The best video that explains this entire process clearly for any beginner at it! Simple and brilliant even after 4 years! 👍thank you so much for taking the time to put this together
Greetings from Atlanta, Georgia thank you for the awesome video very detailed and informative. I am waxing my new chain for the first time and I’ve decided to install a new rear cog. Once again, thank you very much. I wish you the best of luck.
You just saved me - thank you. I took the plastic tool of my shimano and thought I would have to align it using the numbers somehow. I hoped that the hub would have a small notch as you have showed. Thank you.
Very handy having this here as I removed earlier what I thought was a complete 11 speed cassette, but turned out to be three largest rings conjoined and the other 8 rings loose and watching this made re assembly easy. Many thanks!
Great video! My new ultegra 10 speed cassette arrived in pieces and needed a video to help put back together and most importantly all the pieces were there!
Thanks so much for your videos. By far the most in depth how-to bike mechanic videos I have found. And thanks for taking your time explaining the ins and outs as you go along in the video.
Thanks so much! I bought a new cassette and had no idea as to how to remove that white plastic liner from the inside of the cassette. Furthermore, I had no idea that the plastic liner can provide utility for the future when you need to store a cassette.
Thanks for posting this video and the center lock rotor video. I think you have saved me hours. It's so much easier when you know what you're doing and can refer back to a video. The only recommendation I would make is that you add chapters to your videos so people can easily go back and watch certain sections again.
Just to add to this highly detailed and informative explanation. On Shimano cassettes if you look at the indexing small spline, the clockwise groove is wider than the counter clockwise groove on the other side of the index. This effectively polarises the cogs and with the writing on the outer side as told, should prevent fitting them incorrectly as well.
brilliant......changing over wheels first time.....cassette collapsed.....aaarrrggghhhh......got it back together but wasn't sure if correct......video has been great to double check.....didnt notice if writing was on outside of each sprocket. many thanks for concise description. 👍
Great instructional video. This is why I ALWAYS procure knowledge and guidance from this channel before starting a maintenance or repair job on my bike. There is always new things or "master tricks" to make your life easier. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Good informative video. One thing worth mentioning although the 11S markings on the gears face outwards they can only fit on the hub one way and cannot be reversed because of the hubs offset spline arrangement.
That is the tool I was looking for, is it the xtools cassete remover because it's the best bang for the buck for what is does when compared to the park tool version.
Do you know where you can get replacement lock ring shims? Mine has fallen apart and I've picked out the bits of metal but don't want to torque up without a replacement shim.
How about an L-shaped 8mm hex wrench with 1/2” Dr. adaptor, would this have good enough leverage? It’s what’s on my Super B 93500 tool set. Got no adjustable wrench right now. Got a box wrench somewhere, not sure if that’s ok to use. Edit: Found the box wrench and it’s 15” and fits the lockring tool perfectly. I’ll try it.
Hi, very informative, thanks. Can I ask your advice? I installed a brand new Shimano 11sp cassette on to a brand new Shimano RC700 wheel and noticed cassette wobble from the outset. I double checked the lock ring and it's not cross threaded. I'm struggling to get perfect shifting and chain sometimes skips under load and wonder if there might be an issue with wither the cassette or wheel manufacturing tolerances?
I just bougth a shimano XT 11-speed 11-40 cassette and it looks like the gap between the smallest cog and next cog is wider than between all the other cogs... is this normal? Shouldn't they all be the same distance apart?
When I fitted the new cassette it seemed like there was very little thread available to thread on the lock-ring. I'm sure It was installed correctly. Any ideas?
Hi, why the space between the smallest sprocket of a cassette and the one next to it (i.e., the space between the smallest and the second smallest sprockets) is bigger than the space between the rest of sprockets?
Free To Cycle I can’t thank you enough. I just watched the video and will give it a go. I thoroughly appreciate your content and will continue to watch for new maintenance advice.
Nice clip for those with that set! I have a 7 speed, with one spacer..for the life of me cant fit the spacer anywhere..there is always too little room for the thread of the lock ring to grip and be tightened...gary fisher mamba -yeah old one. would fancy if someone could quote a link to a clip. thanks all!
Easily the best video on Shimano 11 speed cassette installation I have seen.
This is the kind of video that makes TH-cam so valuable. Thank you for sharing, this helped me get my first build done!
The best video that explains this entire process clearly for any beginner at it! Simple and brilliant even after 4 years! 👍thank you so much for taking the time to put this together
Best video I’ve found to best explain the spacer positions. Others seem to bypass or skirt over the issue. Thanks as made changing cassette a breeze.
He’s an expert on how to fix things on a bike. We’ll call him “ the bike professor”. Thank you very much.
These videos are awesome.. exactly the right pace when following along. Thanks a lot , much appreciated!!

