The description of Lucatiel's Mask in DS3: A Hollow once fought valiantly with this mask, but feared the fading of her self, and implored a comrade remember her name. Perhaps that is why this gentleman's mask is named after a woman. Lucatiel, even after all this time, you are remembered. Rest in peace.
+MarsShadow One of items related to her literally states that she made a friend to remember her name at all costs... I loved it, because not only the item's description remembers Lucatiel, but it also mentioned that our DkS2 character is a part of the story too... And that in the end - he was indeed her friend.
She's not. Just because you can transpose her sword from the Curse Rotted Greatwood doesn't mean she's ever been a Moundmaker. I like how her sword's description can be interpreted in two ways. It is said to contain the fears of Hollows. People interpret it as "the sword killed many Undead/Hollows". I interpret it as "it harbors Lucatiel's fear of going hollow".
Sad spoilers? I guess? DS3 after defeating the demon tree. Can't one receive her sword by trading the boss soul? Before/during/after the time warp of DS2, she found the tree, fed a part of her soul to the tree. Maybe that's why her dialogue seems so wonky.
To find the Lucatiel mask in Dark Souls 3 literal ages beyond the land of Drangleic suggests that the Bearer of the Curse chose the path of neither light nor dark, bearing a crown that warded off the effects of Hollowing, and became one of the numerous legends mentioned in the Fahram set. More importantly, the Bearer of the Curse kept their promise to their dear friend, and remembered her name, perhaps even going as far as to entrust the safety of the last connection to her, her mask, with a wonderful, snuggly crow.
Sooooo is Lucatiel anyone else's favorite NPC in DS2? To be honest, I liked her a lot more than even Solaire. She felt more... I don't know... human (pun not intended).
psykonesis Well, she is definitely the most human character in any Dark Souls game (in my opinion, anyway). She's not some great warrior (although she is a proud knight of Mirrah, so she's not weak by any means), she's not a powerful sorceress, she's not an inhuman creature (yet), and most of all, she has no important journey or great destiny. She's simply a woman trying to hold onto her very humanity. Often, we see characters after they've turned Hollow, like Gwyn and Laurentius, but we never see them actually being turned Hollow. With Lucatiel, we see how painful it is to be afflicted by the curse. We see her lose everything that's important to her; her memories, her personality, everything that makes her who she is. We see her in such a desperate state that she'd be willing to do anything, even murder the player (seemingly her only friend on her lonely journey), if it meant that she could hang onto her humanity. At the end, we see her begging you simply to remember who she is; she knows she'll forget. She hangs desperately onto life, never wanting to let go, and that's what I think makes her such a great character. She reacts like most people would to being afflicted with such a fate, people who are faced with death, or something like it. Through her, we see how horrible the curse is and what it can do to a person, and possibly most touching of all, we see a desperate woman clinging onto the very essence of her being, all she has left. It's a depressing story, and it's made even worse by us being unable to help her. All we can do is watch as she fades away, the only comfort we can give her being that of memory, as she knows that even if she forgets herself, we'll remember her. TL;DR: Yeah, Lucatiel is amazing! Best NPC in Dark Souls 2 hands down!
My heart broke when she said "maybe we're all cursed, from the moment we're born." Immediately I thought of Crestfallen Saulden. People criticize Dark Souls 2 for a lot of reasons, but I really appreciate what it was. Yeah, most of the bosses were "slight variations on 'a dude in armor'," but it really gave the narrative a stronger focus. It really felt like I was fighting through the decayed remnants of Vendrick's kingdom and army. Yeah, the map was linear and didn't have the interconnectedness of Lordran, but it delivered a better sense of progression. Except for the Iron Keep being a sea of magma on top of a windmill basically. But like, the direct path from Majula to the Lost Sinner was amazing. I was awestruck as I fought through the collapsing ruins of an ancient kingdom and found a hidden passage which allowed me to enter the place from which those who dug the tunnel were fleeing, before hijacking a prisoner transport ship and sailing to a decaying prison. The Gutter sucked to play, but I think the thing that makes it enjoyable is that it really captured the vibe that areas like it and Blighttown try to capture. Walking along the rickety wooden paths really made me feel like I was walking through a city build by the undead. Everything seemed to focus on this central theme of resilience. Even if you're thrown to the bottom of a cesspit, the human spirit tries to survive. Every area had a strong central theme, even if the connections between them were somewhat dubious (Earthen Peak to Iron Keep, Drangleic Castle to Shrine of Amana, Aldia's Keep to Dragon Aerie). Dark Souls 1 is better, but that does not make Dark Souls 2 a bad game.
"What is this curse..." monologue is my favorite, you can hear the existential despair in her voice. Its done so well. She puts out there basically the base fear of every human, the most basic natural urge. To simply exist, what a horror that is for people to face, to just unbecome.
+shakezulla86 You're damn right. On an interesting, if somewhat random sidenote, she sounds an awful lot (to me at least) like the actress who plays Brienne of Tarth (from Game of Thrones). It's rather chilling to hear her speak about what she once had, and what she would do to reclaim what is basically her identity.
