I so understand your complaint about the prices. It's the same for us Finns. But then, when you consider that these folk need to live on the income that they get in a few months, because there ain't nobody in for the tourism called how to survive being eaten by mosquitoes.
Tim, you are a very good "describer"!!! Of course I already knew this bc I am here in Lapland with you while in the middle of an Augusta, GA USA heat wave! I got so cold watching and listening to you that I had to put my wool shawl on😮 12:06
A few tips from a local. You can do this a little cheaper by renting an airbnb or a cheaper hotel room from the city. No need to use taxi unless you want to stay at the Santa's village very late. Public transport in Rovaniemi is not the best but during the day busses go from center to Santa's village at least once an hour and cost is about 3-5€ depending on how you pay (cash, bus app or the city bus card). The routes and timetables are online in English. The village itself is free to enter so you can enjoy the atmosphere and see Santa Claus for free if you don't want the video of your experience. Food is a bit cheaper in the city and of course there are grocery stores there. The city is full of walking routes that you can explore for free (we have the freedom to roam law so all forrests are okay to walk in) and if you have your own skies you can ski totally free as much as you want since there are at least couple of hundred kilometers of free ski routes all over the city. Free fire places are also available pretty close to the center and free ice rinks all over if you get skates from somewhere (cheap ones are about 20€ at stores). Also free play grounds for kids are everywhere, biggest is an Angry Birds play ground very close to the center where you can also slide a small hill if there is snow. Excursions are expensive everywhere. I have payed similar prises in Canary Isles and Turkey for trips to local farms, snorkeling or a tour to a local historical or natural site. But the northern lights and stars are free to watch if you go to a less lighted place on a clear night and look towards the North. For example somewhere around Ounasvaara hill area where there are walking routes and a free fire place on top (just don't walk on the ski routes, locals won't thank you for that). There is also an Arctic zoo (reindeers, moose, wolves, lynx, brown bears, polar bears etc.) in Ranua about 80km from the city and a public bus there and back costs about 30€ plus 22€ ticket for the zoo from an adult. There are couple of nice but not totally free museums in the city, a nice little church and a couple of cemeteries that look beautiful with all the candless in the dark around all saints day and Christmas eve and day. Rovaniemi is a pretty normal small city in Finland with a little twist from tourism, being a univercity city, and having the air force base that caused the flight noice, so you can do many other than chrismassy things too, like swim in the river in the summer, do many indoor sports, go to movies, pubs and night clubs etc. Reindeers can sometimes be seen loitering on the streets outside the imidiate city center, so they are not just a touristy thing eather.
True, I was in a Guest House in Rovaniemi for 70 euro, and from there with city bus 8 for 3.70 Euro. This is OK, but Finnland is very expencive, even Sweden and Germany are cheaper. These nights for €70 in Rovaniemi were booked 5 months in advance, with no cancellation option, with shared bathroom and toilet, no breakfast. In Luleå in a first-class hotel with bathroom and toilet, with breakfast, in the center of the city and near the sea, it cost me only 65 euros. In Kiruna, similar - a single room with bathroom and toilet, with breakfast included, with the option to cancel up to 3 days before arrival, cost me 60 euros. In Germany, the prices for overnight stays in hotels are similar, and overnight stays in guesthouses can be found for as little as 35 euros. Why is Finland so expencive by less salary than Sweden and Germany? Even food in Supermarkt in Rovaniemi is much expenciver than in Sweden and Germany.
Tim, I only discovered you in the last couple of weeks here and I've been having a rough time of it mentally - you've been keeping me company and I'm so grateful to witness your exploration and adventures. Whether it's with these cute pups or your beautiful family, keep doing what you're doing!
A lovely video, thank You. As far as water comes, you can drink from tap anywhere in the apartment, even in the shower if you like. There is no need for bottled water unless you want to carry it around.
There was actually a media scandal here in the early 90s. They tested the tap water here against all big brands of bottled spring water. The tap water here was found to be much better quality than any bottled brand. If I remember correctly, it was Evian that was most peeved by this news. I know a wealthy gentleman who moved here from Switzerland. He bought a nice house, but it wasn't connected to the water mains - he only had a well in the garden (with pump to takje water inside). He felt unsure about this, so he sent a sample of the water to a top Swiss research facility for testing. As soon as they received the sample, they called him to ask where he got the water from, as they have never seen such good quality water - TRUE STORY! :)
@@WalkWithMeTim Finland's tap water is among the highest quality in the world and is completely safe to drink. You can drink tap water everywhere in the country and it has been found to be significantly cleaner than bottled water. 💧 💦
When I lived in Alaska (32 miles from the Arctic Circle in Fairbanks) it was -60F. (-51C.) quite often, but once it hits -20F. It doesn't really feel any colder when it goes even lower. Lots of Northern lights too! I suspect you would like it!
I live there now and have for the past 20 years. It’s funny to see how the gift shops sell a lot of the same stuff! 😂 At least they don’t charge you to see Santa at the Santa Claus House though.

