GREAT VIDEO! You show off how much this bike rips! I am seriously considering this bike more and more.. My buddy in high school had a brand new 1997 KLX250r (in 1998 Kawi made it a 300cc) and this is pretty much the same bike. At the time it was the most advanced japanese 4-stroke you could buy (until Yamaha came out with the yzf400 motocrosser.) I loved every chance I had to ride it. This is a last of it's kind- the old school, hard core trail bike. R.I.P Honda XR400, Suzuki DR350R..

Just installed a Power Commander V on the bike. Some things I wish I'd known before starting: 1.) The locking tabs on the connector are fragile. I tried to avoid snapping them off --- and failed. I don't think it's a major problem. The connector from the Power Commander V plugs in very securely even with the locking tabs missing. I wrapped some electrical tape around the connector for insurance, but I don't think it'll really be needed. If anyone has been able to take the connector apart without damaging the little locking tabs, an explanation would be helpful --- but too late for me :( 2.) Best way to get the connector apart was to slip the end of a small flat tip screwdriver in the narrow gap between the ends of the connector and twist gently. Did this at several points until the connectors started moving apart. 3.) Instructions say to remove the seat. This leaves VERY little room to work with to separate the connector, manipulate wire-harnesses, find a spot for the Power Commander, etc. Removing the white side-plastics in addition to the seat made the whole process MUCH easier. I was able to place the original ECM back in its original bracket and find room to mount the Power Commander. 4.) It's in the instructions, but also worth emphasizing: make sure the main switch (the little orange button) is OFF before starting the installation. Aside from the Power Commander, the bike is stock. After installing the Power Commander, the bike started on the first try. I must admit, this was a relief. Bike mods are like medicine --- first, do no harm. Haven't had it off road yet, but based on a couple short rides in my neighborhood, the throttle response is much improved. Also, the bike used to emit a popping noise when I chopped the throttle. That's completely gone now. It seems like it has more power, but won't know for sure until I get to a trail. So far, it seems like a very worthwhile mod. Will follow up when I know more.
When I installed the pc 5 I lifted the original computer chip off of its mounts so all I had to do was press the button on the clip with my index finger and pull the computer off.. no breakage.
Definitely considering a KLX 300 R. All the other trail bikes on the market come with forks that I know will be unsatisfactory for me (bodybuilder around 220lbs). I have a track bike already, but I want a trail bike that will work for both myself and for any friends I bring along. Very helpful to hear about this upgrade!!!
Just a Power Commander V --- haven't even received it yet. Did you ever try running the stock exhaust with the Power Commander V? Wondering whether there is any significant difference between the stock and Pro Circuit exhausts when the Power Commander V is installed. Given that the only available tune from Dyno Jet is for the stock exhaust, I'm tempted to wait until they make more tunes available and pick an exhaust when I know I can get a Dyno Jet tune for it. Your thoughts?

@@jasonwagner5002 ya. I dont think anyone anticipated how many people would buy the klx 300, then covid happened which put a dampener on production of everything. So the supply for aftermarket has never caught up. You will just have to wait for the pipe. Buy the pc5 now though
I have a 2021 kawasaki KLX300R just bought it and I lowered it 2.75 inch in rear with Soupys adjustable turn buckles works fine now the front forks. Looking for a kit for the front.
Yeah I helped do the lowering for my son on his klx300r as he is a little on the short side (5'6") and it really helped him to gain better control of the bike in the gnarly stuff. We put 2" dog bone lowering links in the rear then we lowered the front end by dropping the forks by 1.5" in the triple tree clamps and it evened the bike out just fine for him. I tried it and I felt it lowered the bike by too much for me as I' m a little taller (6').