As someone who is currently losing someone close to Alzheimer's, I can claim the horrid accuracy of the curse depicted in these games. The fact that it is painfully slow, whittling away at a person's memories and characteristics is infinitely worse than simply losing someone to death. I must live with the fact that my grandmother will die with no memory of me, as all traces of me are already gone from her mind. She is no longer who she was before, treating me with skepticism and hostility as if I were a stranger. The seventy years of experience that shaped who she was have been erased, leaving a memoryless shell. These games move me on a level no other game has, and though I have come to peace with my own mortality and have made my own purpose, I still fear that wretched disease and hope that one day we will vanquish it from the earth
The King of the Penguins Where there is a will, there is a way. And in medical terms, will we lack not, neither do we lack the necessary wits or funding (well, that’s actually false, scientists always lack money even if we had an infinite amount of it), and advances are already made as we speak. The same way we destroyed our exterior enemies (smallpox may you continue to rot in hell), I’m sure we will come to destroy our enemies from within, and this feeble flesh of ours will be strengthen by our science :)
@@illfaptothis333 As someone who has lost three grandparents to dementia (two to Alzheimer's, one to vascular dementia) and now currently working for a dementia charity, I would like to tell you to use a little more tact and empathy next time, but I reckon you won't. Don't get me wrong, we all joke sometimes in the face of that awful condition (mostly as a coping strategy), but I hope you or you loved ones never have to go through that horrible journey.
Same. I made a Mirrah Knight, using a Hollowslayer Greatsword and the Mirrah set, progressively putting on new armor to show my character becoming battered yet retaining her main chest piece.
Lord of Innistrad I loved it. Kiaran Of Mirrah was my favorite character I've made in Souls. I used Miracles eventually, becoming capable of two shotting nearly everything. I eventually donned Lucatiel's mask after using the Pharis Hat, and my character used the Sunset gauntlets and leggings, both stained in blood and bandages. She linked the fire so that the end would come slower, hopefully slow enough so that her homeland could thrive.
Eduardo Mangueira Go up the tower where the giant archer is in the Undead Settlement and drop off the side midway, don't go to the top. Be sure to be precise or wear the Silvercat ring cause you may die. Help Siegward kill the Demon there if it's there then head into the nearby building. Head all the way to the roof and grab Flynn's ring if you want(good ring.) then jump off the north side of the building to the tower. Fall the to the bottom to find the Mirrah Set(hat not included) and the Chloranthy ring hidden in nearby boxes.
Lucatiel is the most relatable and grounded character for me in all of Dark Souls. Honestly, the existential fear of losing the only thing you truly know; yourself, is the the most frightful thing I can possibly think of. The death of self, the ego, the only thing we desperately hold on to in hopes that we can live it to the fullest. Most of us want to keep existing no matter what and Lucatiel is a great embodiment of the bittersweet experience we call mortality.
I think she knew. It seemed to me like she was so struck by the fact that you gave a damn that she wanted to give you something that showed the depths of her appreciation. At the same time, her pride kept her from admitting what she was doing, so she came up with a convenient lie to accomplish both. I'm giving you the thing I have that would do the most to help my current situation, but I have no idea what it is, or what it does. Yeah, that sounds terribly convenient.
Chris Wolfe I don't like that idea, it leaves a bittersweet taste in my mouth. I mean, it's a lovely thought, but I'm carrying seventy of the damn things. X_X
That is my favorite part about it. We as players, even on our first playthroughs, usually had a pretty big stockpile by the point we met her out there, so why the fuck did we not go "Uh... Friend... Take this, look into it, imagine your past, crush it in your hand, and reclaim yourself." X,D
The line that gets me every time. No matter how many times I hear it. I always choke up. "Sometimes I feel obsessed with this insignificant thing called self." Ayep... every time *wipes eyes* I never forgot you Lucatiel. I leveled that mask all the way to the max. Then in 3 reclaimed it... You were never forgotten. I'll keep my promise Lucatiel
supremehunter11 I feel Solaire is the descent into depression, a sign that even the strongest will and mind has a limit. Lucatiel though, I feel is the desperation to exist, the desperation to simply be, to fight through even the darkest times, even if you have to become a monster to do so.
supremehunter11 No, Solaire was not depressed. He fell into a depression, but even then he could withstand it. Lucatiel I consider a far better example of depression because she accepts the fate. She accepts that she is a lost cause. That there is nothing for her life. She cannot find a reason, a motive to keep living. So she seeks desperately for someone, anyone who could provide her solace. A means of feeling happy. An anchor since she herself cannot carry the burden of living. Which was her brother, who she sought out since everything else in her life was gone. Solaire forsakes his life for a goal that he dreamed of, that is ambition, not depression. Lucatiel was basically walking death, someone without cause.
Yeah, but then you start forgetting you had it on you. Then you forgot how to use the notepad, flip the pages, or even your very own hand writing. Until the very end, you can't even read anything because your mind faded completely.
