    You forgot to add the hypnotic Border Collie stare. I bred, raised, and trained Border Collies, and I've seen a single dog stare down a fully grown Hereford bull who didn't want to go where she was herding him to. After about two minutes of the staring contest, he gave up and trotted meekly to the gate.

      Oh yes the stare!
      My Amstaff was attacked by a border collie when he was a puppy. (The border collie’s owner’s fault: that poor dog was rarely ever taken out, didn’t get enough exercise and was improperly socialised; no wonder that poor animal was as mad as they come)
      As a result of this attack he’s never quite relaxed around border collies, especially when they stare. He’ll only stop tensing up when he’s 100% certain I’ve seen the border collie and am in control of the situation.

      I have a BC mix and she does it whenever she sees other animals. It’s definitely something. She also bites the heel of my shoes if she wants me to run or play with her, which I’ve read is another BC trait.

    • @SaraLovelace1
      @SaraLovelace1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oddda5956 She's herding you! Border Collies work by gently nipping at the heels of livestock to get them moving and then again if they aren't following the herd. My BC did this to my sister and myself when we were younger... it's hilarious to realize you're getting herded.

    I've only ever had 1 dumb cross Border and she was nuts, they have brains and as much madness as those brains. She was the exception; all of the madness and none of the brains. No idea what she was crossed with, but, she still herded other animals, her favourite was our 3 cats.

I've watched them literally get within 6 feet of either of our Australian Shepard mixes, then they break out of 'stealth' mode and the race is on. When my parents bought their farm they got a border collie in with the deal. He was hilarious. He was hell on wheels vs anything four legged. 3AM on a summer night and a rabbit in the garden? We were all awake. But never expect him to guard the house. Nope. Anyone and everyone could drive up the lane and he would be "Oh! Two-legs! Welcome to our farm! Let me show you where the unlocked front door is! So nice to see you! Have a nice visit!"

    We had a border collie and black lab mix, and she was the sweetest dog. She loved babies, she would just sit next to me when I was holding our firstborn, and just want to cuddle, and once he was big enough to be walking around, she'd lay on the floor next to him so he could climb all over her. Like, actively avoid the kid-free areas because having her ears pulled on and eyes accidentally jabbed was worth having the baby on her (we trued to prevent him hurting her, of course, but accidents happen). She knew exactly where the yard boundaries were, and we could have her off leash in our open yard and she wouldn't cross her boundaries. She knew exactly where the kids were supposed to be in the yard, and would herd them with her body to keep them where they were supposed to be. Sadly, we lost her at 7 years old to surprise health issues.

      I second your comment - we had a yellow lab and border collie mix and she was my absolute best friend through childhood. She was a dearheart and was with me until I went off to college - seems like she knew I was grown up and her role was finished. Devastated when she left us.

      Sounds so much like Roots, my old American Staffordshire female. Looked like Petey from the Lil Rascals, and *loved* kids so much. On walks, if she saw a kid coming, she'd lie down on the grass and wait. She had terrible arthritis, but all she wanted was for them to climb all over her and love her.
      I adopted her as an adult, and she also had surprise health issues a year or so later (a condition called ITP), so I lost her around the same age you lost yours. Heartbreaking! 💔

      @redfailhawk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Feel this. I had the most friendly chow chow as a teen. Just lost her earlier this year at 14. She didn't necessarily love kids but I'd bribe her for trunk or treat by giving the youngest kids nuggets to offer her for pets. (Her bane was anyone under six.) She was SO GENTLE with fingers of all sizes and very polite and would give anyone kisses. I got 13.5 years with her and had to make the call for her this year. Hardest thing I've ever done. I had her for half of my life and I'm devastated I don't wake up to see her fluffy face anymore. Got a new pup with a similar personality, a husky-apbt mix, who just adores any kid she sees.

      My sister in law gave me some left over food she had prepared for her dog one time (her dog was on a raw meat diet at the time). I tried my bc on it, and she separated all the different meats into piles before eating any of it. She took out the chicken, put it in a pile, then the roo shoulder, sat it aside, and pulled out the pork leaving the minced beef in the bowl. Then she ate each pile one by one. lol
      And as far as intelligence, when she was 9 weeks old I put a bell by the back door to start house training her. As soon as I saw her sitting by the door wanting to go out, I picked her up and gently booped the bell with her nose then praised her and let her out. An hour later, I heard the bell ring, and she was sitting at the door ready to go out. I only had to show her one time. Border collies are amazing.
