Not that I think there's something wrong with that. But I do think that is what Liam likes and is comfortable with. He likes Hamlet and Shakespeare's tragedies (and have you seen his oneshots). I think his characters will always lean towards the darker side. I'm happy to be proven wrong
I felt this, so much. Getting back into campaign prep for "Season 4" of my group's campaign and I just know I'll be doing a major deep-dive that requires at least two weeks before the actual game session 😂😭
I don't feel that at all. I wing 90% of my content, all my prep is done before the campaign even starts. The only thing I need to take into account is the party's reputation with the npcs they interact with, and where everything is in the world, and those notes happen during the session. As long as my notes are organized, which *has* been an issue once or twice, the game goes smoothly. I roll my random encounters at the table and just whip out a battle mat from a stack of pre-drawn sheets when needed. Remember guys, you don't need to have Mercer's insane set pieces. Hell, you don't even need to paint your minis. If everyone is having fun, you're doing your job correctly.
Man, I do a weekly game, and I struggle to find time to prep. I can't imagine how it is for Matt. I only worry about a 40 hour a week job and that's about it. I don't have a wife, an entire company, a charity, and VO work to worry about as well.

I've been running Curse of Strahd, and even if everything is laid out for you, there is a LOT of cross referencing things in the book because of its rather shitty layout. Well, that isn't fair, it isn't their fault, it's whoever decided that campaign books should be separated by location and that room descriptions should be in some geometrical order. "There are four doors, two to the north, and two to the south." "Okay, we go through the south door on the left." "Okay, let me flip two pages ahead and remind myself of that trap DC and then immediately flip back to a different page because I know one of you fuckers is gonna go a different direction"
OMG very much so. I genuinely don't know how Matt pulls it together the way he does every week. I run a weekly game and 90% of my "planning" is improv and reacting to what my players are doing

Well, I mean, that's happened once. Not that I'm saying it's impossible, but I wouldn't hold my breath either. In fact, Marisha has played just as many of Matt's homebrews as Taliesin has. Which is one.
@@utes5532 Percy was a full homebrew conversion of the pathfinder gunslinger to 5E and Molly was a blood hunter which was a homebrew class made by Matt. If memory serves well their home game was Pathfinder but switched to 5E when they started airing the episodes and the blood hunter was created orginally for Vin Diesel in the CelebriDnD episode.

We couldn’t get to watch VM introduce their characters and honestly watching M9 introduce theirs was so fucking exciting. Especially when you can tell they don’t know what the others’ characters are. Them doing introductions in a different accent always makes me giddy
All I can say is I'm excited to see what they'll play though I will say I pray and Hope that Travis plays an intelligence base character or a character that's different than the norm he's played a tank he's played a pseudotank caster that mostly is that range I would love to see him play just a straight-up bookworm or something along the lines like maybe an artificer or a wizard of some kind would be dope or better yet a blade singer

I'm very glad about the decision about the last Thursday of each month. It gives people time to catch up, and I think Matt definitely deserves some relax as well
I have a very hard time sitting through the long episodes, so I will still be slower than most watchers. BUT I think i'll be able to watch my shorter segments more easily when there's 1 week there won't be a new episode & hopefully stay relatively caught up.

Yeah, I know he's an experienced DM and a brilliant one at that, but making a campaign for a show this huge must be stressful on a lot of levels. As a DM I get stressed about my campaign that anyone but a handful of friends will ever even experience, I couldn't fathom writing a campaign that millions of people are going to view and scrutinize

I can't relate to Matt's pain but prepping a campaign is stressfull even if you are a DM that just wings it like me. Cuz you still want some consistency in the world.
It reminds me about how G&S wanted to mess with things when the show started and they refused. Now it's their production company, they're on the other side of the equation, and there's no one to tell them no when they want to make things a little more corporate.

I usually run my campaign every other week on Sundays, I wish I could get behind the screen more often! But every week would be pretty rough

Sticking with the pre-recorded sessions sounds like a great idea. Most importantly, to me at least, it should help with attendance when a cast member can’t make it on a particular Thursday. Super excited!

