    Hey Thomas, I have a 2000 Jetta 2.0L 5 speed. has a cylinder #4 misfire code. Changed the plugs, wires, coil, and even the injector a cylinder #4. Still has the same code coming back, drives fine. Come to a stop light and it has a miss. Drive a few hundred yards to the next light and runs smooth as hell. No miss while driving, great gas mileage. What else could it be?

      I have the same problem with a 2.0 beetle, had it for over a year and still can’t figure it out unless there’s a bad ring on that piston but then I think the misfire would be constant and a lot worse, I’m stumped too

    Thanks alot for your time and excellent information. I was thinking of doing the timing while im at it. Another issue im having is my driver door locks and unlocks, with key or keyless. But when I open the door the light doesnt come on, and the alarm activates within seconds. Seems like the door switch isnt working. Is it integrated with the electric door lock assembly at the door? Or is it a stand alone switch like older cars have. I try opening any other door and interior light comes on.

    i did the compression test on all four and it gave me this
    cyl 1: 105psi
    cyl 2: 220psi
    cyl 3: 198psi
    cyl 4: 70psi
    so im geussing that cylinder one is slightly bent and cylinder 4 is pretty well bent!!

    Any tips or tricks to do a crankshaft pulley side seal replacement on a 2000 aeg 2.0 engine in a golf? Sounds like a need several specialty tools to be able to do the seal. I see an oil mark coming straight down below the cranshaft pulley. I dont believe is my oil pan gasket.

    I changed the waterpump myself but i didnt think of butting it at tdc!! And im assuming i probably turned the cam too much!! Because of that the car threw the camshaft position sensor code!! So i put everything back at tdc and then it started up but really rough idle!! Then it threw another code!! Cylinder 4 misfire so i swapped the spark plug with the #1 and it did it again so i bought new spark plug wires!! I hoped it was only that and not bent valves but i geusse it is!! :/

    Hey Thomas 03 Jetta 2.0 manual transmission car idles kind of crappy and is misfiring as well have already change the plugs and wires. Car has noticeable loss of power as well as check engine light is constantly on but when it misfires the check engine light will start blinking then after probably 8 to 10 blinks stops and just stays on like it did before. Is this going to be the coil?

    • @EXOVCDS

      Probably coil if the plugs & wires are ok (the new parts).

    checked my plugs today all toasty dry and white with our additives ... seems fine at idle after a few seconds and on the level driving but when i hit the gas sounds like i got some weird exhaust farts or a bad egr ... not enough gas out a injector ?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  ปีที่แล้ว

      Could be a number of reasons. Use a scan tool to monitor engine sensor data... attach a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail and monitor pressure while driving (long fuel hose with gauge taped against the outside of the windshield)... make sure the ignition components are good.

    • @matthewgarland5944
      @matthewgarland5944 ปีที่แล้ว

      sounds like there hummin on freeway and on the level cruise but its kinda gutless and noisy gettn up to speed... after a manifold gasket change and newer exhaust its got a new garbling exhaust sound with the pedal but if i have any part of the exhaust off i dont hear it and its still kinda gutless ran scan tool with short and long fuel trims only 1 line shows up i got p420 so i guess its the rear cat o2 sensor but it looks toasty white too today im going to take off the bottom intake manifold see if i got a fly in the ports and check to see if my injectors are clicking

    Hey Thomas, thank for the great video. I got the P0304 Code for Cylinder #4 Misfire. Just like in your video, the spark plug #4 looks burned/covered in carbon so I replaced them all and I still have the misfire, I even try using an old cable I had thinking It could be the wire but nothing changed. What do you recommend? Should I replace the ignition coil? Thanks in advance.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Raul Adams Do you hear spark arcing to ground while the engine is running (ticking / clicking sound)? Have you sprayed the coil with a mist of water to see if things get worse? Could be coil, injector, mechanical issue... up to you where you want to go next.

    • @RaulAdams
      @RaulAdams 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will check for a ticking sound, I dont think so though. But if so, does that mean is the coil? If I spray the coil and it gets worse, does that mean the coil is bad too?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Raul Adams Either coil or plug wire... if you already changed the plug wire, then I would say coil. Yes, if it runs worse when wet... definitely ignition related. You can remove the coil pack and check it's body for cracks.

      Apply dielectric grease around the inside of the spark plug boot (to help prevent spark from shorting to ground ahead of the spark plug).

      Thanks much. Does the car smoke (blue)? Mine does not but should I get a compression test anyway. Just bought 2000 Jetta with 89k miles. Also, in this video, PCV hose was spongy. Mine is also, so I will replace. Should I also order PCV valve (top of oil fill) or just clean with carb cleaner?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ken Dash They don't have to blow blue to be burning oil... you'll get an idea of oil usage over time as you own the vehicle & inspect the plugs. Just clean the filler tower.

    Hi Thomas, replaced head gaskets, new sparks, oil fill pvc breather tube, etc... today and now have a rough idle where it almost shuts off car. Any idea what could cause that? '01 VW Beetle 2.0 GL, AEG engine. Thanks again for all your vids, have saved my tail feathers more times than I can count!

