2004 Forester XT STI conversion

  • A walk-around of my 2004 Forester XT that has been converted to STI. It is about 99% complete, the only thing that really is left to do, is to install an STI gauge cluster.
    Note: I am referring to the option for 5spd manual with leather and sunroof was not offered for the 2004 model year Forester XT. The Sunroof was only available with an automatic for 2004.
    Additional Note: The sunroof in my combination was a dealership installed option, commonly practiced on cars that did not offer sunroofs.

    This thing is awesome. It’s got a lot of the things i’d want to do if I had an sti swap. Starting to save up and gather a parts list of junk so I’ll see where it goes.

    I was just on Cargurus looking at an 05 XT with a 5 speed manual in my area. I don't see manual ones often but they are around. I plan to do an XT to STI swap on an 04-08 when the time comes. Nice job thanks for the video.

      CALIFORNIA APPROVED HANDGUNS The forester has the same block and internals as the STI . Swapping out the motor is a waste of money. Upgrade the turbo and fuel system and you're good to go.

      Thank you, and yes, there would have been a few things I would have changed as well, but this vehicle is now in the hands of Redemption Garage and has gotten a complete make-over. I have moved on to a 2000 Impreza 2.5RS Coupe (Race Car) and 2001 Mazda Miata LS as my new projects.

    There is definitely more that I want to do, but right now I am too busy and it just gets to drive around once in a while... Ultimate goal will be to completely strip it down and rebuild the entire vehicle (powder coat the entire underside and all components, etc.) But I have to wait for that right now.

      hey I have a 2007 forester xt what year sti parts will fit in my fxt? How much would cost around also?

    • @Dirka_n_Raszaron
      @Dirka_n_Raszaron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pretty much everything from the 05-07 STIs can be swapped over. But, if you start doing it, you pretty much have to do all of it (Trans, driveshaft, R180, halfshafts, hubs, suspension, etc). There is a lot of build threads on SubaruForester.org of these builds being done, and I highly recommend you do a lot of reading on this subject there! That's how I got started and saved me from a lot of headaches.
      As to the cost, for everything that I did to my Forester, it was like buying a new STI.... so, it all depends on how far you want to go and how much you can do yourself.

Also, the right front corner of my Grimmspeed intercooler shroud is already cracked by seating on the front right outside frame of the intercooler. Not sure I'm gonna combat this one

    I was told that the forester had an entirely different wiring harness than a wrx or sti.. just wondering if the fxt had the plugs already or if you had do some custom wiring for the DCCD controls .. I have a 2004 fxt premium doing research for a 6speed swap im trying to avoid as much wiring as possible. thanks

      There are two companies that make plug and play adapters so you can use the DCCD. I used DCCD Pro, I cannot remember the other company. Check out SubaruForester.org as many people have good information on there about the swap! I loved the Forester even more after the swap!

    I have an 05 forester xt. Just upgraded the top mount to STI,with a vf39 turbo. How did you get you top mount to totally recycle the blow off? I can't seem to make any thing work. I hate that psst sound every time I shift.

    • @Dirka_n_Raszaron
      @Dirka_n_Raszaron  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you using the stock recirc valve that is typically on the TMIC? If so, you may have either a split/cracked recirc hose, or it isn't fully on the recirc valve.
      I have the GoFastBits deceptor pro as my electronically controlled blowoff/recirc valve. I usually set it up to full recirc, and periodically will VTA. It took a while to set it up so it wouldn't have leak by, but that is primarily done by setting the spring and testing it until it no longer happens.

    Fantastic build man! Love it! How did you deal with the crushed BPV recirculation hose? The hose that goes from the bpv on the intercooler, under the throttle body and into the turbo inlet hose? Mine is getting crushed by the throttle body! Pretty frustrating. Can't find any hoses out there that would fix this problem by re-routing around it.

    • @Dirka_n_Raszaron
      @Dirka_n_Raszaron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris, I changed out all my hoses to Samco Silicone hoses (with the exception of the Turbo Inlet Hose, that was Perrin). It is a tight area, and any place that touched on any hose I used, I cut a piece of the original hose and used zipties to create a buffer.
      Additionally, are you using new hoses from the Intercooler to the TB? I also used the Samco Silicone Y-Pipe here as well.
      It's been awhile since I did that, but I don't ever remember having issues.

    • @chrismighton
      @chrismighton 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply! I actually used a combination of hoses to try to redirect the BPV recirc hose out of the way of the throttle body. It's still getting a little pinched though :( You can see my modification to the hose here flic.kr/p/PVRjCf
      You mentioned that you used a Samco Hose in order to help fix this problem, do you know the part number for that particular bpv recirc hose that's sold by Samco? I'm also using a Perrin turbo inlet hose ;)

    • @Dirka_n_Raszaron
      @Dirka_n_Raszaron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris- the part number was TCS168, but RallySportDirect is stating the kit is discontinued.