Alzheimer’s is the degradation of your entire brain, the loss of memory is a symptom of your hippocampus going to shit. In a way, you could say that the curse is to your body what Alzheimers is to your brain.
Well hollows are believed to be dangerous for many reasons. Their mastery with weapons isn’t one of them. (I got the joke, just wanted to follow up with something)
I loved Lucatiel's storyline, her asking to remember her name got me right in the feels. While DS1 was definitely a better game overall, the emphasis in DS2 of the undead not knowing how they got to Drangleic, and watching Lucatiel slowly hollow really hit it home and made undeath seem much more real and hopeless. Watching NPCs hollow in DS1 was sad but there was less character development about it. Lordran came across as already lost, it was interesting to watch Drangleic in it's death throes.
Lucatiels story can be the most personal thing for some. Had a family member suffer from early onset alzheimer's disease but passed away before it became worse and the idea of losing yourself is to me one of the scariest things
If the undead forget everything, why don't they forget how to KEEP HITTING ME OF A CLI- ------------------------------------------------ YOU DIED ------------------------------------------------
Probably doesn’t remove muscle memory. Keep note that hollows will attempt to continue doing what they were doing before going hollow. (eg. guarding something, or hunting something)
It's a shame that she didn't know what the "Human Effigy" does afterall if she did then perhaps she could have staved off the curse even if only for a short while
I think she did know what that does and was just being charitable. I find it hard to believe she carried something like that around without understanding its use, or else she would have thrown it away.
Well she did say she doesn't know what it was for and someone like Lucatiel wouldn't just lie about something important like that i doubt she could have seen one until she came to Drangleic perhaps she wasn't even told what it does
What really angered me about this game is that I could not save her! I mean I will admit I cried for Lucatiel, I could relate to her loss of those she held dear, that search for purpose and the conviction that she wanted to find her brother. Her family was what driven her to go to hell and back to find her only purpose of going on. I could relate on many emotional levels of this character, I guess that is good writing in the games part. That is dark souls for you, this sense that you cannot save anyone but yourself, all you can do is listen to their stories, all the characters you meet are like dying flames in an ever expanding darkness; all you can do is slowly ease their pain and give them their dying wish. Lucatiel, I wanted to fight alongside her till the end of the game it broke my heart that she was losing herself. When I met her for the last time I wore her armor in honor of her. I felt like I was keeping her legacy alive. Call me a nerd but it was one of the few stories I followed to the very end. Praise the sun and thank you, keep making these Vaati.
Alex Castle Yeah but that’s also its greatest source of frustration : you have no impact on the world, or only a really superficial one. Sure, you can kill gods and goddesses, but someone will come to take their place, and you’re still unable to open your f*ckin mouth to say « hey, Lucatiel, take these and look deep within them, you’ll become human again » and handing her a humanity, or however you call them in English. Honestly that angers me to no end >< I’m not crying, you’re crying, shut up ! 😭
There aren't many NPCs that I particularly like in DS2 but Lucatiel is definitely my favorite in the series. "Maybe we're all cursed... from the moment we're born." Such a simple, yet amazing line.
I think Luca might be my favorite Souls character. She is a helpful ally, but unlike a lot of the others she doesn't turn on you, or end up with a (supposedly) somewhat content ending. She just sorta... fades away, and only we are left to remember her. Really no other character comes to mind with that type of end.
SwollenEize The weird thing is I never really saw her as a friend. More so it's just she was someone who recognized that we shared a struggle, offered her assistance where she could, but was clearly on her own path that we just happened to intersect with a handful of times. She was someone you saw and wanted to help succeed, but at the end when it was clear she had gone as far as she could you knew she was at her limit and you had to keep going.
James Marino She also entrusts her legacy to you, the only person who was around when she reached her limit and the only one who seemed to give a damn about her. If no other time, I believe she wanted at least one person to like her and remember her and what she stood for before she fully hollowed. From my world view, I believe a person would only want that from another if they trusted and cared for them in the capacity of a friend.
SwollenEize I can see your point, but the exchanges were always more so about her than you. So it's like she saw you as a way to keep her going and see her quest to completion.
"please remember my name, for I may not myself" I always liked to think that the red invader isn't Aslatiel... but actual Lucatiel - after forgetting everything for a long time all that she kept remembering was the name of her dear brother, as that was one of the things, that was most important to her - why she came to Dranleic in the first place... time is convoluted in Dranleic - a lot of time pasted and all that remained of Lucatiel... was Aslatiel. ^^
it kind of doesn't make any more or less sad than it is to me, but it is definitely interesting. never thought about that before, i like that theory a lot
I really like this theory too. I think it makes good sense; I mean why would her brother be wearing the item 'Lucatiel's Mask' and not 'Mirrah Hat'? the In-game description even reads "Normally hats and masks are separate, but these two have been adjoined." - the key word being "Normally" for why would a man need this disguise? "Normally, people keep a safe distant when they see this mask." This quote leads me to believe that the two were adjoined only to hide her sex. The sex change coffin is a thing in the game, and the only thing it does not change is your character's face; which is why she would still need to wear it to become the person she tried the hardest not to forget, not herself but her lost brother.
