I'm in my 50's, with a very bad back and so far one crappy ankle, so I don't hike. I do enjoy watching you both going to places I wouldn't see otherwise.
Wow, that rainbow 🌈 was like a celebration at the end of that crazy road! We were happy that you guys made it, and the eagles didn't change over to vultures! 😉. We're sure that Trinity appreciates all that you went through to accommodate her! You guys are fantastic, and the glacier was fabulous! 😀 🧊
Was lucky enough to see 2 Bald Eagles in FL by our house and was amazed at how beautiful and huge they are! So different seeing them in person they are absolutely gorgeous!
Absolutely gorgeous! You guys were so lucky there had been a washout, or you could've had some hairy situations with more traffic. But, you showed true Alaskan spirit! No guts no glory! Your video had some truly majestic moments! Thanks for sharing your adventure. I love seeing people discover our state. Us Alaskans still have the same WOW factor, and I've been here 50+ years. It's truly like no other place on earth.
Wow! What a FANTASTIC adventure on the glacier! And so reasonable too. We have glaciers here in New Zealand and I’ve walked up to one but never on it, so thank you for taking me on one!! So pleased Trinity doesn’t eat your shoes 👟!!
I'm shocked she doesn't honestly. She has chewed into one pair of Kalyns (Of course her favorites) but other than that she just moves the shoes around occasionally. -J
Subsistence dip net fishing is only for Alaskans because we use it for personal use food. It cannot be sold, or traded legally, and you have to have an in state license and be a legal resident of Alaska to participate. Elders can get a proxy to allow someone to fish for them. There are lots of limits and rules and only certain species can be taken. The season opens and closes based on the number of salmon running at any given time.
You are so lucky. When we were there in 1999 McCarthy was not a thing and the McCarthy road was considered only passable by 4wd off road vehicles. After watching The Edge of Alaska series I would so loved to have visited the mine area.
Indeed! All the roads (from anything I have seen) have improved drastically over the past 2 decades. Before we came up here I could usually quickly tell if the advice I was receiving was from someone who traveled the roads in the 2020's vs. the 1990's. 🙂 -J
Y’all are too adventurous, and thanks for taking us along but there’s no way I would have gone down that road! Craig and Victoria did the right thing first of all I kept looking for a place to turn around and didn’t seem to be any until the end. Love your videos and channel. That glacier tour was outstanding, I guess it made the trip there worth it.
And it only gets better, right? “Travel beyond this point not recommended” Joe & Kalyn: “Surely that doesn’t mean us, right?” And you wonder why Craig & Victoria went on ahead???!!!
OMG, I watched all of the show The Edge of Alaska all about the town of McCarthy. And your there!!! And your going to the Kennecott mine now!!!??? Wow!!! So jealous. Have fun, be safe. Safe travels here on our. You guys are doing awesome !
I’m not super risk averse, but between the sign and the guy signaling to turn around I wouldn’t have been as brave as you were. I’m so happy for you that your courage paid off!
We had done research prior to see if others had taken larger rigs down. 🙂 If the sign had been our only data point I would have stopped there as well. -J
In England, we have "cream teas" it's an English breakfast tea with a scone that has raisins in it and comes from Cornwall and Devon one county puts fruit jam (Jelly) on the scone first and clotted cream on top and the other county puts clotted cream then fruit jam (Jelly) on top even the Queen got in trouble for the way she chose to layer her scone.
"Off Roading with Open Roading" Adventures in the back country camping. Who needs a 4 wheel drive Jeep. Great video guys. Next week, Off Roading repairs with Joe on the Open Road.
My husband and I went to Kennicott and McCarthy for our glacier hike over ten years ago. Our drive from Seward was a crazy long and bumpy drive, but the hike on the glacier was amazing, and so worth it!!! We used Alaska Toursaver coupons for that excursion along with many others and did it buy 1 get 1 free, too! I love watching your videos and enjoying all your travels!! 😊Stay safe!!
You might want to look up that Alaska Toursaver book! It was $100, and we saved over $2000 and that was 10 years ago! The hike on the glacier you took was in that book. That's how we learned of it. Just a cool way to save when you're booking everything yourself.
Yay!! @OpenRoading Our best find was the Whale Watching Tour in Seward BOGO. We saw a whale who breached for us repeatedly over an hour. I am loving your trip and all the fun you guys have!!
Dip net fishing in Alaska is reserved for Alaska residents only. It allows people to catch a lot of salmon in a relatively short period to fill their freezers for the year. A head of household is allowed 25 salmon, and for each additional household member the household is allowed 10 more salmon.
