      Norman Deles Nobody ignored it. Fainting is not lethal and the nurse remained calm as she should when a patient passed out. Last thing you want to wake up to after passing out is a nurse freaking out which will only cause more stress because after passing out you literally forget what just happened. She payed attention to him and did the right thing.

      Because if the fainting is heart related then a chance exists that the top part could be leaking blood in from an infection and too much hydration would increase the dumping of blood and blow off the Aorta.

      They didn't worry about it happening because he was already sitting and the nurse was there they didn't have to worry about him falling and hurting himself and they knew he would come out of it in a few seconds and there was a Dr at the desk too. He was completely monitored and it's actually a common reaction for people so the nurse knew he was fine and that's why when he said it would happen she said it's fine you are already sitting in a wheelchair.

      This happened to me and when I woke up there was 2-3 nurses and a doctor right by me checking on me. Fainting can be very serious and should always require attention, especially in a HOSPITAL.. They dont know if it could've been some kind of allergic reaction or something like that. Or even accidently injecting an air bubble, which could lead to stroke or death. Complications and accidents CAN happen, even in something as simple as getting a shot.

    She asked him if he was okay and every time he responded with a clear "NO". She didn't stop to reassure him or explain anything to him or even ask him what she could do or what he needed to help him feel better. She was very careless during her job and she's lucky he didn't fall out of the wheelchair because it would be her head if he had since he told her he had a fainting problem and needed to lay down! She practically mocked him and made light of it and said if you fall you'll fall back in your wheelchair. Extremely rude and careless! There was a quick moment shortly after he fainted that I actually thought he was going to fall forward and out of the wheelchair.. Pure negligence on her part!

    TRICK: FLEX YOUR MUSCLES (but relax the one that the needle is going in). You faint because your blood is rushing away from your head. Flexing forces blood back into your head. Sort of like a Jet pilot and G's. People don't understand that it's a weird reflex. Has nothing to do with pain, just a strange involuntary psychosomatic response.

    This is what happens when we communicate in a non Nonchalant manner. People in hospitals don’t take it seriously. When I had gallbladder pain and went to the hospital I wasn’t taken seriously because I wasn’t screaming in pain. My gallbladder almost burst because of the lack of reaction from the hospital staff. As soon as my blood work came back they said oh we need hospitalize you and to take you into surgery. Your blood levels are too high. The patient communicated that he faints because of the process and not because he fears the needle. That was a clear communication to lay him down. This is a lesson learned.

    As a LPN, I do know that I was taught to inject at the rate of 1mL per 10 seconds, but come on nobody actually injects medicine THAT slow. However, if that were my patient I definitely would NOT have just stood there and watched him faint like it was a joke. That nurse should have also known to support his fall because sadly when someone faints, a simple wheelchair will not stop them from falling out of it. Every muscle in your body is limp, you can fall in any direction.

      @balckbettystack 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Emily Joy I am a RN and I totally agree with you on your comments about injecting so slowly. Plus she neve drew back to see if she was in a blood vessel. And that she just watched him faint without making sure he was not going to hurt himself by fainting in the chair. Its a wonder he didn't actually end up on the floor. Then the fact she didn't bother to put the guy on a trolley when he told her he will faint. I would rather take the precaution of putting him somewhere safe than having to do all that paperwork when he lands on the floor possibly hurting himself.
      Bad nurse and nursing skills really.

      balckbettystack is there a rule or something where they can’t let you lay down while getting a shot or blood draw?
      Years ago I needed to get a blood draw and I asked to lay down because I knew I’d pass out but the nurse wouldn’t let me initially. She did the draw and I fainted. She needed to remove the needle so she could use both her hands to prevent me from falling off the chair. It was then she decided to let me lay down so she could do the whole process once more.

      As embarrassing as it is I had this happen today. I had to get a shot in my knuckle and the first one went as planned but then I started thinking about the process and how the needle was in the joint and digging into it and next thing I know I’m looking through a toilet paper roll and about to pass out. I felt that when he said he’s not afraid of the pain but the process. Your body reacts a certain way when it’s all mental.

    This is actually called a vassal Va gal Response. Some people do pass out or have syncopal episodes! The drs and nurses need to be paying attention when the patient says they are gonna pass out. Because they have had it happen to them before, it's usually something that takes place as the needle is being removed, but it's NOT a Funny thing. My husband use to always give blood, then one day after he had given it he totally passed out. Because of that he is no longer allowed to give blood. If he does need to have labs, he drinks extra fluids before hand, if its not a fasting lab.