It's something to think about, but then again, it states that a undead, once arriving at drangleic, first forgets why they came there in the first place.
Perhaps Lucatiel is as swift as the coursing river, with all the force of a great typhoon, and all the strength of a raging fire. She's mysterious as the Dark side of the moon.
Hollowing exists in real life, and that's why I think it's so easy to understand and empathise with Lucatiel's story. The fear that you could be taking care of a grandparent or elder family member, and out of nowhere they forget who you are and start attacking you because they think you broke into their house is real. It's so sad to see someone forget everything and everyone. Even themselves.
BarefootDruid ... Yeah, but obviously some NPCs were quite memorable, since... they were remembered (and liked well enough by either the game creators or the public, or both, to have her memory enshrined into DS3). To be honest, apart from Lucatiel, I don’t remember many other NPCs (at least not by name), even though I’m currently playing the game, but still.
*Lucatiel* A mix between Otztrava, Solaire & Siegmeyer. She helps you in multiple key boss battles: Flexible Sentry, Lost Sinner, Smelter Demon, The Rotten, Burn Ivory King. Lucatiel is brave & Badass, real good character Tomboyish and cool companion that only has on human task, find her brother Aslatiel and bring him back, put perish near the end, and you find Aslatiel... Very cool story Vaaty.
Lucatiel kinda reminds me of Brienne of Tarth from Game of Thrones. Lucatiel has one of the saddest stories in all of Soulsborne. Rest In Peace, Lucatiel of Mirrah. You will never be forgotten
I love so much this character and her storyline. You know... this is exactly what the characters in various games should be. After all, in fact, in the game, she does nothing but talk to us with every meeting. We see only the consequences, and we hear her sad story with bitterness. For the entire game, she only moves around the locations, removes the mask and says goodbye to us. And that's all! And this is an example of a good presentation of the character's story! We didn't see how much she went through in her life, we only saw the consequences, which get worse with every meeting. And by her fate, Lucatiel fell in love with the hearts of millions of fans of the Dark Souls series. Sorry for my English. In Russia we love her backstory too
It still causes my soul to ache that you can’t give her back her effigy and tell her/show her that it can restore/maintain her memory. Then one thing she needed to remember herself, and she gives it to you because she doesn’t remember what it’s for.
I just witnessed something similar to hollowing. Just before my grandmother died years ago... She slowly lost her memory. Thing like how her grandchildren were named, later the names of her own childre ... Until she didn't even remembered her own Name... This hunts me in my Dreams and keeps me up at nights when i am lonely or just full of thoughts. I fear loosing everything that i learned through live... Everything that Just defined me, my way through time. The Name of my Loved ones, names of my children. I can relate to this character so much because i fear like her.
Potato if we take bloodborn and demon souls into account, you place her above characters like Eileen or the black maiden ? Honestly I can’t decide myself :/ If you add in DS1 and DS3, with Solaire and the knight of Catharina who’s name I won’t attempt to write without looking it up, the choice jumps from tough to impossible >
Even years later this story makes me tear up. The actress who plays Lucatiel nails the fear and stubborn pride of the character so well that you can't help but sympathize with her. She's so scared of losing herself. Of losing what's important to her. She's like a dementia patient or someone with a terminal illness. She has so much more story she wants to tell of her life but it's being cut short. It's fantastic writing. But it still makes me so sad.
Man.... That was deep, you using philosophy to describle the journey of Lucatiel that I'm actually very fan, the final part , about the mean and the despair human... Amazing man.
I'm really happy you decided to make a souls video for Lucatiel. She is pretty much one of the few characters I actually got attached to in Dark Souls 2
Lucatiel's story is perhaps one of the most tragic of any minor character in the whole of Dark Souls. And one of the few times we get a direct glimpse of how the curse can directly affect a person... You can only fight the curse for so long before it consumes you, and we clearly see that stage taking place throughout the game. As always, amazing and insightful. Your videos are the pillar of the TH-cam community, VaatiVidya.
This was the only time I knew I had to prepare to cry. For Lucatiel was the first questline I completed fully in the series (I played DS2 first) and Lucatiel was the most relatable character I’ve met so far.
Vaati, what the heck. Why do you keep making these videos that break my heart and make me cry and bring all the emotions up to the surface!?!?! Seriously though. You're freakin amazing
The way she describes the fear of losing her sense of identity is exactly how a lot of people with dementia would describe it. I've seen it with grandparents and I've seen it countless times in my job, working directly with people with dementia, often at the point of diagnosis, when they have the most insight into what will probably happen to them. The gradual loss of focus and memories, and the dreaded belief that they will lose what makes them an individual. Her characterisation really strikes a chord with me because it is all too realistic - especially how these feelings make even the most strong-willed, determined people feel vulnerable. This is probably why she's my favourite NPC in all the DS games. *Disclaimer - it's possible to live relatively well with dementia, if managed correctly; nevertheless, I've met too many people who feel the way Lucatiel describes feeling.