Giving them time to rest in between episodes since it’s prerecorded is such a big relief. I know what happens when players aren’t getting enough sleep or when the DM isn’t getting enough sleep. Mental and physical health is always important.
I really don't mind the pre recording at all but I'm happy that it looks like the players get to sit at the same table again. Just so much cozier! Hopefully not too much will change but I guess I have to wait and see. I'm really excited that's for sure.
I absolutely agree! I totally support the reasons they had to be social distanced, and the digital content has been great fun but you can tell how much they missed being seated properly together. Also *whispers* is that a Wyrmwood table?
The pre recording isn’t bad but you could tell when they were recording too much and were burnt out and then the next episode everyone is rusty from taking a month off.
@@OmegaII Matt has definitely mentioned before that Travis has the perfect intimidating energy when he/the company needs to stand their ground but is still a teddy bear any other time.
The show being pre-recorded means each cast member will have their own HD cam for juicy reaction shots without being pixelated. The show being pre-recorded also means that guests can play at a "normal" time and not 7 at night.
@@michaelclark4344 but for guests to join, if a game ends at 11pm and they have work possibly at 5 am on set call times thats restrictive, this is a better workflow. The guests that worked out the best for more one session, in my opinion, weren't actors (voice, stage, tv, or movies) but authors, online personalities, or other dnd personalities (game dev, dm, content creator) etc. Critical Role is a business. Its easier to help that business with less late night hours.
@@Jerseyangel89 Mhmm, we can't ignore the convenience of being able to swing the shooting schedule around to fit peeps you want to bring in. When it comes to actors, especially, call times and schedules for the next day might not even be released till late the night before, so good luck if you get out of the session and realise you need to be at work in 5 hours.
Not just guests, for them too. Would be tough for those with kids to keep coming home after midnight one night a week, especially for Travis and Laura since it's both of them.
I will miss the art reels in the breaks. They showed a lot of community and were a nice way to see people's different interpretations of scenes. However, I am certain this was changed for a good reason (probably spoiler related or something) and it wont take enjoyment away from my experience
I'm sad, too. Believe it or not, the fan art was part of why I started watching. I loved looking for my favorite artist's interpretation of events. I never skipped one. Oh well, we don't always get what we want.
I have a feeling about why they're removing Art Reels. First off, those are a lot of work to put together, especially since everyone is still working from home, probably. Secondly, they probably have more stuff than ever to promote, like with the launch of the Critical Role Foundation last year and the big thing for the upcoming year: The Legend of Vox Machina. I also have a feeling they might have something big coming that's going to take a lot of marketing. I don't believe they would just gut the Art Reels for no reason.
@@ForeverDegenerate they also have a specific art style that they'll want for things like an official series, so it's better if the audience doesn't get too attached to anything that takes a while to draw.
I just can't wait to meet Taliesin's new character. Percy, Molly, Cad; his are consistently my favorite and I'm really looking forward to what he's dreamed up this time.
Definitely going to miss the art reel, especially since the music during C2 was absolutely amazing, it was a great combo with so much truly epic artwork.
The music was super important because I used to watch each art reel in the beginning until they changed the music and I found myself skipping the reels from then on..
I'm guessing Matt basically has a staff to help him with some aspects of his games, but consistently rolling out bangers every week was inhuman. I suppose he deserves a break from the DnD dungeon once each month.
When asked on Twitter he said he did all the campaign writing and prep by himself. Idk if that has changed since he posted that either way the man is a legend

@@ramondelgado4927 the main thing is that it's his full time job. Don't get me wrong he's great, but he's literally paid to not go to work and to think about DMing every day. Combined with his decades of experience it's the perfect storm to allow him to perfect his art... Also he can literally a) watch back his own improvised descriptions b) check in with the lore master and the hardcore community to verify every fact instead of forgetting them. He's very lucky to be in that position, but he's definitely earned it, listening to the others talk about the home game and their first sessions with him, they were just as blown away, and that's been the glue to the whole thing.
Hey, for those worried, our beloved Matt said (on Twitter) he'll still DM this campaign, the "mix things up" seems to be related to some storytelling and content elements. I'm really excited!
I took this as something more along the lines of the occasional guest GM... Obviously I could be wrong and i'm not sure how this would work exactly. But I guess we'll find out soon enough!
If the last Thursday of each month is bringing in experienced guest DMs for an evolving EXU, that could be fun: people like Brennan Lee Mulligan, Dael Kingsmill, Matt Colville, and Mark Hulmes taking the players through different corners of Exandria. Let each DM use their own style, but challenge them to resolve the plot hooks the last DM left hanging in a satisfying way.
May be a side video series that tags along and allows friends and fellow dms to flesh out pieced of lore with fresh tastes? Like a bit of live artistic liberty shared amongst the community
In my campaign, the 2 year old son of one of the players is playing a 2 year old gnome, son of his father's character. He mainly likes to roll his giant (choke safe) dice, claiming that he got a 5 on every roll. Sometimes he actually rolls on the table, but mostly he is throwing on the floor. He also likes to mimic my strange sound effects and weird voices. He really enjoys playing, is able to sit at the table for more than an hour straight, and was very sad when he couldn't partake in our game a few weeks ago. Even babies have scheduling issues.
@@japphan In my home game, the two year olds rolled the dice for their parents. Now those same two year olds are college graduates, and gaming at the same table with the rest of us...
Yeah if you looked at pictures of him at the beginning of the campaign and the end of the campaign, it looked like he aged twenty years. He looks better now though. I hope they get better work life balances going.