May I remind you that Lapland is twice the size of Ireland. There's plenty of other options than this particular commercialized resort filled only by foreign tourists. My tip: Inari. A small little village/town with 1,500 residents and a real taste of indigenous Sami culture. Plenty of accommodations, good restaurants, Sami cultural sites and actual people living there. Also the best place/area for spotting northern lights.
Lapland is not same as Santa's Village. Santa's village a business. Lapland is huge area with amazing nature. You can also stay in Rovaniemi for cheaper accommodation and just do day trip(s) to the Village.
@@jackwatsonepic626 The place is packed from December to February. Also July and August gets lot of visitors. Other times it's like you see in video. People visiting, but not too crowded. You can visit Santa for free. We visit with my family every year. If you want photo/video, that cost 50 euro. And that is not per person. For whole group it's 50 euro. To be honest it's not really that expensive if you don't stay in the village in December. And anyways it's a once a lifetime experience.
Thanks Tim for showing us your visit. I have always wanted to go although it's very beautiful, I'd be disappointed if I went for anymore than a day trip with the excursions included. There seems no free activities like in a resort just loads of restaurants and even charging to see Santa etc. Even the excursions seemed to be a restaurant thrown in there. I'd be thrilled to see all the lights but with a family you'd need a blank cheque.
Thanks for this video. I love watching the live cams from this part of the world and of Levi the ski resort. It’s fascinating to me being from Australia. I’ve heard before that it’s very expensive there. However, you’d probably only go there once, so what is the point of going and not doing the activities etc. might as well stay home and open the freezer door….lol. Love the husky tour you did and the northern lights. The people of Finland seem very friendly and polite. It would definitely be on my bucket list.
I had the immense good fortune last year to see, rather faintly, the Northern Lights from South Devon, U.K. This only happens very occasionally but it was incredibly beautifull. It was not huge swathes of bright colour, although some colour did show against the darkness of the sky but what I mostly saw was incredible patterns of lines, networks & moving rays of light. Quite subtle & delicate but beautiful patterns.
You can never visit Santa often enough, although the reindeer sausages were a step too far for one of my daughters. The keyholes are great. Santa was fab when we went last Oct, and spoke to my Finnish granddaughter in Finnish, although she is fluent in English, and my English grandchildren in English. We still are talking about it now. Maybe we will go again with our youngest granddaughter next year. Never caught the northern lights yet. Such a fab experience. Unfortunately Finland is a very expensive place, but fortunately our family live only 3 hours away by bus. Have promised myself a visit to huskies and reindeer next time. The coldest temp we experienced was minus 23 back in Feb, but it never feels as cold as the uk.
So far, I’ve only seen the northern lights once in my life and that was purely by accident or coincidence. I was on a plane going toward Frankfurt and the plane was flying near Greenland and everyone else was asleep it seemed but the pilot said look at the window And I’ll never forget the beautiful greenish lights shimmering as far as I could see

Thank you for sharing the beautiful Lapland ❤so expensive so it’s only a a dream.. amazing video x
Nope but I have to say I went for so many enjoyable walk in the snow .. that was free lol
Meeting Santa is free of charge and always has been. If you want a framed picture and video of the visit, these will cost.
-20oC, sounds like a nice cool summers day in Scotland
Thanks for this video. I love watching the live cams from this part of the world and of Levi the ski resort. It’s fascinating to me being from Australia. I’ve heard before that it’s very expensive there. However, you’d probably only go there once, so what is the point of going and not doing the activities etc. might as well stay home and open the freezer door….lol. Love the husky tour you did and the northern lights. The people of Finland seem very friendly and polite. It would definitely be on my bucket list.
Expensive places those tourist things. Like going to London or something. But kids gonna go bananas.
Adorable
I’ll go there in the SUMMER!
Maybe I've been in Cambridge too long but €99 for a 3 hour trip seems pretty reasonable to me! I'm going to look at booking here for 2024 I think
Simply stunning, thank you
Thanks joy
I had the immense good fortune last year to see, rather faintly, the Northern Lights from South Devon, U.K. This only happens very occasionally but it was incredibly beautifull. It was not huge swathes of bright colour, although some colour did show against the darkness of the sky but what I mostly saw was incredible patterns of lines, networks & moving rays of light. Quite subtle & delicate but beautiful patterns.
Where abouts in Devon Sarah? I'm Plymouth side. Gutted I missed that 🙂
@@Mardi-Shorts-DevonGirlUK To the East of Totnes.
My husband would flip at the chance to see all those huskies, such a gorgeous trip overall. Thanks for the video!
Thanks Jennifer
Really??
Your editing and production techniques are coming along miles - great video, fella 👌🏼
Lol thanks
So far, I’ve only seen the northern lights once in my life and that was purely by accident or coincidence. I was on a plane going toward Frankfurt and the plane was flying near Greenland and everyone else was asleep it seemed but the pilot said look at the window And I’ll never forget the beautiful greenish lights shimmering as far as I could see
Correction, the pilot said look out of the window.
