  • On the 26th of November, 1898, Elizabeth Roberts was murdered in an upstairs room, number 19, Miller's Court, Dorset Street.
Ten years previously, the ground floor room, 13 Miller's Court hand become infamous as the location where Jack the Ripper had carried out his last and most gruesome crime, the murder of Mary Kelly, on the 9th of November, 1888.
The fact that this crime occurred in the same court as one of the ripper crimes didn't go unnoticed by the newspapers, and lurid headlines about this latest killing began appearing in newspapers across the country.
However, it transpired that this was, in fact, a domestic crime, and the perpetrator was Elizabeth's 44-year-old sister. Kate Marshall, a woman who had a history of stabbing and assaulting people.
In this vide you can follow the events of the Elizabeth Roberts murder as they infolded.
Having described the domestic set up inside 19, Miller's Court, the video will tell of how the murder came to occur, and then give details of the aftermath.
We will follow Kate Marshall's court appearances, culminating in her appearance at the Old Bailey in January, 1899, where she was sentenced to death. You will even learn of a bizarre postscript to the trial.
This crime is an often overshadowed by the Jack the Ripper murders, but it provides us with an insight into the everyday and violent lifestyles that a large percentage of the residents in Spitalfields at the time were exposed to.

What a fascinating tale from such a place!! I really love that you’ve widened the scope of this channel and provide us with insightful extra, bonus content beyond JTR and his crimes. It paints a graphic and gritty picture of true life at that time. Thanks very much and looking forward to the next one! 😊👍

Richard never puts out a video that doesn't spur my interest to dive deeper into London's East end . There is so much that I've never considered. Such as this video. I look at the conditions in the East end during Jack The Ripper and I forget that the poverty and hopelessness did not start in Sep 1888 and it didn't end in 1888. So many stories were overshadowed by the Murders. Richard I can't thank you enough for your gift of knowledge.

It's hard to imagine today but back then these kind of stories happened on daily basis! Almost kind of a routine: work a lot, drink heavy and try to survive in domestic fights or on your way home. What a time to be alive!

Another great video, there must be so many fascinating stories around the area still to explore.
Incidentally, I'd love a video about penny dreadfuls and some of the most famous (or oddest) ones, common themes, why certain stories / themes were common, why they were popular (growing literacy?). Or honestly a video about Victorian urban myths / legends generally - I know about SHJ and the Hammersmith ghost, though I'm sure there must be tons more lesser-known ones out there!
Do you think the mythos surrounding Spring-Heeled Jack was still very firmly in the public's mind by the time of the Ripper murders? Wondering if accounts of JTR borrowed facets from that earlier (likely) urban myth, to the extent even the name 'Jack' would conjure malevolent, supernatural connections when hearing it was the nickname of the murderer?

You might want to add, that Kate Marshall died in prison on February 7, 1918, according to the entry on the calendar of prisons. If she was about 44 years old in 1898, as the press reports, then she must have been around 63-64 at the time of her death.

Indeed, a sad story. It isinteresting that Kate's solicitor objected to 'trial by newspaper', with the rags rehearsing all the previous convictions of the accused. This of course is prevented by the law now, and in some people's eyes, a bit contentious. I must admit that during the police investigation into Fred and Rose West's property I felt some misgivngs about the way in which the local Birmingham daily was covering it.

Not forgetting of course the terrible accusation of an honourable Teacher Christopher Jefferies in the Jo Yeats case in Bristol. A neighbour's son was taught by him and said he knew it wouldn't have been Chris, but the Press slaughtered his character, because he was 'Different'.

So in Tom Cullins book Autumn of Terror he said he spoke to a borrow boy who remembered the east end in 1888 and stated a women who was handy with a knife when drunk called Mrs Flowers on the flock. Is it the same woman??????. Or was it time playing tricks with the barrow boys memory

Tom Cullen’s 1965 book Autumn of Terror was the first and best book I ever read on the Whitechapel murders. I seem to recall it read like an interesting novel rather than just a study of facts, details and theories. I have read 8 more since.

Very sad. I would have believed Kate Marshall when she said she did not harm her sister because Kate swore so ‘before Almighty God’. God and religion were held in high esteem in those days regardless of whether you were rich or poor. She would not have risked damnation by swearing her innocence in such a way if she was not innocent of the crime. Poor Kate. The Judge was cold and thoughtless not to take any notice of the jury’s call for leniency. Very sad case.
