer insights are pure gold. I think most of the comments I have read regarding this choreography forget the power of the execution and the dancers musicality. That for me is key in a successful performance. The precision, clarity and rhythm in which a dancer executes a move, the visual, the flow represents the mastery of the craft. Every movement connects through and lead to the next move. Lalisa is that person for me; effortlessly flawless in her performance. She makes difficult moves look ease and simple moves look masterful. Thank you for your comments 🙏🏼👌🏼.

The fact that her ankles and arms are hurt but it doesnt affects the performance, what a queen!! Not shocked that she was the only one who got straight A's in the trainee evaluation. We can all see that she rocks it. The reason why Lisa now has bigger fandom, is that Lisa is not the typical kpop idol and attracts international fans with her kinda western vibe/swag that mostly kpop idol don't have. And it's okay to love her, to have bias on her but please don't spread hate to her or to other members or idols. She is my bias, not bc of her being swag and talented, but because of her huge and genuine heart. Through her duality from being on stage and off stage is unbelievable that you would love to get to know her more. Don't get me more for saying this, I just wan't you to know how big her heart was and keep in mind that I love love love all the members and will support them all the way. Lisa came from wealthy family. Her mother came from a wealthy family too eventho' her step dad is is a famous chef in Switzerland and Thailand. But Lisa and her family remain humble and being polite to the people around them. When youtube reactors reacts to "HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR BAND MATES?" and a question "WHO SPEND MOST ON SHOPPING SPREE?" was asked, youtube reactors always says that it is jennie but the members itselfs chooses lisa. And the reason why the reactors chose jennie because jennie usually looks very rich in every picture she posted on instagram, like rosé and jisoo, and lisa is very lowkey type of person like normal person hehe. But lisa spends her money to handbags, film cameras and rolex watches (not saying this bc she's my bias but bc it is the truth). All Blackpink members came from wealthy family but that doesn't mean that growing up rich means you're rich yourself, our girls manage to take their own paths and earn money by theirselves. Chaeyoung's mom is a business woman, Jisoo's father was a CEO, Nini's father owns a hospital and Lili's family own also a hospital and her step-father is a WACS (World Association of Chefs) Global Masterchef and a renowned chef in Thailand and in Switzerland.
Unfortunately, BLACKPINK don't get enough credits for their participation in songwriting their songs. This is a fact. For example, Jennie admitted that she wrote STAY in one of the behind the scene video. It is a clip of Blackpink reality show on TH-cam. In that clip, Jennie reveal the reason why she felt very emotional whenever they perform the STAY live is taht she is the songwriter. I also found out that when they release AS IF ITS YOUR LAST, they an interview. During that interview, Lisa admitted taht she wrote the rap verse for As If Its Your Last. She even said that its longer than she thought it is. On their SO HOT performance also who's remix by THEBLACKLABEL, it is revealed that Lisa wrote the rap parts. During the SURETHING cover, the rap parts verses was obviously changed and there Jennie and Lisa admitted taht they wrote the new verse. Jisoo also written the lyrics for her covers such as, Calrity and Habits. During an interview, Tushar Apte one of the producer who work on one of Blackpink's song, LOVE TO HATE ME, revealed that Danny Chung and Lisa write the rap verse for Love To Hate Me together. This is what Tushar Apte said during his interview,
Question: Was the first draft you submitted instantly approved or did the members share their feedback with you to work on?
Tushar Apte's answer: We pretty much got it right the first time on this! Which isn't common at all, but ofcourse Lisa and Danny Chung had to go and write the amazing rap verse that really takes the record to the whole new level!
However, if you look at their credits for their song such as Love To Hate Me, you won't find their name on the credits list for some song. However, it seems like YG learn their lesson recently. BLACKPINK was accredited for their work on their recent song such as LOVESICK GIRLS. Rosé was accredited for writing lyrics and composing song for her solo, OO THE GROUND and GONE.
    (On Billboard Interview, Article)
Jennie says: "During trainee days there was monthly evaluation and the results would be stuck on the wall and you get A, B or C. Lisa always got an A for EVERYTHING" and laughs.
    (On Blackpink Ddu-du-Ddu-du Countdown Vlive)
Jisoo : "Lisa is so talented"
Jennie: ""Yes she's the most skilled in our team"
(On TH-cam Video "Lalisa Shocked Me")
Jennie: "When Lisa first join the team, she shocked me and the trainees, I admire her and we became friends after that"
    (On Blackpink Documentary, Netflix)
Blackpink Producer Teddy Park: "She always has this calm, cool 'everything will be ok' smile but when it comes to certain moments you know, when the music starts, when its crunch time, She has this executioner killer instinct"
    (On an Interview)
Danny Im (from 1tym): " She Stood out for sure, She has this quality, She's very confident too. I remember she jumped off the stage, and came right in my face. I was like ' Yo! She has the courage to do that ' "
(Sinxity, a former YG Creative Director)
Sinxity: "It is clear that Blackpink's Lisa is the best artist of this generation that entertaintment industry can produce. She has talent | skill | attraction | effort and personality. All her stats are nearly perfect. During her time as a trainee, the monthly evaluations were not contests but performance itselfs. No one even asses her evaluation. People just appreciated her. No one hated her performance rather enjoyed it. Even though she's a natural-born performer, you can still see her efforts. The growth of a young girl far way from her family and alone in Seoul, it's amazing and beautiful"

