      I bought at the beginning of EA as well and I can say it's really come a long way since then, but you're definitely right about testing by players. i would love to see a video on the hearths and other game mechanics that run deep in the background that impact the larger gameplay. Also something i got out of this video was that Vlandia is good candidate for a whole map taker because of the enhancements to the villages which may improve the larger economy and foster a more stable empire. I would presume in the longer context of the game that empire villages would have a smaller population over time if left unattacked vs any other culture.

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I do have plans for a couple guides covering towns, castles and villages and one of the bigger topics will be hearths (and prosperity which is basically the same thing). So I can tell you the most important part of hearths for villages - they are in 3 categories: 1 - 199 hearths is poor, 200 - 599 is average, 600+ is wealthy. Villages output based on their hearths level, so the goal is to get everything above 600 ASAP. Food provided to the town or castle is 6, 12 and 18 respectively, so it's a big deal to get to wealthy status. It also produces more goods. I don't have the exact numbers yet because I need to finish testing, but it seems to be a big increase each level, like 50% more. So poor vs wealth is more than 100% difference in product output! I think once you get to 600 or above, then hearth growth isn't a big deal. You will get more militia to defend, but other than that it's not as important so I think empire debuff isn't as bad as it seems (assuming you can keep the idiots from raiding you into the ground LOL). The more important number is prosperity since it's a continuous scale instead of stair-step like the villages. I'm really excited for the guide though, I love the economy stuff so I get excited talking about it (as you can tell by this wall of text lol)!

    The best benefit i find in a culture is to have same-culture subjects not bitching about your rule, Empire has the edge on that one due to sheer size but good cornercamps like Aserai work great too. Vlandia's my personal favourite due to the only malus being a minor issue.

    Early game Battania and Aserai perks can be great, especially with the movement speed bonuses to their respective terrains. However, endgame, it is tough to beat the perks of the Empire culture. Why? 3/8ths of the world is Empire culture, so once you're running a kingdom you're only going to get owner culture mismatch loyalty debuffs for 5/8th of all settlements instead of 7/8ths of all settlements if you picked any other culture. The aligned culture also helps recruit 3/8ths of all the possible clans. There is also a maximum to village hearths I believe, so the slower hearth growth rate doesn't have a long-term detrimental effect if you keep raiders from burning your villages all the time, as you'll hit the max hearths anyway even with the slower growth rate, and you can slot in governors with +village heart growth perks to boost new settlements until they get up to the max anyway. Lastly, while the extra militia the Battania perk offers does have defensive benefits the same as a garrison would, militia doesn't help with protecting against a settlement revolt (in fact it can work against you, as your militia is what overthrows your garrison to successfully revolt), nor does it help with settlement security, not to mention a garrison troop can be tier 6 quality while a militia troop is tier 2 quality. I'd rather have a 250 strong tier 4 garrison + 150 militia defending a settlement versus a 200 strong tier 4 garrison + 225 militia defending the same settlement for the same wages, and the extra garrison will help keep settlement security high which means prosperity gains are stronger too, snowballing your ability to afford an even stronger garrison to defend the settlement. Movement speed bonus in woods or desert is great, but once you've got an end-game cohort of 5 clan members leading 250+ man parties to march around in a 1250-man+ army, you're going to be slow no matter what.

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good point, I completed my most recent WC using empire for that exact reason :)
      I find creating a kingdom is the best way to avoid rebellions because passing lots of loyalty policies is quite easy to do before you load up on other clans.

    Battanian start also seems to be great for agressive combat and fian spamming. Having the speed reduction tempered in forest, you can literally catch anyone you chase maybe except for kuzait war boys and battanians themselves but with speed bonuses battanians can be catchable.
    As of fian spamming, you could join vlanida or empire as a vessal and when war with battania, you can visit the villages, do the "harass for recruits" instead of raid and you get free units including the arrow boys. With cooldown of few days, you can put your troops on a castle or town and do the same thing all over again. If you get battanian fief, that's even better since you get no loyalty debuff.