Lucatiel is by far my fave character in the Souls series,I'd say even in gaming as a whole. Her inner struggle feels genuine and grounded,it's sonething I can relate to. When you find her at The Black Gulch I was like "damn...".and had to put down the controller for a while to process the curse of life thing. Thanks man, this vid rocks!.
Lucatiel story reminds me of Solaires a little in how she is there to help others in battle and is yet on the same journey as the player. She's always one step ahead of us and even manages to get to Aldia Keep which means she got the kings ring. Her background is different though than Solaires in that she just doesn't want to lose herself to hollowing unlike Solaires who wants to ignite the new flame. I like her character and this was a great video on her Vat so thanks.
I love it when you make these videos. It always adds more depth to an already great story. It also makes me kinda sad cause i have never been able to finish the game. I appreciate how your stories carry me along even though i haven't managed to play far enough into the game.
It's interesting, because the first time I played Dark Souls II I remembered her name even when I didn't complete her questline. Lucatiel of Mirrah is a great character that represents the fear of losing ourselves.
Wonderful video. I can't tell if I'm crying, or if it's just my flu, but this was a pretty intense one! She really does carry her own story-- quite the sad one too. I wish she could of pushed along just a bit longer-- maybe she'd find what she was looking for. Definitely my favorite character in DS2.
Honolulu Joe They are pretty similar, but there are differences. I dunno who I like most, Brienne is a mountain of a woman and her skills added to her brute strengh only makes her that more intimidating, yet Lucatiel has something unique about the outfit and the weapons she uses, almost like a Renaissance Italian knight rather than a Medieval one. I thought that was gonna downgrade my interest on her since I preffer people with the legendary armors rather than the fancy clothes, but for some odd reason I found myself just adding her to my favourite character designs for warriors. Maybe it's because she reminds me of an Italian swordsman of sorts and since Italy had a turmoiled history of constant civil wars before uniting, that only adds to how fierce in combat she might be despite not wearing any particularly heavy armor. In fact, she says that Mirrah is constantly in war with neighbouring kingdoms which only strenghens the comparison with Renaissance Italy.
There was always a bitter-sweetness about Lucatiel, and she still is a very memorable character from Dark Souls II, and it makes you appreciate how powerful story-telling can be in video games, even in a game series that was criticized for not having a "direct plot" but definitely rich in lore. Your name is not forgotten, brave warrior!
Lucatiel is by far my favourite character in the game, and so incredibly relatable. Nothing scares me more than death and insignificance. I'd rather live forever in torture and agony than not live at all.
Vaati, iam seriously impressed everytime i watch your Lore Videos. If One plays darksouls, the deep touch of the story may gets lost, but after seeing those videos, i for myself got another point of view when playing it. It pushes the atmosphere to be even more tragic and sad at it is anyway. You, Sir, are doing an awesome work. Best wishes!
"MY NAME IS LUCATIEL! I beg of that you remember my name... for I may not myself." Man, each time I hear her say that I'm like "Damned" and feel sooo ba for her. She's pbly the first NPC for which I cared.
*bumps into Lucatiel on NG+ with the king's crown* h-here... *puts crown on her* all better! *hugs Lucatiel* Lucatiel: ...who the hell are you!? Edit: Lucatiel is one of my favorite souls characters because she embodies the undead curse so completely to the point that it acts like Dimentia or Alzheimers. It really got me when she starts talking about her mission after recognizing you and then says "...who are you?" In an unsettled voice like she'd forgotten You were there. My great Gran died of Dimentia. This shit hurts.
I like to think that the reason why Lucatiel never got past Aldia's keep was because of her brother. She could never beat him in a duel, so he is the one gatekeeping her from going foward.
03:54 - best part. I always come back to this video at least couple times a year to rewatch this specific part. I imagine how an actor/actress would perform this in a movie. And I think about how deep it actually is... "Maybe we're all cursed, from the moment we're born" ... right after saying how much people are obsessed with their ownself... so good!
The saddest and most ironic thing in Lucatiel's story, is that when you meet her for a second time she gives you a human effigy; the one thing that could postpone or alleviate her fate. And she has no idea what it does.
Vitor Souza We should persuade our grandsons that Gwyn is the god people pray to in churches, and replace the Bible by lore about DS, just to mess with them (and because it’s much cooler mythology)
"My name is Lucatiel. I beg of you remember my name... For I may not myself."
Man that makes me shiver.

i didn't watch the whole video yet but reading your comment made me shiver.
good job sir
There’s a remix of the nameless song called “I Had A Name” and this exact comment is in it somewhere.
I'm so glad her name was mentioned in ds3
@@phylippezimmermannpaquin2062 yes you can receive her mask from the birds nest thing on top of firelink shrine
I do too
In Dark Souls III, you can find Lucatiels Mask, labelled exactly that. The PC kept their promise. They remembered her name.
the PC?

AH, I see. Yep the cursed chosen one did keep the promise.

Morbid curiosity, perhaps?

She's certainly mine.
