Dark Souls 2 Lore: Nashandra The Prisoner of Desire

  • This Dark Souls 2 Lore video primarily covers the Origin and happenings of Queen Nashandra of Drangleic and her interactions with King Vendrick and the Cursed Undead. Some of the lore chosen is speculation, some is not. The Legends of Drangleic Dark Souls Lore videos series also tend to attempt to enter the psyche of the character the video is focusing on; imagining the Lore of Drangleic from their perspective. So if some of the lore seems inaccurate it may be due to the fact that it IS false because the subject of the video (Nashandra in this case) is misinformed or does not know the whole truth.

    ADDITIONAL LORE INFORMATION PERTAINING TO THIS VIDEO:
    These are many of the item descriptions that led me to say what I say in the video:
    Bow of Want
    A bow created from the soul of Nashandra. The old one of the Abyss was reborn in death, split into miniscule fragments, and spread across the land. The smallest of the pieces, sensing its own fragility, yearned for what it lacked.
    King's Ultra Greatsword:
    An ultra-greatsword forged from the soul of King Vendrick. Inflicts heavy damage on enemy armor.Only the King knows whether the depiction of the Queen is a resentful mockery,or an affectionate exaltation.
    King's Ring
    A powerful soul is like a curse. And Vendrick, King of Drangleic used a powerful soul to keep the curse at bay. King Vendrick sought greater souls, and made the giants' strength his own, but even still, the curse overcame him.
    Ancient Dragon Soul
    Soul of the great ancient dragon that stands magnificently, deep within the shrine. This powerful being stands and waits, for whoever may visit him.
    Use the dragon soul, created by those who peered into the essence of the soul, to acquire numerous souls, or to create something of great worth.
    The Ancient Dragon Soul says it was "Created by those who peered into the essence of the soul", from dialogue with Shanalotte, Chancellor Wellager and several others we know this is referring to Vendrick who created the dragon soul as it uses the exact same wording as they do when speaking of Vendrick "peering into the essence of the soul". We also know from the King's Ring that it states Vendrick used powerful souls and sought greater souls to keep the curse at bay. Creating Dragon's Souls was a means to do so.
    Thanks.

    i love the lore to DS2, and it seems that from software focused a lot of time into the lore of this game, it is so in depth and creates so much interest, it keeps you on edge the whole game, which is one of the big reasons why i play this game. i love your vids man, and i hope to see some more lore vids in the future.

    About time... I know. PLEASE up vote this comment so others read it.
    First I'd like you guys to check out ***** He helped me get some shots for the video that I'd otherwise not have gotten. He makes idiotic Dark Souls content, I mean that in the best kind of way. Check out Abyss Gravelord: th-cam.com/users/ShinenGaming
    Also, I normally wouldn't site item descriptions used or handhold with my lore at all, but since this is so early in the lifespan of the game, please check the video description for additional information.
    FINALLY AND MOST IMPORTANT:
    Leave requests for DS2 Lore. I know 4-5 characters/stories I currently have planned to cover for Legends of Drangleic, but I might like to do a few more. Leave your suggestion for the lore you'd REALLY love to see and if I get a lot of requests for a character I don't already have planned, I might do it.
    Thanks for watching and reading guys!!!

      Good job man! And I have some speculation about the giants. (maybe it's nothing new). I think they are a relatively new race in the world of dark souls. And their soul looks if a humanity is inside it, + there is no humanity in DS2 at all, that would explain why. If they born from humanity (somehow) than that would explain why Nashandr saw them as a threath. Because she (reincarnation/ fragment of Manus) is basically the creator of humanity (the item) and she can not regain her full power witouth collecting all the fragments.

Just whenever I play 3 and 1 all I can see is Berserk that it makes it feel unoriginal. However if you no nothing of Berserk then it does. Do you think, where the giants came from (to the north) in Dark Souls II is the same as the "Land of Giants" which is coincidently in the North from Demon's Souls, an arch stone which we cannot traverse? Just a thought.

  • @Xenos369
    @Xenos369 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    One big gripe i have with the story is how obvious the player is manipulated in their actions. DS1, the manipulation was very obscure and would be found by accident (or by being a dick and attacking the Goddess of Bewbs). I found that this was genius, however in DS2, I just couldnt digest the fact that this manipulation of the PC was very obvious. Kinda sucks for a series known for its subtle storytelling...

    seeing the manus fragments theory SCARES me to no end , and here is why:
    1- i hate how they turned manus into our main Villain
    2- fromsoft can take this theory and milk the franchise ( i hope not) by them basicly just saying that another fragment has reshaped. (adding with the light and dark cycle)
    also does this confirm that manus is the forgotten pygmy?