  • @ethanheck23

    Were you using the stock XT ECU with the STI motor, or did you go with a standalone and make a new wiring harness?

    • @Dirka_n_Raszaron
      @Dirka_n_Raszaron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually kept the 2004 XT motor (EJ255) as I preferred it over the EJ257. Everything else drivetrain wise was from a 2005 STI and the turbo/TMIC was from a 2007 STI. The EJ255 was putting out plenty of power reliably, so I wasn't going to mess with that!

    huge exhaust volume and larger rear anti-roll torque bar.
    So what was your wb hp and torque before you started with the mods.
    Are you still out there and maybe you can help me get further with this damned Komputer garbage. But I need another good beater. I got this one for $400 and learning as I go but slow because of post COVID 19 health and post klinikal study health and post assault health.
    I had a change in health during sleep when after waking-up I noticed a strong type of musty smell in the heater air which I thought I had eliminated with the ozone and running the heat&a.c. on recirc but my nose this morning clearly sensing differently says that isn't the case. What can I use to kill that fungal in the heat system it is what in part asside from the work place and new victorian suites and red roof in musties is what is paining my lungs and causing me to be tired and fatigued and oversleeping.

    • @Dirka_n_Raszaron
      @Dirka_n_Raszaron  ปีที่แล้ว

      I never dyno'd the Forester XT prior to modifying it. It was completely stock when I bought it and it ran pretty good then too. So I would guess that it made close to what any stock 2004 Forester XT would have made (WHP/TQ). If you got a vehicle for cheap and you are having issues with smells inside the cabin (musty/moldy), I would open up the fan enclosure and make sure nothing made a home in there (mice like to invade areas like this and set up a home). Otherwise, I've read an forums that you can use lysol spray in the duct work to kill fungal spores and bacteria. Personally, I'd probably tear apart the entire duct work and wash it all, dry it, and then reinstall it. But that is labor intensive!

      Very easily. Once it was converted to STI, I had to trim the Subtle Solutions hood scoop air diverter to fit better. Additionally, I put rubber hose around the AC lines as a precaution if any rubbing should occur. I had no issues though.

  • @Overkill14
    @Overkill14 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Who told you the 5 speed wasn't available in the US? They're wrong. Also the Forester xt does not have the STi motor. The XT uses an ej255/while the STi uses an ej257, which is just a bit stronger.

    • @Dirka_n_Raszaron
      @Dirka_n_Raszaron  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2004 XT was not offered with the combination of 5spd manual and leather w/sunroof (premium) *{edit}-the 5spd was only offered with a cloth interior for the 04 model year and no sunroof (not the premium package)*. That combination was not officially offered until the 05 model year. However, my 04 did have it (confirmed through SoA). Don't know how the dealership did it, but it happened.
      That being said, the motor is the same as the STIs, it is the internals that make it the 255 vice the STIs 257. The 05 had the same engine, as where Subaru went to the Legacy motor for the 06-07 Forester XTs.
      Yes, I have extensively researched my vehicle, and the Forester XTs. Great source of information is SubaruForester.org or have a friend who is a POC with SoA!
      But thank you for your inputs.

    • @Overkill14
      @Overkill14 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought you meant it wasn't available at all with a 5 speed, I didn't realize you mean't with leather etc...also if I'm not mistaken I believe the 257 has forged crank/rods where as the 255 has standard crank/rods? Upstate Redneck No problem, if I remember correctly they were both forged pistons, only the the piston tops were different for the 255. I cannot remember were the link is though on it. My tuner said I would have no issues running some serious power with my engine (Agile), it was the stock 5spd I would have problems with. I will have to check out your journal when I get some time!

      No, I was still utilizing the stock EJ255 vice the STI's EJ257. The motor was already making 310awhp/333ftlbs, so I wasn't going to mess with that. Everything else for the most part was replaced with STI goodness from a totaled 05 STI, but it has a lot of other model year STI parts on it as well.

That option combo wasn't available until the 2005 model year. Later on, I found out that the sunroof was a dealer add-on option. I wasn't talking about just the 5mt not being offered.

    how did you get the STI tmic on with the AC line?

      I used a piece of rubber vacuum hose and zip tied it to the bend on the passenger side so any movement would not cause metal on metal rubbing. I did slightly bend the line by hand to provide a little more clearance (but ever so slightly). Otherwise it fit nicely. I could not however use a strut tower brace in the front because of the AC lines. In order to make that work I would have had to reroute the lines to underneath the TMIC.