very good video. This is what i was looking for...How to line the cogs up. Just follow the small notch. Thank you!
Thank you for showing the order with the spacers and getting each cog right side out. Very much appreciated!
Great video! My new ultegra 10 speed cassette arrived in pieces and needed a video to help put back together and most importantly all the pieces were there!
Thank you! Just installed a cassette on a trainer and did not grease the lock ring as they did not call it out, removed and now greased, good tip!

Just had this issue and this video was brilliant in fixing it. The numpties that gave it a thumbs down clearly can't follow simple instructions
Omg, that is very thorough! I just installed my Ultegra 11 speed watching this A to Z ;)
Sorry, I forgot to say, thank you!! :)
Very helpful! My first time installing a 105 cassette and I wasn't sure about the spacers.
Can’t thank you enough, I really learned from you a lot in many videos not just this, you are really helping us, please keep up the great work!!
Great video thanks. Doing my first bike overhaul and this helped massively
Thank you for the spacer information about the freehub!
Thank you for a great video! Especially the part reassembling the cassette.

Thank you mate! This made my day a whole lot simpler! Excellent video for a first timer! 👌 Cheers!
Great. I liked the suggestion to use the white plastic to remove and install (not just for storage). Thank you.
Thank you so much for an extremely informative explanation this helped me more than any other TH-cam video much appreciated!!!🙏😊

Really good detailed step by step video. Feel very confident I could change a cassette myself now. Thank you.
Good informative video. One thing worth mentioning although the 11S markings on the gears face outwards they can only fit on the hub one way and cannot be reversed because of the hubs offset spline arrangement.
Thank you for these informative videos!!
A good mechanic thanks 🙏🏼

Thank you! This was very helpful.
Brilliant video 👍

X tools pro chain whip pliers👍
Nice one pal!
Thanks man!
Thanks for the tip!
You’re all ace’s… picked up a diy follower!
Thanks!

May need a spacer behind the cassette!
Cool, I like that, cheers.
Which face do you install the spacer on
Good for beginners 🤙
I guess the procedure is the same on all Shimano external gear hubs regardless of the number of gears?
Do you need to grease the freehub body before putting the cassette?
Lightly - see 12:10
I just bougth a shimano XT 11-speed 11-40 cassette and it looks like the gap between the smallest cog and next cog is wider than between all the other cogs... is this normal? Shouldn't they all be the same distance apart?
Do you spray any lube on the cassette after you replace/clean?
No not on the cassette!
When I fitted the new cassette it seemed like there was very little thread available to thread on the lock-ring. I'm sure It was installed correctly. Any ideas?
what tool do I have to use for the lock ring of a shimano 105 cassette 11-28, 11-speed ? is that a Tl-Lr15 ?
Yes!
What is the tool alternative to a chain whip called?
Chain whip pliers.
@@FreeToCycle thanks, found them on Amazon under cassette pliers. No more knuckle rash.
Hi, why the space between the smallest sprocket of a cassette and the one next to it (i.e., the space between the smallest and the second smallest sprockets) is bigger than the space between the rest of sprockets?
Yes, I'd like to iknow this too. I noticed this on the XT 11-40 11-speed cassete I bought.
Do you have a tutorial that covers removal of a cassette that is stuck on the free hub?
I don’t believe I have a video covering that, but I can soon make one if it helps you out!!
Free To Cycle
I can’t thank you enough. I just watched the video and will give it a go. I thoroughly appreciate your content and will continue to watch for new maintenance advice.
Can't open my casette. super firm and seems stuck. Need advice

I installed 105 cassette and it needed a spacer
Ok so I’ve accidentally jumbled them all up when cleaning them 😂 anyone know any tips on matching them back up
Freewheels are better. Far and away. You can take a freewheel off without it falling apart on you. Newer is not always better.
Hey how to reduce a 8 speed cassette into a 7-speed?
Thanks for your videos, they of a great value for me