Some people are getting salty that they are actively making money from peoples fan art, and with the new T&C about fan art and production regarding Crit Role, it's best for them to not show them.
Yeah, it's totally about people getting salty (even though all the artists have to give consent in the first place)...and that it's so much work to produce....and that the cast don't want spoilers (even though the reel could be placed at the end of the show)....and the youtube metrics (approximately 15 minutes of a 2 - 4 hour video). It's all of that....And the ads. You don't actually need to have an interval in a pre-recorded show. I'm not judging them for it, and I can't wait for C3 to start, but let's all just see it for what it is.
The pre stream fanart showcase was huge a service to the community, it's such a shame to see it go. I never got a chance to submit any art for it myself, but I always looked forward to seeing it before every show. I missed it during EXU, and I know I'll miss it during campaign 3. I know it can still be viewed on the website and all but a lot less people are gonna go and view it there. To me, showcasing it like they did made me feel like they cared deeply for all the artists of the community. I hope it comes back sometime.
for someone who is late to CR and watching everthing on replay, i think it's cool to see the community work. but I see sometime the fan art kind spoiler the C1 story for me (sorry I skiped C1 because I want to catch up on C2). If they do end up putting it back in the video I would prefer it to be in the end of the video. or only put them in talks with Brian W. Foster.
I think the fan art should be kept in, even if its a weekly top 50 thing, with votes on socials (forum, reddit, twitch, ect). I was one who just skipped through the fan art and 'got to the point' but found myself drawn to the art, and now atch it through, it was also the only reason I engaged online with other critters, I am looking forward to the new season though,
I’m so damn excited for this but I really hope that new storytellers means more guest players like in campaign 2 or more one shots with guest dms. Matt has such a talent for weaving the narrative in a way that makes you want to watch a 5 hour video and I think a different dm in the main story would sort of kill the vibe.
100% agreed it won’t feel like a proper adventure if they change dms constantly in the same campaign it will be hard to get invested into the story if the style of dm shifts constantly killing the cohesiveness of the story arks and characters since no one can really match Matt’s voices. Not to mention since everyone has their own DMing style the tone shifts can really destroy any sense of it being a campaign and make it feel like a bunch of disconnected one shots
Agree. I would love to see other DMs take a shot at Exandria as a one shot. Just a thought, they’ll probably dedicate one shots for the end of the month so Matt can get a break. That would be cool too.
I’m rather sad about the fan art segments in streams, that was one of my favorite and most art-block relieving parts since I’m not on Twitter or Facebook
I really like the fan art, but I would always skip past the segment where possible (if rewatching). Maybe with the video analytics they noticed that the fan art segment wasn't actually being watched except for the live viewing.
I loved the intermission fan art too - time to get a drink, listen to the music, ponder what just happened and be blown away by all of the amazing art...sometimes I'd watch the intermission a couple of times...even though I'm routinely behind, I'd never dream of missing them...

Definitely. As much as I love all the Critical Role has to offer, it started as a group of nerdy ass friends hanging out and playing D&D - if it feels too much like a business, it's died a death. I've seen too many beloved content creators fall into that trap.
Yeah, it went from a group of people playing DND for fun to a literal business, less fun and more of job. I’m sure they still have fun when playing but there’s added pressure to live up to now.
As happy as I am about a new campaign, and one based in a desert no less, I’m disappointed the art reel is gone. That was a genuinely nice thing to do for the fans, and while I personally never cared too much about it, I can imagine how awesome it was to spend so much time and effort after being inspired, to then be shown the result by what inspired it. I don’t understand why they’re removing it
i think sometimes it cooks up drama and the artists are harassed, that or they want more time for ads or something like that during the break. I'm ok with it, there's always the fanart reel on the website
They are probably going to batch record all the episodes in the first week of the month and then release them over the next 4-6 weeks. That way it's easier to schedule recordings. This means that unless they want to wait to edit the broadcasts live every Friday to reflect the new art, they're going to be hands off and not working for most of the month going forward.
To fit in commercials :/ Every season gets larger and more expensive with more of a production team. This went from a fun side gig to their full time jobs. I don't have a problem with it, they need to do what they need to do, I just wish announcements weren't always about "handling" fans, presenting it as though its a good thing. I far prefer when people just honestly say "sorry I'm going to run commercials because I need the money". Most of the time I skip ads on youtube, but I often don't on twitch, simply because of the notification that says "watching this ad supports the streamer".
@@BakerPeter That's a super big assumption. These people have busy lives so to assume they can all take a week's worth of evening's off in a row is kind of funny. Also how would that be easier to schedule by cramming it all in one week?
The potential “new storytellers” probably just refers to more one shots and stuff like EXU but I definitely imagined our new adventurers doing plane-shifting shenanigans and each otherworldly plane having a different DM to reflect the madness of that dimension.
Okay… I don’t like the idea of other DMs really in the main campaign, but this would actually be a good idea for it and I would find it really cool and intriguing.
I mean sure it would be cool but honestly, I watch this show to see Matt DM anyone else kind of kills it for me. One-shots would be totally fine but I hope for the actual campaign that Matt does 95% of the DMing.
I think having it be recorded is honestly GREAT for them and for us viewers too; it gives them time to subtitle the whole episode for people with hearing difficulties AND for foreigners such as myself. I always tell my friends about CR, but most of them don’t speak English at all.
@@luissmith9092 yeah, Matt describes things in intricate detail and has a lot of interactiveness with his sessions, and Brennan practically makes a whole theater production when he DMs. They are god-tier when it comes to being a Dungeon Master.
D20 native here, I absolutely would love to see Brennan guest on Critical Roll (especially after having Matt for a couple of seasons over in D20 land)! I have yet to see a group he doesn't mesh well with, and I'd be absolutely delighted to see what roleplay and combat gifts he'd bring to any episode he's in!

