B52s lyrics are indecipherable, this is probs the easiest to understand 😂. And don't you dare think about dissing Fred. You need to start at the beginning Planet Claire, Rock lobster or Give me back my man.. can't imagine what you will make of those lyrics.
This song is about a club outside of Atlanta years ago. It looked like a run down cabin, but they said when you opened the door, it was the craziest bumpn party.
Fun times as a teen running with the collage crowed in Athens. Didn't get to see them often as they were REALLY big by 83/84 but they still liked doing impromptu gigs now and then. Just like REM playing on campus for free. Athens club seen was pretty tight in the early and mid 80's. Back then it was pretty easy getting into the clubs when you were friends with one of the local DJ's. It also wasn't real hard to get a freshman ID either. Then there were the Block parties as well or the watering hole down by High Shoals. Small town with BIG collage always makes for wild times!!
Close but it was outside of Athens ga where the band was from. It was called the Hawaiian Ha-Le club and was an African-American club . They used to hang out there often
@@nataliestclair6176 Well it is outside of town by maybe 20min. That part of Danielsville Rd is still a Athens address. I should know I was living off of Helican Springs Rd. which veers off of Danielville rd. right before the Hawaiian Ha-Le club. Back then it was "out in the sticks" but I attended Clark Central because I had a Athens mailing address. You have to go a few more miles before you cross into Madison County. With all the build up on that side of town some 40 years later it probably takes twice as long to get to the campus and down town Athens now with traffic and all but the club still looks like a shack it's just not in the middle of the woods any more.lol
And the drummer Charles Drayton went on to be a hugely successful session musician who’s worked with dozens of music legends, and then was the drummer in Divinyls and married to the lead singer. He’s ALSO the father of Tom Petty’s granddaughter.
And yes, RuPaul found his first big break into mainstream recognition through a cameo in the Love Shack music video. RuPaul can be seen doing the Frug in a flowered minidress and a monster Afro! B-52's frontman Fred Schneider looked back on RuPaul's appearance fondly, remembering how the drag queen "got the line-dance going, that’s for sure!". 🤩
I noticed RuPaul with a big afro wearing all white - a cropped halter top and white shorts dancing but not a flowered mini dress unless that's a scene that shows very briefly.
Man it’s a good thing I researched before sticking my foot in my mouth. For some reason I always related this song as a cover (but the song I was thinking of was sugar shack) LOL Your observation about Fred (the rapper, in training) is gay, and I think as is the case most the time When Fred came out to his mom one day she said “oh Freddie I know”! So he decided to go outside and get high as per Wikipedia anyway! So to all those thinking they are hiding things addiction/Alcoholic/sex The only one’s you’re fooling is yourself!
Can't have the B-52s without Fred. I saw these guys in Detroit (several times) in the 70s and 80s, and it's oddly comforting that when they release a new single years later they sound exactly the same. Some things don't need to change.
This is a great wedding song. Everybody that can gets after it when it comes on. I still listen to them at 65. Those were the days. Kinks, Bangles, The Tubes, Devo, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and so many more. Great time to be twenty something.✌
You don’t get more real than the B52s. Five close friends (including a brother and sister) formed a band more for fun than anything. They performed at parties to start out with. Their popularity grew and they moved to the college circuit. They developed a cult following on early 80 ‘s indie radio. I saw them at Red Rocks in 1984. Then member, Ricky Wilson, passed away from AIDS and it took a few years for then to regroup but then they really hit it big with this song and album. They’re still performing together 40+ years later, although one member has retired from touring. They’re icons and belong in the Rock Hall of Fame.