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is cam / crank timing correct? Align the engine to #1 TDC and send me pictures of the camshaft sprocket TDC mark and the flywheel TDC mark at the transmission. If you can't get to the transmission flywheel mark, send me a picture of the crank pulley When the camshaft is at TDC. fkh161@fkh171.ca Are the spark plug wires in the correct place? Are all the injectors plugged in correctly? Fault codes?

    • @goosebumpsmylegs
      @goosebumpsmylegs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll grab you some pics when I get home tonight. To be totally transparent, initially I tried "patching" up a torn breather hose (connects from the PVC oil fill assembly to the main air hose connected to the throttle assembly) after I changed the gaskets as a temp fix until I got a new one in, and it sucked a 1/2 inch piece of the rubber into the intake, down into the head... not good I know, but thought this would eventually burn itself down and out - it threw all the P300 codes of course, but after I vacuumed out the head, new sparks, etc... it drove and seemed fine until I noticed the idle situation.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you only replaced the "valve cover gasket"... my initial reply was about head gasket, because the timing belt has to be removed to replace it. If the cylinder head was never removed, the rubber piece could have gotten stuck between the head and an open valve. If the timing belt was never removed, cam & crank timing should be OK. Remove all the spark plugs and do a compression check. If compression is low on one of the cylinders, it could be that the rubber piece is still stuck.

    • @goosebumpsmylegs
      @goosebumpsmylegs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am mistaken then, I replaced the valve cover gasket & upper/lower intake manifold gaskets - NOT the head gasket as I am now seeing what it looks like on Autozone's website... this will be the next project! I only had to unbolt the timing belt bracket (plastic) and slide the cover away from the valve cover - that's a relief! I did try to cover the intake holes and shop-vac out the bits of rubber (which I am sure are just a gooey mess by now since I drove it in to work today). This was my first attempt at changing gaskets on anything, so I apologize for my ignorance! Do you recommend any product to clean the intake out? Sea Foam?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will clean itself out... if that is the problem.
      If something is keeping a valve open, it will eventually wear down / off and the valve will be able to sit correctly again. This is all just pure speculation... checking compression would confirm if that is the issue or not. Make sure that the intake manifold (upper & lower) are sitting / sealing correctly as well. If either one is not sitting flush, there could be vacuum leaks that affect the engine performance / idle. Double check everything that you did / touched. If things don't get better, do the compression test. If you touched the injector harness plugs, check those as well. The plugs need to click into place.

    I'm think of buying a beetle bug owner said it's smoking from the thermostat and misfiring is this a easy fix

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beetle's don't have a coolant temperature gauge / needle in the dash... only a blue / red warning light. If the thermostat is smoking and the engine is misfiring, then the engine may have had a major overheating incident in the past. In which case, possible cylinder head gasket / cylinder head repair may have to be done. Which engine? 2.0L, TDI or 1.8T?

    • @Sexyhah36
      @Sexyhah36 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      2.0

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The above applies to all of those engines... if you get the vehicle for cheap enough and it is in good shape otherwise, it might be worth putting money into it. Finding a vehicle with NO issues would be more ideal... yes, you might have to pay more initially, but chances are better that you will not end up with a money pit.

  • @MrsTiffanyMartinez
    @MrsTiffanyMartinez 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Thomas 👋!
    That moment when your Bug was just fine until you took her to *Big O Tires* for a simple oil 🛢 change & now your check engine light is blinking like a mo'fo!
    *Livid* would be an understatement!
    I have an app set up for next week to get her checked out. I need to have some much needed lab work done, you know bloodwork 💉 & such. It's about 10 mins each way. You think it would be safe to drive my beautiful Bug🚙 over there to Labcorp to get this done?
    I did ask my regular mechanic about this and he said, "I should be." I explained to him that I removed the gas cap and replaced it, you know, just to see just *maybe* it was something simple as a loose gas cap. Needless to say, it wasn't. Our garage filled with the smell of gas & the check engine light was still flashing when I started my Bug. So I just turned off my car left the garage door open and went back inside. Smdh
    *plus side* I just replaced the catalytic converter about 3 Summers ago, so at least it's not *again*. Had to replace for a second time because our state changed their emission rules...*money* 💰 💵💰
    Just hit *200K miles* in 2019. I got her in 2012.
    01 VW Beetle 2.0 GLS manual.
    Grateful for your time and energy♡
    Tiffany Martinez

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      01 Beetle does not shut off the fuel injector when a misfire is detected in a cylinder... so raw fuel exits the cylinder and then causes damage to the catalytic converter (if left for too long). I can't tell you not to drive the car... but it's better that you don't. Check your coil pack & spark plug wires.

      I had #3 and #4 occasionally misfiring until they blew up the ceramic insulators of the Bosch platinum plugs in those two cylinders. Seems it was that the ground strap from engine to body was not connected. I'd get shocked touching metal tool to spark plug insulator - ungrounded ignition. Replaced plats with solid core plugs (Bosch Super Copper) to keep that from happening. Managed to swap pieces of insulator from combustion chamber with rag dipped in STP (sticky stuff) on end of coat hanger. Car ran OK after this.

    • @EXOVCDS

      The easiest thing to do is to count the "shift" points when driving. A normal 4 speed transmission will only allow the shifter to move from Park to 1. A Tiptronic transmission shifter can be moved from D to + & - (to the right). A six speed transmission will let you do the same, but you will also see the gears in the instrument cluster... 1,2,3,4,5,6
