    www.220volt.hu/
    0:00 Intro
    1:21 Specs
    Z5 sports a newly designed 24 megapixel full-frame sensor with IBIS, which works insanely well!
    5:04 Autofocus settings
    The Z5 has Auto Area, Wide Area, Dynamic area and single point AF. Most of the time I was happy with the Auto Area AF setting, it automatically focused on the subjects closer to me, and found the faces if there were.
    5:52 Eye-Af
    In Auto-Area AF mode, the Z5 can find faces and eyes, if set in the Menu. By default it focuses on the closer eye, but you can jump between the eyes with the joystick
    6:56 Subject tracking
    The same square box as we've gotten used to so far. Works well, but the size is not adjustable
    7:37 Burst speed
    This is where Nikon made the only compromise in the specs: only 4.5 fps. It could surely do more, but probably Nikon did not want to make competition for the Z6
    7:54 Animal Eye AF
    Almost the same as I've found in the Z50. It did an outstanding job on a bright-fured dog, finding the eyes even from several meters!
    However, with a dark-grey dog, the Eye AF just wouldn't activate...
    10:10 iMenu
    10:32 Customisation
    Almost every button is customizable, and even the control rings on the Z lenses. Here I show what you can use the focus ring on the lens for.
    11:25 Manual focusing
    11:58 Ports
    12:23 Kit lens test
    Though the 24-50 mm f/4-6.3 lens is small, feels cheap, has poor aperture, it actually delivers pretty good overall sharpness!
    13:57 IBIS
    The image stabilisation delivers what it promises! I could easily handhold 1/8 s shutter speed with the 85mm lens!
    16:18 Self-timer
    17:18 High ISO performance
    Though the Z5 has a sensor made with BSI technology, which is supposed to be inferior, the high ISO performance is actually pretty good!
    18:15 Dynamic range / ISO invariance test
    Quite surprisingly, the Z5 has an excellent dinamic range, shadows can be pushed up by 5 stops with no noticeable color noise banding
    19:28 RAW file size
    Z5 offers 14 and 12 bit RAW files, both with lossless and lossy compressed format. To my surprise, the lossy compressed setting produced only slightly smaller files.
    20:12 Battery power time
    I could not specifically test it, but I could take 450 shots, and have the battery still around 40%.
    20:41 Video specs
    21:35 Video AF
    22:58 Image stabilisation in video

    Apparently, I made TWO big mistakes in the video, both of which were noticed by commenters - to whom I'm very grateful for this:
    1. The Z5 does NOT have a BSI sensor... It has a CMOS design instead. (Noticed and corrected by Taipei Geek)
    2. About the "bug" concerning picture profile changes in video / photo mode.
    As Abhishek Maurya
    kindly pointed out, there's a setting for this I wasn't aware of at the time of editing the video...
    In video mode you can select any picture profile independently of the photo mode, OR you can tell the camera to use the same profile as in photo mode.
    Movie Shooting Menu → Set Picture Control → Same as photo settings.
    Here's a screenshot of that:
    photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-SjRMBVS/0/aa6c1200/XL/i-SjRMBVS-XL.jpg
    This was very possibly activated when I reviewed the Z5.

      BSI means Back Side Illuminated. The sensor in the Z6 I/II is also CMOS but it's BSI-CMOS. It will provide better low light performance.

    • @Noksus
      @Noksus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Leah-ju8ht You're wrong. The sensor is not the "exact same" as in the D750 merely by the fact that the Z6 (and II) sensor has the focusing sensors built-in in the sensor itself. The D750 even has a slightly lower resolution (24.3Mpix vs 24.5Mpix) and it uses a separate focusing system which is used because of the mirror. Z6 I and II sensors do have BSI, you can check the actual specs yourself here: www.dxomark.com/nikon-z6-ii-sensor-review-familiar-sensor-performance/
      A BSI sensor is more expensive to manufacture, therefore it makes sense to leave it out of a cheaper camera. There are better examples of contrived product segmenting than this. And really, even if the sensors had the same performance, the Z6 is MUCH smaller than the D750. And also way more silent.

    • @Noksus
      @Noksus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Leah-ju8ht And here on Nikon's own product page it says BSI sensor: www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/mirrorless-cameras/z-6ii.html

    This is the best review on the Nikon Z5. I owned the z6 for 18 months and loved it. So when They came out with the Nikon Z50 I purchased it also. I was a little disappointed in the noise that it produced in the images over ISO 400. I mostly shoot portrait photography with a little bit of landscapes here and there. So I had to Z50 as a back up in case my Z6 had issues when I was working with a client. But when I heard about the Nikon Z5 and it had the second card slot I had to give it a chance. Comparing it to my Z6 in image quality you could not tell the difference. I tested both cameras all the way up to ISO 6400 with identical results. I have both the 50 mm and 85 mm F1.8 S lenses and they worked flawlessly on both cameras. But what I’ve learned with the Z5 using the FTZ adapter that adaptive lenses work a little faster finding the eyes using eye af on the z5. I think my z5 finds focus faster than my z6 with the newest firmware update in it and tracks faster. Not but much but it’s noticeable.
    I love adapting f mount lenses to the z cameras and couldn’t be more happier with their performance. Yes they are a little slower than the native lenses but for what I’ve used them for they performed excellent. I’ve used them for for portraits and weddings. But I also tried them at football games, cheerleading tournaments, and ATV races with a great hit rate. My Nikon Z5 has now become my main body and my Z6 as a back up. Yes the Z5 is that good! It is so underrated in the camera community that it’s sad to see that it’s going unnoticed by so many. But great review love how thorough you were. What I’ve learned with a remote auto focus is it a hit and miss with certain dogs and cats on both my Z6 and my Z5. Sometimes it does not find the eyes on my black cat but it does on the black and white cat. I don’t do video so I don’t care how they dumbed down the video specs on the z5. I just did a wedding this past weekend and I got 1230 images off of one battery and that is with image review on. In my eyes that’s pretty darn good. But trying to get a new spare battery is very hard to find