The B-52's were a distinct and unique band that helped usher in the New Wave era. Fred was the frontman with his very unique style. The cool thing is, his speaking style let the girls' singing really shine. A great song that is just the girls singing, is "B-52 Girls". A deeper girls-only cut is "Give Me Back My Man". "Rock Lobster" is a trip, and was a huge hit. "Private Idaho" is a banger. "Strobe Light" is fun too. "Planet Claire" is another trippy one from their 1979 self-titled debut album.
Old dude? Thats Fred Schneider, and he was like 38 when this was released. 🤔 PS - this is classic 80's. Don't try to figure it out. It's not a puzzle. Just enjoy. Also, DEFINITELY click on that Deee-Lite video! The groove IS in the heart!
You're over thinking it! AND, you younguns think people weren't always "getting their freak on" was the saying during that era. The music frightened our parents back then, and they couldn't understand it was "just a song" that we could dance to (as a group rather than with a specific partner-- male/female partner dancing kinda didn't exist for quite awhile back then) and laugh "with".
When this came out I was in my late 20's or early 30's, and we didn't think much about it - we just laughed and danced. Assumed it was a joke on the 50's. It didn't feel like anything we'd seen in the 60's. But it was easy to image our older brothers and sisters in this 50's fantasy scene. Lots of wildness in the 50's.
The B-52s formed in Athens, GA at the University of Georgia. REM also formed there a few years later. Very different styles, but they are both very loveable bands. The inspiration for Love Shack was a party house out off campus where people showed for parties and raves.
Next up needs to be Rock Lobster, Keep Your Hands to Yourself, Atomic Dog, songs by The Romantics, The Ohio Players, and Soft Cell. Dance parties of 1978-1982 were fabulous, with plenty of New Wave, reggae, funk, a bit of punk, and slow jazz or symphonic rock numbers for some romantic/rest moments. We heard most of this music, mixed with plenty of power pop and rock, on the radio. You could find at least 1-3 stations in every major radio market that would play these fabulous eclectic mixes. I clearly remember hearing my first Billy Idol, Stray Cats, Madness, and Cindy Lauper tunes on just such a station. You can find an incredibly wide variety of music that got played at parties in that era. We knew it all, we loved it all. I suggest Fire, Skin Tight, Love Roller Coaster from Ohio Players and What I Like About You, I'm a Man and others from the Romantics, Billy Idol, and Police to get you started get you started down the 1980 Dance Party rabbit hole.
Cindy Wilson's story about that line "Tiiin Roof! Rusted!" is really funny. A lot of people assume it was some euphemism for pregnancy. But actually she was singing sort of stream of consciousness during practices (and picturing what that sort of rural shack in Georgia would have looked like), when the part or all of the power went out. The band thought the delivery was so funny they kept the line in.
This song is from 1989 and the guy aka Fred Schneider wasn't old he was actually 37 at the time and redhead whose name is name is Kate Pierson is now 76 and amazingly looks about the same (looks very young for her age ) !!
Fred Schneider's vocal style in the B-52s can be described as a form of "sprechgesang," a German term that roughly translates to "half-singing, half-speaking."
I was an extra in the Pau;l Simon movie: One Trick Pony. The scene was filmed in the Cleveland Agora with the B-52s playing Rock Lobster They did it 12 times, it was a lot of fun. The legendary drummer Steve Gadd was also there.
Such a fun song! The lyrics aren't even important because the beat itself is fire. First time I heard it I thought the same thing about the lead singer but the more you listen to it the more you realize that his voice is key to the song...quirky and all over the place.
Rock Lobster is a must-see. B-52s live was a wild ride every time I saw them - many, many times. But the best night ever was back in the early 2000s when Yoko Ono joined for backup vocals on Rock Lobster at Irving Plaza. I pulled every string I could to get those tickets when I heard rumors of the possibility. I pulled in some favors from the old Fillmore days, and it was worth it.
Oh honey, just relax and go with it. This was 1990. Midst of the AIDS crisis, the crack epidemic, etc., but we partied HARDY. And yes, that was RuPaul. This song was HUGE. I was living in the East Village in NYC, and I had an upstairs neighbor who played this song nonstop. And yes, your gaydar was working fine. Those were crazy times, but I miss them.

