  • I've used Nikon Z5s for a few months on over 100 real estate photography gigs, allowing me to put this camera to the test. Unlike unboxing and first-impression reviews, this episode is about real-world use of the Nikon Z5, how it fares to other cameras I've used, and tips for making the most of it. Below are links mentioned in the video, as well as chapter jump-links so you can skip ahead:

    I totally agree, it is a pro camera if one knows how to use it, I have been using it for 2 years now for real estate, nightclub photography, events, portraits, and it's awesome

    A good photographer that knows his craft brings out the best in most cameras. I love those interior shots the colors are really well balanced and punchy. Good work thank you, and yes a good review with samples.

    I appreciate a review from someone who actually used the camera. Most camera reviewers on TH-cam don’t seem to know much about the camera they’re reviewing…or photography.

    Nathan this is a great review and perfect timing for me! I was on a real estate shoot last weekend and my D780, which I bought last year and loved, fell out of the back of my SUV, crashing to the pavement. Doh! Thankfully I have PPA insurance, but I think it will be totaled and I'm awaiting a final repair estimate. In the meantime, I've been renting a Z5 for a week while I decide what to do and really like it so far. I too was skeptical that Nikon calls the Z5 an entry level camera, but I found myself looking at the Z6ii or Z7 anyway as a result of their marketing. It has been a great performer so far, and your recommendation seals the deal for me to get one, and maybe if my D780 is repairable, it will be my backup. I didn't have a backup camera, but now I know that I need one. It will take a month before I get the D780 back from the shop, if it's repairable. Your detailed setting recommendations are very helpful and I'll put them to use right away. As for the Z series bracketing button shortfall (I used the side bracketing button all the time on my D780) I decided to assign bracketing to the Fn1 button on the front. Bam! Quick and easy access with one step without scrolling across back screen menu. Thanks again for your great work and insights. I continue to be a fan. Rick

    Hi Nathan, great video as usual. I have a question. You may have addressed this in another video but I have not come across it. What is the reason for the 20mm outdoors. Is it not possible to use the Tokina 16-28 for outdoor shots too. Thanks.

      Thanks! Flare, focal length, composition, and quality. I talk more about this in my exterior book, here's a link if you'd like to check that out: amzn.to/3yPWezB

    Thanks for your awesome review of the Z5. Very thorough. I’m excited to try the Z5 at F8 ISO 320. Have you tried the Z6 at F8 ISO 320 and received the same exposure outcome, or does the Z6 require 7.1? Thanks for your excellent, consistent methods.

    • @NathanCoolPhoto
      @NathanCoolPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! The Z6 works just as well, but not my recommendation for interior REP (only one card slot, the Z5 has two). BTW, you can pick up a new Z5 at about 30% off right now at amzn.to/3BX8oct

    Great video! I'm just starting out with the same setup with the same Tokina, is there any reason I shouldn't use this lens for exterior shots and video until I'm actually making money and able to afford another body and lens? Making my way through all of your books too, thanks for all the great content!

    • @NathanCoolPhoto
      @NathanCoolPhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Flare, focal length, composition, and quality are things to consider on exteriors versus interior cameras. I talk more about this throughout my real estate photography series, especially in the exteriors book, here's a link if you don't have that one yet: amzn.to/3cgkJyi

    Hello Nathan, thank you for your detailed review. I’m into real estate photography and I’m used to shoot with a D800, I’m considering to buy a Z5 to upgrade a little bit and (hopefully) have some more dinamic range without braking the bank…do you think that is worth the money for a Z5 or not? Thanks!

    Hi Nathan: Another question regarding the suggested camera set. I can not find a Tokina 16-28 lens profile in Lightroom's profile lens correction drop down menu. Is there a way to add such a lens correction to Lightroom for that lense? Thanks!

    • @NathanCoolPhoto
      @NathanCoolPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      You should be able to pick it manually from their drop down menus, then make a preset.

