  • Walking London’s East End at Whitechapel in the rainy early hours at 2am, following in the footsteps of Jack the Ripper, roaming the streets and visiting some of the locations he made infamous, though obviously they would have looked very different back in 1888 during the Victorian era.

    Temperature - 16°C/61°F

Quite a lot of the East End looks nothing like it would have in 1888. Much of the east end of London was bombed out during the War. That, plus general changes over the decades. To be honest, I understand that large swathes of Whitechapel were radically changed even before the 1940s, as the JTR events caused the powers that be to start paying some attention to the awful conditions there. It's still a pretty run down area, but now populated with some gentrifying art-school types.

i had lots of nightmares as a reasult for sometime after that , it seems jack the ripper had followed me home becuase i called him out several times while i was there , spooky it was, i felt an over whelming depression whilst there, never forget it

I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner. It's one thing reading about it, and even taking an online tour with a guide doesn't do justice to walking the streets in silence during the time of day when Jack himself roamed. Always been a Ripper fanatic, but this is amazing! I live in America, and Ive been to London a long time ago, but this makes me want to go to the East End this time! I love the no dialogue, smooth walk of the camera. My 14 yr old daughter is watching now and loves it!

Like many others I felt the presence of Jack even after 130 years. I was spellbound. My tummy churned with dread. When your walk was over I slapped myself back to reality and splashed cold water on my face. A perfect lead up walk in what will be one of the scariest Halloween's ever!

I definitely concur with all the comments on here, it was an eerie place, then and now. We are all watching from far flung places but you are out there doing the walk, I like to imagine a bodyguard walking very quietly behind you so that you feel safe but I think I am dreaming !! Take care out there, but do keep bringing us these amazing vids, thank you WW !!

That was so good ! Because of the rain and the time in the early hours of the morning it was filmed by the silent cameraman, it rendered the mostly deserted streets a more eerie and sinister sense of doom and gloom. As to the cameraman, you’re a braver man than I Gunga Din ! Thank you.
