The Invention of the Land of Israel - book launch with Shlomo Sand | Frontline Club Talks

  • This event is organised by Verso Books and Independent Jewish Voices, and is dedicated to Eric Hobsbawm.
What is a homeland and when does it become a national territory? Why have so many people been willing to die for such places throughout the twentieth century? What is the essence of the Promised Land?
Join Shlomo Sand and a panel with historian Donald Sassoon and human rights lawyer Geoffrey Bindman to discuss the mysterious sacred land that has become the site of the longest-running national struggle of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
Following the acclaimed and controversial The Invention of the Jewish People, Sand's pioneering new work The Invention of the Land of Israel deconstructs the age-old legends surrounding the Holy Land and the prejudices that continue to suffocate it.
The Invention of the Land of Israel dissects the concept of "historical right" and tracks the creation of the modern concept of the "Land of Israel" by nineteenth-century Evangelical Protestants and Jewish Zionists. This invention, he argues, not only facilitated the colonization of the Middle East and the establishment of the State of Israel; it is also threatening the existence of the Jewish state today.
    The Panel:
Professor Shlomo Sand studied history at the University of Tel Aviv and at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales, in Paris. He currently teaches contemporary history at the University of Tel Aviv. His books include The Invention of the Jewish People, On the Nation and the Jewish People.
Professor Donald Sassoon is Professor of Comparative European History at Queen Mary College, University of London. He received his PhD, supervised by Eric Hobsbawm, from Birkbeck College. His books include One Hundred Years of Socialism and The Culture of the Europeans: 1800 to the present.
Sir Geoffrey Bindman QC (Hon) founded Bindmans in 1974 and throughout his long and distinguished legal career, has specialised in civil liberty and human rights issues. He is a Visiting Professor of Law at University College London and at London South Bank University, an Honorary Fellow in Civil Legal Process at the University of Kent, and a Fellow of the Society of Advanced Legal Studies

An absorbing discussion. The expression "A land without a people and a people without a land" first used by a Christian clergyman Rev. Alexander Keith in 1843. He wrote that the Jews are "a people without a country; even as their own land, as subsequently to be shown, is in a great measure a country without a people". Later reduced to the better remembered phrase. Rev Keith, as Shlomo stated, was British.

The United States should end military aid to Israel
    1. Israel can pay for its own military. Israel has a strong economy, an excellent international credit rating, and runs frequent budget surplus. Israel ran an annual surplus of more than a billion dollars six out of the last ten years.
    2. Military aid to Israel is a security risk. Israel is a major supplier of military technology to China. These sales have been instrumental in the modernization of the Chinese military. Israel developed the Lavi fighter from American technology with 1.5 billion in American subsidies. Israel sold the Lavi fighter to China. It is now called the J-10 and is the mainstay of the Chinese Air Force. Israel has also sold China missile guidance systems,, advanced radar systems and targeting systems.
    3. Israel is a diplomatic liability.
    4. Military aid to Israel is illegal under the Leahy Law because of Israel's human rights violations. Any aid to Israel is illegal under the Symington amendment which prohibits aid to nations with nuclear weapons that have not signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and do not permit inspections of their nuclear sites

In the Bible, the lineage of the Hebrew people always came through the Father, but with the Jews, the lineage comes through the Mother. So, why do Jews say Abraham is the Father of the Jews and does not say that Sarah is the Mother of the Jews? Jewishness seems contrary to the Hebrew Biblical lineage and contrary to Scripture.

    • @shanehenderson8756
      @shanehenderson8756 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

John the jews or Juda are only one of the 12 sons of Jacob who's name was changed to Israel. Abraham was not technically a jew but he was what we call a semite a Hebrew the son of Eber. The Isralites became a nation. But eventually split into two nations . The ten tribes of Israel to the north and the three tribes of the south. One of the them being Judah. The 10 tribes of the north we know were eventually taken into captivity and disappeared from history. A few did return to Judah, but the vast majority did not return.

