And two years later, in 2019-2020, he was over a point a game with 75 points in 69 games played. (Finished 2nd in Norris voting) he's also had seasons where he finished 4th and 5th place in voting. Oh but this isn't Steve's channel... ah yes, but the podcast is the "steve dangle podcast network" implying it's an extension of his content lol. Short answer: they're a leaf's podcast lol, whether you access that or not. Look I get it, we have two other Canadian teams doing well this year and guaranteed one makes it to round 3. Then you have some pretty heavy hitters in the top 8 still beyond those two - its great hockey and some interesting stories. But there's a reason why leaf fans overtake opponents arenas. There's a reason why the leafs are the most valuable franchise. The harsh reality is the leafs sell, even if they are mediocre. In fact they sell so well when they are mediocre that its way more than at least a 1/3rd of the league on their best of days. So content gets created for the cash cows. When you add the fact that we're at the cross roads of a decade run of not-good-enough, it sparks a lot of conversation. Ask them to cover other content sure, I know they will appease to that. There aren't 31 teams calling on Mitch Marner. Even if his bonus is paid out, his cap hit is still the same. Few teams care about real dollar payouts. They care far more about cap hit, and there aren't 31 teams that can fit that dude under the cap.

Tons of respect to Keefe, recorded breaking regular season coach, knew they couldn't get the playoff goals seasons ago and tried to get then there. Years down the road leafs fans win miss Keefe and the points in season he bought. Good coach , shelf time ran out

Steve raised an amazing point. If you take a bottom of the league hardworking team and put them in the finals, what they would do. That was basically the Habs when they went to the finals after during Covid, the NHL let in two more teams in the playoffs Montreal and Chicago. In the regular season, the same D core with Weber, Chiarot, Edmunston, Kulak, etc....were damn pilons and couldn't get out of their zone. It was maddening to watch. In the playoffs they became an amazing shield wall where it was difficult to get at Price. This is what it takes, basically. Regular season is about skills, playoffs is about grit. And the highly skilled Leafs forward just cannot get into the greasy areas. None of them can. Time to move them and build a team where the top guys can do that as well.
sorry, Toronto deserves a second Hockey club. This whole Leaf thing has gotten to be such dogshit, I mean, Ive only been a fan since '75 and Im just tired of these really stupid executives continuously making garbage decisions. They prob have no-move clauses too. Toronto deserves so much more than what the MLSE offers.
I like how at the end, these guys just realized than an elite defenseman is needed. I've said it before, my problem with the Leafs isn't that they're paying their superstars it's that all their superstars are forwards. Spread the love to other positions!
dude thats crazy. you just broke news of a new 3v3 $30m cap 14 or whatever team NA pro leauge and just did a pod pretending you didnt lol. thats so goofy bro. you're supposed to be a professional innit
Covid boned my blues pretty good as well. We were a well oiled machine on march 12th 2020, looking to defend our championship. Then 4 months later in the bubble we forgot how to play hockey. We made the avs work for it in '22 but aside from that its been a downward spiral, missing the playoffs 2 yrs in a row now. Covid isnt the only reason why, but if we made a deep run in '20 in a parallel universe with no covid, maybe even repeat, this team is way different and berube is still here.
The EK65 contract signed in 2019 would also have been way less of a problem for the Sharks if the cap went up the next few years. I like a lot of things about how our rebuild is going though, so i guess there is that.
I like how they said they werent going to talk about the Hurricanes until later and then proceeded to describe the offensive woes of the team to a tee. It just happens to be that the Leafs and the Canes have the same offensive systems which don't work in the playoffs.
1:24:23 "Don't you play into that." what's that Adam? The reality that Mitch doesn't have to waive if he doesn't want to? It isn't playing into anything to acknowledge the reality.
31:11 Steve is categorically wrong, here. In literally from the Amazon Doc they were just referencing, Keefe's speech to the team before their choke-job to end the series in OT, he makes a speech that is for the ages. Really disappointed this wasn't brought up because when all the FireKeefe™ mouthbreathers were sharing that clip of Berube vs Keefe, all I could think about was the speech from the Montreal series.
@@YasserUMhe hyped up a new pro hockey league starting up in a couple months in October, with a 30 million dollar salary cap in a video. He has since took it down.