    • @g.ferreira6745
      @g.ferreira6745 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, even if From milks the franchise using this argument, they're not wrong at all
      This is what DS1 told us from the start, the cycle never ends, humanity never gave up, they never let the Fire to be extinguished

  • @thevengefulexecutioner6416

    So basically once the King knew about Nashandra's true intentions, he made a trial that is required to unlock the throne, and that trial is impossible for people like Nashandra to overcome. So after Vendrick's decent, Nashandra was like "Oh shitballs now it's impossible for me to take the true throne! Bah! Fuck it, I'll just sit here and dream about it"
    And then the Cursed Undead (CU) came, and due to the CU not knowing why he's/she's there, Nashandra was like "AHA! Another fool! Keh heh heh I'll make it do the dirty work for me, then I'll take the throne!" and then Nashadra successfully tricks us into overcoming the king's trial.
    After the CU faces the final challenge (Throne Watcher and Defender) he/she unlocks the throne and attempts to take it, but Nashandra comes in to complete her plan and back stabs the CU, trying to kill him/her so that she could take the throne for herself, but the CU kills Nashandra with a few hits and rules. (Aldia is whatever but he's a head so okay)
    So in summary, Nashandra is a good,for nothing whore backstabber and gold digger

      Essentially, just scary stories. But the reason tend to enjoy them, is because the terror articulated in the stories isn't any sort of sudden scare, but the kind of creepiness you think about in bed. If you'd like to see a really good example of a well articulated Creepy Pasta, check out a story called "Prey" that's read by MrCreepyPasta. And if you prefer reading the stories yourself, there's always content on actual Creepy Pasta forums.

    I kind of have this crazy theory about Nashandra that may be closer to false then to truth, but here we go!
    I think Nashandra had it all planned out, that one day a destined undead will fight the way to seek the king of Drangleic, only to find the queen waiting honourably for the undead. and like you said, she sent him on a quest to find king vendrick and the only thing he had to keep Nashandra away from the throne. Once you optained the Kings ring, she made sure you kept on the right path, to find the "true" throne and become the Sovereign of the land, and once you had gotten rid of the final barrier, she steps in to fulfill her part of her plan, she seemed easy to beat... Almost to easy to beat, and once she was beaten, it looks like she is doing one final spell. and also her final Words were "now be one with the dark" like she is urging the undead to either join her, or to do what must be done. This could mean that once the undead had killed her she would only create a mirrage of her own soul, a fake soul. and maybe she still exist somewhere in this forgotten land, waiting for the right moment to strike, and achieve what is rightfully hers!

    Oh man I have missed your style of lore-video! Looking from character's subjective perspectives is such an effective way of telling their story, and with your profoundly compelling voice and narration style doing the telling, along with your masterful editing, yours are some of the best Lore videos TH-cam has seen, IMO.
    Bravo on Nashandra, I like how you made this an almost direct sequel to your Manus lore video, keeping your canon consistent I see! Can't wait for more, I vote Gavlan gets a lore video from you. His story needs to be told!

      @TerraMantis  10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank YOU very much!
      You know I have to keep to what I believe is true, but at the same time I try to make the lore of DS2 as little about DS1 as possible. I only mention anyone from DS1 by their actual name if I believe the character would know it. In this case, Dusk was the only person I said by name because I feel like Nashandra would know that information.
      Also... I'd only be lying if I wasn't literally just talking to Dave about making a Gavlaan Lore video. Let's just say... he gets more and more drunk as the video goes on.

  • @sentimeter233
    @sentimeter233 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm not the biggest fan of DS2, but your take on the ending totally transformed my view of it. I find it really poetic how Nashandra "created" the Bearer of the Curse as nothing more than a means to an end, completely underestimating the strength and resolve of one lowly human... and in the end, that was her undoing. Great stuff!

  • @Reelyreed
    @Reelyreed 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nashandra doesn't really seem that evil... She never does anything evil other than attempt to fight you in the throne room... It seems like to me that the man experiments on humans and giants to create immortality was more of a threat. Does it say any where that Vendrick peered into her soul, or can it be theorized that she tried to open up to him and tell him that if he sat on the throne he would not only die, but he would also restart the cycle he was trying to escape. But when Nashandra shared the alternative of being the Dark Lord and together they could end the cycle, and the world as they know it. Hearing that everything he had worked for would crumble Vendrick runs and attempts to find a cure himself while preventing Nashandra from touching the throne so that she would need him to make a decision. Nashandra probably gets offended by her lover running away after she shares her idea so she decides its best not to tell her chosen undead the plan, but to slowly take away his humanity so that he would be completely deterred from attempting to relight the flame.