@@purposelyperplexed4240 Edomites, Moabite, and Ammonites were Hebrews as well but none of the three were Israelites. Only one of the 12 tribes were Jews and they are not in the land of Israel at this time. The offspring of Judah are still in the land of their captivity and living among the Gentiles in the Gentile nations. Scripture says they will be returned to the land of Israel at the return of the Messiah by the Messiah. So, according to Scripture, anyone living in the land of Israel at this time is not of the tribe of Judah, they are Jewish converts.

    • @purposelyperplexed4240
      @purposelyperplexed4240 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@johnhbaldwin9178 okay I understand your point of view because I've heard it before. I completely disagree because DNA test shows that the people living there are different and they are of Semitic DNA with that marker within them. You know the Bible gives a lot of prophecies before Messiah returns. You surely don't expect all those prophecies to take place in one day do you? Do you expect Messiah to return immediately when the "real Jews in your eyes" return to that land? The scripture ever say that when the people return to the land that Messiah will come immediately? It's called The Gap theory and sure you don't believe that Messiah comes as soon as one prophecy or two or three are completed do you? They come on the watch of the creator and not our watch. People living in that land are not converts and even if they are converts or a few are converts, does it matter because the Christian Old testament makes it very clear that once a person has converted to Judaism they are a Jew. Ruth converted and David came right through her line generations later and the Messiah came through the line of David. She was a Jew when she converted and that's the way it's always been so I don't know why you're saying that these people are not true Jews even if you're khazarian conspiracy were true. In Judaism if you convert then you are a Jew in site of the Creator. Nice try but you would have to say that Ruth and anyone else that was told in the wilderness that they would be drafted in if they converted, wouldn't be the same in the eyes of the Creator. You do realize that Josephus wrote about the current location of the Lost tribes of Israel during his lifetime? I'm not speaking about the benjamites and the Jews. Josephus said they are a multitude beyond number and they lie beyond Euphrates between the black and Caspian Sea. He and everyone at that time knew exactly where the Lost tribes or the tribes that had lost their identity were located. That was 2,000 years ago and he wrote that he knew exactly where they were and it was common knowledge people during his times. The people between the black and Caspian Sea would be modern day Ukraine kazakistan and other European areas. You know that's where the word Caucasian comes from? The mountains in that area. Don't take my word for it just go read what Josephus said about the Lost tribes of israel. He never said they were lost at all but they did lose their identity over time. Good try though. I've spoken with enough Hebrew Israelites and it was a nice try. Good luck to you

Most people in the whole world love their lands and identify with the other inhabitants unless they are Racists.
Well... that's it. Whether they want to admited or not, many of those Jews are Racists and that's why they aren't happy wherever they might be.
Too many of them believe they are so special, chosen by God to guide humanity.

Some still are. Of the Abrahamic faiths it was first yudeans, some of whom converted to Christianity of one form or another then Islam of one sort or another. The founder of the House of Saud had been 'Jewish' and converted for business reasons. That is how they are related to all other royals. In England, the y syyc sons, their angels and ju tes then their later northman cousins. Saxons, Angles, Jutes then Normans who had settled and named Normandy in France. They intermarried and interbreed and have misruled here ever since, ensuring only their own bloodlines have the power. Remember, Queen Elisabeth II boasted she could trace her lineage back to King David. Obviously that also meant Abraham. Clearly that also applies to other royal families as they are all related.
My pre-Roman ancestors were invaded by them in too larger numbers to resist. I have word of mouth family history. So have some others still here, same as Native Americans and others have knowledge of their deep history. A recent study has shown that all white traditional white British here are 50% ancient Briton. Unfortunately, most no longer have their ancient family history and are brainwashed.
One or two tribes from Europe, from around the Caucus Mountains, decided to set up a system to take over the world bit by bit. Intermarrying as well as interbreeding (legitimately or not) to infiltrate other countries. The British Empire was theirs, as were other empires. Over time they deluded their masses that they were 'chosen by God'. One can strongly suspect that most of those at the top know the truth.
So, what has been done to the Islamic, Christian and Jewish people of Palestine has been a genocide upon other semites (of European descent).
After WWIII, the new leaders selected to run is(is)ra(men)el(ohim) changed their European names to what they believed sounded more 'Jewish'.
I believe it goes back to ancient Sumaria after the last ice age, and to Europe before that.