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I really like the tip on forced recruiting - I think that's hands down the best way to farm specific unit types since you get access to 3 or 4 recruiting slots, which would take a long time to farm the relations with notables to match it. It's a really good mechanic, although I'm confused as to why it doesn't cause a relations hit? If my people were force recruited into the enemy army (like so many though history) I would be a little upset :P

    • @songsong1873

    Great video! I generally default to either Empire or Battania but am more inclined towards Empire in my recent games due to the Forest Kin perk issue for Battania (not sure if it's fixed for 1.7.0) along with the number of Empire cities on the campaign map to deal with loyalty issues.
    There's also a few other impacts of starting culture throughout the game.
    - Early game the Leadership 25 perk Combat Tips is useful to boost recruitment level from same culture NPCs to recruit more troops of your own culture and negate opinion penalties from opposing traits. Good for quickly massing up Fians and Khan Guards for Battania and Khuzait respectively.
    - As ruler, the kingdom policy Citizenship is extremely powerful especially for Empire culture since it gives +0.5 loyalty to settlement of the same culture as the owner clan but -0.5 loyalty of different culture. I use it when I'm uniting the entire Calradic Empire before I focus on conquering the other factions. Not so good though if you grants settlements to vassals of another culture.
    - Charm 150 perks in 1.7.0 depend on whether the lords are of the same or different culture as yours.

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! We are in the same boat - I used to exclusively play Battania, but I tire of dealing with rebellions in my kingdom member's fiefs so empire is the smart play now, then just promote companions of the same culture once outside the empire lands. It seems to work pretty well if you have the influence to burn!
      These other suggestions are great by the way! Particularly citizenship, I really like that policy.

      @@feyenoord1821 Sure, the big one that comes to mind is the charm perk that gives a boost to relations with "same sex" or opposite. I've tested it about 20 different times: nobles, notables, companions, prison breaks, voting, donating troops, donating nobles, barter giving donations, etc. etc. and not once did it give any extra relations increase. The code states that the perk work, but clearly in the testing it's not functioning properly.

I notice in your playthroughs you seem to be really good at actively commanding troops and I was wondering if you could make a guide on how to manage your troops like that on the field, and tips on what tactics/formations to use in general. I believe the only bonus that changes price for weapons and armor(only sell)is the 25 Trade Bottom,Whole Appraiser.
    Where you get 25% more denars from selling gear.

    You do a video on what it takes to become a mercenary the benefits, how the mechanics work also when you decide to join the faction what gear you get for it. Having a hard time finding a video with the faction loot for joining the kingdom. Also don't fully understand the mercenary mechanic. Really been enjoying your content a lot of times I'll replay a couple of the videos over and over while I play my playthrough

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I do have plans for a video like that! It will probably be another month though as this month my schedule is pretty much maxed out - finished the world conquest series, companion guide and starting the battlefield tactics series.
      I can give a few points that might help in the mean time - You can become a mercenary at clan tier 1, which means you have 50 renown total. You can check the renown on your clan tab in the top right of the screen. There are a few benefits to becoming a mercenary:
      - And influence you have will be converted into Denars. When you first sign up as a mercenary, they will give you the "contract amount" and is usually around 100 - 200 denars per 1 influence. So if you destroy a group of looters for 2 influence, it will give you and extra payment of 200 - 400 depending on your contract amount. You won't get the full payment right away, it will subtract a few influence per day until you reach 0.
      - You can fight with a kingdom in larger battles against strong enemies, helping you get valuable XP, good loot drops, etc.
      - You can hop from kingdom to kingdom as a mercenary, so you can join and leave at will following the wars around the map.
      - You can get into defensive sieges and earn massive XP for bow, athletics and throwing using siege engines and rocks.
      - If you capture nobles in battle, you can donate them to a friendly town/castle to gain relations and XP, then leave the mercenary contract and break them out of prison the same day to gain more relations, charm and roguery XP. It's pretty funny actually :)
      I'm not sure exactly what equipment is given for each faction as I usually start my own kingdom. I know Battania gives a 2H sword that is decent and Khuzait give a mid tier bow.
      I hope this helps until I can get a full video up on the topic! Feel free to reach out with more questions.

