If you read the Iliad, Homer says that the reason the war took ten years is because the Greeks didn't have the numbers to fully encircle Troy. I love the perspective you give at the end. It’s a feeling I often have when I watch these great battles. That each and every soldier and non combatant needs to be viewed at the individual level. Each one has a name and a loving mother who held and nursed them. Each loved and wanted and dreamed and imagined. Each felt pain, hunger, thirst and so on. However in all these great wars and battles we simply lump them all into mass numbers. I’m glad I’m not the only one who imagines these battles at the human level instead of just a game of checkers. I never realized just how long this siege lasted and especially how hard the Jews fought defending their City. I always try and put myself into the story and imagine the physical conditions of what the people were experiencing, and this visual telling made it much easier for me to do just that. And after this experience, I know I understand better how it must have been for both the Romans as well the Jewish people. The word horror just doesn't begin to describe it. Thank you.
In the end war is always an act of greed, control and, power. In that order. There is no counting or measure in the lusts of people and the the result is just death. Lives gone for nothing more than a few who obtain some wealth or glory. For these reasons war is always evil. I still have one question that no one seems to know the answer to: what happened to Procurator Flores, the villain who started this whole thing?
Long before the siege he was forced out of the city by a mass civilian uprising due to his raiding of the sacred Jewish gold in the temple storehouses. According to history there were olive groves (very dense and strong wood), fig trees, fruit trees and pine trees aplenty. It wasn't the desert that it was turned into by the Romans and because of the deforestation, check that, defoliation it stayed a desert.

Was the Temple totally leveled like the NT allegedly predicted, or is the Western or Wailing Wall the actual remnant of the Temple you reckon? I have a Christian friend who is adamant that 'not one stone will stand upon another' and no trace of Temple remains, yet the Jewish people assure me that the Wall is the real deal.. Guess it depends on the personal bias is my conclusion

The wall was originally erected as part of the expansion of the Second Jewish Temple by Herod the Great, which resulted in the encasement of the natural, steep hill known to Jews and Christians as the Temple Mount, in a large rectangular structure topped by a huge flat platform, thus creating more space for the Temple itself and its auxiliary buildings.

It's genuinely impressive how hard the Jews fought considering they really had no organization and hamstrung themselves a few times. I couldn't imagine what they were thinking and feeling as it was all going down, especially when the Romans breached into the heart of the city. Must have felt like the end for them.

Thank you for this amazing production. I teach kinds and teens ancient history, and was looking for something to show the importance of this moment to our people, as opposed to the usual "the Romans burned town our Temple and exiled the people" that we get. The narration was crisp and clear, and the research well-sourced and cited. For someone who wanted an overview of the fighting, you perfectly fed my need to understand the details of the siege without droning on about unnecessary details. Though this hasn't received as many views as your other videos, you deserve to feel proud in your heart that this was one of your best works. I remember reading the part in Josephus where the rival factions of Simon bar Gioras and John of Gischala were burning each other’s food stores, I was so frustrated by that move. I thought “Those fools! They just doomed each other and the people of Jerusalem to a famine.” At that point, the Romans would win no matter what, because they could easily obtain food from outside for their forces, while the Judaean forces under Simon and John were completely cut off.
The Arch of Titus still stands in Rome commemorating the fall of Jerusalem with the carving under the arch which shows the captives and Roman soldiers parading into Rome with the menorah from the Temple Mount and other items plundered during the siege. The arch is proof that the siege took place as the Emperor had carved what he witnessed as his older brother entered Rome in 71 AD.
For centuries, on command from religious leaders, it was forbidden for Jews to walk under the arch of Titus. That’s how impactful that structure was and still is.