So Mr Pegasus, check this out the B-52’s just played for jimmy carters 100th birthday 🎉and we’re one of his favorites!!! How about that little piece of trivia?? Love ya ❤️
The B52' and R.E.M. , Widespread Panic and Colt Ford are just a few groups from Athens Georgia. This is a college town with a huge live music jive. There are several good clubs to listen to bands and R.E.M. owns the 40 Watt Club that plays starting talent. Ryan Seacreast even got his start in Athens. I guess he has used his Journalism Degree to make the big money. Athens also has the back to back National College Football Champion Georgia Bulldawgs. I live about 15 minutes from the Stadium. Rupaul is in the video. It was his first video. They were drinking bathtub Jin. They made that during proabition.
A Love Shack is just a party house and when she yells Tin Roof Rusted that wasn't planned. Have you checked out Groove Is In The Heart by Delite? It reminds me of this groove.
When this song came out it reminded me of a club in Milwaukee named the Zodiac set in a field and a quonset hut in GITMO. Except in Cuba I heard Cream - Disraeli Gears for the 1st time. 😮
They have a few good songs that you'd enjoy. My fav from them is a deep cut called 'Dirty Back Road'. It is a cruisin' on an empty road at night with the windows down kinda song.
Too me he is the instigator of every song. He is the conscience within the song. He grows on you. Without him it wouldn’t be the B52s. Rock Lobster,Strobe light, Quiche Lorraine, Devil in my car…. I love Devil in my car.
Love, you need to come to Albuquerque and spend a weekend and I'll give you a PROPER music education. Everything from B52's to The Stones to Gershwin. You poor devil, you've missed out on so much fun!! 😊❤
Went to a classic car show this past Saturday.. My hubby loves classic cars.. we have a 1963 Impala.. it's a boat to me.. he loves those boats.. not me.. the car in this video.. a boat.. they don't make parking spots for these kind of cars any more lol.. It's like parking a pickup truck.. and we have 5 pickup trucks.. I would rather drive our dually than one of those old boat cars. Just me. I park in the middle of nowhere for space.
REALLY hope you check out their other songs... ROAM, and ROCK LOBSTER, are two I think would be fun to see your reaction too! ✌️❤ (The B52s were also the band in the live action FLINTSTONES movie!)
Hey BP. Effron White (my songwriting partner) is asking if you’ve ever done a reaction to Dr. Hook’s “Sylvia’s Mother”. I remember you did some Dr. Hook.
There is nothng particularly sexual about the song. It is about a place to go and dance and have a good time. The B52s were around for decades and the lead singer(Fred Schneider) was younger when they started and grew older by the time this song came out.... That's how it works.
The part where they say “Tin roof rusted” was slang for someone being pregnant which explains the lead singers (Fred Schneider) expression. You are correct he is gay. He said in an interview with Howard Stern his experience when he “came out of the closet” to his mom. Her response was “oh I know, Freddie”. His reaction was "It's like, well, OK. I guess I'll go back outside and smoke some pot."
The B-52's were part of the 'New Wave' of the 80's. The songs weren't supposed to make sense. They were just meant to be FUN! And they were.
B52s lyrics are indecipherable, this is probs the easiest to understand 😂. And don't you dare think about dissing Fred. You need to start at the beginning Planet Claire, Rock lobster or Give me back my man.. can't imagine what you will make of those lyrics.

@@jdturingkai564Unfortunately Charles was not in the video or the subsequent tour. That was Zack Alford, who has quite the resume himself.
God preserve us.
So ‘tin roof rusted’ apparently means an unplanned pregnancy.

Dschingis Khan did...
Even now they are a super fun live show. I just might have to head to Vegas in November.

Okay, now you need to do Planet Clair and Rock Lobster. Yeah, the B-52s are all about fun music!

There is nothng particularly sexual about the song. It is about a place to go and dance and have a good time. The B52s were around for decades and the lead singer(Fred Schneider) was younger when they started and grew older by the time this song came out.... That's how it works.
BP, hit that, Groove is in the Heart by Dee Lite. It's more of that 60's revival stuff like this one.
You HAVE to do Dee-Lite “Groove is in the Heart”! 🙏 Please
Very nostalgic song for me
70s punk rock band turned pop "ROCK LOBSTER"

When the blonde girl says

Is a slang term
For being pregnant

Dude, Fred Schneider was only in his 30s in this video from 1989. Hardly an old man. 🙃