Also, dip netting is only allowed a certain time of year and in certain areas only. Subsistence fishing and hunting is a big way of life for A LOT of Alaskans.
Awesome video - beautiful footage! Your rainbow shots looked photoshopped they are so perfect! So - should I take my Ram dually pulling my 41’ fifth wheel??
Depends on how much of an adventure you want. 😂 You CAN do it. The bridge will feel even more narrow to you but honestly the biggest challenge will be for something your size will be parking at the bottom. If you google "Base Camp Kennicott" you will see the parking area ($45 a night dry camping). We weren't able to fit in that main parking lot and had to go down that little dirt road a bit further to park. There is also some more parking on the other side. -J
Yep! We're watching them. We're still a month our from crossing back out of Alaska so I THINK we'll be able to go through Jasper, but if not, we know the right alternate routes! -J
Well Joseph…I gotta say you got bigger cajones than I do. I would never take our fifth wheel on that road. And we have a 4 wheel drive dually. I give you much respect for the your courage doing that. The end result looked amazing!
Part of it comes from having a beast of a 20 year old RV. If I didn’t know 100% that she can handle whatever I throw at her I would have been more cautious. -J
Dip netting is used to catch Salmon and Hooligans. What a scary road! Beautiful scenery and the Eagle was awesome. Trinity takes all this traveling in such stride😅 her and Cody are pros ❤ though Trinity looked pretty nervous on that bridge....in the storm! Great pictures Kayln .
Thank you for taking us with you on a glacier that was beautiful... but some of those crevasses were very scary looking! So, I was wondering if there was any settling happening while you were walking on the glacier? I have that same mug from Pawhuska!🙌 You are definitely making the most of Alaska!
I’m way behind watching your latest adventure in Alaska and you never disappoint! 😂❤ What a stunning majestic landscape! I am jonesing to go to Alaska now! It wouldn’t be as much fun without the typical Joe and Kalyn antics…and Trinity the shoe burglar! 😆🤣👏🏼❤️
Catching up on your videos (we were on vacation) and I think this is my favorite ever! I know that anxiety feeling when you are on a road you are not sure you should be on😬
What a stressful trip! Great storytelling there - -you had me on the edge of my seat. And great camerawork! (The shoes smell like you and give her comfort. Our dogs do this when we're going a long time and they get anxious, too.)
What a terrific ‘skeeter & moss ball filled episode! Watching you on the glacier was a perfect example on why perseverance in pursuing your dreams I so important! Here’s to many more weeks in Alaska!
I finally got a mosquito net, and it really is awesome. I thought it would be weird, but bugs flying around my face, especially mosquitoes, I truly hate. It really makes some places much more enjoyable. I think it would be worth it in alaska, and they are super lightweight and small in your pack.
I truly enjoyed your adventure. Could I ask a favor? Could you please do some shots of what you're seeing and share some of the beauty? Most viewers will never see what you're seeing so please let us live vicariously through you by letting us see some more of the beauty around you. I love seeing you, but also keep hoping for a taste of the Alaskan vistas. Thanks.
Thank you for the feedback. Much like any road anywhere else in the USA not every turn is a beautiful vista. A lot of this road was lined by trees actually. Not all - and we certainly could have shown more out the window shots. But if you watch our time lapse sequence toward the end you are watching miles pass and you'll see...not a lot changes (Other than the weather. 😂) But once you show one part of an area once, it's much the same looking for the next several miles as you continue to pass the same mountain. We would have done a lot more drone video (which is easier to show beautiful scenery from a different perspective since you can get above the treeline) but the majority of this drive, including the epic bridge, are within the National Park boundaries so that means we legally can't fly the drone so it limits us to what we can see through the windows....which is funny, because weekly we get comments form viewers wishing they didn't have to see our motorcycle so much in all our scenery video. 😂 I do think you will enjoy our drive to Valdez next week. A lot more of what people think of when they think "Alaska" when it comes to scenery! -J
Thanks for Sharing... Guys you obviously made of the Glacier, Good thing i didn't hear it in the News lower 48 couple fall down a Crevasse never to be seen again but there's a fifth wheel for sale, lol.
Wow! What an amazing adventure! I just came across your channel 2 videos ago. You guys are awesome! I have always wanted to travel like that. Thanks for sharing. I am living through your videos. I'm loving every minute of it! Stay safe and may God Bless your journeys! 😊❤
I can’t even…my entire body was clenched until you arrived safely in McCarthy!!! You guys are killing me! I gotta add, however, that rainbow shot was incredible!♥
That’s why we are on the Colorado river in Parker Strip. Az Hail!!! All hail no! I will take 118 on the river any/everyday. On BTW, no mosquitoes here. Enjoy you two.