Augustus only tax the area since Herod went to Mark Antony himself and asked him to Help Herod take the throne which is why the Romans were in the area in the first place. When Augustus defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra, he went to King Herod and asked him bout his loyalty. Herod still swore allegiance to Dead Mark Antony which somehow lead to Augustus keeping the moron alive and as a result he taxed Judea.
I don't think I ever seen such an amazing graphic portrayal of any siege in history like this. You took an incredibly complex battle and made it simple to understand. I consider myself to be a student of history but, your documentary help me put together, in my mind, an event that I had aways been curious about but unfortunately, never had the time to study. A very sensitive, sensible, poignant and absorbing rendition of a calamity but also a superb tale of unrivaled courage of a people fighting for their religion, honor and self-belief. The last line is a great take-away: it is time for mankind to reflect on all these past and present horrors and shy away from inflicting unwanted and even counter-productive pain and suffering on others. "unrivaled courage", "honor", ... - Courage requires choice and adversity. Many if not most participants of that battle had the choice to fight and die or don't and die. Is it honorable when Hamas today slaughters civilians or when Israel bombs other civilians, fighting for their religion, honor and self-belief? They have better choices today than our predecessors at the time. These are just hollow words. When the negotiations before the final slaughter fell apart, was Simon honorable because he stood his ground in the face of defeat? The direct consequence was the slaughter of the poor in the lower city. Simon survived, apparently he did not fight to his own death, only to the death of his subordinates, even though he must have known what happens to enemy leaders in roman parades. Maybe there would still be a temple in Jerusalem, if negotiations had been conducted earlier and differently. Maybe the question of a Jewish and/or Palestinian state would never have to be asked if people would think less in terms of courage and honor and more in terms of compassion and lifes. For my taste, we keep focusing too much on heroism and not enough on compassion.

@@SELAHPAUSE the Messiah returns at the end of tribulation, the events of 70 ad are not the same as those summarised and outlined in Matthew 24, rather they are what occur in the interlude before those times. Daniel 9:26 speaks to what happens in 70 a.d, Daniel 9:27 is what happens during the tribulation as also further described in Matthew 24
@@Aenthel your's is but the futuristic Schofield, Lindsay eschatology. Jesus came in the Glory of the Father as of old as He stirred the over 12 legions He said we're at His command to avenge the blood of the Martyrs . He had already made reference to this before His crucifixion.
The closing statement really made me appreciate why I marvel at the ancient times, the savagery, beauty and realness of these times is awe-inspiring and terrifying in equal measure.
Titus really seems like one of the gutsiest Roman commanders I've heard about. Every time the siege is about to break down, "however, Titus led his cavalry in a counterassault, and drove the defenders back". Bloody impressive defensive efforts which would likely have demoralized any other army into capitulation.
He is definitely a rather impressive commander who was not afraid to put his life on the line. Really cool that both he and his father campaigned together as well
One thing to take into consideration however, was that most of our sources concerning this come from Josephus, who was officially patronized by the Flavius family. Josephus claims to have been captured, but he could have been a traitor. Bellum Idaeicum was written years later probably with his patrons in mind.

Amazing explanation of how this siege happened. Jesus fore told the falling of Jerusalem and the destruction of the temple and the ruins can be seen today. Thank you for your hard work in putting this together. It gives a humbling view of how life was so hard and brutal during these times.
This was the Second Coming of Jesus Christ since the new covenant can not be established until the old temple is destroyed annulling the Old Testament covenant as well and establishing the new temple and new covenant of Christ in the form of the Holy Spirit and our bodies as the new temple where God now dwells in for those who believe. This was an extraordinary video. I was particularly impressed by your closing remarks. I appreciate you keeping some focus on the humanity of the people involved. It's too easy for people to see events like this as just a thrilling story for entertainment, or to reduce the people involved to numbers. But every one of them, Roman and Jewish, was an individual human being not so different from ourselves. What you said about how each of these people was once a baby and a child, I've had similar thoughts before when thinking of historical events. I think I started having such thoughts after watching a 1970s movie, "The Conversation". In one scene, a woman notices a homeless man sleeping on a bench and she says "he was once somebody's baby boy". Somehow that line made a distinct impression on me and it sometimes occurs to me again when I think about events like this. That all those people who killed and died in Jerusalem, every single one, was once a baby and a child who laughed, cried, played, lived life, most of them had families, friends, lovers, none of them were fundamentally very different from any of us, and somehow they all took thousands of different roads through life which all converged at Jerusalem where they either killed or died, or both, in such a horrific way. Somehow it's a sobering thought. I thought I was the only one who ever thought that way, I've never seen anyone else (except the woman in the movie) say anything like it until this video. I'm not sure I even really know what it means or what the significance of it is. But for some reason I just think it's important to remember that they were all human beings.

