I've seen some questions on how and why this works so here it is :
Basically, the engine can only utilize 32 bit RAM and like one or two cores of CPU.
VRAM and GPU on the other end are uncapped.
Probably a way to prevent old systems to literally implode when running the game, but computers nowadays are much more powerful and can handle it no problem.
By running the game at a higher resolution, we force the engine to load all the textures in the RAM and to allocate more VRAM (as far as I understand at least, it's not exactly clear why that is but trust me, it works).
"3D model quality" uses CPU, so we don't want it too high, whereas "3D model texture" uses VRAM, so I'd recommend the highest setting.
Shaders also use CPU, but I've never noticed too much of an impact, although you can always disable it in game and use Reshade to handle shaders with GPU. Be aware that you will probably experience visual glitches (in particular in the menus) when using Reshade with CM games tho.
The only downside to these fixes is that it can significantly increase loading times, even on an SSD.
Also, it won't prevent stuttering as this is linked to the way the engine draws whatever is in your FOV, only the devs upgrading the engine would help us there (as far as I know)..
This is planned for this year (2023) as explained here by the devs themselves :
"There was talk last year of an Engine 5 Upgrade designed to improve game performance free of charge. This is still planned, but it did get caught up in the PBEM/Tournament development headaches. Ripple effect, again."
Hopefully there isn't any more delays this year, and we'll get to play a smoother CM in the near future.

Hey, thanks for the tip about the display size. I've owned CMBN from the jump - as well as the rest of CM catalog - and never knew that trick. I tested it with CMBN and it does seem to be just a bit smoother. Will apply to the rest of the series as well. Learn something new each day. Good work and thanks for sharing!
You can have trees on a higher detail, especially if you are recording for youtube. When you save just have the trees turned off Alt-T. it will save the game a lot quicker. Trees-foilage even with a good machine is a hog.

In 30 years of gaming this is the best optimization guide in terms of impact on what these changes do. I have bought all the Combat Mission games on steam and this was a game changer.
I hate that the CM games cannot be windowed. Ridiculous.

That's weird, I've never seen that. Are you sure it's AA, ?
I know I used to have visual glitches with reshade tho, if you have it on..

@@JonnyTenebrous i brought black sea and red thunder when they came out on steam, had fun in black sea but not in red thunder and was thinking of getting an another one, either normandy or cold war.

can i personally ask you for this one mod that ive been wanting in combat mission and will even pay for it, i want a grand campaign map similar to something like total war but its more of theres cities on the map and land that have to be protected, no aircraft if i dont have an airfield in the region, all vehicles needs fuel and i need to hold a fuel depo in the regien to recieve fuel or i can build a makeshift fuel depo at my FOB but it wont hold much fuel to refuel all my vehicles, if rebels or russins take one of the towns, i need to send in the marines or any force of my choosing, if i get intel that there may be a big push into my turf, i can set up defences to prepare, you get where im going with this right? i have to have these mechanics in the game and is willing to pay money for them,
What you're asking for is not a mod. It's a new game
