It's not that surprising considering every corporation in the world right now is prioritizing quantity over quality. Disney could care less if people love their movie, they just want people to tolerate it enough to take their kids to see it in theaters, and sit through it at home 100 more times streaming it on disney+
I know usually people exaggerate that a redo is "so much better than the original" but this really is, in many ways. There's parts that need polishing, but in that regard, the original is a god damned sea urchin

I love how your lyrics focus on keeping Magnifico’s arrogance about himself without getting distracted on things like his looks. Even though he’s done some kind things, he’s caught up on “how amazing he is” for them, which you balance well. It also helps to stitch together the pivot his character takes, rather than the switch coming out of nowhere.
"At all costs." The way you delivered that line broke my heart. It really sounded like Magnifico understood what he was sacrificing, what he was about to lose... And it saddened him. This is the kind of line and delivery people cling onto when imagining the villain can be redeemed.
Jonah I feel like you're underestimating your abilties because this is a genuinely really good rewrite. It just needs the professional mixing and mastering of the one we got and Chris Pine. Then it will be perfect
This is 100% how I feel about it, it's more than perfect but it still kisses a bit of professionalism mixing (for example the chorus and lyrics sounding more smooth), also while I do love the way he sings it a British voice actor is would totally sell it!!

Yeah the thing I like about disney musicals is the long note on the ending and the camera zooms out from the character. Like ariel's "part of your wooooooooorld" or genie's "never had a friend like meeeeeeeeee". That also applies to villain songs like the ending note of frollo's hellfire and scar's "be prepaaaaaaaaaaared" So Asha ending her song like "to have something more than.... this", I was like where's the rest of it? Lol I expected it to be longer. So Jonah doing the same long note to This Is The Thanks I Get was a big respect to the disney formula

They were chasing the success of Let It Go and We Don't Talk About Bruno that got radio play, and decided to make every song a pop hit. The problem is that pop songs are nothing like show tunes, and the crossovers were unique lightning strikes. The fact that they gave the love song duet to the hero and villain to sing after removing the love interest from the script really shows the priorities.

It 100% reads like he is baiting someone out of hiding so he can hurt them. ....Meanwhile in the original song, the line sounds like he genuinely just wants to talk it out 😂
I couldn’t agree more The original had me thinking “awww this poor sweet old man” whereas this version has me like “yikes, this king’s clearly been through the wringer and needs therapy, but somebody bring him to justice first!”
Not only does this sound better than the original, but it also gets the point of Magnifico's heel turn across way better. It's not just him randomly feeling disrespected due to his ego. He's been through the wringer to make Rosas as amazing as it is, and he wants to protect it. Framing his use of evil magic as a reluctant sacrifice instead of an irrational fit makes him seem like what he's supposed to be: a well-intentioned ruler who thinks he knows better.
My only suggestion is instead of "In this book I may have my mind lost", it'd be "In this book my mind may be lost". Feels cleaner and more direct putting focus on the mind

As I said before this rewrite does a better job of showing the king going mad. I love that this song gives more time to show him slowly breaking down. Better the song bring it back to his origin story being the catalyst or reason behind him going mad with paranoia. Nicely done!
Your version also brings out the cooler ideas the original melody was going for (trouble…crumble). It’s clever. I also like that the instrumental overhaul doesn’t strip the song of the original “upbeat villain” idea, and the snare helps maintain the integrity of the song while elevating it. This makes him feel like a sassy, tired, overworked ruler who means well and is trying his best. I feel like this would have been perfect in a storyline where Asha slowly realises how problematic granting everyone's dream could be. Her spreading her veiws and gathering supporters but not fully realising the consequences of her actions. All the while the king desperately tries to hold everything together, giving emphasis on the message that one person's wish could be another's nightmare. How we dont always NEED an imediate fix and need to learn how to appreciate life for what it is sometimes. Also how we need to take different points of view into consideration, and that old traditional veiws aren't always as "outdated and pointless" as we sometimes believe them to be and are actually lessons and warnings passed down to avoid the same mistake being repeated by the next generations. This could have been a good movie about friction between "the old and new order" and finding balace between the two, like they could have a council shown at the end who actively discuss which wish to grant so the decision isnt only in the hands of a single person or something, connecting it back to Disney's theme of "tradition" that they were going for.

they should've given magnifico an edge beyond just magic. he's the frickin king of a *fully* loyal kingdom. they should've given him military power at the beginning, making the time he used his powers more threatening. your use of the drums couldve further highlighted this shift from reliance to his army to the swishing magicky mumbling at the end :3 (overall going from a heavy, grounded bassy feel to more uncontrollable, cutting wind instruments). man i really wish (lol) they made a more frightening and compelling villain as it's been a while. eitherway,, these were amazing! this and the i are a star song had some truly amazing bars ksksk. and nice villain voice! ^^

This version succeds at making hik both a bit symphatetic and a proper villain with a saviour complex. Disney has been woobifying their villains for far too long and this includes Magnifico, so kudos on this rewrite!!