I didn't realize just how hard-fought this siege was. I'm especially impressed by just how bravely and stubbornly the Jewish defenders fought. They were cunning, resourceful, and never gave an inch of ground that wasn't wrenched from them by the sword. Even for people who faced nearly certain death or slavery in the event of defeat, their tenacity against professional Roman soldiers was astounding.
Well brave. But who burns their own food before a siege? Or kills their own people in a siege? Or would rather be cannibals before eating oxen and sheep? Or destroy weapons and not help their neighbors against the invader just because of a petty grudge?

Jesus fulfilled 44 prophecies about the coming Messiah. Not only for the Jews but also for the whole world. And it is fitting that His prophetic prophecy about Jerusalem was fulfilled. Not only this but the destruction of the temple and the city itself. The KJV transaction of Luke 21:20-24 will give us another angle to view Jesus's prophecy. Luke 21 is speaking to the time of tribulation, a series of events which are yet to begin, the same outline of events is found in Matthew 24 where Jesus refers to Daniel's prophecy (Daniel 9:27), however what happened in 70 a.d. was not Daniel's 70th week but rather what is said to happen before those times (Daniel 9:26), the events of tribulation are yet to begin, what took place in the first century followed a completely different sequence from what is said to happen when Jerusalem is invaded and overrun midway into tribulation

Matthew 24:1-2 "And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down." That's kind of hard to say that Jesus is talking about the tribulation when there are multiple scriptures of the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem. But you know I could be wrong. Super impressed by this video. I am so proud to be a member of the Jewish nation living in Israel. To this day we fast every year on the day our Holy Temple fell and have certain ways we live by for the three weeks before.. we certainly didn't give up. This was cool. I had heard of this siege mentioned quite a bit in other things and lists of sieges etc but didn't actually knew what actually happened. This was a interesting vid. Just found this channel and this kinda ancient battle stuff is great.
Been studying Matthew 24 and this video has brought alive of what I have been reading. Did you know that many disciples went to Pella way before situation got really bad? Jesus told his audience to escape to the mountains when they saw Jerusalem being surrounded by Roman soldiers. These disciples were watching the signs given by the Master and escaped to the place of safety.

Many old roman settlements-turn-cities such as London, Paris, and many others didn't have access to clean water after the Romans left because they didn't have an understanding of aqueducts. After the Romans left London, it took until the 1800s for the British to get their citizens as good of access to clean water as was enjoyed in Roman times. The Romans were especially unique because of their overarching desire to subjugate people and pass on their culture, not slaughter their enemies. (Of course they slaughtered the ones that gave them trouble, but it wasn't their end goal)

If you read the Iliad, Homer says that the reason the war took ten years is because the Greeks didn't have the numbers to fully encircle Troy. I love the perspective you give at the end. It’s a feeling I often have when I watch these great battles. That each and every soldier and non combatant needs to be viewed at the individual level. Each one has a name and a loving mother who held and nursed them. Each loved and wanted and dreamed and imagined. Each felt pain, hunger, thirst and so on. However in all these great wars and battles we simply lump them all into mass numbers. I’m glad I’m not the only one who imagines these battles at the human level instead of just a game of checkers.

I never realized just how long this siege lasted and especially how hard the Jews fought defending their City. I always try and put myself into the story and imagine the physical conditions of what the people were experiencing, and this visual telling made it much easier for me to do just that. And after this experience, I know I understand better how it must have been for both the Romans as well the Jewish people. The word horror just doesn't begin to describe it.

