  • A series of angled rock formations to the west adjoin Boulder, Colorado. They are five numbered (north to south) Flatirons. First and Third have famous standard climbing routes; Fourth and Fifth hide elusive gems. However, the Second Flatiron puts up a convenient, playful mixed scrambling/friction ascent suitable for adept newcomers.
"Freeway" is about 600 feet, 5.0-5.2, and 6-7 pitches. Like others nearby, it is on wide slabs. There can be alterations, hence the rating/pitch ranges. At the start, head up left alongside the slabs is easiest (potentially fourth class), right is standard 5.0-5.2, and middle is most challenging (5.1-5.3).
While the climb does not summit Second and concludes by walking off to the hiking trail, there is a fun quirk two third of the way up: a small notch, where jumping is customary (but not mandatory). All over, the jugs are like siren songs luring solo chargers looking for an accommodative introduction to the Flatirons.

    My Thoughts:
I ended up doing "Freeway" three times that morning. I simply aimed for the hardest lines (as in, 5.1-5.3 territory). During my first time, I went too far right after the initial pitch, continued on the right side, and ended up missing the "jump."
The second and third (video) attempts, I successfully practiced and filmed my leaps-which I found easier to push off after lowering my body. Additionally, I was able to film a climber stepping off one side. I came across four climbers in all and no traffic jam. Like me, everyone was unroped and wearing approach shoes.