Also to be honest, it can be hard to always get a game in at the game time every week especially when you have you know kids, with the pandemic baby sitting I imagine is harder as well, it likely makes it easier on all of them if they can schedule a time for filming which fits around other people in the family's schedule as well.
I get why people are bummed about the fanart reel loss (and I'll miss it too), but its days were always numbered. It's a huge time sink each week, and becomes a bigger and bigger IP and copyright hassle on a number of levels. This way, they can still spotlight the fan art on the website and on social media, and curate what they want to include in the continued publications and collections as well. But otherwise it was turning into a problem for multiple legal reasons and I respect why it had to go.
Agreed. And the constant art of past streams . it makes more sense like you said to group them in a book and spread some talented artist to have to look at when ever you want .
One of the most exciting things about that set preview for me was that the chairs are next to each other! Very excited for things to be safe enough to have the cast actually next to each other!
For real, the cross talk and whispers were fun; bless the clippers who try to subtitle cool moments from the past of that. OH. And if you haven't watched this show with subtitles on, you're missing out; the folks they got doing them are a gem and very self-aware.

You have to be kidding me. Literally weeks after I start really getting into D&D and Critical Role announce a fresh campaign. This could not be more perfect!
I'm glad they decided to have a Thursday off a month. Can't have been an easy decision to make for fear of disappointing viewers. They have done this consistently for a long time. Third time around, they owe it to themselves to take things at a comfortable pace, knowing what works best from experience, and with the show soon coming out and everything else. Burnout and overworking won't make anyone happy. I think it's also important to take to heart what they said about expectations. I've seen so many posts where people make predictions and voice their hopes for campaign 3 and such, hoping Liam plays class X and Laura Class Y and that the campaign takes place in Z. No harm in doing that of course, I've speculated a bit myself, but I genuinely hope people don't jump into watching the new campaign with dead-set hope on classes, characters, setting etc. (they can't pick every class, after all). There's no way of telling what an alternative would have been like, and there is no point in making oneself disappointed over self generated expectations.
I mainly just hope someone will play a fighter or paladin as a main class because no one ever did it yet in the main campaign, and we have seen a barbarian as the party tank twice now so it could be fun to see another class in that role which does not rely on rage.
I think there will be some darker elements but not the campaign as a whole. Based on what we know about marquet i bet there will be plenty of illegal underground businesses

I really appreciate how much the cast of critical role respect there audience by trying to remain as forthright and clear as possible to us. Cant wait for the new campaign and what Liam's next character will be too.

Not me. Very disappointed of that. It's prerecorded like they said, so they can take breaks. I feel they need more breaks because they're running a huge corporation now, and not because they play too much D&D too fast. The whole thing feels very corporate with this video, the new set that seems to have taken so much time, energy and money that there's gonna be a "making of" video. Hope they don't depart from their roots: playing D&D with friends and having a blast doing it, without fear of making mistakes, being boring or not interesting to watch.
@@basseon Being pre-recorded does not mean they can take week long breaks. It also doesn't mean it'll be easier for us to get a show every week. It's actually very hard to produce quality streams week after week. Also, it's unlikely that' they'd play multiple times a week. You gotta remember that there's a lot more people involved than just the main cast of 8, and streaming sessions is not all that they do. Actually, all this means that they wanna keep to their roots. They wanna have fun together without fear of having to deliver high quality content on a demanding schedule and they're taking into account changing life circumstance WHILE running a multi-media business with multiple side branches.
@@miowner I'm not watching for free but it does not matter. When was the last time Matt Dmed a game? Months ago... there's gonna be a a 1st episode Oct. 21th, then no episode, then 3 in a row, another break, then 3 in a row and boom Christmas vacations. So in the next 3 months and half we're only gonna have like 6 episodes. That's disappointing to me.
The "different storytellers" angle isn't anything new, we just didn't get to see it in C2...If you remember the C2 wrap episode Matt said that Matt Coville had written all of the background on the Augen Trust and was supposed to guest when the players delved into that...they just never did. So it's something Mercer has attempted before it just never saw the light of day.

Aabria wasn't...good...in EXU (I just don't think 5e suited her along with other issues) but she'd be the perfect fit for running a once a month Monster of the Week or other Powered by the Apocalypse game campaign.
By the looks of it they will be at the same table once again so that makes things really Exciting! I’m glad the group won’t be denied physical space with one another and so the story will have more of that good old fashioned DnD vibes we all love.
Yeah and while they still acted like kids, which I love, sometimes when separated, now they are back together LOL. So we should be in for a lot of random fun moments again
A little disappointed they won’t be featuring art in the episodes any longer. As an artist, I always loved to watch those and wanted to get something featured there. Other than that though I’m so hyped!
I can understand why they'd do that. With it being pre-recorded, there's no reason to have the long intermission. And with it being a new campaign, there'd be no fan art at the beginning anyway, so making a new show just to show them off seems a fair compromise. If they ever switch back to live broadcasts again, I'd hope they bring it back.
I was honestly expecting that they'd wait until 2022 to announce anything, so I'm pleasantly surprised. I always love the beginnings of campaigns, when PCs can't just teleport everywhere, and polymorph or banish any potential threat.
The good thing about epic arcs is that they serve as release of tension and kind of feel like the thing that the characters deserve, save everything they fought for, but indeed it gets kinda boring if it doesn’t have that feeling of connection with the characters. @@timelessadventurer Matt has said in the past that he prefers games that don't go to max level for that very reason. A lot of tension goes away when you can just instantly teleport to where ever you need to go.
Vecna arc was my favourite of C1 and I'm still disappointed we didn't get to T4 in C2. Doing things with big stakes and big monsters. Fighting kobolds and gnolls gets real boring
I'm going to miss the art intermission, but I am incredibly happy to hear that they are willing to risk evolution in the face of overwhelming success. If anyone is annoyed at the changes, give change a chance. CR has earned our patience
I'm just wondering what could replace them as filler and nothing comes to mind (other than a couple commercials which CR has always had too). Maybe they are just cutting the break out of the stream since it won't be live anyway during the pandemic. That would help shorted the stream/vod slightly.

