  • These camper steps have created some huge issues for us. If you own a similar style of camper step, you need to know about this specific problem. Today, we will cover the pros and cons of these camper steps from our past 36 months of RV living. We will also walk you firsthand through a recent event where we couldn't shut our camper door because of these steps.

On this particular video, were you not able to continue backing up? It looks like the steps would have cleared the pavement by backing up the rig a couple more feet?

    • @jonosborne2815
      @jonosborne2815 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

We have the same style steps but the legs have multiple adjustment holes. They have a pin on each side the you pull out and adjust each side individually.

    So…..
I had this problem, the remedy for me was to remove the extendable legs,,,, AND…… I used the manual level to raise the rig up a few a few inches. Boom…. Gave me the clearances I needed.

    • @carlphillips9312
      @carlphillips9312 หลายเดือนก่อน

Don't know if this has been mentioned, carry 2x8x6 boards under the wheels to get the clearance needed.

  • @CoddiwompleTravelers
    @CoddiwompleTravelers 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

We have run into this problem several times. So much so, that we now carry 4 - 2x8x4 boards. We can back the RV up higher to accommodate for the height difference and get the steps in a better position. Good video and a fair assessment of the new style steps!

We have these steps on our Solitude as well and we have a love/hate relationship. Pretty much every point you brought up is the same for us. Love the stability but its tough to have them out in some scenarios like truck stops, some camp sites. We have had to put wooden boards under ours many times to level them out. Hope you guys are doing well and safe travels!

We have had the same issue, so now i carry 12 inch by 12 inch by 2 inch slabs to raise my camper with when this situation occurs again. We have a favorite site at a local lake and this makes our solution less of headache. Keep up the good work Hanks, love your channel.

We just downgraded our steps from the solid step to the fold-out steps because we had a bunch of issues with ours not being long enough, being too long, etc. So we went with the fold-out and love them so far. Glad to see we aren't the only ones experiencing these problems.

Our current camper is our first camper with the solid steps and it’s taking some getting used to. I’ve experienced all of the issues you have gone over. But I love them more than the spring board steps we had before. The depth and stability of each step is better than what we had in our TT. Great video and thanks again.

We added the fold down steps to our first RV and ended up up in several of these instances. We couldn’t put down in storage and we gouged the door because the step was on top of a curb. The stability was great, though! Our new RV has the standard fold out stairs, but the bottom step has drop down stabilizing arms. We like this setup, because we can get into the RV when parked in storage. Your video pros and cons is spot on.

Hi guys I have the same exact steps on my camper, and we exchanged them out from the four step to the three step. We love the steps for their stability. This three step, has the adjustable legs at the bottom that go farther out or in your case of this video slide further in which would lower the step down on the ground even more so your door would not hit. Possibly that is the solution for you. I love your videos I think you guys are amazing. Wish you worked at my hospital you’d be great team members! Char

For me, intrusion is having campers next to us and behind us. However, that rarely happens. Intrusion is like y'all said, crossing over that imaginary line with anything, slideouts, extension cords, hoses, chairs, coolers, shade tents, tents, screen rooms, bicycles, etc, etc etc. It just bugs me but then again, a lot of little things bug me, just ask my wife.

It's nice to see you guys elevate our RV knowledge step by step. I feel like I've reached a higher RV knowledge each week, yep, you help us level up so we can measure up to any challenges that arise. These videos are a true extension of your original mission. To reach out and help others rise to thier true potential one rung at a time. So I'll close with a Tanks Hanks before you guys block me after all of the elevated ladder puns. ps please pet Dexter for me! Be safe out there!

The short of backing into the gutter was the first of your videos I ever saw! Since we have a Class A, we do not have your step issue. I used to use auto level, but as I was told by others and true, auto level sometimes lifts the RV higher than necessary. I do manual now. If the right side steps need just that little bit more, you might be able to use the jacks to raise up the right enough to make it work.
We just took road trip of all (4) historic covered wooden bridges in Missouri. Had a great time with the wife! Best wishes, Kevin

I have a very similar rig, truck and all lol. We pull to the Smokies, Florida etc and we have come across these raised pads, which I like btw… one option to prevent encroaching on your neighbor is to bring you rv up on blocks or boards to clear the pad for your steps.

