Awesome comparison, thank you very much! I own the three canteens too and we have the same opinion: Nalgene stainless steel is the best of them in terms of survival, durability and ergonomics. A big like!

Wow great detailed comparison! Clearly the Nalgene is the better more refined design, I wish they made a steel lid with a silicon water tight gasket. I've read that 18/10 stainless steel is softer than 18/8 stainless steel and can scratch/gouge easier. So the Klean Kanteen could have the edge in that type of durability being 18/8 stainless steel and lighter weight. But Nalgene being 18/10 and thicker is still the winner. Especially with better lip, cleaning ability, threads and no weld seam. Pathfinder looks flimsy and bulky and its threads are a worry and looks hard to clean.
It fits in a standard military pouch. I’d carry one of those on my body and two of the kleen canteens as backup in my pack.
To clean, you do not need to keep vinegar with you. Keep a few Polydent or Efferdent denture sterilizing tabs in a tiny pill container or something. Fill with clean water drop in a few tabs let them dissolve and rinse with clean water and your canteen is sterilized. That or boil some water in it.
A tip from Dave Canterbury I use is in my water system is that I put a fish jaw spreader in with the gear. This way I can raise the bottle over a fire on a tripod and cord. The jaw spreader will work on any of these bottles. The jaw spreader will also work for lowering your bottle into a stream because it will not come out until you squeeze it to remove.

I had the hardest time deciding between the 64 oz klean kanteen and the 40. I went with the 40 for practicality.

I’ve seen a lot of reviews on metal bottles for survival bushcraft etc, and this is the first one that mentions the ability to use the wide thread of the round bottles (as opposed to kidney canteen) to reliably lower a bottle down into a water source from a cliff or ledge where you couldn’t reach it otherwise, that’s a very important ability actually
I’ve been favoring getting the kidney canteen style either stainless or titanium due to the flatter design of them so they sit flatter against the body so if running they don’t roll/wobble side to side like a round bottle does, and one ex-special forces guy used a ‘hardcover’ titanium canteen twisted up in a cotton shamagh as a bottle holder/bag which he tied to his body with a tight/snug half hitch and went on his runs with it (plus knife and fire steel etc) but no one ever died because their bottle was slightly wobbly, but I expect some have because they were lost and extremely dehydrated and by the time they found water it was out of reach because it was down a cliff, and a bottle that can be lowered down on a long piece of light cord will/could save their life
Also with the canteens I’m concerned about the fold/ridge around the middle of the canteen that it would harbor mold/bacteria etc and would be hard to get at to keep it clean and also would likely be a place that it could crack/break as it’s weakest point? Also the ridge around the top of the pathfinder canteen is bent inwards so would would also be more trouble to keep clean as opposed to rounder bottles that are bent outwards or not bend at all and are just a smooth mouth rim?
Thanks for the comment, yea being able to lower the canteen and also a wide mouth to collect water from shallow pools is critical. I think the nalgene canteen is the best out of all of them. Of course if you are really dehydrated you can just drink from a river. Rainwater and dew doesn't need to be boiled also so you can just squeeze out your shirt after a rain storm or build a water collection system with your tarp.

The pathfinder cup is the ww2 old style handle .The round ones are not G.I. ( government issue ) . You turn it upside down and squeeze then turn it rightside up and the locker slides down and locks ! As you use it heat it real hot then it will harden as it cools quickly !
the nalgene bottle is hands down the best choice as the grooves the way lid itself lashes to the bottle allows you to hang the bottle over the fire without need for any other item or cordage. you can use a wire you have already or fabricated one the field from natural cordage and hang it over a fire because of the deep grooves the lid screws have and that the lid uses to and lash to. the other 2 bottles lack this distinguishing feature. idk why you need 44 minutes of video to miss this point but somehow that happened. and just so you know i say this as a person who respects the hell outof dave cantury and if all things were equal i woulda given him my money, but the nalgene wins out for application
Nalgene gets my vote. Pathfinder gear is overpriced imo.

Fun fact water does not compressed and therefore it will damage stainless, galvanized steel, brass PVC to name a few, so if you let your container freeze in water, that's your fault not the cap/lid. Thanks for sharing.

The pathfinder nesting cup with the pathfinder canteen is based on the WW2 canteen cup which is older or more traditional design than the later design with folding wire butterfly handles that you are referring as traditional.

It is a wide mouth version of the M1910 canteen from the First World War. Indeed, it does vaguely resemble the older traditional 18th century kidney-shaped canteens. It is the one I have. Not a bad bottle, even if the cup and pouch leave a bit to be desired. I would prefer the more modern butterfly handles over the older handle design from the M1910. I find myself using the Pathfinder canteen by itself for water every day.
The only positive about the KK bottles is that they also sell a 64 oz / 2 L version, which makes melting snow efficient.

I wanted a Nalgene bottle because it is made in the USA, but could not find one. Then I found the Kleen Kanteen 40 oz for only $13.00, score.

I concur with your conclusions, sir. I have at least 3 Nalgene SS bottles. They are practically indestructible. I think all three are made in China, but with different build qualities.

Yea they're canteen is the best on the market in my opinion. Little heavy but if you want a bomb prood survival canteen for boiling and cooking that's the one.
I’ve waited one months for my nalgene stainless bottle and it never showed. I’ve been issued a refund, it seems as though there are none available for purchase and the nalgene website doesn’t even have them on their site.
Probably due to covid panic buying

Thanks for watching, subscribe for more reviews. They are not interchangeable unfortunately. Nalgene has a much different thread pattern.
44 min and you didn’t even weigh them? Maybe you can get that in the next video when you field test them. I think having one of those pathfinders stoves will be more valuable than you realize. Klean kanteen was the only game in the single wall stainless steel business when I got mine. I quickly realized boiling water in the nesting cup was the way to go. Also a folding rocket stove type apparatus to quickly and easy (mostly temperate type environments) boil water with small twigs was a huge energy saver. I guess I don’t like bottoning wood as the rest of utube.

Can you use a eco kanteen? To boil water. Is it just like a kleen kanteen?
do you filter drinking water first then boil it or vice versa, also will boiling water in the canteen clean out any mold?
Bleach dries up and kills mold. Boiling can get rid of mold too but you will have to scrub it. If you are trying to filter out bacteria, viruses, or parasites then you don't need to filter if you are already boiling because boiling will kill them all. If you are using chlorine dioxide or iodine it is recommended to use filter first then chemicals after to get the smaller viruses and stuff that the filter couldn't get rid of. If you are trying to remove chemicals then you filter first before boiling.
I know this is a 2 year old video but if at all possible I am curious if all the lids are compatible with one another.

The Nalgene is the only thick one, the others are pretty thin.
Can the Canteens go straight on the fire? Won't the lids melt? Or am I misunderstanding?
You boil with the lid off then take it off and let it cool a little before putting lid back on. They can go straight on the fire yes.