    Sorry I don't mean to spam comments but I felt I didn't really comment on your video very well. Like a lot of the other comments left by other youtubers I find the quality of your videos and how you're telling the story and not just reading off info and speculations of your own theories. Not that those are bad by any means they're just so many, very few actually make story-content of this quality. You tell the story of the character, add those personal head-cannon touches that make it your own interpretation and give a dramatic and quality presentation that sucks in the viewer. As I said your Artorias video sold me on your channel, you had me sniffing tears for Artorias and those who mourned him after that video. You are a an artist, of the best kind, you get us to experience emotion with the story.

    So all of this happened because of Manus, Father of The Abyss? And weren't the Dragons ALL destroyed?

    • @joeschmo3622
      @joeschmo3622 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +BlueNoiseZZ It's all largely speculative. However, based upon all the provided evidence, Manus is heavily involved in the events of Dark Souls II but he is not exactly the crux of the entire storyline. Manus is, essentially, the embodiment of Dark in the world yet was defeated centuries prior to the events of Dark Souls II. However, as Dark is an innate force of the natural world, he only dissipated into separate fragments, each harboring a distinct aspect of human nature (i.e. fear, wrath, and want) that would eventually adopt their own specific form. Nashandra was the weakest of these fragments and represented the human characteristic of desire and thus supplemented herself to compensate for her own fragility and thus instigated a large portion of the events of Dark Souls II for the sake of power. As for the dragons, yes, the Everlasting Dragons were destroyed by the ancient Lords in the original Dark Souls. However, there were remnants that were present in Dark Souls such as the ancient dragon of Ash Lake and Seath the Scaleless. As for the Dragons in Dark Souls II, those were either rudimentary descendants of the Everlasting Dragons or artificial constructs created by Aldia.

      Thats a good representation of the events that fold in this game. Its pretty impressive how they both connect, yet not told so lightly. To know a single boss, and coming from a DLC as well, can make such an influence on the second game. I guess in Dark Souls II this is the Age of Man/Age of Darkness? It seems Bonfires are still a resource of power, but I can very well look at DS3 and heavily tell that will be the Age of Man.

    • @joeschmo3622
      @joeschmo3622 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +BlueNoiseZZ I agree, there are a variety of well-integrated storylines between games, yet each retains a distinct identity.
      While Dark Souls II takes place in a kingdom ruled by men, rather than gods, I would not call it the Age of Man as that seems to be defined as the complete absence of the First Flame's influence thus I would say that it is still the ending Age of Fire. As for the Age of Man, I think of it more as a theoretical construct. What I mean by that is that I don't think that such an Age can actually occur within the world of Dark Souls. From my perspective, Light and Dark are two conflicting primordial forces that can never really be surmounted by their opposite. Essentially, the Flame appears, representing life and order, only to be gradually subdued by the inexorable balancing force of Dark, representing chaos and death. But neither is completely vanquished. When the Flame rises, Dark is sent into a state of remission yet remains within men. When the Flame fades, Dark ensues but an enduring ember remains in the cinders. Fire may be contrived, but it remains an integral natural driving force for existence alongside Dark, thus I do not see much of a distinction between the Age of Fire and the Age of Man.
      Anyway, just a thought on the matter.

    Gave me shivers! Please wait for the DLCs to come out, those can give you a lot of info that you could miss if you do some characters right now, for example, i believe we will know more about Navlaan (i believe the he is from the pagans of the sunken kingdom) or other NPCs will extend their stories. May the Dark shine your way.

    Hmmmmm......a very excellent lore video! Love the story that you put into this, makes Nashandra a more.....interesting character. This does get us thinking about something though you said in the beginning with Manus, how his soul split into fragments which Nashandra (and presumably the other three daughters of dark) came from. We truly don't know how many fragments actually were cast off from Manus we he died or how many cycles have happened before the events of Dark Souls 2 take root. Could it be possible that in every cycle that there would be an agent of the dark, like Nashandra here? If the cycle is constantly repeating itself the way it has than it would make sense that an entity with a part of Manus souls inside of them would always come to make an appearance to try and usher in the age of dark. This is just speculation but perhaps in the events of Dark Souls 3 would feature a newest champion of the dark, possible the closest one out of all the previous to ever come close to fulfilling the will of manus and plunge the world into the abyss and the age of dark.