    If your exterior bracket / timer was set to U1, U2 or U3, would it then retain that info after the camera was turned off? It does on my D7200. I'm looking at getting into a Z5, so that would be good to know. When I was shooting without a remote trigger, I set U2 for flash shots with a 5 second delay to give me time to get into position for a hand-held flash shot and U1 was for ambient shots on a 2S delay to allow the camera to steady.

    • @NathanCoolPhoto
      @NathanCoolPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      User settings on the Z series cameras don't retain bracketing settings.

    Great video.
    The biggest issue for me compared to my D750/850 is that it doesn't have a button/switch for MF/AF, nor for bracketing on the camera body

    • @NathanCoolPhoto
      @NathanCoolPhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You just simply use the i menu, which is fast and easy. Also see this portion of my review where I show how to utilize/customize it for bracketing: th-cam.com/video/j4tdZVdi1bE/w-d-xo.html And of course for AF to MF you can do that on the lenses I show in this review.

      I assign fn2 to bracketing. I also assign lens fn button on the lens to continuous high. Works great. Using Z6 and Nikon 14-24mm.

    do you prefer shooting with a DSLR or a mirrorless?

  • @myownalias
    @myownalias 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    From a quality point of view, is a mirrorless camera worth it? If I used the viewfinder to take photos, it'd make more sense to upgrade, to see the exposure, but I shoot 100% of my real estate photos using the back screen, I cannot remember the last time I looked through the viewfinder for real estate.

      It's much more than just that, it's about time and money and "all things considered". You might want to watch the Background chapter th-cam.com/video/j4tdZVdi1bE/w-d-xo.html for why, and also this chapter th-cam.com/video/j4tdZVdi1bE/w-d-xo.html on the Flambient workflow.

    Hi Nathan: Just purchased your recommended setup. Namely the Nikon Z5, FTZii adaptor, and Tokina 16-28. I use the Godex XPro in the camera's hotshot to trigger my Godox AD200. So my setup is exactly like the one in your video. For some reason the flash will not fire. The trigger seems to be paired with the flash as it registers any power change correctly, but will not fire. It worked fine on my Nikon D7200. Is there perhaps a change that needs to be made in one of the camera's menus. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • @NathanCoolPhoto
      @NathanCoolPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like flash is not enabled in the camera. Go to the "Shooting Menu", then "Flash mode", and set it to "Fill Flash" or "Rear Curtain sync". If this doesn't work, try a speedlight directly in the hot-shoe. If the speedlight doesn't fire, then there's something wrong with the camera or with the settings. If the speedlight does fire but the trigger won't, then something is wrong with the trigger. Here's a link to the Z5 online manual for flash mode if you need it: onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z5/en/12_on-camera_flash_photography_04.html

      @@NathanCoolPhoto Thanks Nathan! For some reason the single pin adaptor was not making good contact with the camera. I simply pushed on the adaptor's single pin and it reseated itself, then worked fine. Thanks again. Loving the set-up you recommended and had my first shoot with it yesterday. The images are extremely sharp. Only undesirable difference I see is that the frames, especially the ambient frame is extremely warm. Will try to figure out what to do about that, and plan on watching your video on white balance using K instead of auto. I did use the "nature" light see suggested but images are still extremely warm, so onto trying K setting instead for interiors.

    • @NathanCoolPhoto
      @NathanCoolPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great! But the ambient shot's WB doesn't matter if you do flambient correctly: setting the ambient shot's layer to Luminosity blending mode. If you're using Normal blending mode then you're not doing the flambient process correctly.

    What "metering mode" do you suggest using on the Nikon Z5 for interior photography?

    • @NathanCoolPhoto
      @NathanCoolPhoto  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      All REP work I teach is done with manual settings so metering modes don't apply. Not sure if you've checked out my courses yet, which cover this, but here's a link: LearnRE.NathanCool.com