What really happened last year was Dubas went to trade Marner, he was told no. He talked to the penguins and got a deal in his back pocket, went back to the management and tried to go over shanahan because he realized (four years too late instead of five) that it wasn’t gonna work. Tried to get final say on hockey decisions. MLSE went with shanahan. Is that all hearsay, sure but it’s the only thing that makes sense
Chucky was literally a ghost for Calgary in the playoffs literally every time they made it. Its not as bad of a trade as people make it out to be Weegar is a stud too. Combo that with the fact you knew he wasn't gonna resign Calgary still won that trade. They would have had a ghost another year and got nothing if it went any other way.
Someone said the problem with Carolina is that they 'play playoff hockey' all year - so they're always 'on' and seem better during the season and then you get to the playoffs and every other team /starts/ playing playoff hockey and the Canes don't adjust. I think the Leafs are in the same boat.
in hindsight the SJ guys did mentor our young stars, it just backfired. take it easy and go for the biggest chq you can get was how they were mentored.
1:25:45 and yet when Mats came back to Toronto with Vancouver the next year and scored the OT winner for the Canucks u would've thought that the Leafs just won the way the crowd cheered him.
I liked most of what the guys had to say except for the point on Vancouver neutralizing McDavid this series. It was one game and since then McDavid has said he just played poorly and didn’t work as hard as he possibly can. What did he do in game 2? 4 points, game-tying goal and assisted the game winner in overtime. Vancouver couldn’t do anything to stop him.
1:24:00 Adam forgets that players talk. And if an organization known for their failures does this to a star player at the end of their contract, they'll be less likely to attract other free agents to their organization. Just look at Buffalo as a prime example. Mitch is going to say, I'll waive, but only to this team (or max 3), and the Leafs are going to have to work in those restrictions.
Adam keeps mentioning that making money doesn’t matter to these owners , because franchises keeping going up in value…. Or some kind of phrasing of that. Sometimes it’s something about a ‘tax write off’ and maybe it’s not always about the owners. But a tax write off isn’t free money , it’s still an expense. At some point these franchises have to make money. Why else would they go up in value. This is the same type of thinking that led to the GFC is it not 🤷♂️
I would like to point out on the discussion of top D for the playoffs that Letang missed the entire 2017 playoff run. I dont think that invalidates the point in any way but just wanted to point that out
I think that the Leafs should make a pitch to Tavares to go to Chicago. He can sign an extension there for 3-4 more years on a lower contract and take Bedard under his wing. Leafs can take a 6th round draft pick for all they care. For Marner, they should trade him to Nashville for Saros. Use the cap space from the two of them gone to sign Montour and another top pair defenseman along with resigning Domi and Bertuzzi. Maybe find another couple depth pieces on the free agent market as well.

@@stephenphillips6245 so basically they posted a video yesterday about a league that would be of a certain caliber, and whatever details. The salary cap, number of teams number of players, and everything was a little too sketch so people were already doubting it. Steve tweeted today that there was some questionable information and therefore they took down the video.
At the moment are two possibilities: they got paid to do an ad and they did not disclose that or bad journalism. Both of which should be addressed before this video is published.
Didn't even start the music before making a mistake. Caleb is on avs, Seth is bhawks. Come on steve
Have some patience everyone! He has adressed the MLH debacle on twitter and I expect him to adress it further either on this channel or his own. This podcast was most likely recorded before or shortly after the video was made/released. Other outlets have released similar statements showing it's not just Steve who got false information. Don't let this one thing be something that stains all the good Steve has done and does currently.
What other outlets. Steve was the source other outlets took and they aren’t addressing it because they got paid for it
What good? Bro what are you even talking about?
Dude just spergs out about the leafs, Stop pretending like he does more for people then that.
@@thebeatleswin1 Have a thesis:
TL;DR: He's a bit more than the shouty red faced man in a leafs jersey...
On his own channel, sure. He "spergs" on the leafs at times. He also reliably recaps leafs games in a unique way for international fans such as myself who can't see the games live because the games happen at 1 am at the earliest.
He raises money for various charities, he cares for his family and runs an independent podcast network that is high quality and delivers news and podcasts up to a professional standard that fill out a lot of blanks for fans who are engaged past the inevitable annual first round game 7 loss LFR.
Steve cares for and about this community. I can see how people see him as a screaming man who is in a toxic relationship with a sports team. But it doesn't take much to see the genuine passion he has and shares with fellow fans. Whether it's rallying after a win or screaming after yet another loss that makes no sense.
Keep your preconcieved notions. But Steve does a heck of a lot more for this community, the leafs and I'd argue the sport as a whole than the rest of us. And that's purely out of passion. If he so wished, he could up and leave. Get a steady job again and start cheering for the Oilers or something. But he doesn't. Reiterating here for emphasis: He cares too much about the Leafs, the community and the sport overall to just quit on us.
Adam Brought it up at the beginning of the livestream for Van/Edm game 2. But I agree, they should have made a video or something more about it earlier.
@@zrogers3640 I noted some reputable-ish looking sources around the same time saying similar things. I could just as easily be wrong and I'm not a good person for taking those at face value and you might also be right that they took information straight from the video. In that case I apologise for pulling statements out of thin air.
What I will not agree on is that they're not acknowledging and addressing the issue because they're getting paid to. They have a delay due to the production of the podcast. They most likely spoke about MLH in this episode and cut it out in editing because they are actively back tracking and giving the story itself less coverage. They haven't had time to release more than tweets adressing this at the moment. For as little as I know Steve personally, I am certain that he will properly adress the whole thing in due time with a video either here or on the personal channel.
He won't let us down. I wholeheartedly believe that.
One of those Penguins teams did not have a big name defenseman because Letang was hurt for the entire playoffs.
Is nobody gonna mention Steve’s fuckery with MLH?
The fact this was posted without addressing the MLH debacle is wild.
Steve said they would talk about it on the pod. So they knowingly didn’t bring it up after they found out Steve fucked up?
Really not a good look for SDPN, but especially Steve.
its gonna be on the next one. they probably couldnt fit it in
I think you'll survive.
You guys can address it or let it fester, I'll be waiting eagerly with baited breath
Why do you even care