Nick what tune did you use for your power commander? I have the PC slip on, uni air filter, I am going to do the KDX snorkel to see if that helps with getting more air, but need a better tune to balance out the air
I changed nothing else. There will still some popping on deceleration but that isnt due to a lean condition. It's normal and is only caused by the design of the bike.
Nick406 I had a kx450f but it was too much bike for trail riding for me, so I sold it and bought the 300 and love it so far. In fact your videos are part of the reason I got the 300. I find first gear to be too low, thinking about dropping 3 teeth in the rear.
@@mikecummings7514 thank you! Forst gear is awesome where I live. It all depends on the terrain you ride. I ride extremely rocky terrain a lot. If it wasn't for first gear i couldn't do it. It's all preference. I say do it and let me know how you like it.
I just bought my PC5, did u mess with the air box at all? As in did u remove the snorkel or put holes in it? I don’t wanna mess w mine if I don’t have too
I removed mine and quickly discovered that when you remove the hose which leads to the intake that you have be sure and plug it as it pulsates and will suck in outside air and dirt if you don't plug it. I just cut the hose and added a screw and it has worked just fine. FYI
Hey Nick. Does this setup sacrifice general motor reliability? Since it runs very lean and corked from the factory, I imagine opening everything up would be "healthier" for the bike. Have you noticed the pipe headers appearing less blue and running cooler overall? Thanks.
Reliability is the main reason you should do these mods, the second reason is power. It runs way cooler with these mods and will make the valves and everything else last longer.
Is the KLX300R engine the same engine that is in the KLX300 Dual Sport ? Could these mods especially the fuel controller work also in the KLX300 Dual Sport ?
Do you feel like installing the power commander and an aftermarket pipe takes away from overall engine life on the bike? My main concern is how hot this bike runs factory stock condition, but I don’t want any mods to screw up mapping or overall engine life. Thanks
I very much agree with you brandon. I have had mine since june and I wish I had bought a kx250x instead cause at my age (66) the 60 lb weight savings would have made quite a difference in the control of the bike in the rough stuff. both my son and I have been pulled over on steep hillsides and as a result have to be careful in the loose sand and steep hills here in southern calif. as this bike is really top heavy.
What would you say are the must mods I’m about to get one. I had an 05 and did air box exhaust and re jet and I loved it. This is fuel injected so what do you recommend
Everything I say in my videos. The only must have is the pc5. Paired with the pc exhaust and you have a real dirtbike. Without the fuel tuner this runs too lean and is underpowered because of it.

@@drumdog53 the whole exhaust package wont do you any good at the moment. The pc5 only has 1 tune for the klx as of right now,and that tune is for a stock bike. So any mods like opening the air box or a full exhaust system will just make it run lean again. Just the silencer is fine but dont do anymore until more tunes come out for this .
Did the PC5 make the bike run cooler? I recall reading some issues with the intake valves on older 300's. Not sure if the heat on these new bikes will make that worse or not? Thanks!
Yes I explained this in my video and i accidentally deleted the last half of it! It definitely runs cooler by a lot. Power gains are nice I'm just stoked about how much more reliable this bike is now with the correct fuel ratio.
@@Nick-fs8vg Exactly what I was thinking. From my research on the older models the only issue to speak of was the intake valves caused issues typically in the 3-4k mile range. Running more fuel should keep the intakes cooler and help with that issue I would think. Love seeing your videos on the bike. Thanks.
Refer to your owner's manual but it just unplugs. There is a clip that needs to be lifted out of the way. It's hard to explain without being there. Sorry
I saw a video that said the KLX300 ( street legal version) has the same cam profile as this KLX300R . Essentially the same engine I’m assuming, with street legal accessories. I’m wondering if this same dyno jet pc5 with an fmf powercore 4 and megabomb header would be a functional combo
Yes it's all the same. It's the best way to make money for kawi. Offer different models and not have to change tooling in the manufacturing process. The dual sport is the klx 300 with more stuff bolted on .
@@Nick-fs8vg yep 👍 it’s called platform sharing, commonly used in the automotive industry ( GM / Chevrolet/ GMC or Ford / Lincoln / Mercury) all the same engine and transmission and mechanical features, just different badging and cosmetics.
Nice video , now you need to find a way to loose 25-30 lbs from the bike and re valve the suspension then add 10 hp , then she'll be on par with my stock WR250f . Nice bike though and a good value for the money .
It will only lean it out again because there is no tune yet with the airbox lid removed. Right now it has the perfect fuel to air mixture and I sproduc9ng the most power it possibly can with the pc5.
I'm really looking into getting this bike i want a nice fast but controllable bike and this seems perfect i have a Klx140L right now bought it brand new in 2016 and I'm ready for an upgrade in a year or two how are you liking the bike so far
I love it, but you never told me your height or weight, therefore I cant say if it is for you. But I will assume if you are on a 140 the this is a viable option.
I've been contemplating on this and the duke 390. Only thing is I want something fast, with those mods is it in 250 race bike range? And about how much have you spent to make it that way?
660 bucks. This would compete in an off road race against 250fs but not on a moto track. The 390 Duke isnt even in the same category. That is a street bike. This is a dirtbike. They are made for completely different things.
planning on doing both of these but having a hard time determining which to do first, in your opinion which is better to do first, next one will be done with-in 6 months after that. mostly ride trails and GNCC style riding if that helps, thanks in advance can't wait for some more aftermarket support to come out for these bike its a great platform to start and build on!
The dyno jet tuner is by far the best thing you can buy for this. Whether its first or second, it doesn't matter. By the power commander first. The only thing the exhaust does for you without the power commander is make your bike sound louder and make it run more lean. The only reason I bought the exhaust first is because the dyno jet PC was sold out and if I didn't jump on the pipe right then they would have sold out too.