Absolutely!! I'll miss it as well, but change is rarely bad. You just have to give it a chance. And I'm sure the intermissions will be filled with something equally cool. Or they may just be doing it so they audience have an actual break as well. I know personally I hated to walk away for snack or drink, and miss a piece of art....😁. So now we just go to the fan art reel on the site every morning before the show airs that evening.

Not gonna lie, I always skipped fan art section, cause it's not really my thing and I wasn't watching/listening in real-time, but to me it seems a bit off to remove fan art, I think it was a good way of saying "thank you" to the community.

Some issues with legality and IP stuff came up recently and they have to protect themselves from getting wrongfully sued It’s just a situation of a small number of bad apples intentionally ruining it for everyone else

@@TheMrVengeance look up opal stolen and you’ll find a little info on it, effectively they did not have a fully announced IP before just recently so they didn’t have it all officially fully copyrighted (idk why) (look up critical role IP, and there was an issue where the character opal was accused of being stolen by another smaller creator who is apart of a different twitch dnd group that is significantly smaller and the reason they accused them of stealing it is that the characters were both named opal and had opal hair and an opal necklace, she publicly accused them of this and threatened legal action if they didn’t either get rid of the character or (and this is ridiculous) they publicly say she was the creator and announce that her dnd campaign takes place in the same world as the critical role campaign however, they basically ignored her and put in to fully tighten their IP later that month and the person was effectively crushed by the community saying they were ridiculous and going after them

I don't feel that at all. I wing 90% of my content, all my prep is done before the campaign even starts.
The only thing I need to take into account is the party's reputation with the npcs they interact with, and where everything is in the world, and those notes happen during the session.
As long as my notes are organized, which *has* been an issue once or twice, the game goes smoothly. I roll my random encounters at the table and just whip out a battle mat from a stack of pre-drawn sheets when needed.
Remember guys, you don't need to have Mercer's insane set pieces. Hell, you don't even need to paint your minis. If everyone is having fun, you're doing your job correctly.

I've been running Curse of Strahd, and even if everything is laid out for you, there is a LOT of cross referencing things in the book because of its rather shitty layout. Well, that isn't fair, it isn't their fault, it's whoever decided that campaign books should be separated by location and that room descriptions should be in some geometrical order. "There are four doors, two to the north, and two to the south." "Okay, we go through the south door on the left." "Okay, let me flip two pages ahead and remind myself of that trap DC and then immediately flip back to a different page because I know one of you fuckers is gonna go a different direction"

If memory serves well their home game was Pathfinder but switched to 5E when they started airing the episodes and the blood hunter was created orginally for Vin Diesel in the CelebriDnD episode.

Best part of campaign 2 tbh. I enjoyed the campaign. But the introduction is magic.
We couldn’t get to watch VM introduce their characters and honestly watching M9 introduce theirs was so fucking exciting. Especially when you can tell they don’t know what the others’ characters are. Them doing introductions in a different accent always makes me giddy
All I can say is I'm excited to see what they'll play though I will say I pray and Hope that Travis plays an intelligence base character or a character that's different than the norm he's played a tank he's played a pseudotank caster that mostly is that range I would love to see him play just a straight-up bookworm or something along the lines like maybe an artificer or a wizard of some kind would be dope or better yet a blade singer

Yeah, I know he's an experienced DM and a brilliant one at that, but making a campaign for a show this huge must be stressful on a lot of levels. As a DM I get stressed about my campaign that anyone but a handful of friends will ever even experience, I couldn't fathom writing a campaign that millions of people are going to view and scrutinize

I can't relate to Matt's pain but prepping a campaign is stressfull even if you are a DM that just wings it like me. Cuz you still want some consistency in the world.
Aw, I'm going to miss the fan art reels. I felt so sentimental about them, they honestly even made me cry post-episode a few times.
It reminds me about how G&S wanted to mess with things when the show started and they refused. Now it's their production company, they're on the other side of the equation, and there's no one to tell them no when they want to make things a little more corporate.

