    Almost 66 and loved this in the 60s, used to do it with my great aunt Nellie who was a big fan and knew all the 60s dance crazes, from this, to the twist, the macarena which is an old song, the mash potato, the funky chicken, you name it, she had a go at it despite her being in her late 50s at the time. She died in 1972 aged 72, so many happy memories of a fun lady who taught me about music, dancing and the art of baking. A lady of many talents. Very much missed. First thing I will do when it's my time is to depart this world is to get her on Heaven's dance floor and really rock the joint. and bake the angels some delicious pies. lol. Happy days.

    Thank you Shirley Ellis for your contribution to American music, so many great songs came out during this time, while the country was going through racial and discrimination and segregation in the south. There was hope for progress and great dreams of unity. 🇺🇸❤️ may God watch over this nation.

    Love this song!
    Shirley Ellis had some really tunes.
    I had her on 45s and 33s.
    Kinda puzzled about this performance, though.
    Wondering why they're doing 'Hitchhiker' dance moves in a line dance to The Clapping Song.
    Great to hear Shirley again, since my treasured record collection was a victim of careless moving men and extreme sunshine.
    Thanx muchly for sharing this little gem!

    Listen to some more Shirley. She and her backing band put out some fantastic rhythms. Heavy horns and saxes. Try, "Iko Iko" by the, oops, just forgot the name of the band, but it's an old New Orleans song about two floats in a parade. It's based on a much older song. We all used to jump rope and this was an example of the rhymes we made up to jump to (as mentioned by Lms Stc). We all did it in different words. But Shirley put out a lot of fantastic music that most people haven't heard.

    It was not such a bad world back then. Look how respectable everyone was dressed. They all look very nice. Sort of like their "Sunday go to meeting" duds .Very attractive clothes. Dancing very respectable & just having plain clean fun. We need another Shirley Ellis again to bring us to our senses. What a great lady. The worst thing back then was the Vietnam War. She helped us to forget about all of that with her talent & sweet personality. OMG, today there is so very much division amongst people. I really do not think January 6th insurrection would have happened in the 60's It should have NEVER happened. If that is what MAGA is all about, no thanks. America has always been great. It always will be great. He did not make it better. He tore the fabric of America. We do not need to tear the fabric our of our country as JFK said so succinctly to the clergy in the Rice Hotel in Houston, Texas on September 12, 1960, just prior to his winning in 1960. It was called The Greater Ministerial Association. He won them over. Unfortunately, so did another leader win people over & it caused terrible violence on January 6. Police officers were assaulted & killed. Malicious destruction of a beautiful American landmark So very hard to think a leader would incite such a horror as Trump incited that day. Sure, there were protests & draft card burnings in the 60's & 70"s but today it seems there is so much more violence thereby making the job of law enforcement so much tougher. Who could forget Martha Reeves Dancing In The Street song? That is why she sang that song. Dance in the street as opposed to fighting & harming each other or rioting That woman deserves a star on the sidewalk. Thanks Martha & The Vandella's as well. When will she get a street named after her as Rosa Parks & MLK did? As good a mayor as Mike Duggan is, I'll just bet you if we ask him, he will probably do it. He seems to just love the city & the people. God bless you as well Mr. Duggan.

    • @wolfumz
      @wolfumz 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think there was a huge difference in the 60's. People really wanted to make things better, by protesting. Today, people want to tear things down, by protesting. Huge swathes of Americans are under the spell of weird conspiracy theories and made-up problems.
      In the 60's used to go, "I believe in this so strongly, that I'm willing to suffer for it." Civil rights leaders went to jail for their protests. Kids burning their draft cards suffered the consequences. But today, the attitude among MAGA is, "I believe in this so strongly, that I'm willing to make _you_ suffer for it." Abortion, firearms, voting rights, LGBTQ, the economy, taxes... for MAGA, the recurring theme is that _someone_ _else_ needs to suffer, to be put in their place. It's a fundamentally different mentality.
      Sometimes all we can do is hope and pray that peace will prevail.

    Notice they focused far more on the white dancers. (Even though they were crap).

      Actually the song they are dancing to isn't a Shirley Ellis song (which is brilliant) but a song by a girl group i believe the Blossoms. The show was Ready Steady Go, which was always watched by the Mod generation of the early 1960s who loved any music that came from Black America and any chance to get soul etc acts on the show was a must. They did an Otis Redding special, Motown special, Ike and Tina Turner special etc. Mods only listened to Motown, Stax etc and Ready Steady Go was the outlet for this in the early 60s. There wasnt the segregation that was common place in American TV programs. Im sure there was no intention to single them out as the show was black music orientated, Dusty Springfield who was a regular on the show hosted the Motown special and was great friends with Martha Reeves and the Vandellas she pioneered American acts such as these.
      And the dancing well they did their best so no need to be cruel and most of that generation especially the audience had come from Greater London had just come out of the Blitz and rationing. Dancing is dancing theres no good or bad.

      Right they should have focused strictly on the one black guy for the three black people who had TVs and were watching. Forget the other 60 dancers and millions of viewers. Now see how flawed your logic is? No I didn't think so.