2017 Penguins didn’t have letang in the playoffs. They had Ron Hainsey
I love how people always go like "They will give the moon for this player that we DON'T want" like the other teams don't see the same issues you do...lol
Think it was a mistake to not touch on the MLH stuff here. Still a fan and will continue to watch/listen, but you can't just sweep that under the rug...
They preach they are holier than thou and try to seem so perfect. Make fun of anyone with the opposite opinions. Hope they learn from it.
People crap on the panthers regular season last year and act like it was a shock they went to the finals. They literally won the president's trophy the year before...
@@johnq2068yeah, this one is better for the playoffs. the core earlier was a regular season core
Penguins never had letang in the 2017 playoffs. Justin Schultz was their #1
Idk how it's even a debate that John Carlson was at the bare minimum a top 5 NHL defenseman in 2018 considering he literally lead all defenseman in scoring that year lol
Dude was underrated at the prime of his career
And two years later, in 2019-2020, he was over a point a game with 75 points in 69 games played. (Finished 2nd in Norris voting) he's also had seasons where he finished 4th and 5th place in voting.
He was a legit top 5 defenseman in the league for a few years and certainly was when they won the cup.
Agreed. And Pietrangelo is great but hes not top 5 NHL anymore.
Please let this be the last leafs episode until something interesting actually happens 🙏 The good teams are still playing hockey!
Hes literally a leaf content creator
Tell a weather man to stop talking about weather because weather is not crazy rn
@@juvialockser9912 he's the host of hockey podcast, not a leaf podcast. I've got no problem with talking about the leafs but the last three episodes have been 90% leafs talk, which I'm fine with considering the perpetual dumpster fire that team and city is. But so much happened that they didn't talk about, and I don't just mean Steve's lack of journalistic due diligence and professionalism in regards to the MLH debacle.
@@ChadMoiMedia I'm sorry to break this to you but they started out as a leaf's podcast. And if that wasn't evident, they say all the time they are a leafs first podcast lol. Of course if you don't want to believe that without the timestamps, fair, but then there's Steve's channel which is leafs content.
But don't expect them not to talk leafs when this is very much a leafs centric podcast lol. Even when there's not much to say, they will find a way to link it back to the leafs, its not hard to do. Embrace that and push for the stories you want covered on top of it.
@@ChadMoiMediathen don’t listen? Leafs are more important than your favourite team even if the leafs finished in 32nd place. Get lost and never come back.

@@hillfortherstudios2757 It's Major League Hockey - a 3v3 hockey league starting later this year. Steve "broke" that "story" yesterday, but the video appears to be have been deleted. Supposedly it would be Saudi-funded adn people believe that SDPN was paid to "break" it.
They better not apologize. Apologize to public forums always backfire. Just own it.
They could advertise shrooms, weed, alcohol, cigarettes and I wouldn't care. I'd still watch, my cracked version of TH-cam that auto skips video ads would still skip them.
Not a big deal at all
Sheldon Keefe's video is like Frodo when he was about to Sail off into the Undying Lands.
Zach Werenski, Zach Hyman and Nazim Kadri. There was your core to build a team around.
A recent case supporting Steve’s talk of big bodies at the net around 53:00, the Canucks made that big comeback against the Predators using Nikita Zadorov as their net front guy for the 6v5. There’s definitely something to it.
First of all, if you were paying attention to the World Championships last year when Latvia won bronze you DEFINITELY know who Silovs is. He won MVP. He was the biggest story outside the playoffs at the time.
Also I hope this was recorded after the MLH debacle. Have to address it.
Not that it matters but, Europe has won 8 of the last 11 Ryder Cups.
That was a whole lot on an uneventful press conference when there’s 4 series going on 🧐

I think I need a break from Adam's control issues. Maybe just watch LFRs
The "we'll get to that later" "I wanna save that for later" stuff?
It’s infuriating. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves” and hushes Steve and Jesse. Then proceeds to steer the conversation into whatever angle he would like it to go in. Just let the podcast flow man, it’s much more natural that way.
@@cedricfr19 He's the Gregg Opie Hughes of the show

