I absolutely love it. By luck, I discovered the effect while night shooting a downtown's waterfront. I didn't need ND filters for this . A couple of months ago I bought a cheap set on Amazon just to play with during the day time. You certainly get what you pay for!! I have a Canon Pro-10 and print up to 25"x12.5" (custom paper setting). You need good glass to print at that size.
Mr. Ruffo, your art saved my life, I pulled my old D7100 out again and started shooting again and found a reason to live and love to live. Now it goes everywhere with me, and I find beauty in all this creation we call home. thank you sir! thank you so much!
This is the 2nd video I've watched by Attilo Ruffo. As an experienced photographer and teacher of photography, I am again wowed by Attilo's clarity and humanity. In addition to learning the skills of the lesson, Attillo shares his total and very human experience in taking a photograph. I find this approach inspirational but sadly absent in most, if not all, the the videos I've seen.
Eat pasta; take better photos! Man, I love that tip! I'm really enjoying your channel. Your photos are lovely, and your explanations very clear and helpful. This is a delight. Thank you!
Thanks for another great tutorial video. A couple of questions on ND grads please: 1. How do you align the border of the grad if you put a really dark filter on first, like a 10 or 15 stop? Can you still see through the viewfinder or display to position the boarder correctly? 2. I think I now understand roughly the theory about how one might choose the number of stops on the ND grad, but what are the guide lines of when to use a soft, medium or hard ND grad? 3. I now have a Haida M-10 with CPL and I also got a 10 stop ND filter. Which NG grad might be a safe first filter for long exposure landscape photography use? Thank you, Sam
Good questions. I place my grad ND in the filter holder and/or CPL and take the initial shot to determine the correct exposure BEFORE adding my ND filters.
Hi Attilio and greetings from Italy. Thanks for all the content you publish, it's of great value and with a style that I like. Probably I'm missing something but I understood that you'll have put the tools of the trade in the comments. Any chance to get it ? All the best
I know this is several years old, but just want to say thanks so much for a very helpful, informative, and clearly presented tutorial on taking long exposures. I will be in Venice, Italy in late September (first time!) and I'm so looking forward to attempting to capture some of those iconic shots -- gondalas in the foreground, across the lagoon, looking towards San Giorgio; as well as along the Grand Canal. Your videos are making me feel a bit more confident that I'll be able to capture some shots I'm pleased with. Thanks again!
Another awesome video, Attilio. Not many photographers share so much information so openly, so it's so refreshing to see you do that. Taking the time to do this very informative video and share all the links in the youtube info is just another generous gift to us. So thanks.
You must do a video how much time did bulb take and others.I had search on TH-cam I don't found any...So if you do that i will enjoy because i am and amateur but i love take long exposure but i dont know how many second it takes or how many minutes....So I hope you will do this for me next video....
Your thorough technical understanding and calm demeanor really create helpful and inspiring content that is pleasant to watch. Thank you for sharing your skills and beautiful photographs.
Agreed! But this video really tugged at my heart strings. I used to live in Monterey and I miss it sooooo much. now I’m in El Paso near White Sands national Monument. I wonder if there are any cool effects that could be created there using long exposure photography??? Maybe if the winds were blowing and the sands were shifting. But then wouldn’t Sand get in the lens and camera, sigh.
Man, you made that pasta look pretty good! I didn't realize that is what was missing from my long exposure photos but I'll try that next time. I do like long exposures of water a lot. I also like what I call "longish exposures" of about 1/2 second to one second where there is a definite blur in the water but still some churn detail that shows the power. Long exposures of clouds really don't appeal to me quite so much. Sometimes you get them like it or not, but often I minimize the clouds if I can.
I love the simplicity and Clarity of your clear and detailed explanations. Well thought-out tutorials even for a beginner to understand and not insult the seasoned Pro.
Great explanation , but never leave the tripod alone near waves or water my friend, if a big wave cames in or wind it will drop it down and that will ruin your day and wallet
thank you for the effort and the sharing. i am very excited to continue my learning of long exposure photography by watching your very helpful YT vids. BIG thumbs up.
