Steve is 100% right in that we've basically gone back to the Teachers Pension days. When fan apathy was at its highest from around 2014-2016, MLSE took steps to make the team actually good and now that they're good enough to make the playoffs every year, they don't care at all to actually improve the team into being a contender.
Exactly. And they're going to waste another prime year of having the best goal scorer in the league because they care more about the bottom line than actually making changes to make the team a contender.
This is why I say Canadian fans shouldn't call the playoffs rigged against them in trying to win a cup. A lot of this is self-inflicted wounds by ownership. The Leafs are THE most profitable team in the league, and ownership would rather be comfortable than try to contend. It's pathetic. US teams are not doing this.
I've been saying this forever look at how poorly Canadian markets are managed. That's why they don't win. Everyone of them is the old boys club running things.
Why bother doing the work to put a contending team on the ice, if they're already making all the money. At the same time it's on the players like Matthew's, Marner and J.T didn't exactly do what's best for the team by not maxing out their contracts and paydays in order to put a winning team around them. The core 4 got paid and now they don't care. This is on the players just as much if not more than managment.

I'm one of those "old guys" (1969) who has never seen this team win---biggest reason? IT'S ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT THE MONEY!!--From Ballard to Stavro to the pension fund to current day--as long as the team has a good bottom line, the "owners" really dont care if they win or not. You want to see the team have success? Put a second team in the GTA and gives fans a choice of where to put funds (and share tv revenue) and you'd likely see "results" on the ice be more important.
I'm a Sens fan. Somehow the Leafs fans take on the Travis Green hiring is one of the most reasonable I've heard online so far.
Why do you think they like it? Because they see the writing on the wall : An easy 2 points for the leafs for the next 4 seasons everytime they play the Senators.

21:00 Shanahan gave Babcock an 8 year contract. So of course he didn’t want to have him fired. People forget this. When they fired him Shanahan was part of the announcement press conference. Signing a coach to a 8 year contract was unprecedented. So of course Shanahan didn’t want to dismiss him too soon. That would look bad on signing him to 8 years and being on the hook for that contract. Nobody talks about this.
My problem with the Leafs is that they kept Keefe after Canadiens loss. They established a losing culture starting with the coach who never got the team playing the best hockey of the year in the postseason. Never. Couldn’t manage his players that played poorly. See Holl, Brodie, Marner, etc. Coaching job is to get the best out of your roster. And to have accountability for poor play. He’s also responsible for managing the offensive attack, PP which failed miserably every post season. Absolutely absurd they kept running back with this inexperienced coach. The kicker was never putting in a reliable goaltender every year in the playoffs.

Taylor Hall brought a team with Keith Kinkaid as the starter to the playoffs. He earned that Hart trophy.

And Coop is COMPLETELY disrespected because he coaches in Tampa. He's NEVER won Coach of the Year. He's the guy here (in Tampa) that EVERYONE loves. Not to mention his work in the community. He'll have a statue outside of Amalie, when he's done. Longest tenured coach in the league and there is NO QUESTION, EVER as to his standing in the organization. He's NEVER on the "hot seat" and never will be.
Prediction: The Leafs management team will make absolutely no changes to their coach, GM, or core 4.

You guys don't get it. Maple Leaf Gardens SOLD OUT every single night in the 80's when the team was the dogs breakfast. The Leafs have ALWAYS made so much money hand over fist. The tickets have ALWAYS been expensive. But, we Leaf fans buy them and merch every single year. THAT is why management doesn't and never has cared because of the money they made without even trying....and Shanahan has made them all the more for his efforts.

Kucherov is the 3rd player in history to hit 40 goals and 100 assists. He was on the ice for over 50% of tampas goals, he ran the most effective powerplay in the regular season. I dont get why people are arguing him for not winning an MVP

Sports teams should be partially owned by the fans/city. It'd make so much about sports work better. Multi-million dollar stadiums funded by taxes become investments in the city, ownership won't be in it just for the money, cities won't just lose their team because of greedy owners. That's how the Bundesliga in Germany works and its one of the top football leagues in the world

I did some stats for cup winning coaches.
Since 2005, the average number of years a coach has been with a team before winning their first cup with that team is 2.8 years.
Only two coaches (Cooper and Bednar) were there longer than 4 years before winning.
I feel like Keefe has to go. The stats do not support him staying.