  • @orangesilver8
    @orangesilver8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I wouldn't be so quick to say that the Vlandian modifier is bugged. Army size is definitely not the only factor in determining an army's influence cost. I know this from looking at my faction and seeing armies of like, 120 cost less influence than armies of like 70. And I think wow, great deal, but the army arrives and it's a bunch of recruits. I assume unit tier affects it as well. So we can't really know without more advanced testing. I'm not sure what that testing would need to be, I can only think of difficult methods.

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I actually spend 2 - 3 hours working on that exact problem today actually. I felt really good about it when I published the video, but then today I start to think about a few things that weren't quite 100%. So relations to the noble is a factor in influence cost. Distance they have to travel to you as well. Number of troops, troop quality and some random factor (someone looked at the code for me) are in there. I looked back at all of my testing and I held nearly everything constant EXCEPT troop quality. I thought they spawned in with a template (40% tier 3, 30% tier 2, 30% tier 1, 10% archers, etc. etc.) But I tested it again and it was not the case! I was still not able to show a 20% increase in influence cost for Vlandia, but I also don't feel 100% about the conclusion I came to in the video. I did the best I could with the data I collected (I did 4 or 5 tests and they mostly matched), but it seems TaleWorlds mathematics might have gotten the better of me once more haha :D Great discussion you're brining up by the way, I appreciate the insight!

    Fleson19 put out a pretty interesting video today about the culture of the caravan leader impacting daily income - interestingly in the tests he ran the result was that Aserai led caravans earned ~50 denars more per day! Seeming to indicate that the trade buff does apply, but as another viewer suggested below it might only apply to trade goods.
    This leads me to my second thought, given that culture is inherited based on the mother it would be a bit fun to see you pick up a carefully curated selection of children. Here's what I imagine - your main heir is the culture you prefer to play as (e.g. Battanian). You then create three or so focuses for children and tailor them from birth towards those lifepaths - generals, governors and traders. Generals you may want to make them Sturgians (25% reduction in inf cost means you get larger and better armies faster as an AI, especially true given most armies are largely infantry). Trader children - have your caravans run by Aserai kids for the buff to trade income (although arguably Battanian is better as it better allows them to evade threats through movespeed). Governors is a tricky one - Battanian might be good because of the militia buff and empire is interesting because of the garrison reduction cost but both have their downsides, might be interesting to look into further.
    Either way I'd love to see you sending out armies led by your kids in the speedrun as if you're Temujin himself letting your vicious generals loose on the world haha. Although I suspect that you'll have almost all the world conquered by the point they start to grow up...

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I saw that this morning, pretty interesting stuff! When I was running my tests for this video, it's possible that that the trade penalty reduction was working, but that the items and quantity being tested were too small to notice the difference. I'll have to look into it further, but I do recall from doing my trade video that trade goods penalty was pretty small (like 10% for going from level 1 to 300 which is 60% trade penalty reduction).
      Haha sounds like a Eugenics experiment :D It sounds like a ton of work, but if it does work out, you would have some "uber-kinder" lol I really like the idea of the governor kid that can really stabilize a town quickly.

I was able to match the inventory levels by using console command and restocking the town, and it seemed like the prices were exactly the same at that point. I'm pretty confident the bonus isn't working for anything :( You bring up an excellent point though, I probably should have shown examples of the other trade items but I edited them out because of the time constraint. Thank you for watching!