Howdy y’all. We are actually staying in one of the CG in Pigeon Forge that you have stayed at. When we were parking we found the patio was high enough to cause our stairs to bind up on the door as you describe. You are exactly right about the steps. Pros and cons. We had pull out steps on our TT and we really wanted these in our 5er. We have had the "won't go all the way down" thing happen, if you're at it long enough it will happen! Good tips in the comments for workarounds. Great tip about cleaning before storing. We have learned the hard way, what's on the steps ends up in the rig! Keep up the good work.

Great video! Glad we aren't the only ones that have issues with these stairs. We've only been doing this for two months and already had issues with the steps twice. Once we didn't notice and the steps were too high. We went to release the extensions and they fell right on the ground! Another issue we found is getting the steps back into the camper when we stop at a gas station or Wal-Mart for an overnight. We had one place that the steps were facing toward where the cars had to go by and we weren't comfortable leaving them out. Love watching your videos and maybe we will see you out there sometime!

We looked at several step solutions for our HitchHiker before settling on the Glow Step Revolution by Torqlift. A lot of the cons you mentioned led us to the GSR. We like how it is adjustable at the top and bottom. When we are at a campsite that slopes, we have a small step that we use to make that first step not so big. We'll worth the money. Stop over next time you are passing through, the welcome mat is always out!

You guys brought up some really excellent points concerning the kind of steps that's installed on your trailer. We've had the traditional folding steps on the three tailers we've owned. We've had the 3 step kind and the 4 step kind. There were times with the 3 step kind that were to high to step into the trailer so I packed a 4" x 12" x 2' board to place under the steps. With the 4 step kind we've had instances where the bottom step will not open all the way. You guys brought the fact that serious accidents can happen if care is not taken using trailer steps of any kind. We were camping and I was letting the dogs out for their last potty break before bedtime. They all charged it the door at the same time and our old dog was knocked off the step and broke her leg. It was awful. I drove to a 24 hour emergency vet where I had to tell my old friend goodbye. So now since we've learned a hard lesson our dogs are leashed and only one goes down the steps at a time. Keep up the good work!

Have the same steps on our Coachmen that I installed replacing the original flimsy folding ones. Love these much better. Haven't had this issue too much. I put a rubber stair tread on the ground so the legs aren't directly on the ground and cushions them. Haven't had your particular issue but I would use either levelling blocks or wood blocks to bring the whole camper up and/or remove the rubber pad. We don't usually choose sites that have concrete pads.

Good Video, I own GD 22MLE and have fold down steps. It came with the other type, which were not stable. You did the right thing, which was adjust your RV position. I stayed at Raven Rock State Park in NC, and they had a 6x4 between RV pad and picnic table. I have hard time adjusting where to place the RV. And by the way, the picnic area was a step down from the RV pad. I will agree the fold down steps a hassle at that camp ground.

    Kyle & Renee,
First, great video with practical advice. We have not run into the raised patio issue yet (give us time) but I do have the problem you mentioned that, when the 5th wheel is in storage I cannot lower the steps to get inside. The steps would hit the RV next to me and don't have enough clearance to fully lower. Removing the steps is, I suppose, an option but my solution for those times I just have to get into the trailer is to pull it out of the storage space far enough to open the door and lower the steps, then put it all back when done.
Other than these inconveniences, I have to say that we really, really like the solid stability of these steps over those on our previous 5th wheel. Thanks again for all you do.
    Jim

We have the 3 step version on our GD Imagine 2500RL travel trailer. Haven't run into the problem with it being too far down to allow the door to close but have run into the legs not reaching the ground at full extension. After that happened the first time we found the Quick Products JQ-S150 platform step. It's the perfect width to support the extendable legs on the steps and gives plenty of first step to get to the stairs.

hi Hanks! its Lynn and Tim, we have a 2019 Cardinal Fifth wheel with those steps, we can tell you from experience those steps even being a little difficult are the best to have. when we had out diesel pusher with 2 steps to get in was more Dangerous that any rv we have owned. we have have found after having our fifth wheel with this brand of step is the safest and most reliable one on the market. we have run into every situation that you described, but with shims or pads put under the feet works terrific , for those pit stops just know the distance the steps come out and keep the measuring tape handy and take a quick measurement before calling it good. lynn and I have rv for over 20 years now and 4 full time, the biggest lesson we have learned slow down look at the situation and both people put there input in. we Love you Guys, safe travels and keep up the Great videos.

I’ve used Torklift Glow steps on my last and my current 5th wheel. I have never had a problem with them. Installation is east and they make a door mount and under mount version. I think they’re the best RV steps made.

We’ve had both types of steps and I love the more ride steps. The other required we use a stool because the first step was so high. I have had issues with setup with the more ride steps but I still feel they’re better and way more stable.