And what about non-Jewish members of the Knesset, Arab Palestinians who are citizens of the modern State of Israel, as are thousands of non-Jewish Israeli citizens who cast their votes in elections, etc? The retired legionnaires were always sent to far or remote places with whole familia to be safer from the revenge coming.
The perception of the families headed to villa (which may not be too glorious) is sad, trails of tears and words of misery.
This is the Jewish history, the word itself means “used” as “levee”. This is the ancient agreement made for them as helots of the khasas empire.
Which is “Hasmonean” the /k/ initial causes lenition to /Kh/ and it is truly “Asmon”.
They are always blamed for everything by Rome and still are chained to the Vatican. But through Sweden which is Sudan which is ancient judan except that initial /j/ gets turned up into that shepherd staff letter we don’t use anyone. Truth is that the Jesuit priests created the modern sense of Israel and even the bulk of its script in the 19th century. An ever evolving script, many times one might flip a modern Hebrew word upside-down and notice you can make out Latin and English words in the turned script.
Like “Likud” in Hebrew script turned up reads “US-OIL” no joke.
Probably have to question standard oil and it’s misty actions in the Middle East during 19th century to make sense of it. Did I say misty? I should have said greasy or snake-oily I guess but that would be rude.
Jews are the helots to the spartan , and are leveed from the society as troops working for the Vatican in a sense easier to connect with words than paper trail these days. Though you can follow the slavery markets to make those connections but this is an unfair connection to assume of the populace to carry the burden of the elites intrigue.
Jews are lovely like my mother and powerful like my father. But so is the traits of all the other “words” that make up that fine pair.
With so many peoples around the world having zero sense of rooted history most prior to 17th century even, I would question the ones who can tell you in every detail thousands of years of tradition at the tips of their tongues. Either that culture is the one who burned everyone else’s books, or they burned everyone else.
I think what “Rome” did was to absorb not only the peoples that they crushed, but their stories as well. Thusly the Romance of Rome IS the Jewish story and the Arabs story and the Samoans story and the Cherokee/Cherusci story… etc
It is our story and it’s both dirty and beautiful.
Now to cover the enmity game that keeps the 3 main branches of “Jew” killing each other in rotation.
    But for another time.
Have you ever applied lenition rules to Basque/Algonquin pidgin on Hebrew words?
All words if old enough to have been exiled from “Egypt” will naturally have had an initial consonant. So.. I presume the version of Israel that came out of Egypt is the “Mizraim” making a good candidate for their initial letter to be an M.
Well.. in the maritime-merchantcraft basque/Algonquin pidgin (which for my money is Phoenician 2.0) the letter M initially flips with the letter B in Latin/English and this makes the oldest version of the word Israel “Byzrael” and reversing Lenition by replacing the /el/ between the /ae/ we get “Byzrala” which Rala is “to groan or grumble” and “Byz” gives that sense of bees buzzing whether in business always busy or the whirring of scythes on fields of wheat or the buzz of oarsmen rowing and complaining.
Think of what Moses greatest complaint was, misusing his gold and complaining. Lol I think that covers my personality to a T lol
Now since “byzantine” is an obvious comparison here, you’d say but the buzzanteans expelled the “Jews” so they can’t be Jewish…
But which “kind of Jews” weren’t they?
I’d ask the same question of the Spanish and English expulsions as well. Only in David’s time had the whole of Israel been United and only by his Morning star. The rest of history is about the tribes enmity game against each other.
Revenge back and forth because it’s good business and it creates broken and desperate people of your neighbor to the point where they choose to put the chains on themselves and work for the master at a fraction of their worth.
That, in a nutshell is the purpose of the vaticans military industrial complex that has always belonged to Rome and always done exactly the same thing through all of recorded time. So easy to trace because they burned all other records to the point where you can only trace their guilt.
It’s like a serial killer that thought they were covering their tracks by leaving nothing but their own fingerprints all over the murder scene of time immemorial.
Use nothing I have said for hateful purpose and love your neighbor as yourself, then this word will be a blessing to your life.
Thank you for reading this world is a lonely place for the ancient of heart. - mess, I am

They are a meme trying to turn into a gene, the opposite of the normal course of a people emerging as a unity and developing a culture, traditions, ideals.
The first Jews were parts of the lowliest segments of a civilization in Mesopotamia, which developed an idea that would overturn their meekness, their inferiority, and turn it into a superiority.