In the end war is always an act of greed, control and, power. In that order. There is no counting or measure in the lusts of people and the the result is just death. I still have one question that no one seems to know the answer to: what happened to Procurator Flores, the villain who started this whole thing?

According to history there were olive groves (very dense and strong wood), fig trees, fruit trees and pine trees aplenty. It wasn't the desert that it was turned into by the Romans and because of the deforestation, check that, defoliation it stayed a desert.

I've studied roman history and christian theology for years... This documentary is the ultimate wish fulfilment for me! I knew many of these details but held them mostly in fragments devoid of context. Now I have excellent context that brings everything together.
Was the Temple totally leveled like the NT allegedly predicted, or is the Western or Wailing Wall the actual remnant of the Temple you reckon? I have a Christian friend who is adamant that 'not one stone will stand upon another' and no trace of Temple remains, yet the Jewish people assure me that the Wall is the real deal.. The wall was originally erected as part of the expansion of the Second Jewish Temple by Herod the Great, which resulted in the encasement of the natural, steep hill known to Jews and Christians as the Temple Mount, in a large rectangular structure topped by a huge flat platform, thus creating more space for the Temple itself and its auxiliary buildings.

It's genuinely impressive how hard the Jews fought considering they really had no organization and hamstrung themselves a few times. I couldn't imagine what they were thinking and feeling as it was all going down, especially when the Romans breached into the heart of the city. Must have felt like the end for them.

There are many reasons why it took a long time for the disciples to finish their books, and one of them was because of persecution. Josephus said that many pilgrims had come to the city for ceremonial reasons, so the population was larger than normal during the seige.
The population usually doubled, bringing it to 300 to 400 thousand. Amazing they could feed that many people during a siege of that duration.

For someone who wanted an overview of the fighting, you perfectly fed my need to understand the details of the siege without droning on about unnecessary details. I remember reading the part in Josephus where the rival factions of Simon bar Gioras and John of Gischala were burning each other’s food stores, I was so frustrated by that move. I thought “Those fools! They just doomed each other and the people of Jerusalem to a famine.” At that point, the Romans would win no matter what, because they could easily obtain food from outside for their forces, while the Judaean forces under Simon and John were completely cut off.
The Arch of Titus still stands in Rome commemorating the fall of Jerusalem with the carving under the arch which shows the captives and Roman soldiers parading into Rome with the menorah from the Temple Mount and other items plundered during the siege. The arch is proof that the siege took place as the Emperor had carved what he witnessed as his older brother entered Rome in 71 AD.
For centuries, on command from religious leaders, it was forbidden for Jews to walk under the arch of Titus. That’s how impactful that structure was and still is.

Augustus only tax the area since Herod went to Mark Antony himself and asked him to Help Herod take the throne which is why the Romans were in the area in the first place. "unrivaled courage", "honor", ... - Courage requires choice and adversity. Many if not most participants of that battle had the choice to fight and die or don't and die. Is it honorable when Hamas today slaughters civilians or when Israel bombs other civilians, fighting for their religion, honor and self-belief? They have better choices today than our predecessors at the time.
These are just hollow words. When the negotiations before the final slaughter fell apart, was Simon honorable because he stood his ground in the face of defeat? The direct consequence was the slaughter of the poor in the lower city. Simon survived, apparently he did not fight to his own death, only to the death of his subordinates, even though he must have known what happens to enemy leaders in roman parades.
Maybe there would still be a temple in Jerusalem, if negotiations had been conducted earlier and differently. Maybe the question of a Jewish and/or Palestinian state would never have to be asked if people would think less in terms of courage and honor and more in terms of compassion and lifes.

Titus really seems like one of the gutsiest Roman commanders I've heard about. Every time the siege is about to break down, "however, Titus led his cavalry in a counterassault, and drove the defenders back".