If you can not lower the concrete....raise the RV, leveling blocks or wood under the tires. As far as communicating with each other, ditch the phones and get two pairs of walkie talkies on different channels. Kyle talks into first channel as Renee listens on that channel, Renee talks on second channel as that is the one Kyle is listening to. This worked for my wife and I as well as others I have shared this tip with. Please let me know how it works out for you. We used inexpensive walkie talkies with two channels, because of the short distance between each other we never had any problems. I also have to tell you I very much enjoy watching your channel and Maybe some day I will get to meet you in person. Happy travels Stephen

We have a 2021 Rockwood Roo and love our steps because the feet are adjustable to so many height changes. They are MORryde- I think the new ones are called StepAbove. Can't count the number of times we've been able to adjust the feet to be able to close the door or to compensate for a patio or high ground. You can even extend one foot longer than the other for uneven surfaces. Very solid steps!

This was a great video with great info on those steps. I saw other people fooling around with those type of steps and kept repositioning. Now I know why. My 5th wheel has folding steps, that fold up under the door. I like them they work well. Thanknyou for the great info.

I love these steps, they are on my TT. When the TT levels it's quite high so we often have to extend the feet on the steps to make up distance, even on concrete pads.

I totally agree on those steps. We have experienced everything you spoke of, on multiple occasions. So much so that they have become a deal breaker for us. Both Jayco Eagle and Grand Design Reflection won't change out the steps for the traditional ones. It is only available aftermarket with modification of the trailer. We hate those steps so much that we walked away from both trailers. Continuing the search for a replacement of our current rolling back porch. The problem is not the gas stations, parks, RV parks, etc. it's those screwball steps. In this case old style pull out is so much better. Thanks Hanks.

So coming from a fellow camper (with fold out steps), I would have measured the distance between the gravel and the pad. Height wise that is. Then built up blocks or whatever to raise the camper higher, i.e pad is 1 inch higher than gravel, build the blocks 2 or 3 inches up for all the wheels. I know it is a lot of blocks but just my approach. Keep up the good work and safe travels. WT

Sadly a lot of RV sites are very narrow which I think will not change in the future. Maybe a solution is taking the quad steps and replacing them with the triple solid steps. We have a solid step that is two steps with a decent amount of room for the extender legs. This might help with some of these issues..you guys rock!

We have been RVing full-time for the last three years. We have a travel trailer that’s 38 feet. But it did come with the step above steps. Our biggest problem has been at gravel campsites and having to pick all the gravel out of the feet and if you don’t and you lift up the stairs the rocks will fall on you and if they get under the black part of where the door closes you will not be able to close your door and it will make a big boom. I remember falling down my stairs once because our friction anti-wind door conveniently smacked me when a gust of wind blew and the door smacked me and it threw me off the side of the steps. I’m 28 years old but when you’re falling from the top step of your camper that’s still quite a fall !

Greetings from sunny Florida. Great info. I got my Thanks Hanks t-shirt that was delivered to my sister’s house. I’ll be sure to wear it on the flight back tomorrow to Perú. Yesterday I went to a local RV dealer to see some travel trailers. The salesman asked me “What’s keeping you from buying today?” I said “I live in Lima, Perú.” He asked “Where’s that?” SMH

#ThanksHanks. We have a Reflections with the same type of step, our last State Park in Idaho left us very high on that side. I hade to use 4x4’s to get the steps on the ground. Then the step was so high, my five foot wife had a difficult time stepping up. Had to make a trip to Wally World to pick up a step stool for her. A large pain. We are not a fan of the steps but not sure on how to fix it yet. We will keep you posted! Thanks for the great video.

EXCELLENT content! Speaking as a guy who tried to gain inches and then broke the screw top on the sewer top, as a wife is barking "your too close"; it just happens regardless. I did go into town and get the parts and fixed it though. Having had numerous RV's I just gravitate to the three step aluminum type. The metal ones are heavy. I Like your type &are more stable but I don't like all the dirt & water inside that come with them. You are correct about RV storage and the steps. We have a smaller aluminum 4 fold out leg platform type step we use as the first step if we need due to heights. Keep on, keeping on.

Thanks for great info, as always. Love our steps that are similar, but drop down at the top so they don't interfer with the door closing. They only have three steps. They are super sturdy and the feet are adjustable so right now one leg is on grass and one is on asphalt without a problem. We are in a trailer. We do need to account for space when parking, though. These work for us, but each rig and person's needs are different.