Hey man, me again lol but I'm about to send it and buy the PC5 and I just wanted to know if i have to remap it or if i just plug in the PC and I'm good to go. I'm going to keep the stock exhaust but just wondering because i didn't know if it will run too lean and the pipe will get too hot. Already burnt TF out of my hand lol.
Hey! It's just plug in amd go because the map is already on it. The pc5 is going to fix your lean issue amd will make it run significantly less hot. However, the stock silencer has a catalytic converter in it and will be 1000 times hotter than a normal exhaust no matter what. It's normal for the silencer to be that hot but it sucks. Ditch that thing asap

It's okay but if you compare it to a yz it's not at all. But it's good for what it's made for. It's an open cartridge fork which means maintenance is super easy.
Hi Drew, FYI, my son and I both bought matching 300rs a few weeks apart in late july his is a 2021 and mine is a 2020 and I can tell you that the only difference is the factory graphics which were changed very slightly to show the model for the "new" year. Other than the graphics though the bikes are completely identical.
@@Nick-fs8vg I have one also. Just stock. Man it falls off pretty hard on top. I'm wanting the programmer to get the fueling a little more sensible. Not sure about exhaust yet. I kinda like that you can hoon on it without making a racket.
@@triple6758 pro circuit makes a quiet insert for 60 bucks for the t6 exhaust. I hate how loud it is in the woods too. Sounds good at the track but that's about it. The top end with the fuel tuner is an improvement but it's not big by any means.
Hey with the power commander is there an auto tune with the software or do you need to tune it manually?? I would imagine a fair amount of people that watch your vids are Klx300r owners like myself and need the extra bit of help
I will post a video explaining this but no there is no auto tune unless you buy that option. The pc 5 comes with a tune already downloaded onto it from dyno jet. They make their tunes on a dyno and need a klx300 to do it. They are trying to make the perfect air fuel ratio in each tune. They used a stock klx for there tune that comes on the pc5 and that is all there is for now But once they get their hands on a bike that has exhaust and other mods they will dyno it and make a tune for a modded klx. Once they do that you plug your pc5 I to your laptop and download the tune from the website. It's stupid easy. The auto tune feature requires installation on an o2 sensor and stuff and is a separate purchase.

At your body weight you will need stiffer springs if you ride hard. I weight about 200 and am getting new springs from racetech.

The power commander fixes the lean fuel mixture and adds a great deal of life to the engine, making it run significantly cooler

how do you feel about the weight on this bike? I just bought a klx 300r 2 weeks ago and its quite heavy for me ( I'm a beginner) I'm 6ft 230lbs

Refer to your owner's manual but it just unplugs. There is a clip that needs to be lifted out of the way. It's hard to explain without being there. Sorry

I saw a video that said the KLX300 ( street legal version) has the same cam profile as this KLX300R . Essentially the same engine I’m assuming, with street legal accessories. I’m wondering if this same dyno jet pc5 with an fmf powercore 4 and megabomb header would be a functional combo
Yes it's all the same. It's the best way to make money for kawi. Offer different models and not have to change tooling in the manufacturing process. The dual sport is the klx 300 with more stuff bolted on .

