If you want the filter to fit a little bit tighter you can get some pretty thick gasket material from the hardware store and stick it to the filter so it takes up the gap on either end

You washed it out the wrong way... you should first wash it out in the reverse direction the dirt entered from.... wash from the clean side, forcing the dirt back out the dirty side.

Hope you still like the filter. Our house's system always used an e-filter for years. Eventually I thought about it, and I didn't like the airflow with it. I can literally clean our old e-filter with a pressure washer from the outlet side and inlet side. The airflow still sounds blocked and I noticed air likes to go around it. I tried a typical Merv 11 filter and it lets the system flow so much better! The air flowing into the inlet vent also sounds much quieter. It doesn't crash-land onto the vent after the blower turns off, too. Also curious about dust and allergy control. Hope it makes a difference. Our old e-filter stated it was 94% efficient. Not good for dust, especially in the desert.

I used it for some time. It worked well but when we gave away our very dirty dog the air cleared up. I am actually about to try the new filters from Trophy. They are a Merv 8 and a Merv 11.

Just a note that the higher rated paper (disposable) filters also use electrostatic effects to aid filtration. The 3M Filtrete 2200 MPR (MERV 13), for example.

Great idea about using a permanent air filter for your AC air handler. However, poor choice of filter for that much dirt. You should get a filter with a MERV rating of between 9 and 13 for a house. Trophy is rated at 8. Also, when washing, spray water from clean side to dirty side first....

I think I'd be doings a test to see how much material is passing through the new filter, ie a small piece of material on the outlet side of the filter to do a sample trap of debris, it looks like the new filter has a much bigger screen opening and has potential to let more dirt through. I would assume the new one base a size rating of somekind perhaps? I prefer the idea of re-Useable , I hate buying the same item over and over.

I love these filters. In the air conditioning industry we call them a guaranteed service call. Sure they start out clean as a whistle but every time you clean them a little more dirt(and bacteria) gets left and a little more restriction takes place making your blower work harder driving up your electric bill and causing more wear the equipment until something finally gives. There is no Merv rating on Amazon except in the answered questions which is 4-5, which makes it the same quality as a $3 30day throw away fiberglass filter. At the end of the year I would rather pay $36 for a throw away filter than $46 for electrostatic with the same filtration but possibly more issues

hey man. If you don't mind shelling out for a more heavily modified air filter setup, you could install a much larger ceiling box and put 2-3 4" depth units in parallel.

That's the grid type typically installed when the furnace is installed and it cracks and pops all day long. These are electrostatic due to air being forced, usually, through a plastic type media that creates a stated charge build up.

An electrostatic filter has two main sections. The first section consists of a series of fine wires charged to a voltage of up to 13 kV, placed alternately with earthed rods. This sets up a corona discharge, and as the airborne particles pass through the ionizing field, they receive a positive electrostatic charge. The second part is the section; this consists of a series of parallel, vertical metal plates with a potential difference of 6-7 kV between adjacent plates. The ionized dust particles are attracted towards these plates to which they adhere. The plates are sometimes coated with oil to help dust retention.

Yes, I have a complete electrostatic air filtration system installed on the intake just like in this man’s intake opening. I’m trying to determine how to remove the internal part of the filter that creates the charge to give it a good cleaning. I’ve been in the house 10 years and never had it cleaned, only removed the mesh screen and cleaned that thoroughly. Any ideas or links would be very appreciated.

I see these types of filters used a lot in aviation which are on the outside of electronic boxes. They work the best when there is a microfoam placed in the center. After watching hundreds and hundreds of these electric boxes being opened up for servicing, I can safely say that these filters are terrible and do not work as well as the manufacturer would like you to believe.
I personally think that these types of filters (Metal mesh with no foam center) is best for a low cfm (120) cfm application. Keep in mind that homes with a 3-ton unit pair up with an air handler that draws between 1050 and 1200 CFM. These filters fall flat on their face when comparing to a basic Merv 4 home filter on a 1050 CFM air handler. I understand that the initial cost of paper mediums can be expensive, but you can cut those cost by ordering in bulk. I can safely say that you may end up cleaning your air handler and ducting once a year with that medium.
Professionally cleaning the air handler and ducting is not cheap and can be delayed by using a Merv 8 or above paper filter for 5 years (Baseline average for a common four person family with a house built after 1994) and beyond with proper filter monitoring and spot cleaning with a shop vacuum.
Thanks for the video, sorry for the bad news.

Most residential furnaces/air handlers aren't built to handle filters over merv 8.
Good luck effectively cleaning all of the particulate from between the layers.
I was involved in research and development for a company founded in 1867 that built prototype commercial and residential 'healthy air' units for the American Lung Association and Healthy Air's founder, Gov. Jim Rhodes. Unfortunately his health deteriorated during the trial periods and all R&D and production stopped.
Total external static pressure readings should be taken -- especially if the installing hacks ran flex rather than sheet metal.
I have over 40 years in HVAC, most of it travelling 9 states addressing industrial and institutional systems.