    It was most likely a vasovagal reaction. It’s a physical response from your nervous system that can be triggered by seeing the needle, seeing your own blood, or just feeling anxious about the whole process. Some people feel nauseous, some feel dizzy, start sweating, look pale, or have a drop in heart rate or blood pressure causing them to faint. I found this out after googling it cause the same thing happens to me when I have blood drawn.

      I use to be deathly afraid. But after chemo, having a central line on my chest, blod draws 1-3 times a day, a line going from one side of my groin to a vein going down into my other leg, and a surgery that gave me rods in my femur and tibia with a full fake knee. Ya, im not scared anymore. Especially waking up to 7 iv lines in my hands , a catheter (biggest fear), and a huge surgical scar from above my knee halfway down my leg and a 3in surgical scar on the back of my leg so they can move a muscle.. Ya that was fun..
      Even more fun was when they removed the line in my leg. The doctor thought i had pain meds in my system. Well, i didnt. That was a tickling pain that made me pass out. Then waking up and asking is shes done as the preassure on my groin really hurt more than the line removal. Scared the crap out of the assistant. Good times. Gooood times...

      Kind of, It's a vasovagal syncope response (to fear, pain, vomiting) When the vagus nerve is triggered, you pass out, your blood pressure drops, and low blood pressure can cause seizures in non-epileptic people. My girlfriend has vasovagal syncope (needles), she passes out, has seizure like responses. It's actually often misdiagnosed as epilepsy because of that.

      I personally would rather take the extra time to find a bed, exam table, etc for a patient that may have a syncopal episode (for their comfort and particularly for their safety) a million times than risk drawing blood, starting an IV, giving an injection, etc. than have even one patient pass out while sitting up!

      Yeah, he postured, that doesn’t happen with vagal seizures. I’m not a doc, just the patient, but she definitely should have guarded protocol since he was sliding. His disorientation afterward was interesting too, could indicate vaso, normal post ictal has other symptoms. I just hope he’s ok now.

    He took the shot well and he cannot be blamed for fainting. It was not him as a person but it was purely his body which overreacted. He had no control over what his body did, causing him to faint. See "Grown Ups Fear Of Injection || Weekend 21" and "Craigs Blood Test Fiasco"" and you will see how well this man did in fact.

    I have fainted before after a blood test (at the hospital reception), and was screaming the house down this morning when I began a course of injections for necessary treatment. They couldn't even get the needle in the first time, and had to get another nurse in to hold my hand. I shrieked the second (successful) time too. I could just about walk afterwards (injection was in the abdomen). Those who say it's "only a scratch" don't know what they're talking about. The body's reaction is a completely natural and animal one.

    When I draw blood, I’m more careful with the young & muscular guys. True confession!!! 🤓 Love the friend’s reaction though! Lmao
    HOWEVER, if a patient is that nervous, I would have him lie down on a stretcher with the opposite side rail on & have assist ready just in case. Vitals check after. He won’t know when I’ve stuck him because I’ll guide him through breathing exercises. I do this daily... only, the patients are already lying down & secure from falls. ♥️
    Please don’t walk away from a fainting pt. even if it looks fake. 😬

    • @kristenking669

      it happens due to a sudden drop off of oxygen to the brain. it's connected to the "flight or fight" response. it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or so for the brain to restore its oxygen levels and then you regain consciousness. hope this helps.

    Her negligence could have gotten that hospital sued. First of all, she's most likely giving him narcotic pain medicine. He was bound to get drowsy. Second, he WARNED her he was going to faint. She should have had the good sense to get him onto a gurney, BEFORE the shot was administered. She sucks at nursing.

      narcotics into muscle do not take immediate affect like that, if it was iv than yes, but it would have to be pretty potent like dilaudid, morphine, or fentanyl.

    • @omgurheadsgone
      @omgurheadsgone 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Onewytlyter it was a intramuscular shot not an IV shot which means it was stuck into his bicep muscle and slowly administered. This will mean the medication takes 5 minutes or more to fully absorb into the muscle and get into his blood stream, even after she finishes the shot. It’s completely different then if he was hooked up to an IV. His fainting was not related to the narcotic pain killer but rather to a clear phobia of shots.