Nice video , now you need to find a way to loose 25-30 lbs from the bike and re valve the suspension then add 10 hp , then she'll be on par with my stock WR250f . Nice bike though and a good value for the money .

It will only lean it out again because there is no tune yet with the airbox lid removed. Right now it has the perfect fuel to air mixture and I sproduc9ng the most power it possibly can with the pc5.
I'm really looking into getting this bike i want a nice fast but controllable bike and this seems perfect i have a Klx140L right now bought it brand new in 2016 and I'm ready for an upgrade in a year or two how are you liking the bike so far
I love it, but you never told me your height or weight, therefore I cant say if it is for you. But I will assume if you are on a 140 the this is a viable option.

660 bucks. This would compete in an off road race against 250fs but not on a moto track. The 390 Duke isnt even in the same category. That is a street bike. This is a dirtbike. They are made for completely different things.

This is off topic but is your suspension stock or have you adjusted it?
It is stock. I just set the sag for my weight and adjust the clickers every now and then.
planning on doing both of these but having a hard time determining which to do first, in your opinion which is better to do first, next one will be done with-in 6 months after that. mostly ride trails and GNCC style riding if that helps, thanks in advance can't wait for some more aftermarket support to come out for these bike its a great platform to start and build on!
The dyno jet tuner is by far the best thing you can buy for this. Whether its first or second, it doesn't matter. By the power commander first. The only thing the exhaust does for you without the power commander is make your bike sound louder and make it run more lean. The only reason I bought the exhaust first is because the dyno jet PC was sold out and if I didn't jump on the pipe right then they would have sold out too.

It did improve yes. Very noticeable. Not world changing but noticeable

I'm going to keep the stock exhaust but just wondering because i didn't know if it will run too lean and the pipe will get too hot. Already burnt TF out of my hand lol.
Hey! It's just plug in amd go because the map is already on it. The pc5 is going to fix your lean issue amd will make it run significantly less hot. However, the stock silencer has a catalytic converter in it and will be 1000 times hotter than a normal exhaust no matter what. It's normal for the silencer to be that hot but it sucks. Ditch that thing asap

Buy the tusk 7/8 inch aluminum bars. They are cheap and high quality. They are stronger and lighter than stock and also look better.

It's okay but if you compare it to a yz it's not at all. But it's good for what it's made for. It's an open cartridge fork which means maintenance is super easy.

I have seen people who have dynoed theirs modded and it came out at 32. It's under 30 stock

Hi Drew, FYI, my son and I both bought matching 300rs a few weeks apart in late july his is a 2021 and mine is a 2020 and I can tell you that the only difference is the factory graphics which were changed very slightly to show the model for the "new" year. Other than the graphics though the bikes are completely identical.

@@Nick-fs8vg I have one also. Just stock. Man it falls off pretty hard on top. I'm wanting the programmer to get the fueling a little more sensible. Not sure about exhaust yet. I kinda like that you can hoon on it without making a racket.
@@triple6758 pro circuit makes a quiet insert for 60 bucks for the t6 exhaust. I hate how loud it is in the woods too. Sounds good at the track but that's about it. The top end with the fuel tuner is an improvement but it's not big by any means.

Hey with the power commander is there an auto tune with the software or do you need to tune it manually?? I would imagine a fair amount of people that watch your vids are Klx300r owners like myself and need the extra bit of help
I will post a video explaining this but no there is no auto tune unless you buy that option. The pc 5 comes with a tune already downloaded onto it from dyno jet. They make their tunes on a dyno and need a klx300 to do it. They are trying to make the perfect air fuel ratio in each tune. They used a stock klx for there tune that comes on the pc5 and that is all there is for now
But once they get their hands on a bike that has exhaust and other mods they will dyno it and make a tune for a modded klx. Once they do that you plug your pc5 I to your laptop and download the tune from the website. It's stupid easy. The auto tune feature requires installation on an o2 sensor and stuff and is a separate purchase.

Neither. It came with the tune on it. Once they develop more tunes all you do is download them. It's super easy