I can’t believe you not only made it make sense, but made it into a genuinely awesome villain song. In the original, every “This is the thanks I get” is the same angry and annoyed “I’m awesome and nobody appreciates it!”. In this version not only can each one be interpreted differently, but it tells a story. With the first one he’s frustrated with how things are, exasperated but ultimately resigned to it. As if to say “So that’s how it is, I give them everything and they give nothing in return, this is just the thanks I get.” After he starts cheering himself up, he reinforces his own hype and confirms his own greatness, and he is baffled and starts questioning it. “Are they crazy or something? Don’t they see everything I do for them? this is really the thanks I get?” Once he resolves to use the book, he becomes much more sinister, and finally puts matters into his own hands. “I won’t accept this, I’ve put everything I have into this, this is the thanks I get? Heh, No, I don’t think so…” He goes from frustrated to questioning to resolved. It makes his turn to evil so much better and understandable. my only problem is that I’m not sure it was actually intentional or if I’m just reading too far into it, it works with the lyrics but the inflections for each one don’t fully match what I’ve said. But either way, I have an amazing villain song that I want to sing with passion. For me it’s like the difference between “How bad can I be” and “Biggering” from the Lorax. One of them might be catchy and pop-y, but I know which one I’m going to be belting out with emotional fervor.

There's something about this version that makes the song much more creepy and sinister especially the main chorus and I'm living for it
Your version also brings out the cooler ideas the original melody was going for (trouble…crumble). It’s clever. I also like that the instrumental overhaul doesn’t strip the song of the original “upbeat villain” idea, and the snare helps maintain the integrity of the song while elevating it. This is extremely impressive work.

This is a banger flows better than the original
This makes him feel like a sassy, tired, overworked ruler who means well and is trying his best. I feel like this would have been perfect in a storyline where Asha slowly realises how problematic granting everyone's dream could be. Her spreading her veiws and gathering supporters but not fully realising the consequences of her actions. All the while the king desperately tries to hold everything together, giving emphasis on the message that one person's wish could be another's nightmare. How we dont always NEED an imediate fix and need to learn how to appreciate life for what it is sometimes. Also how we need to take different points of view into consideration, and that old traditional veiws aren't always as "outdated and pointless" as we sometimes believe them to be and are actually lessons and warnings passed down to avoid the same mistake being repeated by the next generations. This could have been a good movie about friction between "the old and new order" and finding balace between the two, like they could have a council shown at the end who actively discuss which wish to grant so the decision isnt only in the hands of a single person or something, connecting it back to Disney's theme of "tradition" that they were going for.

I don’t say this to stick it to Disney’s wish… but this is a legitimately better song. You conveyed exactly what magnifico is all about what he seeks to protect. Flow beautifully and the cadence is on point. You wrote poetry where the original was AI shlock. Keep it up! Maybe, if we’re lucky and all subscribe hard enough, we can blow yer channel up

the delivery of "at all costs" was some genuinely professional stuff
they should've given magnifico an edge beyond just magic. he's the frickin king of a *fully* loyal kingdom. they should've given him military power at the beginning, making the time he used his powers more threatening. your use of the drums couldve further highlighted this shift from reliance to his army to the swishing magicky mumbling at the end :3 (overall going from a heavy, grounded bassy feel to more uncontrollable, cutting wind instruments). man i really wish (lol) they made a more frightening and compelling villain as it's been a while.

I can’t believe you not only made it make sense, but made it into a genuinely awesome villain song.
In the original, every “This is the thanks I get” is the same angry and annoyed “I’m awesome and nobody appreciates it!”.
In this version not only can each one be interpreted differently, but it tells a story.
With the first one he’s frustrated with how things are, exasperated but ultimately resigned to it. As if to say “So that’s how it is, I give them everything and they give nothing in return, this is just the thanks I get.”
After he starts cheering himself up, he reinforces his own hype and confirms his own greatness, and he is baffled and starts questioning it. “Are they crazy or something? Don’t they see everything I do for them? this is really the thanks I get?”
Once he resolves to use the book, he becomes much more sinister, and finally puts matters into his own hands. “I won’t accept this, I’ve put everything I have into this, this is the thanks I get? Heh, No, I don’t think so…”
He goes from frustrated to questioning to resolved.
It makes his turn to evil so much better and understandable.
my only problem is that I’m not sure it was actually intentional or if I’m just reading too far into it, it works with the lyrics but the inflections for each one don’t fully match what I’ve said.
But either way, I have an amazing villain song that I want to sing with passion.
For me it’s like the difference between “How bad can I be” and “Biggering” from the Lorax. One of them might be catchy and pop-y, but I know which one I’m going to be belting out with emotional fervor.