She certainly had the potential to be. But she wasn't handled well.
***** True, but she had the best premise, character design, voice actor etc.
Her story was also the most interesting imo
psykonesis Well, she is definitely the most human character in any Dark Souls game (in my opinion, anyway).
My heart broke when she said "maybe we're all cursed, from the moment we're born."
Immediately I thought of Crestfallen Saulden.
Amen, bro. Amen
Agreed
+Shinigami192837 Dark Souls is a pessimist game.
"To be alive... to walk this earth... that's the real curse right there."

PREACH
"What is this curse..." monologue is my favorite, you can hear the existential despair in her voice. Its done so well. She puts out there basically the base fear of every human, the most basic natural urge. To simply exist, what a horror that is for people to face, to just unbecome.
word
Same thing happened to my grandmother. She had dementia and became hostile to everyone. Even her own kids and grandkids.Except me for some reason.
I feel your words, same thing except it was my grandfather
The King of the Penguins Where there is a will, there is a way.
And in medical terms, will we lack not, neither do we lack the necessary wits or funding (well, that’s actually false, scientists always lack money even if we had an infinite amount of it), and advances are already made as we speak.
The same way we destroyed our exterior enemies (smallpox may you continue to rot in hell), I’m sure we will come to destroy our enemies from within, and this feeble flesh of ours will be strengthen by our science :)
bruh just use purging stone on your gma
@@illfaptothis333 As someone who has lost three grandparents to dementia (two to Alzheimer's, one to vascular dementia) and now currently working for a dementia charity, I would like to tell you to use a little more tact and empathy next time, but I reckon you won't. Don't get me wrong, we all joke sometimes in the face of that awful condition (mostly as a coping strategy), but I hope you or you loved ones never have to go through that horrible journey.
I'm so glad you can get all of her gear in ds3. I made a lucatiel character just to help people and continue her good work.
Same. I made a Mirrah Knight, using a Hollowslayer Greatsword and the Mirrah set, progressively putting on new armor to show my character becoming battered yet retaining her main chest piece.
+Squadron Leader Crippled Back That... Is actually brilliant. I love it.
She linked the fire so that the end would come slower, hopefully slow enough so that her homeland could thrive.
where can you get the set?
If only she had bought the DLC and collected the crowns. Either that or figured out what that Human Effigy was before she gave it to us... x|
Lol I know that's sucks like I would have told her what they were used for to save her ass as soon as you meet her
I think she knew.
Chris Wolfe
I don't like that idea, it leaves a bittersweet taste in my mouth. I mean, it's a lovely thought, but I'm carrying seventy of the damn things. X_X
Slow clap
That is my favorite part about it. We as players, even on our first playthroughs, usually had a pretty big stockpile by the point we met her out there, so why the fuck did we not go "Uh... Friend... Take this, look into it, imagine your past, crush it in your hand, and reclaim yourself." X,D
The line that gets me every time. No matter how many times I hear it. I always choke up. "Sometimes I feel obsessed with this insignificant thing called self." Ayep... every time *wipes eyes*
I never forgot you Lucatiel. I leveled that mask all the way to the max. Then in 3 reclaimed it... You were never forgotten. I'll keep my promise Lucatiel
Do you still remember?
@@Kreasddjb yes
I always get the mask in ds3. In her name.
Lucatiel feels like the definition of depression.
Welcome to Dark Souls!
supremehunter11 I feel Solaire is the descent into depression, a sign that even the strongest will and mind has a limit. Lucatiel though, I feel is the desperation to exist, the desperation to simply be, to fight through even the darkest times, even if you have to become a monster to do so.
I always thought undeath was like dementia.
supremehunter11 No, Solaire was not depressed.
*****
That's a really shallow way of looking at the Dark Souls characters.
The undead should carry around a notepad so they don't forget shit lol
Yeah, but then you start forgetting you had it on you. Then you forgot how to use the notepad, flip the pages, or even your very own hand writing. Until the very end, you can't even read anything because your mind faded completely.
741852BEC Pro undead carve a full guide on writing and using Human Effiges on their entire body.
Not a bad idea! Thanks Jesus.
741852BEC So basically, the undead curse is Alzhiemers?
haha, nice one. What's that movie where the guy has to take photographs of everything?
Am I the only one drawing Parallels between the hollowing effect and Alzheimer's disease? Like the loss of self of memory of everything you are
+Samuel Robert that's correct .
Dark Souls is very easily a metaphor for the mental illnesses of humanity. A better one than most slasher movies, for certain.
Good thing alzheimers disease doesnt turn you into a walking corpse :D
Alzheimer’s is the degradation of your entire brain, the loss of memory is a symptom of your hippocampus going to shit.
In a way, you could say that the curse is to your body what Alzheimers is to your brain.
Those with Alzheimer's certainly are a husk of their former selves.

Well hollows are believed to be dangerous for many reasons. Their mastery with weapons isn’t one of them.
(I got the joke, just wanted to follow up with something)
Don't bring a sword to a dragon tooth fight.
Lucatiel is my Dark Souls waifu.
