      We got a Purebred Boston terrier from a well known breeder named Radar. He was papered, health tested, and had a champion family history dating back 7 generations with no hint of inbreeding. Radar was one of the best tempered dogs I've ever known. Radar had dietary issues throughout his life but we did our best to provide a healthy diet. When he was 6 years old he was diagnosed with canine Cushings, Hypothyroidism, dry eye syndrome, and eventually his trachea collapsed about a month ago. We made the hard choice and we had to put him to sleep due to that. All of those diseases/issues happen to be fairly common with BT's. I know a few people with other papered Boston Terriers and each has health complications. I'll miss the hell out that little guy, he was a best friend for life. I think we are going to rescue our next dog, and it'll likely be a mixed breed. I think you take a risk with all dogs, but the purebreds are at a genetic disadvantage right from the start.

    Sophie is absolutely gorgeous 💖 💖 💖 💖 she actually reminds me a lot of Valentine and she's a Gsd! It's totally about the individual dog, though I did have a thought today. I wonder if reactive dogs are sharper, not smarter, than non reactive ones. Out of the dogs we've had, the ones that have been reactive seemed to be that bit more precise in their training especially when learning tricks. Would love to hear what you think Zak, you've worked with a lot of dogs! 😂 😂 😂

    • @crosita1
      @crosita1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kirsty Macfarlane I believe in an anecdotal way that reactive dogs, because they have so few friends, value the friends they do have more than a more normal dog. I think they work harder at training for humans they are close with. Not so much with strangers though. They also tend to be hyper-alert when under threshold, which could make them more observant and that could lead to more precision. However that's balanced by having to worry that every noise or movement is most likely scary monster so distractions can be harder to work through. I can see where you are coming from. Could be a good master's thesis!

    • @kirstymacfarlane1620
      @kirstymacfarlane1620 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your reply, but because a dog's reactive doesn't mean it's not normal.

    • @crosita1
      @crosita1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is an interesting perspective. Usually when dog behavior people talk about dogs who are reactive, they are talking about dogs who react to social stimuli in an unhealthy way--dogs who react to a friendly and nonthreatening dog as a threat, or dogs who react to a person who is not a threat as if they are one, feeling fear and stress in a way that is harmful to the animal's health and well-being. As a trainer, I see that there is a continuum of reactivity levels and all dogs will react of provoked enough. However, I would never call a normal dog reactive, because in my experience, reactivity is used to denote a behavior problem that needs significant help for the dog to live a happy, healthy, normal dog life. Same with separation anxiety. Dogs with separation anxiety have a pathological level of anxiety when left alone. Normal dogs will have a milder, "normal" level of anxiety from being isolated from family members because dogs are not meant to be left by themselves for extended periods, which is healthy but can also be further alleviated with training.
      There are certainly many reactive dogs out there, and they can be beloved and wonderful family pets when managed appropriately. However, they need more help socially than a dog with more healthy and appropriate responses in social situations. So I would say they are not normal dogs.

    • @kirstymacfarlane1620
      @kirstymacfarlane1620 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      But don't you think almost all dogs are reactive to something?

    • @crosita1
      @crosita1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like I said, if provoked severely enough, any dog will defend itself. But at a healthy or normal level, that is an adaptive response to a threat. So they aren't reactive, they are just a dog. A dog I would call reactive is responding at a level that is 1) not in proportion with the level of threat they are actually under and 2) having their quality of life and stress hormone levels adversely affected. A dog who barks for less than a minute when the FedEx guy leaves a package is not reactive. A dog that barks for an hour, tries to bite the FedEx guy, can't stop barking if a guest enters until the guest has left and all is quiet, etc., is reactive. They are responding in a pathological, not-normal way.
      I wouldn't say most dogs are reactive to some trigger or another. If you spend a lot of time around shelter dogs, you will run into a lot of behavior problems because that is the most common reason for surrender. And if you are a trainer, you will run into behavior problems because most people don't go to a trainer until the problem is significant. Most dogs have things they may not like or find a little scary, but they recover quickly and can be desensitized and counterconditioned to those things in a few sessions. They give healthy warning signals via vocalizations and body language, and if given the choice will retreat instead of attack. I wouldn't call that reactivity.
      I've seen some force/punishment trainers get really upset about things like growls that I find healthy though. My theory is that these trainers are so much more likely to escalate a situation that a warning of not being comfortable with something often leads to a much more dangerous conflict between dog and trainer. Positive trainers tend to de-escalate and I personally appreciate warning signals because it is communication and a way to avoid having to bite. So it might be in what behaviors you would define as reactive versus my definitions?
      I have 1 reactive dog, 1 normal dog, and 1 dog who was super friendly but after many health problems tends to act in a reactive way towards strangers. I don't know if he is truly reactive in a lifelong-needs-management way or not. Once I get his health problems totally squared away, I will be able to get a better picture of whether this is a behavioral symptom or problem. My normal dog will be unfriendly to large bouncy young dogs who approach her, growling and showing teeth because she is small and middle-aged and needs her space respected. If they respond respectfully, she is fine with them. If they don't, she is willing to defend herself. That's a normal non-reactive dog in my view.

