  • Buckingham Palace has declined a request to return the remains of an Ethiopian prince who came to be buried at Windsor Castle in the 19th Century.
Prince Alemayehu was taken to the UK aged just seven and arrived an orphan after his mother died on the journey.
Queen Victoria then took an interest in him and arranged for his education - and ultimately his burial when he died aged just 18.
But his family wants his remains to be sent back to Ethiopia.

@@cmoore7518 YThere are accounts that suggest Alemayehu wanted to return to Ethiopia. According to some reports, he wrote letters to his family and Ethiopian officials expressing his desire to go back to his homeland. These letters expressed his sadness and longing for his mother, his wish to see his homeland again, and his hope for a better future for Ethiopia. From an ethical perspective, the return of cultural artifacts and human remains to their country of origin is often seen as a way to respect the rights and wishes of the affected community. Many argue that such repatriation efforts help rectify historical injustices and promote cultural heritage preservation.

I think it is unfortunate that Buckingham Palace has refused to return the remains of Prince Alemayehu to Ethiopia. He was taken from his homeland as a child and died alone in a foreign country. His family and his people have the right to honour his memory in his ancestral land. The British should respect their wishes and show some remorse for their colonial past.

I personally think the reason Buckingham Palace refused is, conceding to such a request, and agreeing to return a possession as culturally significant as a Prince's remains is going to open the way for past colonies to start asking for stuffs that Imperialist Britain stole, especially those of cultural significance... An example of this is the Benin Kingdom's attempts of trying to get back most of the cultural artifacts the British stole during the 1897 British massacre of the Benin Kingdom.

Oh, Buckingham Palace, regal and grand,
I beseech you to hear my fervent demand.
For in your halls, a story untold,
Of a stolen prince, brave and bold.
    Prince Alemayehu, his fate unkind,
Taken from his land, leaving loved ones behind.
A captive he became, far from his home,
His spirit shattered, his heart alone.
In Ethiopia's land, his absence keenly felt,
His people yearning, their anguish never dealt.
Generations have passed, the pain remains,
While his remains lie within your domains.
Buckingham Palace, with grace and might,
It's time to set things right, to make it right.
Return the prince, let him rest at last,
His final journey, his memories held fast.
In the name of justice, let empathy guide,
    Embrace compassion, let history reside.
Acknowledge the past, heal wounds untold,
    Buckingham Palace, let truth unfold.
For Prince Alemayehu, let justice prevail,
A solemn gesture that will never fail.
To honor his spirit, to mend what's been torn,
Return his remains, let redemption be born.

The British Empire raped many countries of their precious items. At least in the US we have returned Ramses 1 back to Egypt, along with other artifacts. Canada had Rameses, which they were unaware for, and then ended up in Georgia, USA. Zahi Hawass made a trip to the US to examine the mummy and it was that of a King. It was repatriated back into Egypt with fan fare, and DNA testing proved he was Ramses 1. In my state a lot of things have been returned to the Native Americans. I get not wanting to return certain historic items in wore torn parts of the world where they were stolen from because of extreme religious ideology, that might destroy them, but the Royal Family have stolen a lot of precious gems. My step family who are Burmese said they practically took everything of value even out of religious statues.

The statement that England's time of terror around the world must end now is also subjective and could be considered biased. The statement is based on the assumption that England has been a source of terror around the world, but this is not necessarily the case. England has a long and complex history, and it has both positive and negative aspects. Yep! Britain need to empty the Royal collections, zoos, museums..... & return all that they stolen, whilst they are at it they need to return the power of gold, colbalt, diamond and oil mines back to countries they enslaved and colonise.

They like quoting " the international community," where is the international community now to condemn the Brits for holding back the remains of a dead love one. Oh, I forget it is the slave master mentality. It is time for countries to boycott Common Wealth Games, in protest against this disgraceful act. My father's opinion.

They can't, give back his remains because that will mean returning back true royalty. They know what they are doing. Spiritually, it will have serious consequences returning back the remains of the original true ancient royals. They can't, risk that. If he wasn't from the lineage of the original ancient royals they wouldn't hold on to his remains. They probably, sacrificed him and drank his royal blood!

they should return it imo. Regardless of whether they will 'disturb the resting place of a substantial number of others'. Because leet's be honest, why did you bury him there in the first place? Of course, your past ancestors knew that after they were gone, he will still not be returned to ethiopia. They were just making sure that he will be kept there even after their deaths. It's their crime in the first place. Just like how no one wants to die captive in a foreign land, please return the body back to where they were born from. This isn't it chief.

The English royal family has a lot of acountability to do - restitution and reparations across the Commonwealth. Cant dig up remains bcoz u dont want to disturb others. What about others in museums and universities (e.g. broken hill man from Zambia)? Or were the gems on the crowns dug up in NewCastle?