Simple doesn't mean easy... It's NOT easy to make simple choreo look clean, and effortless. It is easy to f*** it up.
This choreo shows off Lisa's swag/presence, it also engages people. Connects with poeple, makes them what to dance along with it... And that is the point.

Agreed! This is why I kept repeating this issue in this video and mentioned the choreography in my reaction to LALISA Special Stage; I hope to get the word out about “simple” choreography not meaning that everyone can just easily learn it and perform/execute it as well as Lisa. It still takes solid dance skills to perform/execute it like how she and the dancers do👏🏼

People hate the word easy, but the fact is Lisa makes those moves look easy even though they’re not. Nothing is worse than watching a dancer labor and trying too hard to hit those moves.

I think the reason the choreo works so well, being as "simple" as it appears to be, is cause Lisa is an actual real dancer. A lot of the Kpop world CAN dance, they can memorize a choreo, memorize a flair, memorize how the lyrics will fit with a movement. But most times than not, those same people wouldn't be able to go "off script" from the choreo cause they lack the repertoire, cause they weren't doing jazz, street, hip hop, contemporary, etc since a young age, they only started dancing to become an idol, and the "dancing to become an idol" class is rather limited and basically created for potential idols to just be able to memorize shit, and not improve upon. They don't care if the person wants to learn more than just their choreos and the specific way they are to be danced. Lisa is a wild card in that sense cause she's a dancer, so you can show her the skeletons of a choreo and she'll add in the flair and then some. To be able to have that swag, that precision in the movements AND engage the camera in the way she does, that might seem simple from a non-entertainer perspective, but that shit is hard! Dancing, singing, perfectly executed movements and her absolute charisma and ease with the camera is something only people who've been used to dancing for a looong time can do without messing one of the things up. I'm not bashing any idol, don't get me wrong. But sometimes it's just GLARING when an idol isn't a professional dancer. Cause the choreographer puts them in the middle of 20 professional dancer who are nailing the choreo, and the idol is left doing less than, so the dance can become jagged from inside out. With Lisa, she not only matches the other dancers, but she can even outdance them. That's why the simple choreo + the beautiful outside dancers work so well. Yes, Lisa is the main focal point, but that focus wouldn't look so damn good if she didn't nail the dance AND if the choreo wasn't so symbiotic between her and the dancers. Love it!!

BP producers/1TYM members Teddy and Danny wanted to bring back the true color of YG through Lisa because as what Jisoo said, "Only Lisa can do it." I don't understand why people expect Lisa to do some K-pop break up songs like J and R when Lisa's range is obviously beyond K-pop.

It looks easy for the most part but it's the beat switch and execution that makes a bit harder. Personally as trained dancer myself, it took a few days to get it right. Many were expecting this choreo to be like one of her lilifilms that's why they were so disappointed. But if everyone noticed no one really did many TikTok covers or dance covers for those in general because of how tough it was. Through this simple yet swagger choreo she got everyone on their feet dancing! That was the point. And I appreciate it. My mother who has an illness easily danced and bop around with a smile on her face and that make me happy that Lisa was able to make someone enjoy easy choreo.