Good idea. We have everything decently secured, this breakage happened because the door opened enough for the pan to become subject to the forces of gravity. 😂 -J
J don't worry about picking a measurement system. A Brit once told me that, they even though they use the metric system, most people still use feet where applicable. It's the only unit that doesn't have a rough equivalent in the metric system.
Eeeeee!! THAT was a ride! 😳 #1 What an unforgettable memory you made! Priceless. This is what it’s all about. Congrats ❤️ #2 Not gunna lie. I had to stop watching and take a break twice! My nerves got the best of me. You guys are beasts LOL #3 I was SO freaking happy by the end. I’m STILL smiling. What an incredible experience. Thanks again for taking us with you. Lastly, do you use TST pressure monitors? I have a few and will be in the States until October for mailing…lmk ps Victoria and Craig are whimps. 🤣 Just kidding!
LOL to your PS. I think it has a lot more to do with the fact that our rig is 20 years old…we’re much more willing to beat her up. 😂 😂😂 I think if I had a new rig I’d second guess some of our decisions. -J
In the north you really want some bug spray with Deet! The more the better. I'm from Maine and it's the same with mosquitoes and black flies. Only Deet works. They just snack on the other stuff!
I’m loving your Alaska adventure and this video was awesome. So glad you made it to McCarthy and did the glacier tour. Totally breathtaking. Trinity is the sweetest dog. You can see she loves you.
Such a beautiful place!! I applaud your bravery you guys!! Enjoy your time there, and have fun with the bugs!! I know about mosquitoes, growing up in No. Mn they were horrified!!
Awesome vid...and love the eagles... TIP:get you some "Grip-easy shelf liner"..for your dishes, anything on the counter,"coffee machine",they work very well,as we put them in our travel trailer....everything stays put,..u can also put them in between your plates, pots, bake ware,no rattling, or breaking....can also use in the fridge.
I did a guided hike on Root Glacier also. Glacier was an awesome experience! I was there on July 1st and didn't have any mosquitos on the trail to the glacier. I was lucky I guess!
I lived in Washington State most of my life and YES! THEY ARE SO AMAZING!! When we went fishing they would hang around and some of the fishermen would toss a fish up in the air and the bald eagles would swoop down and take the fish to their massive nest!! Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! ❤❤❤
You are way younger than us. I am glad I missed that road 5 years ago. Glad you had fun, but that would have aggravated me. Hope you are still having fun. Always looking forward to your next episode.
In Washington State, we take bald eagles for granted. We have them all over Western WA. And when we go on the Alaska cruise. We're always amazed at how many people really have never seen a Bald eagle. Glad you are having fun. And showing people to step out of their comfort zones.
I know that I'm commenting only 15 miles in but I'm already planning to make this trip to McCarthy next year when we do Alaska with the RV. Slow & easy!
Slow is the key! And have a spare tire because flats are common. Depending on the length of your rig, parking at the bottom can be tricky - but one thing we weren't aware of until after you parked is there is more parking to the right of the road down there too and that may be easier to get into with a larger rig (no promises!) -J
WHAT!?! WE MISSED SOMETHING PEANUT BUTTER RELATED?!?!?! That's it.... we're heading back. 😂 I saw signs... I never saw the actual truck. But I also wasn't looking so it was probably right there in plain sight. -J
I’m happy you both are having a blast. I enjoy everyone of your videos. For gnats and mosquitoes we use vanilla little trees for car vents. We cut them in pieces to fit on collars and hats. Bugs don’t like the smell of vanilla. These things last for weeks. Anyway keep up your videos and enjoy your travels. 👍🏻
I went to the Army Mountain & Glacier climbing school at Greeley in 1968. Glacier climbing is incredible. Was a Cirque glacier. Camped on top of it for a week. Waaay cool.
Holy cow, I heard it was bad up there but Wow ! Yes definitely worth a life time experience .. that was so cool and amazing, fresh ice cold glazer water, how cool is that 💯 thanks for sharing and can’t wait for more ❤
Hey old timer (I kid!), can I ask you to put the playlist in order from oldest at the top to newest at the bottom? Makes catching up on multiple videos a lot easier
My cousins used to live there in Glenn Allen & was a doctor there. He retired and they moved back to Oklahoma. I would love to travel there but with my health and disabilities. I am extremely limited right now.
Thank you for going through all the extra effort to keep Trinity with you! Hope your plans take you to Homer. Eagles live there. MORE live on the drive out to Homer. There is a small gravel parking lot on the left, about 12-15 miles north of Homer. On Diamond Creek. Hike the trail out to the creek and it’s amazing. Eagles play just over your heads. Dozens of them. Keep enjoying Alaska and get a net to protect your head and face.