      Maxwell
      Purebreds are bred for a purpose, a specific job. Mutts can be for just having a family pet, but if you want a dog that is going to provide specific tasks then your best bet is to get a purebred dog that was bred and trained for that specific task. Want a protection dog? Get a pit bull or Rottweiler. Want a service dog? Get a Vizsla or golden retriever. Need a dog that can identify certain things and alert you to them? Get a German Shepherd or a Labrador. Need one for tracking game or searching for people? Get bloodhound or a beagle. Every breed has its own purpose and task it was designed for and the only way to really be able to make use of those genetics is to have a purebred dog. Mixed breeds can be amazing family pets and can accomplish many tasks, but not as quickly or efficiently as a purebred. It all depends on *why* you're getting a dog.

The rest of my dogs have been mixed breeds to include: A Lab/Golden mix which loved every kid in the neighborhood and hated every adult (except me); an Aussie/Lab mix that was a faithful, loyal, and loving friend; a Rotty/Chow-Chow/Golden/Lab mix that has the body of a Rotty (110 lbs), the coat of a Golden, the stubbornness of Chow-Chow and the lovability of a lab; and my latest little guy (12 weeks old) who is another Aussie/Lab mix. All my dogs had/have their own personalities and quirks and the secret to a great relationship is getting to know and accept each one as an individual spirit.

    Yup, we got a surprise getting our dog. Mother was a collie-terrier, dad was supposed to be lab-pitbull. We thought he would grow to be about 45 lbs like his mother. Well, we quickly got more dog than we expected.
    He ended up 65 lbs, looking like a shepherd terrier. But we love him! and are fully committed to loving, playing and caring for this dog.
    Sad story, most of his littermates have been bounced from home to home and some ended up at the shelter. There was just soo much energy in these big dogs.

    I have 3 mixed breed/rescue dogs. Two from rescues, one from a shelter. The girl from the shelter I unfortunately had to put down in February. She was only six years old. But out of nowhere she developed liver disease that was too far along to be treated. My next dog will be a full breed German shepherd. So I don't have favorites, I love both pure breed and mutts. They both have their pros and cons about them. My rescues are very protective of me, because of their past experiences. Either way I love both! And couldn't imagine not having both!

    the problem is, how can I know what exactly I'm getting when I'm getting a mutt? I'm risking so much.
    I want a dog that's gonna live as long as possible and will be as healthy as possible. BUT I also want my dog to match my lifestyle, and I'm really not about sport. I want my dog not only to be fine with not having a lot of physical activity, but I also want it's body not to require a lot of it. On top of that, I want my dog's temper not to be too strong since I'm not very patient and both me and a strong tempered dog would just make each other's lives unhappy. I would also really love my dog to look nice, to match my tastes more-or-less. So HOW can I ever know what am I getting if I'm getting a mutt?..
    I know that the people keeping them in the shelter can maybe provide some info, but the dog might not have been there for long enough, and in the end, they might not have enough info. Roughly saying, it's like entering a lottery while what's at stake is the happiness of yourself, your future dog and everyone you live with for quite a bunch of years. :[

    • @pengmaeda9908
      @pengmaeda9908 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Asherthedragongirl But Purebreds are inbred. Being inbred leads to more chances of genetic problems. More genetic problems could lead to an early grave. For example our purebred Maltese died due to a Heart Disease, a genetic problem that could very well have been due to inbreeding. If you want a dog that has the best chance of living longer, go for a mixed dog, dont support purebred breeders, that just produces more inbreeding and over the years, the dogs produced from that continuous inbreeding will produce less and less healthy dogs.

    • @pengmaeda9908
      @pengmaeda9908 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Asherthedragongirl I mean. Cool, I guess? Hopefully they dont have any genetic diseases. But I hope you just understand what I'm saying here. Do you want to live in a world where dogs are on average living shorter and shorter lives with every generation? Shouldn't you want that to stop? Shouldn't you want to encourage the breeders to stop inbreeding and completely dismantle this whole made up concept of "dog breeds" we created, to start breeding those "purebreds" with another "breed" so the next generation of pups dont get genes that are fucked beyond belief? I'd rather dogs lived longer and happier lives thank you very much.

    • @tision
      @tision 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @squeezer Or you spend money to find out if your dog has an inheritable trait that makes him prone to something that is however preventable, saving you potentially thousands on expensive treatment for your loved doggo. There are way more benefits than just that as well.

    I love how on the DNA breakdown, the last says 17.7% supermutt :D That must be the official mutt breed, since dogs are so easy to manipulate into new things, they create their own breed every time that's unique per dog. It's kinda fascinating really. It's my understanding only dog DNA has that characteristic, where X+Z makes Y, like the designer breeds that are always coming out.

I'm trying to regain my normal lifestyle built around my disability, so I need to stack the deck in my favor as much as possible: large breed, strong & athletic, extremely high heat tolerance (south Florida), very versatile, long lifespan, highly trainable, dedicated, able to be intelligently disobedient, high energy & low anxiety, and more. I can't afford to get it wrong. And that's all I'm saying, except Rhodesian Ridgeback. :)

      Glen Hunt It seems you are looking for a lab or similar.

      Nope. A lab cannot run for 1.5 hours or more in south Florida's summer sun. Very few breeds can. As my service dog, he needs to be able to hang with my lifestyle; regaining my independence is part of the reason I need a service dog. Also, because labs are so cute and cuddly, too many children and adults would come hug and pet and distract him from doing his job, which includes medic alert. Guess what could happen if my service dog misses a medical emergency cue? A Rhodesian Ridgeback does not look quite as cute and cuddly, so he would (usually) be allowed to do his job without getting mobbed.

    We did embark and found out our mixed breed rescue pups are clear of all the health markers! We agree the ones in need are the best breed! Adopt!