Jewish identity is founded no being the chosen to suffer....they turned being a slave into being a master, and being a victim into a oppressive passive-aggressive force. The rest is them adopting ancient Egyptian spirituality and Zoroastrianism, and integrating it into their reversal of hierarchies where weak becomes strong, and humility becomes pride...and so on = Nihilism in a nutshell

Because if Jordan was also part of the area that the Colonizing British promised for the Jews, I'm pretty sure the Zionists - whether they are Jews or American hard-core amrageddon evangelical ones like yourself - would also spread the lie that they "never existed".
Palestinians, or whatever the fuck you call them, lived long enough in Palestine (around 1860 years, which is a shit ton of years) to be considered the indigenous population of the land, and if that isn't enough, then I don't know what is, and they have every right to fight back for their stolen land.

There is nothing more disgusting and dangerous than prople using history and mitology as an excuse of actions on the present that, if anybody else did it, they would be justly repudated. I see this all the time being done by "minorities": people defending the nazi-like behavior or israel, the racial discrimination whites suffer in south africa, the way men keep loosing fundamental rigthts because of feminists who think preferential treatment for them is equality. And much more. Now even some LGBT discriminate people who are not like them. This weaponization of victim status must stop.

Whites in South Africa are not experiencing racial discrimination, don’t tell lies. They are still very much in charge, and have never changed. The only difference is that there are laws now and consequences for racism. Here’s the truth: equality feels like discrimination to those who do not like equality with fellow humans that do not look like them.
If anything, white people are the ones weaponising, or trying to weaponise their political minority status and weaponise it. It is not working though in the main. Not having your way in all things is what would make you feel like you are being discriminated against.

You have a room full of people who are European who call themselves Jews or Jewish. They are hearing one of their own say they and a land called Israel is an invention. Shlomo Sand approaches this topic via politics and religion, then shockingly goes into nationality. This is how he defines this invention. He knows that his people are Caucasian Europeans who aren't any different from any other Caucasians living in Europe. Europeans just speak different languages like French, English, Spanish, German, etc., but are biologically the same people. How are a select people in Europe calling themselves Jews and other Europeans are not, when you are all the same people biologically. This does not make any sense. Today the Torah is available for all of Europe but all of Europe is still not saying they are the Jews of antiquity. By his own words Schlomo (19:00) says he's trying to find ONE BOOK on the exile of his people 2000 years ago from Judea. They tell him it's not us. You hear people in the audience laugh. The scholars in the University of Tel Aviv know their people who are calling themselves Jews are not. People who is of European ancestry and calling themselves Jews or Jewish should analyze the story of Moses and Pharoah. This story takes place on the continent of Africa. Where Caucasians in Africa 3000 years ago as slaves? Of course not. Schlomo is basically saying this invention is now on a political and religious foundation. How do you call yourself a people who you are not and maintain it for so long. How does one live this lie?

The question of biology is irrelevant. It is imprecise and there is so much mixture it renders it useless for these purposes. It was anti-semites who invented the Jews as a race. But that is not to say that the Jews of Europe weren’t Jewish. They were absolutely Jewish because they practiced the religion of Judaism. Just like any modern day practicing Jew is in every sense a Jew. There are not now nor were there ever “biological” Jews. It is a made up concept used to make a group the scapegoats for problems in Europe. Just like there’s no such thing as a biological Christian or Muslim. People are born into these traditions and many leave and many stay. Once a person leaves a religion, they are no longer a part of it, regardless of what anyone says. That’s what Professor Sand means by there being no secular Jewish culture. Just like there is no secular Christian culture; both are a contradiction in terms.