Awesome video and loved the glacier hike. I would’ve done the same thing and pulled my trailer down that road. It would be worth it at the end. Looking forward to next weeks adventures.❤
Yes, it's dipnetting. Where you are and the time of the year they are dipnetting for copper river reds (salmon). If you end up down the Kenai towards the end of july, locals will be dipnetting in the kenai River for reds (salmon). There will be traffic. Yes, you have to be an alaska resident to dip net. rental car companies will not allow you to take their car on that road to Mccarthy. That's how bad it is. To my knowledge, they have done work on that road recently.
You guys are rebels aren’t you? lol What majesty. Love these beautiful shots you take. I have said it before, y’all are a breath of fresh air. You are so real. And hilarious. You should see my husband and me together. Now I cannot wait until next Friday. I am always just so anxious to hear what the latest adventure or natural beauty is.
O'l Texas tip! Search "Permethrin 10%" mix 1 oz to 32oz water mix well and spray! Safe on dogs, and will last up to 3 wash cycles. The name store bought brand is "Sawyers" (yellow bottle) I soak my hiking clothes (hat, socks, shoes everything!) Then air dry. *it will kill bees!* and harmful to cats when wet. So just know that. ---- J - you owned that road man! Looking fwd to yall next one!
I also love every chance I get to see a Bald Eagle in the wild. I had one fly right over my car when I was going to work, he was heading to the River I was crossing to hunt food I bet. The glacier was beautiful and I would love to do that. Oh, my goodness I could see the mosquitoes swarming you guys! All I can say on the mosquitoes is Vitamin B12... in Girl Scouts they recommended it to repel mosquitoes and I have to say it works!!! I used to spend my summers covered in mosquitoe bites, but not anymore.
Sounds like the glacier guides should start offering hats with mosquito nets.
Not a bad idea! Or I should have been better prepared. 😁 -J
That shot of the Mountains with the rainbow at your McCarthy base camp was amazing.
It was such a beautiful gift at the end of the long drive! -J
There IS no wrong way to PB&J! That said, if you PB BOTH pieces of bread (a little lighter than you would normally do one side) then put the J in the middle, you eliminate bread sogginess nearly entirely. 😉

Me too! Hate soggy bread😬
A great idea! I’ve tried it a few times. The jelly slid out of the sandwich if I didn’t keep it level.

Wow! What an amazing adventure! I just came across your channel 2 videos ago. You guys are awesome! I have always wanted to travel like that. Thanks for sharing. I am living through your videos. I'm loving every minute of it! Stay safe and may God Bless your journeys! 😊❤
So glad you found us! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave an encouraging comment! -J
I can’t even…my entire body was clenched until you arrived safely in McCarthy!!! You guys are killing me! I gotta add, however, that rainbow shot was incredible!♥
Rainbow made it worth it! 😂 -J
That’s why we are on the Colorado river in Parker Strip. Az
Hail!!! All hail no!
I will take 118 on the river any/everyday.
On BTW, no mosquitoes here.
Enjoy you two.
Kalyn wouldn't let me keep the chapter name as "Hail no" for that section. 😂 -J
Love that adventure. I also feel they same hiking i don't need snacks or lunch, but really love a big camp fire dinner.
What a beautiful experience. Thank you for taking us along on the glacier hike. I'd say this is one of your best videos. Blessings.
Thank you so much I'm really enjoying this trip with you two
I hope you guys had a great week!🎉🎉
You too Anthony!! 🥇
I was so nervous with you! 😬 But then that rainbow 🌈 and that beautiful glacier hike 🧊 what an amazing adventure 🤩
The rainbow felt like such a big payoff after driving that road!! The glacier too! -K
Put towels in all your cupboards and even fridge. It keeps stuff in place and from breaking.
Good idea. We have everything decently secured, this breakage happened because the door opened enough for the pan to become subject to the forces of gravity. 😂 -J
So beautiful. I have only hiked on one glacier...Franz Joseph in New Zealand. Much of it is gone now. That was back in 2001.
WOW! just WOW
Oh my gosh! What an awesome experience!!! Your narration Makes me want to put this trip in my bucket list.
It was a beautiful area! - J
J don't worry about picking a measurement system. A Brit once told me that, they even though they use the metric system, most people still use feet where applicable. It's the only unit that doesn't have a rough equivalent in the metric system.
We noticed every empty lot that was for sale in Canada was advertised by how many square feet it was. Made me lol. -J
Eeeeee!! THAT was a ride! 😳
#1 What an unforgettable memory you made! Priceless. This is what it’s all about. Congrats ❤️
#2 Not gunna lie. I had to stop watching and take a break twice! My nerves got the best of me. You guys are beasts LOL
#3 I was SO freaking happy by the end. I’m STILL smiling. What an incredible experience. Thanks again for taking us with you.