    Great video - really informative, especially seeing as how in-game you don't find out much about Nashandra's true purpose until the end game, once you've actually beaten her and read into the lore more closely. Ironic that, as you said, she pretty much sealed her own fate in sending you off to clear all the obstacles to the Throne- because in gameplay terms, she is one of the easiest bosses in the game. Or her weakness was also because she was born from the smallest fragment of Manus?
    And those closing lines were so perfect too, saying how she met the same fate as Manus in the end. Though if she's just been returned to the Dark, she could return somehow in the future perhaps...

    Minhas palavras em respeito e admiração a esse jogo esplêndido. Mais que um jogo, uma história provocante de um precioso deleite aos jogadores que sabem enxergar a beleza fabulosa desse universo mítico e singular de Dark Souls II. Toda uma cosmologia literária sutilmente narrada nos fragmentos descritivos que se encontram nos itens, nas falas nos personagens, as Almas dos bosses, que são captadas de pouco em pouco, até, no final (se é que dá para compreender toda uma riqueza do universo de Dark Souls em uma única que vez que se termina o jogo). Eu me emociono só de comentar sobre esse jogo. Lembrar dos detalhes da história que convergindo-se vem a formar uma conexão de contexto significante em nossa imaginação, uma descrição ali e outra aqui que no final faz o todo da história, fazendo nossa admiração crescer ainda mais pelo jogo, ou então pela história, nem sei o que afinal nos provoca maior deleite e satisfação. Mas, fica incrustada na nossa mente essa vivência do game, a gente sente-se participante dessa jornada que empreende o herói rumo ao trono, e não dá para ignorar que as vezes dá-se a impressão que alguns personagens mais excêntricos de Dark Souls me parace estar conversando diretamente com o jogador. Como se houvesse uma mensagem subliminar a ser passada pelos criadores do game à geração atual e posterior que curtiram e curtirão o jogo... Que fique aqui constante a homenagem que faço com breves palavras em comentário de coração à beleza literária e poética sombria de Dark Souls I e II.

      Rough translation: My words of respect and admiration to this splendid game. More than a game, a provocative story of a precious treat players who know see the fabulous beauty of this mythical and unique universe of Dark Souls II. A whole literary cosmology subtly narrated in the descriptive fragments are the items in the lines on the characters, the Souls of bosses, which are picked up little by little, until at the end (if it gives to understand a wealth of universe Dark Souls on a single that time you finish the game). I am moved to comment only on this game. Remember the details of the story that comes up converging to form a significant context connection in our imagination, a description there and over here at the end makes the whole of history, doing our admiration grow further in the game, or by history, I do not know what ultimately causes the greatest delight and satisfaction. But is embedded in our mind this experience of the game, we feel a participant of this journey he undertakes the hero towards the throne and you can not ignore that sometimes gives the impression that some more eccentric characters of Dark Souls me mainly seemed to be talking directly with the player. As if there was a subliminal message to be passed by the game's creators to the current and subsequent generation your likes game ... stay here a constant tribute I do with briefly in the heart of comment to the dark literary and poetic beauty Dark souls I and II.

    Nashandra and the Chosen Undead, one final struggle, one final gauntlet, one final battle (approx. 3-4 if you're being careless) all for a booster seat... It's kind of a weird contradiction when you play dark souls for satisfaction from defeating bosses only to have an anti-climactic ending. I know that Dark Souls is ambiguous and mysterious in its nature but the endings of both games' endings could have been more epic in scale or something. Dark Soul 1's opening was rather over the top by Souls standards but it was rather nice.

    Each piece of dark believe themselves the true power, driving themselves mad, wild, not even knowing that it can only be this way, all the time, when ready, being collected by the true lord of the dark. Unknown to them the player is the free will of the dark and the final piece. All falls into place as realisation dawns with your transformation, rage overwhelms your being as your many eyes look upon your true foe, you make a grab and slam them to the ground and roar, your true form ready as your foe the chosen undead gets up. the cycle shall never end.

    I have 5-600 playing hours on the souls/borne series and I believe ds2 is the best game in it. Yeah a majority of the bosses are terrible but, the lore and level authenticity make the other world's seem very repetitive.