The average fan doesn't care how successful MLSE is...the fans want their team to win, they want to wear their team jerseys as champions, for bragging rights, to have the feeling that I was lucky to have in High School when "my team" won every year
Now and again I am reminded that I support you with my time and money, and often hear contrary, completely wrong viewpoints. Keep it up, boys. I love it.
I agree with Adam: The Ted Lindsey and the Hart are two separate trophies, and while Kucherov carried the Lightning, Matthews, MacKinnon, and McDavid are all better players. And I'd contend that MacKinnon is better than Kucherov any day of the week, because he's putting up numbers on a team where a lot of other players are putting up numbers. MacKinnon competes for production in Colorado in a way that Kucherov doesn't in Tampa.
That said, the SDPN "The Avs are MacKinnon and Makar" take is... out of touch with reality. The idea that the Avs don't have depth, don't have broad skill, and that two players - who are superstars without a doubt - carry that team is insulting to the likes of Rantanen, Nitchuskin, Drouin, or Toews.
This isn't an EXACT comparison...but it's relevant, I think. Compare the Leaf's to my Lightning. 2015 was the year the Lightning promoted Kucherov, Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat to the NHL...AS A LINE. They immediately became the Lightning 2nd line. They made the playoffs nearly every year (missing 1 year by a POINT) and lost every year. Granted they had deeper runs than the Leafs but never won a Cup. After the 2018-2019 season, after winning the Presidents Cup and getting swept by the Jackets in the FIRST ROUND...EVERYONE in Tampa was calling for a tear-down. "We can't win with this team". Yzerman and Brisbois ran it back. Stamkos and Hedman were older than Marner, Matthews and Nylander, when they won the Cup the following year. I think it's a fine line between, "give it time" and "that's been enough time". The problem the Leaf's Organization has is that there has been nearly ZERO post=season success as opposed to what the Lightning went through.
The funny part about Paul Maurice reference is Maurice was the Canes coach when they made the ECF in 2009. So Rangers this season, Maurice last season, have had Rod’s number and both coached him to deep playoff runs when he wore the C.

The gymnastics to make McDavid the winner of every award in hockey should be an Olympic sport. Selke, Lindsay, Jack Adams, Vezina all based on his PPG and the Oilers’ place in the standings.

What drives me nuts about the Ted Lindsey award is IT IS the MVP of the league, Hart is most valuable to their teams success.
Yet any time the Ted Lindsey is mentioned its; "Best player as voted by the NHLPA", as if it means anything differentiating whether media or players vote. We don't say Hart trophy as voted by the media

Jesse....I AM born in 1968. I am 55. I was a fan watching the Leafs with my dad on HNIC since the mid 70's (good teams, bad owner), suffered in all the 80's (bad teams, bad owner), Steve Stavros got serious early 90's and the Leafs had pride again. I don't see that pride in this team or the last 8 years. All I see is greed and entitlement (Austin, Nylander and Reily aside). Imagine how PISSED I am as...I would LOVE to live LONG enough to see the Leafs win or at least be in the picture. I'm not sure that is going to happen.

You should compare the time line on the last team that burn it to the ground and turned it around.

Last year was 100 years of the Hart trophy, but this award will be the 100th time it's been awarded (wasn't awarded in 04-05 due to the lockout).
I do believe though that if they can keep this team together for the most part and make some coaching changes behind the bench like get rid of a couple then maybe they can do something.
Sens fan here: My take here on Travis Green isn't necessarily that he is the wrong coach, but that it was the wrong time to hire that particular coach. Ottawa waited all year and Staios has talked about patience repeatedly. In the next 2 weeks we're probably going to find out what round 1 coaches have been fired, but right now it's not like we even have the complete list of available candidates. If Travis Green was a super hot commodity then I get it, but I don't think there were teams lining up to hire him so Ottawa should have had the leverage to delay to see all the names available. If in a couple weeks you still think he's your guy then great hire him, I just don't think you had to do it before knowing all the available candidates.

The Leafs really are thought of as gods in Toronto. As proof, after game 7 there were a number of fans making burnt offerings of jerseys with Marner's name on it.
Having the management press conference can mean changes just as much as no changes. If they hold it on Friday, anything they say gets lost in the weekend while they make their getaway. It wouldn't shock me to see them run it back again for next season. It wouldn't even shock me if they chose to continue with Keith as their head coach, although he's felt like a walking dead man for months. It won't even shock me if they resign Mitch Marner and John Tavares.
As great as Matthews was he was just so far behind Kuch Mack and Mcdavid in points i just don't see him being a hart or lindsay nominee

The biggest point that EVERYONE glosses over when discussing the "best" player is that hockey is a 200' game, not just played in the O-zone. You cannot just name scoring stats in an argument over who's the best player. D-zone & neutral zone play must factor into the conversation. Position played is a factor. If you're going to win an award like the Ted Lindsey or the Hart as a winger or defenseman, you need to be MILES ahead of a centreman statistically.

Adam´s reasoning on the Ted Lindsey (and Hart) discussion is totally crazy. "If this would have happened" or "if that would have happened" does not matter because it didn´t. And the award is not supposed to be given to the best player in the world, it´s supposed to be given to the player that was best (in case of the Ted Lindsey) or most important to the team (in case of the Hart) THIS season.
What it comes down to, is that fans need to stop buying tickets.

The argument that Dubas was going to trade one of the core is such nonsense in my opinion. He doubled, tripled, and quadrupled down on the core and had a prime opportunity to do it after Montreal. No, THIS time, after he finally got fired (which should have been for failing so many times not for making a corporate power move), this was the time he was actually going to do it. Sorry he shouldn’t get any benefit of the doubt whatsoever.