One thing to take into consideration however, was that most of our sources concerning this come from Josephus, who was officially patronized by the Flavius family. This was an extraordinary video. I was particularly impressed by your closing remarks. I appreciate you keeping some focus on the humanity of the people involved. It's too easy for people to see events like this as just a thrilling story for entertainment, or to reduce the people involved to numbers. But every one of them, Roman and Jewish, was an individual human being not so different from ourselves. What you said about how each of these people was once a baby and a child, I've had similar thoughts before when thinking of historical events. I think I started having such thoughts after watching a 1970s movie, "The Conversation". In one scene, a woman notices a homeless man sleeping on a bench and she says "he was once somebody's baby boy". Somehow that line made a distinct impression on me and it sometimes occurs to me again when I think about events like this. That all those people who killed and died in Jerusalem, every single one, was once a baby and a child who laughed, cried, played, lived life, most of them had families, friends, lovers, none of them were fundamentally very different from any of us, and somehow they all took thousands of different roads through life which all converged at Jerusalem where they either killed or died, or both, in such a horrific way. Somehow it's a sobering thought. I thought I was the only one who ever thought that way, I've never seen anyone else (except the woman in the movie) say anything like it until this video. I'm not sure I even really know what it means or what the significance of it is. But for some reason I just think it's important to remember that they were all human beings.

I didn't except I'd sit here and watch the whole thing through. This was better than anything I've seen on Netflix lately. Though I'm not sure how much that's worth these days. Great documentary!
I didn't realize just how hard-fought this siege was. I'm especially impressed by just how bravely and stubbornly the Jewish defenders fought. They were cunning, resourceful, and never gave an inch of ground that wasn't wrenched from them by the sword. Even for people who faced nearly certain death or slavery in the event of defeat, their tenacity against professional Roman soldiers was astounding.
Well brave. But who burns their own food before a siege? Or kills their own people in a siege? Or would rather be cannibals before eating oxen and sheep? Or destroy weapons and not help their neighbors against the invader just because of a petty grudge?
Brave and tenacious. But really really lacking in strategy, leadership and unity.

What a dreadful terrifying prophecy. Could you imagine what psychological damage Jesus's prophecy had on the Jew's living during the siege of Jerusalem? The see before their very eyes Jerusalem being torn down and the temple of God being burnt with fire. Luke 21 is speaking to the time of tribulation, a series of events which are yet to begin, the same outline of events is found in Matthew 24 where Jesus refers to Daniel's prophecy (Daniel 9:27), however what happened in 70 a.d. was not Daniel's 70th week but rather what is said to happen before those times (Daniel 9:26), the events of tribulation are yet to begin, what took place in the first century followed a completely different sequence from what is said to happen when Jerusalem is invaded and overrun midway into tribulation

That's kind of hard to say that Jesus is talking about the tribulation when there are multiple scriptures of the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem. But you know I could be wrong. This was cool. I had heard of this siege mentioned quite a bit in other things and lists of sieges etc but didn't actually knew what actually happened. This was a interesting vid. Just found this channel and this kinda ancient battle stuff is great.
Been studying Matthew 24 and this video has brought alive of what I have been reading. Did you know that many disciples went to Pella way before situation got really bad? Jesus told his audience to escape to the mountains when they saw Jerusalem being surrounded by Roman soldiers. These disciples were watching the signs given by the Master and escaped to the place of safety.
Matthew 24 is speaking about the time of tribulation.
This siege was in essence Jesus second coming in judgment against the unbelieving jews

We are incedibly lucky to have all the records of the battles we do from antiquity. We know more about what happened 2100 years ago then we do for all the dark ages. After the fall of Rome mankind stopped forwarding civilization really until Gunpowder/Steam Engine came about.

Many old roman settlements-turn-cities such as London, Paris, and many others didn't have access to clean water after the Romans left because they didn't have an understanding of aqueducts. After the Romans left London, it took until the 1800s for the British to get their citizens as good of access to clean water as was enjoyed in Roman times. The Romans were especially unique because of their overarching desire to subjugate people and pass on their culture, not slaughter their enemies. (Of course they slaughtered the ones that gave them trouble, but it wasn't their end goal)

Of course the Jews fell to the Babylonians, the Greeks and the Romans.
