Simple Man Lynyrd Skynyrd LOST ORIGINAL GUITAR PART Steve Vest Sideman

  • I wrote this guitar part after Ronnie and Gary had written Simple Man with their parts. We first played it together at The Naked Pear. My part fell right into place as we were performing. As a sideman, I played it with them all over Northeast FL and SE GA in 1970 and 1971 prior to Billy Powell and Ed King joining the band.

what i love about vest's music is the authenticity. i can tell that he really enjoys what he's doing. and the slightly off-tune, "homegrown fingerpicking" guitar work, and raggedy vocals adds to that vibe. steve's harmonica work is actually really good too. just a good ol boy down in the swamp spreading peace, love, and music. god bless ya steve vest

My school had a talent contest in 1985, and my band won it playing simple man. I had a crappy amp and no money at the time, so a guy at the local bar was able to lend me a marshall jcm 800 amp for the show. They liked the song so much they asked us to play 2 more. I don't remember what the other 2 songs were. That shows you the power of the song "Simple Man". I remembered that one.

Seems like a nice ol dude,I would say buy a clip on tuner but I bet those strings are 20 yrs old, that's the best tuning he can get! It he seems unwilling to move on from his 2 mins of fame by association! They sure didn't help his poverty any. He feels like part of the boys that abandoned him. That's all he has...his memories. Kinda Sad