Priscilla will kick your ass
F*CK Yeah! Priscilla=Ultimate Waifu. Dat....Tail.
Nope. Emerald is ultimate wifey goals

If the undead forget everything, why don't they forget how to KEEP HITTING ME OF A CLI-

Its probably that the Curse doesn‘t affect the Fight or Floght instinct
The curse just removes the memories and feelings not how they talk or fight
Probably doesn’t remove muscle memory. Keep note that hollows will attempt to continue doing what they were doing before going hollow. (eg. guarding something, or hunting something)
It’s the one thing they have left, after all else fades.
ROBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERT
She definitely meets her brother. Her brother attacks her just likes he attacks us, but Lucatiel never won a match against him.
It would explain why she's so fatigued when we see her in Aldia's keep
It's a shame that she didn't know what the "Human Effigy" does afterall if she did then perhaps she could have staved off the curse even if only for a short while
I think she did know what that does and was just being charitable. I find it hard to believe she carried something like that around without understanding its use, or else she would have thrown it away.
Maybe only the MC can use it?
Dude that wouldn't make any sense
The master chief is awesome after all.
Nerd.... you asked for it :)
Warren S. That's the beauty of the game. You can't save everyone.
Honestly that angers me to no end ><
I’m not crying, you’re crying, shut up ! 😭
Came back to this after beating Dark Souls 3 with her sword. Still my favorite NPC in the series. Lucatiel, your legend lives on through the ages
Did you get her armor
There aren't many NPCs that I particularly like in DS2 but Lucatiel is definitely my favorite in the series. "Maybe we're all cursed... from the moment we're born." Such a simple, yet amazing line.
I think Luca might be my favorite Souls character. She is a helpful ally, but unlike a lot of the others she doesn't turn on you, or end up with a (supposedly) somewhat content ending. She just sorta... fades away, and only we are left to remember her.
Really no other character comes to mind with that type of end.
Lucatiel was probably my favorite DaS2 NPC out of the short cast they gave us. Solaire's foil for sure.
She definitely is our best friend through most of our journey.
SwollenEize
The weird thing is I never really saw her as a friend.
Where i found lucatiel quite likable, i think vengarl is even better. I just want to carry him around and share the adventure with him
SwollenEize
I can see your point, but the exchanges were always more so about her than you. So it's like she saw you as a way to keep her going and see her quest to completion.
"please remember my name, for I may not myself"
I always liked to think that the red invader isn't Aslatiel... but actual Lucatiel - after forgetting everything for a long time all that she kept remembering was the name of her dear brother, as that was one of the things, that was most important to her - why she came to Dranleic in the first place...
time is convoluted in Dranleic - a lot of time pasted and all that remained of Lucatiel... was Aslatiel. ^^
interesting
up to you if that makes it more sad or not... but I always liked her... :)
it kind of doesn't make any more or less sad than it is to me, but it is definitely interesting. never thought about that before, i like that theory a lot
"My name is Lucatiel, I beg of you remember my name, for I may not myself"
I literally cried when she said that
Cant wait for lore videos of Bloodborne when it comes out
I can't wait for bloodborne
SheerCyber why must it be exclusive ;_;
Jason Maki it's to great for pc and xbox
SheerCyber lol wat? if anything its too good to be held back by ps4. 1080p 30fps is bullshit
Jason Maki maybe bc Demon Souls was also exclusively on PlayStation, maybe it has something to do with that
Perhaps Lucatiel is as swift as the coursing river,
with all the force of a great typhoon,
and all the strength of a raging fire.
She's mysterious as the Dark side of the moon.
I MEAN THE COFFIN ON THE BEACH C'MON THO GAIS SRSLY
MorganEarlJones that doesn't really make any sense, there was no coffin on the beach in Mulan.
the gender thing
It's incredible how perfect of an allegory for my own depression dark souls 2 is
Dont u dare go hollow
Hollowing exists in real life, and that's why I think it's so easy to understand and empathise with Lucatiel's story. The fear that you could be taking care of a grandparent or elder family member, and out of nowhere they forget who you are and start attacking you because they think you broke into their house is real. It's so sad to see someone forget everything and everyone. Even themselves.
Easily one of the most loved NPCs on the entire series, at least for me.
"DaRk SoUlS 2 DoEsN'T HaVe GoOd and MeMorAbLE NPC"
Tbh it kinda doesnt (at least to some of us), loved the game and the dlcs but none of the npcs really....clicked i guess
I love me some jugo! And straid is pretty cool too
I mean you could say the same about DSIII NPCs.

*Lucatiel*
A mix between Otztrava, Solaire & Siegmeyer.
Lucatiel is my favorite Soulsborne character.. Her story makes me cry. ;-;
“Maybe we’re all cursed, from the moment we’re born”
Me: questions my own life*
I love so much this character and her storyline.
You know... this is exactly what the characters in various games should be.
Lucatiel is my favorite character in all of SoulsBorne.
Potato if we take bloodborn and demon souls into account, you place her above characters like Eileen or the black maiden ?
