  • When I wrote LONG HAIRED HIPPIE BOY, it was one of my most popular opening act songs. Ronnie Van Zant needed original songs in 1968 and quickly learned the lyrics and took it over for his band. I continued to play the harmonica on it and sing chorus on it with One Percent which became the Lynyrd Skynyrd band. It was a very popular song in Florida and Georgia. We played it at festivals and concerts. Also, I've played it with The Allman Brothers Band, 38 Special and Mollie Hatchet.

Steve, great show. Please tell us about the song Curtis Lowe, that was one of my favored songs of all times.

I remember Lacy taking me, Ronnie and Gary to Rexall Drug Store to hear a shoe shine man play a dobro in the 60s. We were still young. It was in Avondale between Lakeshore and Riverside. I believe Gene Odom knows more than I do about who Ronnie had in mind in this song. That is the only experience I had.

      @ steve
Do you remember a blind Black man who used to sit and play an old worn out box top guitar in front of Pic N Save on Normandy Blvd / He always had his old bulldog with him and he played for tips. I somehow thought that this man may have had some inspiration for Curtis Lowe since he was a neighborhood staple.

You might as well tell people that Elvis Presley is your half-brother, it would be just about as truthful as saying that you recorded this yourself in the front row,