Sounds like a positive change that will make it much easier on the cast/ and can help prevent weird technical difficulties that arise when having live only content
Giving them time to rest in between episodes since it’s prerecorded is such a big relief. I know what happens when players aren’t getting enough sleep or when the DM isn’t getting enough sleep. Mental and physical health is always important.
I really don't mind the pre recording at all but I'm happy that it looks like the players get to sit at the same table again. Just so much cozier! Hopefully not too much will change but I guess I have to wait and see. I'm really excited that's for sure.

The show being pre-recorded means each cast member will have their own HD cam for juicy reaction shots without being pixelated. The show being pre-recorded also means that guests can play at a "normal" time and not 7 at night.

@@michaelclark4344 but for guests to join, if a game ends at 11pm and they have work possibly at 5 am on set call times thats restrictive, this is a better workflow. The guests that worked out the best for more one session, in my opinion, weren't actors (voice, stage, tv, or movies) but authors, online personalities, or other dnd personalities (game dev, dm, content creator) etc. Critical Role is a business. Its easier to help that business with less late night hours.
@@Jerseyangel89 Mhmm, we can't ignore the convenience of being able to swing the shooting schedule around to fit peeps you want to bring in. When it comes to actors, especially, call times and schedules for the next day might not even be released till late the night before, so good luck if you get out of the session and realise you need to be at work in 5 hours.
Not just guests, for them too. Would be tough for those with kids to keep coming home after midnight one night a week, especially for Travis and Laura since it's both of them.
I will miss the art reels in the breaks. They showed a lot of community and were a nice way to see people's different interpretations of scenes. However, I am certain this was changed for a good reason (probably spoiler related or something) and it wont take enjoyment away from my experience

I'm sad, too. Believe it or not, the fan art was part of why I started watching. I loved looking for my favorite artist's interpretation of events. I never skipped one. Oh well, we don't always get what we want.

I have a feeling about why they're removing Art Reels. First off, those are a lot of work to put together, especially since everyone is still working from home, probably. Secondly, they probably have more stuff than ever to promote, like with the launch of the Critical Role Foundation last year and the big thing for the upcoming year: The Legend of Vox Machina. I also have a feeling they might have something big coming that's going to take a lot of marketing. I don't believe they would just gut the Art Reels for no reason.

I'm guessing Matt basically has a staff to help him with some aspects of his games, but consistently rolling out bangers every week was inhuman. I suppose he deserves a break from the DnD dungeon once each month.
When asked on Twitter he said he did all the campaign writing and prep by himself. Idk if that has changed since he posted that either way the man is a legend

Don't get me wrong he's great, but he's literally paid to not go to work and to think about DMing every day.
Combined with his decades of experience it's the perfect storm to allow him to perfect his art... Also he can literally a) watch back his own improvised descriptions b) check in with the lore master and the hardcore community to verify every fact instead of forgetting them.
He's very lucky to be in that position, but he's definitely earned it, listening to the others talk about the home game and their first sessions with him, they were just as blown away, and that's been the glue to the whole thing.
Hey, for those worried, our beloved Matt said (on Twitter) he'll still DM this campaign, the "mix things up" seems to be related to some storytelling and content elements. I'm really excited!
I took this as something more along the lines of the occasional guest GM... Obviously I could be wrong and i'm not sure how this would work exactly. But I guess we'll find out soon enough!

Let each DM use their own style, but challenge them to resolve the plot hooks the last DM left hanging in a satisfying way.
May be a side video series that tags along and allows friends and fellow dms to flesh out pieced of lore with fresh tastes? Like a bit of live artistic liberty shared amongst the community

In my campaign, the 2 year old son of one of the players is playing a 2 year old gnome, son of his father's character.
He mainly likes to roll his giant (choke safe) dice, claiming that he got a 5 on every roll. Sometimes he actually rolls on the table, but mostly he is throwing on the floor. He also likes to mimic my strange sound effects and weird voices.
He really enjoys playing, is able to sit at the table for more than an hour straight, and was very sad when he couldn't partake in our game a few weeks ago.
Even babies have scheduling issues.

Some people are getting salty that they are actively making money from peoples fan art, and with the new T&C about fan art and production regarding Crit Role, it's best for them to not show them.
Yeah, it's totally about people getting salty (even though all the artists have to give consent in the first place)...and that it's so much work to produce....and that the cast don't want spoilers (even though the reel could be placed at the end of the show)....and the youtube metrics (approximately 15 minutes of a 2 - 4 hour video). It's all of that....And the ads. You don't actually need to have an interval in a pre-recorded show. I'm not judging them for it, and I can't wait for C3 to start, but let's all just see it for what it is.
I feel like it's inevitable that at some point Travis is going to play a dragonborn.

The pre stream fanart showcase was huge a service to the community, it's such a shame to see it go. I never got a chance to submit any art for it myself, but I always looked forward to seeing it before every show. I missed it during EXU, and I know I'll miss it during campaign 3. I know it can still be viewed on the website and all but a lot less people are gonna go and view it there. To me, showcasing it like they did made me feel like they cared deeply for all the artists of the community. I hope it comes back sometime.

for someone who is late to CR and watching everthing on replay, i think it's cool to see the community work. but I see sometime the fan art kind spoiler the C1 story for me (sorry I skiped C1 because I want to catch up on C2). If they do end up putting it back in the video I would prefer it to be in the end of the video. or only put them in talks with Brian W. Foster.

