Sure there are fancy improvements in here, but for me, mechanical improvements will always trump the "flash". I like a good looking game, but i like a great "good looking" game more.
And I will add, having a 'prelude' setup to get through the first round is great as well. There's a lot going on, and 'skipping' round one for a few resources really was a good choice. Plus, the OCD in me likes there are now 3 rounds in every phase. 😁

I have played my friends copy of the base game just they are out of stock at the moment so I am going to get it. When I saw the sale it was one of those "move quick or lose out" so I just grabbed it and hoped it was worth the $.
I never understood why reviewers say « If you don’t like the original, this exapansion won’t change the way you feel about it ». What is an example of game that the expansion actually can change that? I’m really curious, I’m sure I am missing something.
Expansions rarely change a games core experience, they simply alter it in other ways. So unless your issue with a game was a bug or flaw in the design that the expansion patched, say like the first expansion for Twilight Imperium 3rd edition that made being first player an absolutely massive advantage, its not going to change your mind that often. Also, throwing good money after bad is what a lot of people do. "I didn't like X, maybe the expansion will help", and it rarely does.
One expansion that does dramatically change a game is the one for Civilization a new dawn, that almost totally overhauls the game. But that said, if you dont like its core "5 action card" system or civ games in general, it wont fix that
First game, play with the basic rules only. There is a lot to learn. The basic assistants just give you a simple starting action card. But thats about it. The variable player powers on the new cards really help more if you know the basics of what you are doing.
Great review Jarrod! Boy this seems like bloat. I never took the bait on this game largely because I have too much invested in a similar game - Terraforming Mars (Prelude + Hellas + Broken Token insert + sleeves). Same reason I probably won't be buying Ark Nova any time soon. Thx!
As a huge TM fan, i can get that. That said, it does present a very different style of puzzle while appealing to the same sort of skill set as TM. Main difference is Underwater cities has a finite number of actions, TM is as many actions as you can get in your machine. So I think both games can exist in a collection.
Hmmm...if the best thing are 8 starting cards...I'm not sure I need this. The only thing I'd like to see changed are those bloody awful 3 value resource tiles that take up more space than 3 resource tiles. It makes me fangry. Oh yes, the placky bubbles representing the cities, awful. Cardboard discs with great artwork please. Cardboard discs fit in the box after everything else has been punched out. :-) :-) What else can I rant about? Nothing, it's a brilliant game.
Give me a simple fun mechanical game change over the flashy chrome ones every day. PS. Thinking about just buying some wooden cubes for kelp, bionmatter etc as the tokens suck.

I played with the new starting cards last night, and wow, they were fun, and easy to incorporate into a strategy. UC keeps climbing up my list.
Those starting cards make such a difference. Way more than you would think at first glance

Absolutely. Unless otherwise mentioned an expansion is an add-on for a game that needs the core game.

Unpopular opinion... I don't like the double layer boards. They take up too much space in the box and are unnecessary.
I somewhat agree. Like, i dont mind them, i dont think they are worse. But they aren't the revelation to me they are to others.