      Thank you so much for sharing your first-hand experiences, I hope many people will find it useful!
      Also, so many people asked me about the adapted lenses, and I can't say anything, because I had no experience with them. But glad to hear they work for you!
      I really agree with you that Nikon Z cameras are underrated - they shouldn't be!

    • @LMActionsports

      @@miklosmayerphoto to me the Z5 is the Z6 without the video features and the FPS. If you're looking to do portrait photography or landscapes or street photography I would buy this before the Z6. But if you want the Z6 because it's the cheaper price or the same as the Z5 and you want video features get the Z6 but don't let nobody fool you about the Z5 it's a little beast of a camera. And yes adapted lenses were perfect on it I own Sigma, Tamron, and Nikon f Mount lenses that all work great on it. I actually own more f Mount lenses than native lenses. And I continue to buy f Mount lenses for the Z6 and Z5.

    • @miklosmayerphoto
      @miklosmayerphoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, if I was to buy a great photography camera, I would go for the Z5 at this moment! It is currently hands down the best FF camera in that price range. Nikon should have better marketing to make people realize that :)
      Thanks again for sharing your experience with adapted glass.

      From the reviews I have seen (specifically regarding high ISO) I have found the Z6 and Z7 have banding issues due to phase detection, I suspect the z5 does not have this issue do to the fewer number of detection cells. The new z6II and z7II use two processors and do not suffer from banding. My suspicion is the second processor corrects the issues.

    • @miklosmayerphoto
      @miklosmayerphoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@maze400 Well, they seemed to have solved the problem, because there's absolutely zero banding as far as I noticed on ISO 100, even at +5 stops, which is quite extreme. My Canon 6D gets unusuable at +3 stops...

    • @miklosmayerphoto
      @miklosmayerphoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much! Well, it's pretty basic Lightroom workflow.
      Because those photos were taken in bright sunlight, I could use low ISO, which meant I could have a bit more sharpening as usual. Not to mention that the Nikkor Z 85 mm lens is crazy sharp :)
      Also, when I put the photos into the video, they have to be resized to match the 1920 x 1080 px of the video. And here's a small trick: I apply one more step of sharpening right in the video editing software.
      It's because sharpening always have to be applied after any resizing.
      So maybe that's why the photos seem sharp and vibrant - which of course I take as a compliment :)
      By the way, I have a video about sharpening in Lightroom Classic, maybe you'll find it useful:

      @@miklosmayerphoto I got one question though. The Z50 is a much better value price/quality wise and the 2 kit lenses seem much better than the kitlens that comes with the Z5? If you had to choose between with the Z50 with the 2 kit lenses or the Z5 with 1 kit lens, which one would you buy and why? (I really can't choose money wise!)
      Edit: and does it really matter it isn't back-lit? Also I heard there is a crop when making time-lapses, how can I make time-lapses without the crop?
      Thanks in advance! :)

      @@luukvuden That's easy in my case: as I travel a lot, for me weight is important. Plus I love 70-200 or similar tele lenses.
      So for me the Z50 with two kit lens is ideal - I have been using this kit for a year now, and love it!

    Finally got the Z5 with that tiny little kit lens. My first ever foray into full frames, jumping from that entry level APS-C Canon I've been using for years.....so far I have been astonished with the quality of the photos, especially so as this is the quality from a kit lens, not even from an 'S' lens. With IBIS and weather proofing and practically the same magnesium build and button layout without skimping on any single button from the Z6/7, this camera is a bargain!
    Loved your review thoroughly! Subbed! Cheers from India!

    Great video.
    I came to this video before buying Z5 and now after using it for 6 weeks.
    I must say that I perfectly knew what features this camera will lack, and they appeared to me painful, e.g. 4k crop, 4.5fps , no top display, but after several weeks of using it, I realized I do not notice these limitations, since I do not do sports or wildlife, and I found that wide angle lens will surely soften 4k crop thing. The top LCD could be fine option, but even very expensive Sony cameras do not have it. I can guess Nikon will not make a Z5ii any time soon, cause even lacking some key features, Z5 does nearly same level stills photography as Z6ii. And not to mention that I bought 2 very great 128gb Lexar UHSii cards for just 70 USD. Now take a look how expensive is same capacity CF card. IBIS is a thing which makes this camera even better. Focus stacking is one of my favorite , especially for landscapes.
    Overall I consider Z5 one of the best value cameras ever , if not the best.