I’m so damn excited for this but I really hope that new storytellers means more guest players like in campaign 2 or more one shots with guest dms. Matt has such a talent for weaving the narrative in a way that makes you want to watch a 5 hour video and I think a different dm in the main story would sort of kill the vibe.
100% agreed it won’t feel like a proper adventure if they change dms constantly in the same campaign it will be hard to get invested into the story if the style of dm shifts constantly killing the cohesiveness of the story arks and characters since no one can really match Matt’s voices. Not to mention since everyone has their own DMing style the tone shifts can really destroy any sense of it being a campaign and make it feel like a bunch of disconnected one shots

I really like the fan art, but I would always skip past the segment where possible (if rewatching). Maybe with the video analytics they noticed that the fan art segment wasn't actually being watched except for the live viewing.

Definitely. As much as I love all the Critical Role has to offer, it started as a group of nerdy ass friends hanging out and playing D&D - if it feels too much like a business, it's died a death. I've seen too many beloved content creators fall into that trap.

As happy as I am about a new campaign, and one based in a desert no less, I’m disappointed the art reel is gone. That was a genuinely nice thing to do for the fans, and while I personally never cared too much about it, I can imagine how awesome it was to spend so much time and effort after being inspired, to then be shown the result by what inspired it. I don’t understand why they’re removing it
i think sometimes it cooks up drama and the artists are harassed, that or they want more time for ads or something like that during the break. I'm ok with it, there's always the fanart reel on the website
They are probably going to batch record all the episodes in the first week of the month and then release them over the next 4-6 weeks. That way it's easier to schedule recordings. This means that unless they want to wait to edit the broadcasts live every Friday to reflect the new art, they're going to be hands off and not working for most of the month going forward.
To fit in commercials :/ Every season gets larger and more expensive with more of a production team. This went from a fun side gig to their full time jobs. I don't have a problem with it, they need to do what they need to do, I just wish announcements weren't always about "handling" fans, presenting it as though its a good thing. I far prefer when people just honestly say "sorry I'm going to run commercials because I need the money". Most of the time I skip ads on youtube, but I often don't on twitch, simply because of the notification that says "watching this ad supports the streamer".

The potential “new storytellers” probably just refers to more one shots and stuff like EXU but I definitely imagined our new adventurers doing plane-shifting shenanigans and each otherworldly plane having a different DM to reflect the madness of that dimension.
They could be one shots of the guest characters and other new adventurers.

I mean sure it would be cool but honestly, I watch this show to see Matt DM anyone else kind of kills it for me. One-shots would be totally fine but I hope for the actual campaign that Matt does 95% of the DMing.
I think having it be recorded is honestly GREAT for them and for us viewers too; it gives them time to subtitle the whole episode for people with hearing difficulties AND for foreigners such as myself. I always tell my friends about CR, but most of them don’t speak English at all.
Really hope Brennan Lee Mulligan guest stars at some point after all the collabs on the D20 channel. Love him and Matt's dynamic.

@@luissmith9092 yeah, Matt describes things in intricate detail and has a lot of interactiveness with his sessions, and Brennan practically makes a whole theater production when he DMs. They are god-tier when it comes to being a Dungeon Master.
D20 native here, I absolutely would love to see Brennan guest on Critical Roll (especially after having Matt for a couple of seasons over in D20 land)! I have yet to see a group he doesn't mesh well with, and I'd be absolutely delighted to see what roleplay and combat gifts he'd bring to any episode he's in!

Also to be honest, it can be hard to always get a game in at the game time every week especially when you have you know kids, with the pandemic baby sitting I imagine is harder as well, it likely makes it easier on all of them if they can schedule a time for filming which fits around other people in the family's schedule as well.

I get why people are bummed about the fanart reel loss (and I'll miss it too), but its days were always numbered. It's a huge time sink each week, and becomes a bigger and bigger IP and copyright hassle on a number of levels. This way, they can still spotlight the fan art on the website and on social media, and curate what they want to include in the continued publications and collections as well. But otherwise it was turning into a problem for multiple legal reasons and I respect why it had to go.
Finally, a sensible take on the art reel 'issue'.

I'm glad they decided to have a Thursday off a month. Can't have been an easy decision to make for fear of disappointing viewers. They have done this consistently for a long time. Third time around, they owe it to themselves to take things at a comfortable pace, knowing what works best from experience, and with the show soon coming out and everything else. Burnout and overworking won't make anyone happy.
I think it's also important to take to heart what they said about expectations. I've seen so many posts where people make predictions and voice their hopes for campaign 3 and such, hoping Liam plays class X and Laura Class Y and that the campaign takes place in Z. No harm in doing that of course, I've speculated a bit myself, but I genuinely hope people don't jump into watching the new campaign with dead-set hope on classes, characters, setting etc. (they can't pick every class, after all). There's no way of telling what an alternative would have been like, and there is no point in making oneself disappointed over self generated expectations.
I mainly just hope someone will play a fighter or paladin as a main class because no one ever did it yet in the main campaign, and we have seen a barbarian as the party tank twice now so it could be fun to see another class in that role which does not rely on rage.