Honestly I can’t decide myself :/
If you add in DS1 and DS3, with Solaire and the knight of Catharina who’s name I won’t attempt to write without looking it up, the choice jumps from tough to impossible >
Awesome video. Existentialism is one of my personal favorite schools of thought, and I think you nailed this one
Lucatiel is hands down the best NPC in any from soft game
(Solaire 2nd place)
After all these Years, I did not forget about Lucatiel
"Existential despair."
That is our very real curse.
My favorite character from DS2 by far. Also mad editing skills Vaati.Loved the "flashback" where she is training with her brother.
There should be a mention of the Human Effigy she gives you. She essentially gave you Her humanity. Man, what a sweetheart.
Nice video as usual Vaati. Lucatiel's story is both, the most sad, and the most interesting in the game. Well designed character overall.
whom ever said darksouls 2 was bad didn't look close enough
Man.... That was deep, you using philosophy to describle the journey of Lucatiel that I'm actually very fan, the final part , about the mean and the despair human... Amazing man.
I know her name. She is Lucatiel of the land of Mirrah, knight, sister and human. She exists.
I'm really happy you decided to make a souls video for Lucatiel. She is pretty much one of the few characters I actually got attached to in Dark Souls 2
"There's only one way up in Mirrah." Cuts to Lucatiel on an elevator.
*Slow clap*
I love Lucatiel and her story. Beautiful job putting this together.
She's my favorite NPC in the game.
I ALWAYS complete her questline in every playthrough.
She's waifu material after all.
Thanks man,this vid rocks!.
I love the ds2 lore, and it's even better when it ties together with the other two games
The way you cut this together is stunning.
Love your lore videos buddy. Keep em coming.
Thanks man! Probably not many more to go before bloodborne comes out thoughf
The cinematic flair in this is incredible... dat fadeaway at 7:15 doe.
If they gave me a choice to pick who'd rule at my side as the monarch I'd choose Luctiel
Huh I wonder if Miyazaki ever considered a pair of characters that told *EACH OTHER their pasts so that they could remember for one another.
Sam Svensson this a hint at something or what ? I mean dark souls 3 confirms from her mask that they were friends to the end and remembered each other
I love it when you make these videos.
Am i crazy or does Lucatiel's tough lady voice sound really similar to that of Brienne of Tarth from GOT
+Honolulu Joe I thought so too, sounds very similar, the strength of their loyalty kinda makes it feel like it's the same person
Actually, yeah. Wow. "My sword and my loyalty to my lord," indeed.
some history there well the renaissance in italy sounds intresting, any videos on that topic?

I've been here since you did the Solaris lore video, and you've been giving me information I didn't have in the beginning and I thank you for that
It's not the cough that carries you off, it's the coffin they carry you off in.
It's not how you die, it's how you're remembered.
Not until seeing this video did it occur to me that the scar around Lucatiel's left eye is her Darksign. Very well done, as always, Vaati.
Poor lucatiel, i felt for her the most
Vaati, iam seriously impressed everytime i watch your Lore Videos. If One plays darksouls, the deep touch of the story may gets lost, but after seeing those videos, i for myself got another point of view when playing it. It pushes the atmosphere to be even more tragic and sad at it is anyway.
You, Sir, are doing an awesome work. Best wishes!
When i get Dark Souls 3 in its revamped version, I'm totally gonna make a Return of Lucatiel character :D
Bruh. I was not expecting this level of existentiality from a Dark Souls vidya. Well done
"MY NAME IS LUCATIEL!
I beg of that you remember my name... for I may not myself."
Man, each time I hear her say that I'm like "Damned" and feel sooo ba for her.
She's pbly the first NPC for which I cared.
week after week you just nail it. bravo sir. i wish they would hire you to ensure the depth of future releases
love the music. its a beautiful story, really got to me. *sheds single tear*
I've watched so many of these videos and I can't believe how much I've missed in dark souls 2. Thanks so much for these videos
*bumps into Lucatiel on NG+ with the king's crown* h-here... *puts crown on her* all better!
*hugs Lucatiel*
Lucatiel: ...who the hell are you!?
Edit: Lucatiel is one of my favorite souls characters because she embodies the undead curse so completely to the point that it acts like Dimentia or Alzheimers.
It really got me when she starts talking about her mission after recognizing you and then says "...who are you?" In an unsettled voice like she'd forgotten You were there.
My great Gran died of Dimentia.
This shit hurts.
Lucatiel: a hollow can never be human again
Bearer of the curse: bet
And she has no idea what it does.
this is my favorite one so far, the music and the monologue makes it perfect.
Dark Souls has a very well made modern mythology, we should tell those tales for our kids and grandsons!
+Vitor Souza BR?
Vitor Souza We should persuade our grandsons that Gwyn is the god people pray to in churches, and replace the Bible by lore about DS, just to mess with them (and because it’s much cooler mythology)
i absolutely love those videos, the editing and everithing.i like how you perform the lucatiel traaining when she is telling you the story
My favorite character in all of Dark Souls.