I totally agree with you on the look that a long exposure can creates, that’s one of the reasons I mostly love shooting LE shots. keep up the fantastic work.
I think I just found my new favourite photographer and youtuber.. I really love your approach and your technique. I hope I will be able to take pics like you one day.
I am just about to watch this vid 😁 I've watched 2 mins in and I wanted to say that I think your info is the best on utube I tottaly love your work and your brilliant in explaining it many many thanks going to carry on watching now lol happy Christmas
excellent video. thank you for sharing your expertise. on equestion....why did you specifically choose a 15 stop filter. what determines the type of filter that you use ?
Thanks once again sir ! You have left me speechless with the simplicity of your videos which are so easy to understand and give so much to learn ! Regards
Thank you for this video. I love how so passionate and not stressful this video is. That, after all is the purpose of photography, enjoying the scenery. Thank you
Great information on long exposure work. And great to find a landscape photographer working nearby! Everyone else I watch seems to be in UK, it’s nice to see how experienced photographers shoot areas I can actually get to. Cheers.
So far, I have not done any long exposure photography. This is about to change! Thanks for sharing your workflow and the inspiration to give this a solid effort. Cheers from BC!
I like the idea of of hanging a bag off the side of your tripod for holding the intervalometer and gear. I normally tie the cord around a point on the tripod
Hello Attilio! Thank you very much for your entertaining and informative look into Long Exposure Photography :) I am actually getting started in this field but I don't have any LEE ND Filters or anything cause I'm still working my way up into buying these. I have a Nikon D750, just bought it around 2 months ago and it is an awesome camera. What I do usually for long exposures in day is take around 100 or 150 photos depending on my shutter speed and take these images and combine them with Photoshop CC Classic into one image which in turn gives me a long exposure and improves sharpness and reduces noise which unlike the ND Filters which only darken the scene. So I use this formula: Shutter Speed * number of pictures = Exposure. They also turn out good :) With the ND Filters it's really easy to use instead of spending a lot of time to combines these images in Photoshop to produce almost the exact same effect.
I found the passion in long exposures because of you, so thank you for that. Would it make sense to add the soft grad filter first and then add the ND 10- stop. Much thanks again for your great video and sharing your experience.
Thank you Maurice, I am really glad to read this! :-) I prefer to put the squared sealed filter first, so that it will avoid any possible light leak... and that is why I have the graduated filter after...
Super helpful! I love how you described the process once you set up the camera and how you calculate exposure. I'm in San Luis Obispo County, I look forward to trying these techniques.
Thank you very much for such an informative, excellent video. I just purchased the Nikon 20mm f1.8, and I am very excited to try it out. I appreciate your generosity in your sharing all your tips and tricks. Some professionals are not really willing to share those things in such great detail as you do. Grazie mille!!!
Thanks very much especially for your tips on the tripod and ballhead you use to get these great results. I've just discovered your videos and am enjoying working my way through them!
Excellent presentation. Love your step by step way and the generous details of your technics. One of the best I have ever seen. I will now subscribe to your channel. Thanks very much. You are generous, clear and make me feel to go outside and of course, have Italiano pasta before !

Very good video. What happens when light decreases with sunset, or clouds appears and cover sun. Your initial exposure reading was taken with much more light?
Thanks Luis! As the light decreases, the exposure will be longer... that’s why at sunset is always better to go a little longer than what the app would suggest!
Thanks for sharing your expertise with long exposure photography. I really appreciated your comment about the extra shoes at the end! I'm experimenting with long exposure and editing now. It is fun!
WOW what a great video from a master who makes things so easy. The link you have shared for the filters, I did not see a 15 stop comes with the package. Can you tell me which ones I need to get and also how the ring is mounted on the lens. The last question is what app do you use to get the right amount of stops (filters to use). I am an armature and hobbyist and learning a lot from you.
Thanks mate. The filter holder is mounted on the lens through a lens adapter of the same diameter of your lens, here it is a link to the 15 stops ND filter amzn.to/2BMhJ74