Steve, is one I tune in for. I don't tune in to watch him being mocked or having Adam stomp on his delivery.
LUL Adam is such a boomer when it comes to Kyle Dubas. "Who cares about his feelings? He lied about spending time with his family!"' But with Brad Treliving, he's so sensitive. "He HAD to give Sheldon Keefe an extension... because he thought he was such a nice guy!" "He HAD to give John Klingberg a contract, because apparently he's unable to find a better D man to trade for!"
It's so weird. He has lost all ability to be unbiased and neutral. He used to be the most unbiased member of this podcast, now he is BY FAR the worst.
Dubas apologists are the biggest group of annoying children in the hockey world. The guy is a mid ass GM and the ultimate politician. Go cry in a corner
There aren't 31 teams calling on Mitch Marner. Even if his bonus is paid out, his cap hit is still the same.
Few teams care about real dollar payouts. They care far more about cap hit, and there aren't 31 teams that can fit that dude under the cap.
Sheldon was chastised in the media for his fired up "this is the time" speech. Damned if u do damned if u don't! Rookie pres, rookie GM, rookie couch. Mistakes were made

I am hoping we get some talk about the Canucks-Oilers game in this episode (before things go to hell for us tonight lol)
Also I once again gotta acknowledge how good Adam’s Canucks streams have been, I was very skeptical when they said Adam’s gonna be doing them but it’s been a great time.
Tons of respect to Keefe, recorded breaking regular season coach, knew they couldn't get the playoff goals seasons ago and tried to get then there. Years down the road leafs fans win miss Keefe and the points in season he bought. Good coach , shelf time ran out
Reasons to move:
Marner: Not sure if Leafs fans have universally united on something as big as moving this player
Tavares: Great player, getting older, would be a great mentor in Chicago for Bedard
Rielly: Been with the organization for 12 years. Got past the first round once. its time to move on from our "#1 D"
Love the shirt Jessie! Gotta promote!
Look, I love you guys, but I really expected the MLH thing to be addressed, seems pretty weird that it hasn't been considering the criticism in the comments and it's eventual deletion.

Adam's shut up I'm talking left arm move is back
Does Steve know of new hockey 🏒 leagues opening in 🇨🇦 Canada 😂😂😂😂
nice to see everyone still trying to run marner out of town. i'ma paraphrase kurt cobain: "it's not the team i hate, it's their fans."
Hey, Steve! You got the MLH schedule for us yet? So excited for the new league! Thanks for being so great at what you do! 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
sorry, Toronto deserves a second Hockey club.
My husband and I were laughing at the mic issues as well LOL

He got taken for a ride, took oil money like a shill, and then realized he fucked up. Clownshow.
Steve “ it’s because the Mug is rare?! “
Perfect analogy by Adam
Really disappointed this wasn't brought up because when all the FireKeefe™ mouthbreathers were sharing that clip of Berube vs Keefe, all I could think about was the speech from the Montreal series.
the TML are exhausting
Gotta love a show that starts with, "I just think it's funny how..."

If I remember correctly one of the years the Pens one the cup I remember all their d man being injured and Ron Hainsey being their #1 (he signed with leafs the year after)
47:25 Arturs is a create a ggoalie name cause it sounds like it.
Definetly heard of this goalie. Arturs Irbe, latvian goalie legend and latvian national team goalie coach. Coached Silovs in 2023 bronze medal run.
Yay been waiting for this for a while
Someone said the problem with Carolina is that they 'play playoff hockey' all year - so they're always 'on' and seem better during the season and then you get to the playoffs and every other team /starts/ playing playoff hockey and the Canes don't adjust.
No talk of the MLH thing and the video on it was deleted, too. I've never been more confused in my life lmao
One of these days steve will read a singular other book. One day.
**believes so f-ing hard**
I liked most of what the guys had to say except for the point on Vancouver neutralizing McDavid this series.
It was one game and since then McDavid has said he just played poorly and didn’t work as hard as he possibly can. What did he do in game 2? 4 points, game-tying goal and assisted the game winner in overtime. Vancouver couldn’t do anything to stop him.
Steve please never report news ever again lol
Or be correct, and do your due diligence. I thought some people there had journalism degrees...
This is the same type of thinking that led to the GFC is it not 🤷♂️
I couldn't understand what Treliving said about Joe Woll's injury. I was like who is he talking about? Yes. His microphone was not working well.
I would like to point out on the discussion of top D for the playoffs that Letang missed the entire 2017 playoff run. I dont think that invalidates the point in any way but just wanted to point that out
what is the more toxic affiliation tho? Saudi Aribia or Tim Hortons?
I found Treliving very upfront and straightforward. I found Shanahan as, dare I say, not needed? We'll see next off season.