Lastly, do you use TST pressure monitors? I have a few and will be in the States until October for mailing…lmk
ps Victoria and Craig are whimps. 🤣 Just kidding!
LOL to your PS. I think it has a lot more to do with the fact that our rig is 20 years old…we’re much more willing to beat her up. 😂 😂😂 I think if I had a new rig I’d second guess some of our decisions. -J
Great episode as always. So much beautiful scenery!! Thanks for sharing guys!
In the north you really want some bug spray with Deet! The more the better. I'm from Maine and it's the same with mosquitoes and black flies. Only Deet works. They just snack on the other stuff!
Thanks for the…deets! (Couldn’t help myself. 😂) -J
I’m loving your Alaska adventure and this video was awesome. So glad you made it to McCarthy and did the glacier tour. Totally breathtaking. Trinity is the sweetest dog. You can see she loves you.
Amazing Guys ! keep it coming, really Jelly!
Thanks so much! -J
So worth it, well for us anyway - we appreciate your sacrifice for, that glacier, it was amazing,
It really was! Glad you enjoyed it!! -J
Such a beautiful place!! I applaud your bravery you guys!! Enjoy your time there, and have fun with the bugs!! I know about mosquitoes, growing up in No. Mn they were horrified!!
Joseph loves a challenge…lofty goals!!
😁
Wonderful episode. ❤❤❤❤
Thanks! -J
Man the view out of your back window in that park must have been AMAZING! Great job guys, keep having fun!!
I did a guided hike on Root Glacier also. Glacier was an awesome experience! I was there on July 1st and didn't have any mosquitos on the trail to the glacier. I was lucky I guess!
NICE! Glacier trip plus no mosquitoes on the trail!!! JACKPOT! 🙂 -J
For sure! If you grow up on the east coast they are few and far between! -J
Love your content and sharing the cost break downs. I'll put this on my 'Alaska' list too...;-)
I know that I'm commenting only 15 miles in but I'm already planning to make this trip to McCarthy next year when we do Alaska with the RV.
You missed the best part of Kennicott, the food truck! Best pb cup brownies ever!!!!!
WHAT!?! WE MISSED SOMETHING PEANUT BUTTER RELATED?!?!?! That's it.... we're heading back. 😂
I saw signs...
Beautiful scenes thanks for taking us along ❤
So glad you enjoy watching each week, Linda! -J
I went to the Army Mountain & Glacier climbing school at Greeley in 1968. Glacier climbing is incredible. Was a Cirque glacier. Camped on top of it for a week. Waaay cool.
Trinity is missing the work camp in Texas. “What have they gotten me into!”
@@Livin_inRVA 😂😂😂
Haha! To this day when she see's white trucks she thinks they are food trucks. (The oil field workers that fed her scraps all had white pickups) -J
Done! (On the big Alaska roadtrip playlist)
@@OpenRoadingthat's some top notch service! Thank you, looking forward to seeing the rest of the trip 🦅
The reward of a stunning view and a rainbow! ❤
My cousins used to live there in Glenn Allen & was a doctor there. He retired and they moved back to Oklahoma. I would love to travel there but with my health and disabilities. I am extremely limited right now.
I hope we were able to give a glimpse without making your heart ache. 🙏🏻
@@OpenRoading yes you did & do thank you
Great video! Gorgeous!!!!!
Thanks! (catching up on the comments over here) -J
For the mosquitoes try vanilla essential oil, mixed 50-50 with alcohol and then a couple of pinches of cinnamon mix in a spray bottle
It was better than we expected but still quite rough! The wonderful people in the tour with us said they couldn’t rent a car to get there. Wild! -J
Glaciers really are amazing.
They are! I’m hooked on them now and want to do more glacier exploring. -J
You guys are rebels aren’t you? lol
What majesty. Love these beautiful shots you take. I have said it before, y’all are a breath of fresh air. You are so real. And hilarious. You should see my husband and me together.
Now I cannot wait until next Friday. I am always just so anxious to hear what the latest adventure or natural beauty is.
Slight rebels. Just a hint of it. 👀 -J
Interesting!! Thanks for the info! -J
Option # 3:

😂
That road is the best dirt road in Nevada. Travelled it in 1998 and again in 2012.
Yes I know, that road is in Alaska for all you folks
haha! -J
So fun!! Thank you for sharing!
so incredible beautiful its worth the dirt..
Thanks! This was awesome!!