    the problem most people i have seen playing this game when it comes to Garrisons is they will fill it with their highest tier troops and thus lose so much money to keeping them in said Garrison that they will end up broke the best option to counter this is only place 25 elite units of foot and the same number of archers and rely on the militia units to fill the rest as they cost nothing to keep in the towns and castles but with the right build of your char and those of your faction that are in charge of said places you can end up making money from only using militia and a few elite troops for example in one of my playthroughs in sandbox i spent about 25 in game yrs building up members of my own clan and only my own clan and a select number of other followers to be good at the things needed to manage towns and the like as well as ensuring they were good traders and had at least half the perks in the other trees that could make money or help to keep places and people on good terms and doing this i took all of the Empire, Aserai, Khuzait lands and was only losing $8000 per week but making around $70k in the same time so by the time i was taking on the other factions i was the richest faction in the game and had no issues holding towns and castles for shorter spans of time with massive armies of elite troops but once i had control of the main areas around those towns i would remove those Garrison units and replace them with the militia units and my small group of elite and the enemy would never be able to take back any of their former towns or castles as due to having a corp of elite people i could move to where they were needed to boost the city or castle and then at least 3 armies always within the area they could protect those places i could force the enemy to where i could have all their nobles within one city and take them all in one battle it also pays to fight in a smart way like always ensuring your archers are on a raised area of land to ensure line of sight and give them better range on enemies and use your foot men in a smart way as in never just charge an enemy as this leads them to split into smaller groups and get pinned down by enemy troops as for cav (non ranged) have them act as one of your flanks and only commit them once the enemy have started to flee this ensures they wont take losses to the enemy foot men

    • @TheGmaxMan
      @TheGmaxMan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And in the sturgian relations hit, I think the first voting wasn't affected because you proposed it, so it counts as a proposal, rather than a vote (my guess)

    • @Strat-Guides
      @Strat-Guides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So I just double checked the save files, both were at 0 relations with those nobles. I also retested and teleported to the same spot before calling them in, same results. I checked their troops, mostly the same mix of units in both saves. I can't really think of anything else that would cause a 20% difference when everything else that changes the influence cost are equal?
      For the Sturgian vote, I think you're right. It might only be relations hit from that actual vote screen and not proposing things. Although I'm not sure how I would test it otherwise as proposing policies doesn't cause relations hit, only voting against. Great point you brought up, thank you!

    the extra production from castle villages is deceptive. castles will grow until they eat as much as they produce, and that is based on the income you get from the villages and castle taxes. over time this means that a castle in the long run is more of a burden than a help. they will siege it with a force scaled for the size of the garrison, so the garrison doesn't mean much in the long run (bigger garrison means a bigger hit to the AI when they lose, but will take more troops for you to defeat the AI). the money you spend feeding the castle will easily outstrip any denars it generates before long, and the cost of defending it usually is even higher still. now that being said the villages go to the nearest town and sell their produce, which will boost the prosperity of the town and feed it. this makes the town more profitable, and so if you can get the town that the castles go to then it is a good deal, otherwise it is easily overlooked.

    Related to the Vlandian mercenary bonus and the new charm perk self promoter; I tried a vlandian play through with no smithing, to test if you can sustain a full steward size army with no smithing living as a mercernary, and apart of the obvious restritions of not being a vassal, economically it feels like playing catch up all the time. I can't even upgrade the whole army without really having problems, even doing trade regularly and 4 workshops working just fine (1 silversmith and 3 breweries atm). I like that you can build around perks that get you more influence to get a healthy income, but I really would like to se more options to smithing to sustain your end game economy, because smithing is too random and too grindy to be enjoyable every single campaign I play.

      I completely understand where you're coming from, they should add more viable solutions to the mid-game finances. Caravans are trash, workshops are only good in the early game and fiefs are great late game but can't have it as a merc. Once thing you might want to try - get to charm 275 for the final perk. @@Strat-Guides I'll try that, but as you do I really think we need more options to feed the upkeep late game. Atm is smithing basically, once your party size goes over 200 workshops can't keep up, fiefs are valid but that removes the merc "way of life" and, personally, I don't even bother with caravans. The issue with this problem is that needs some revamping and even maybe introducing new mechanics, because number tweaking is not going to solve it, and that's going to take a long time, and that's if the developers really think there is a problem here, and I think there is, because it really taxes the longevity of the game; I don't know how many times my sanity is going to allow me to repeat the smithing grind over and over.