I really appreciate how much the cast of critical role respect there audience by trying to remain as forthright and clear as possible to us. Cant wait for the new campaign and what Liam's next character will be too.

Not me. Very disappointed of that. It's prerecorded like they said, so they can take breaks. I feel they need more breaks because they're running a huge corporation now, and not because they play too much D&D too fast.
The whole thing feels very corporate with this video, the new set that seems to have taken so much time, energy and money that there's gonna be a "making of" video.
Hope they don't depart from their roots: playing D&D with friends and having a blast doing it, without fear of making mistakes, being boring or not interesting to watch.
@@basseon Being pre-recorded does not mean they can take week long breaks. It also doesn't mean it'll be easier for us to get a show every week. It's actually very hard to produce quality streams week after week. Also, it's unlikely that' they'd play multiple times a week. You gotta remember that there's a lot more people involved than just the main cast of 8, and streaming sessions is not all that they do.
Actually, all this means that they wanna keep to their roots. They wanna have fun together without fear of having to deliver high quality content on a demanding schedule and they're taking into account changing life circumstance WHILE running a multi-media business with multiple side branches.
@@miowner I'm not watching for free but it does not matter. When was the last time Matt Dmed a game? Months ago... there's gonna be a a 1st episode Oct. 21th, then no episode, then 3 in a row, another break, then 3 in a row and boom Christmas vacations. So in the next 3 months and half we're only gonna have like 6 episodes. That's disappointing to me.
The "different storytellers" angle isn't anything new, we just didn't get to see it in C2...If you remember the C2 wrap episode Matt said that Matt Coville had written all of the background on the Augen Trust and was supposed to guest when the players delved into that...they just never did. So it's something Mercer has attempted before it just never saw the light of day.

I can understand why they'd do that. With it being pre-recorded, there's no reason to have the long intermission. And with it being a new campaign, there'd be no fan art at the beginning anyway, so making a new show just to show them off seems a fair compromise. I was honestly expecting that they'd wait until 2022 to announce anything, so I'm pleasantly surprised. I always love the beginnings of campaigns, when PCs can't just teleport everywhere, and polymorph or banish any potential threat.
Yes same! Sometimes the too epic actions can be a bit much!
The good thing about epic arcs is that they serve as release of tension and kind of feel like the thing that the characters deserve, save everything they fought for, but indeed it gets kinda boring if it doesn’t have that feeling of connection with the characters. @@timelessadventurer Matt has said in the past that he prefers games that don't go to max level for that very reason. A lot of tension goes away when you can just instantly teleport to where ever you need to go.

Vecna arc was my favourite of C1 and I'm still disappointed we didn't get to T4 in C2. Doing things with big stakes and big monsters. Fighting kobolds and gnolls gets real boring

I did love the art reels too, and its very sad to see them go. But it isnt the end of the world so its whatever
I'm just wondering what could replace them as filler and nothing comes to mind (other than a couple commercials which CR has always had too). Maybe they are just cutting the break out of the stream since it won't be live anyway during the pandemic. That would help shorted the stream/vod slightly.
@@zane4218 That sounds like the obvious reason tbh. If they're pre-recording for the foreseeable future, there's no point having the art reels.
@@zane4218 Yeah this makes sense. Just have a shorter commercial add break like we normally see, maybe some of the 'ooh here's the pretty campaign commission art for a few moments of everyone's PCs' and then bam back from ad/intermission.
Absolutely!! I'll miss it as well, but change is rarely bad. You just have to give it a chance. And I'm sure the intermissions will be filled with something equally cool. Or they may just be doing it so they audience have an actual break as well. I know personally I hated to walk away for snack or drink, and miss a piece of art....😁. So now we just go to the fan art reel on the site every morning before the show airs that evening.

Not gonna lie, I always skipped fan art section, cause it's not really my thing and I wasn't watching/listening in real-time, but to me it seems a bit off to remove fan art, I think it was a good way of saying "thank you" to the community.
It became a source of issues sadly. Some complained about other people's artistic interpretations.

Some issues with legality and IP stuff came up recently and they have to protect themselves from getting wrongfully sued

@@davidhoward2711 Wait, what? How? Crit role and their characters are their own IP, and they only show art with permission from the artist. Plus they're still going to show case art, just not as a stream segment. When/where/how was this "almost getting sued thing"? Sources?
@@TheMrVengeance look up opal stolen and you’ll find a little info on it, effectively they did not have a fully announced IP before just recently so they didn’t have it all officially fully copyrighted (idk why) (look up critical role IP, and there was an issue where the character opal was accused of being stolen by another smaller creator who is apart of a different twitch dnd group that is significantly smaller and the reason they accused them of stealing it is that the characters were both named opal and had opal hair and an opal necklace, she publicly accused them of this and threatened legal action if they didn’t either get rid of the character or (and this is ridiculous) they publicly say she was the creator and announce that her dnd campaign takes place in the same world as the critical role campaign however, they basically ignored her and put in to fully tighten their IP later that month and the person was effectively crushed by the community saying they were ridiculous and going after them