Judaeism is a RELIGION not an Ethnicity, but the ZIONAZTIES try to mix everything up to confuse misdirect and deceive everyone...Ashkenasim Jews from Europe were converts from Khazaria (Ukraine/Poland/Hungary) in 8thC AD by their King Bulan. As a religion they are Jewish. Ethnicity they are European.

Shlomo Sand appears to be the most prominent Jewish intellectual in Israel; to the extent that throughout his public life he adhered to the ethics of his profession as a reliable and credible historian. His implacable rigor with which he exercises his profession and his astonishing courage to defend the truth give him an unrivaled aura throughout the world. For this, he is highly respected in circles of Arab intellectuals. For example, he was not afraid to publicly reveal that he had searched every library in the West to find a single history book discussing the forced expulsion of Jews from Palestine two thousand years ago; alas he found nothing of the sort. Therefore, such a hunt for Jews never took place, but it is purely a lie of Zionist propaganda to deceive world opinion. During a televised tête-à-tête with Mayer Habib a few years ago, Shlomo Sand ridiculed his opponent by accusing him of his dual nationality, saying "you want two states; a state where you work and a state for your well-deserved vacation..." Bravo Shlomo Sand for your clarity of mind and hats off to your activism with a human and humanist face

Yes. The white Romans expelled the black Jews from Rome.
References to an expulsion of Jews from Rome by the Roman emperor Claudius, who was in office AD 41-54, appear in the Acts of the Apostles (18:2), and in the writings of Roman historians Suetonius (c. AD 69 - c. AD 122), Cassius Dio (c. AD 150 - c. 235) and fifth-century Christian author Paulus Orosius. Scholars generally agree that these references refer to the same incident.[1][2]

49:15 "I don't want Britain [to] define itself as the state only of the Englishman." Is Sholmo rooting for the Scots, Welsh & Ulster Irish? Or was this an oblique reference to us Brits who are a composite lot of Tommies, skirt-wearing Scotch (mine's a pint of Laophraig, squire), rugby-crazy Taffies and boozy Ulster fry Micks? Was he or was he not also pitching a hurrah for those Brits who are the descendants of the denizen-chickens who came "home" to roost from the Empire beyond? I think we should be told.

The concept of race needs to be understood and defined. It has yet to be but likely will never be in the scheme of things. Ethnicity/ethnicities are less nebulous. DNA is a game changer. Jews are Jews, more or less. More because they are in the diaspora and Israel's modern state. The other side of the equation, which dares not speak its name, cannot be ignored, for they are here and now. Likewise, the Jews, more or less, must be accommodated in the future of the Levant. Israel's Menachim Begin and Egypt's Anwar Sadat accomplished the unthinkable. In that case, there's hope that two great men of their times will emerge from the miasma to accomplish the unthinkable.

  • @houseonthehill8485

Difference seems to be in how people define Jew during various periods of time throughout history.
However, it appears that none of the definitions account for how GOD has DEMONSTRATED the identity of the seed of Abraham.
Reading the Bible and following the line of descendants and their wives and the lands of their origins you begin to SEE and EXPERIENCE the wonderful tapestry of faithful believers from all the NATIONS of His creation.
Moreover, reading the words of Moses as he speaks with the MIXED MULTITUDE before the go over with Joshua, Moses clearly states the inheritance is the EARTH.
    EXODUS 19:4-6
The EARTH is the Lords and the fullness of it. We are heirs to the KINGDOM and that is the New Earth.

    • @angr3819
      @angr3819 ปีที่แล้ว

Well you have to believe the various books of the compendium of books called the bible are accurate deep history to believe that. Maybe you can read about how many times books were taken out, others put in, there were mistranslations, twistings of truth as well as outright lies for reasons of power. Think a this. Almost all writings of almost any re-legions allow for leaders to call for war or peace.
Also look into etymology. The word amen came from the ancient Egyptian pharoah god Amun (Hyksos proto Jews). DNA of ancient mummies has shown they were white Caucasians, Hyksos or not. The word bless from the word "blood" in old German. God from the old German "guden".
There is a lot in etymology. Also in the phonetics of the English language who has been developed to mislead (read the book by Pao Chang "word magic". Not about candles and cloaks but about the way English words are used to trick us).