If you take a 2x10 or 2x12 and cut it into 4 blocks that you can put under each tire, that will raise the rv 1 1/2”. That should raise the rv enough to allow you to lower your steps. Plus you can use the blocks to put under the steps when the steps can’t reach the ground.
    Great topic. 👍

You mentioning falling down the RV steps... Oh yeah! I kind of remember those nights! Usually happens just as the earth stopped turning on me, causing me to loose my balance, suddenly causing me to get a very good and close look at the ground I wouldn't have seen otherwise. Most of that day is a blur though...
Well, WE DONE AND DID IT!!!
We got back to the house very early this morning from our trip to Texas to get the 5th wheel. 2018 Jayco North Point 377RLBH. Mid bunk house model at 43 feet and WHAT A RIDE!!!! She's a BEAST!!
All the comfort is here with the space for me to duck and avoid any of the wife's backhands when I might say something "improper".
Well guys... Once we get everything all worked out and fixed up we'll be out there and following those around I've met here on these internets things!!! I do hope to "accidentally" bump into you two one day to finally show you that I'm not "REALLY" some weirdo or insane gut who escaped from somewhere some time ago!!!
This is one adventure I look forward to.... this whole "full timer" thing.... I heard there are people JUST LIKE ME out there doing this same thing!!!!
Be safe guys! With respect and the love for both y'all!!! See ya!

We have a 2019 GD Momentum 328 that came with the pull down steps. Fortunately our frame still had the cut out for the old style collapsible fold up steps. It was built with the black skirt over the opening. I paid to have the dealer cut out the skirt; take out the pull down steps; and install some old style steps that we had from a KZ RV. On the KZ we had switched out steps and installed Torklift Glow Steps. We went this route because we knew the pull down steps would block our door in our storage area. We sold the removed pull down steps. The RV industry doesn't always think things thru because they NEVER "eat their own dog food". The Torklift steps are also very stable & still fold up and out of the way. Also no dirt & water dumping into the inside. We didn't put Torklift on the 328, because we found the bounce you have with the old style step did not bother us. We also have a Safety Step Folding Platform from etrailer for the occasional times the distance from the last step is too tall.

We have a travel trailer that had the old traditional steps, and had to replace our brackets due to a crack/break in the brackets. We installed the Torque Lift steps, and they are the best. The Torque Lift steps that we have fit in the cut out where the old steps fit. They now make a set that fits inside the camper like your steps do, but these steps accordion down in a smaller space, and accordion out with more adjustability options . They allow for adjustment for close proximity to another camper or vehicle.

Once again, the Hank's bring it! Sounds like there's a business opportunity here for a "do all" step. These comments are what works for us. We have the fold down style on our GD TT. I'm 6'5" and 240 lbs and love the solid feel we have with them. It never feels unsafe for us. Other than the firm ground contact of the lift steps, there are just too many cons for us. The Smart steps don't appeal to us at all. Kind of a more complicated idea. We saw that style a lot on off grid slide-on campers to accommodate the universe not being the same distance away from the truck each time. Just look at all the opportunities to pinch a finger. Kind of a "step" in the right direction, just not there yet with that idea. We want safe, functional, reliable steps without making more work for ourselves. Thanks for sharing!

Our Jayco SLX 8 has these and we run into every one of the issues mentioned. Sometimes when on unlevel ground I just leave one of the feet not clicked into place and over extend it by maybe a half inch so that it doesn't want to retract under load. It helps with that situation.

Good info to consider if you are thinking about getting those kind of steps. We have been using the regular pull out steps that came with the RV for 7 years now and we have thought about replacing them but I am not sure about the fold up into the RV. I would love to have a sturdier step with a platform but they do come with a hefty price tag, so maybe next year, this year it’s new brakes and bearings instead of new steps :)

Love you guys and appreciate the videos, I actually really like our Step Above steps over all the other styles of steps. Yes you have to be cognizant of how you park, and make sure the steps make proper contact with the ground, sweep them off, etc. However, I've had the folding steps pop out going down the road too, and they are not nearly as stable as the Step Above steps. You said it correctly at the end of the video, there is NO perfect solution (actually in the RV World).

We have a 25 foot bumper pull with a rear entry door and the same steps you have. We have run into every issue you mentioned in the video. The most common is when you have a concrete patio at your site. We find that one side of the step is on the pad and other is off. Another common issue that there is a tree right where the steps are coming down. So we re-adjust, re-adjust and re-adjust.
