Jesus, people, Avatar is allowed to change up their sound! If they put out the same music for every record, you would still be complaining about how they're boring and stagnant. They did something incredible with this album and should be immensely rewarded (come on, they wrote a damn book for it).
Finally found a comment that gets it. Since Black Waltz it is pretty much impossible to set boundaries on what they can (and will) do. This crazy variety is what I love about them.
OK so can they drop the gothic metal and melodic death metal tag. Because someone like me does not want to be played for as a fool.

i love the fact i don’t know what i get first trying out this band. so far love them.
Range from sinister, dark and hard as nails, to melodic, haunting sometimes plain uplifting ...truly unique and i can’t stop listening.
I love their old records, more specifically Black Waltz, but how can everyone dislike this record so much? I believe it's their best work to date. It is so diverse and real. 10/10
That's because it IS their best work. Everyone who hates it are likely retarded metalheads that hate every band's newest work. This album was a story complete with a book and all. It's actual art in many senses rather than just edgy music for people who think the music they listen to is better than everyone else's.
Even if that music is from the same band.
For those who don't understand the true meaning of the video and the song in the album, the story goes kinda like this: an owl, the queen of the night, is being threatened by the Eagle, and to face the eagle, the owl recruits an army of the creatures of the night, but the eagle slaughters them and they decide to go against the owl who promised to fight the dawn (this is all before the song)
In this song, the owl is scared and runing away fron the creatures of the night and the eagle (that's why the eagle mask boy seems like a weird zombie, it represents all of what the owl is scared of), until eventually she finds a wolf (technically speaking, she meets the wolf in the previous song), but this is mostly the wolf trying to convince the owl to fight again for a night never ending (and why the wolf mask girl is nice with the girl), when he finally convinces her to not give up, whe see the girl puting the owl mask.

Okay so you have a way diffirent POV than mine, I do believe you're right. I won't question that. But in Swedish (folk?)lore that red horse that the Wolf mask girl gave her is known as a Dalahäst, and back then it was like a sign of evil or something like that. So when I saw the girl take that wooden horse I thought she'd get cursed. I'm not from Dalarna, I'm a Stockholmer. But you are most certainly right. And I am wrong.
@@alarminglyenthustiasticmet1460 Its not really a POV the story of the song was explained by the band, its part of a concept album. The music video is some unrelated thing like "the eagle has landed". BUT that's a really interesting bit of folklore behind the music video, very neat.

I love how each song on the album sound different and gives you a different vibe. Like for example, this song gives me kind of a Volbeat feel to it. Other songs on this album give me a System of a Down vibe. It's epic and amazing. These guys are WAY underrated and deserve more recognition in the metal community
This is one of the most sublime pieces of music ever created, utterly beautiful. This whole album is a fucking masterpiece from front to back, these guys are brilliant.
The end of the album tells us the Owl's mission has been futile, you cannot escape the day, the sun will always rise and acting without wisdom leads only to death. It is fairly clear that Wolf and Bear have been through this very same struggle before, and know the outcome. Bear accepts this, but the Wolf uses Owl to fight on, refusing to see reality.
I'm pretty sure that this video tells us two things: escape is impossible, and this has happened many times before. I think the other children/animals are meant to represent other nightly creatures that have tried to prevent the sunrise, and failed, coming to accept their death in day and live on in an eternal night. Here we see a girl run from death but she is caught, and slips into death, being forced to accept the reality. She puts on the owl mask, representing Owl realising, as the sun rises, that his time has come. He has died as the sun rises.

I love how they mix the different styles together. 30 yrs ago when I was in a thrash band we only played hard and loud. I started out playing classical. They're guitar solos alone are incredible. I also love how the singing changes. They are truly an exceptionally talented band.

Okay, going to get this out of the way first: "Oh, look, a Nightmare Moon song." With that done, I have to say that the first few seconds of the song tricked me. I almost thought it was going to be "Everybody Want To Rule The World" even though I knew otherwise. Also, I love the contrast of how happy and victorious the song sounds compared to the sadness at this point in the Owl's story. This dichotomy works wonderfully and elevates the song, and the album as a whole. An incredible song on an already amazing album.
