- Gail Miller Bisher, best known as the voice of the Westminster Kennel Club, sits down with WIRED to talk about every single dog breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. Gail goes over the seven major groups of dogs (hound, toy, sporting, non-sporting, herding, working, and terrier) and what makes each and every dog breed so special and unique. Ever wondered why Welsh Corgi's are so short or what the difference is between an Australian Shepherd and a Miniature American Shepherd is? Gail Miller Bisher has all of us covered.

Those breeds are glorified animal cruelty. I don't understand how can people find them cute at all. You can hear and see them struggle breathing.
I doubt that they would say the same for a deformed human.
@@GriseBlacolar Well, people aren't pets, for one.
That said, breeding for deformities is just stupid. Pugs and frenchies shouldn't exist, at least not as they are.

Had a full blood Chow Chow while growing up. Her name was Simba (named before my mom found out it was a female) and she was an absolute lady.
Very protective of me and my brothers and the animals on our property but also extremely well mannered.
She would super gently take a treat given to her and then lay with her front paws crossed, place the treat on top, and take her time to enjoy it.
Her: "Shiba Inus have a quite demeanor"
My Shiba: Screams whenever a rubber band falls of my desk.
Teo Nys Quiet when not prompted to make noise.
Was thinking the same! My shiba sounds like a coyote when he sees or hears something.
edit: I also wish they'd spent more than 20 seconds on the shiba.
My Shiba lived 16 years and rarely screamed. He would only make noise when doing his "Shiba 1000" energy spurt, or occasionally when he heard another dog outside. Figures the Shiba would be the last dog on the video, they rarely get any time on the dog show broadcasts either. I'm currently looking for my next Shiba pup...it's time.
Carson D honestly you are useless
Carson D they are useless if you let them be useless. I own a Shiba, and she isn’t useless at all. No dog is, regardless of the breed. If you think that, you shouldn’t have a dog at all.

1 thing about beagles is that they are very intelligent but are single minded and determined, so when you are training them, you are gonna need alot of effort and determination and like other scent hounds, it's going to be difficult to recall them when they pick up a scent.
I have a beagle he is adorable and this is true
On walks he always is smelling the ground and if a smell catches his attention he’ll get really excited and try to go to it

This was a good video but AKC NEEDS to address health issues within breeding, for example overexaggerated wrinkles or overly smushed noses/faces. Also the sloping back in GSDs, compare the backs on the working German Shepherds to the show German Shepherds, they look like bananas!! Please update the breed standard for these poor dogs who are being valued for deformed aesthetics rather than their health!
The akc does not decide the standards, that's the breed club.
Also they need to stop requiring certain breeds to be altered in appearance to compete. Such as dobermans who can’t compete unless their ears and tails are cropped.... I think cropping is wrong so it’s bs that they require it
@@raquel5389 I absolutely agree a dog should be allowed to be shown in it's natural state. It gets complicated when people start chanting things because everyone freaks that it will have an unstoppable domino effect. I've definitely heard oh they'll allow natural dogs, then crop and docking will be banned, then training tools will be banned and then what's next. Change scares people.
Can everybody just chill, it's literally just a video to show you all the different dog breeds
TNT Dogs are being disfigured purely for aesthetics resulting in lifelong pain problems, multiple corrective surgeries, and significantly shortened lifespans due to standards enforced in part by organisations like AKC. “CaN eVEryBOdY jUST cHiLL” headass
"cute little snorting sound when they breathe" yeh it's because they struggle to breathe because of human over breeding. Don't mention that though will you. Dog expert here just says it's cute.
"quiet in demeanor" maybe sometimes, but everyone who owns shibas will tell you they won't hesitate to yell their little lungs out
I had a border collie, he hated when we were all in different rooms, he would walk room to room checking everyone and would not lay down until we were all in the same room....and if you rain he would try to herd you. he was a house pet never trained to herd, it came naturally.
Nicole My border collie did that too. she always felt nervous when someone out of her pack wasn’t in sight
aww border collies are such good dogs! I miss him he died 2 years ago, he was 17. he acted like that untill the last even if it was hard for him to move around:(

I think its pure instinct. The long coated collie we had at a hostel we visited in Uruguay would try to herd us on the beach 😂😍
We had similar with our collie. I would always laugh when he would hide in the grass very seriously ready to herd.

hahaha yeah I have one too they are so funny
There are many breeds, but take the German Sheperd show line as an example.
The amount of health problems they suffer because of the breeding imposed is not something to celebrate.
All of this is about ego, not about the dogs.
German Shepherds are actually really healthy. The healthiest dog is actually the Long coated Chihuahua, especially the deer headed that's a bit bigger. Bigger dogs can have arthritis at older ages, but German Shepherds are still really healthy compared to others
@@enriktigasna I am not very educated about the many deformities that are bred in dogs, but I know a few things. I do remember reading about the problems in show breed german shepherds, and there was a list of things that caused physical issues but were required by kennel clubs. One of which was a sloped back, I think. I can't remember the others off the top of the head.
@@MultiKswift no they don't actually have a liked back. That is a rumor that even I believed in but it's not true. The back is straight, however the loins and coup are curved, the withers are elevated, the bones are angulated and the dog is stacked to make the back "appear" to be sloping, but it's actually not. You can check the 2017 westminster best in show winner's (who was a German shepherd) hip tests on OFA, and the come back as excellent.
@@enriktigasna That's true for working line dogs, but the show line takes their naturally slightly sloped back and takes it to such an extreme that is causes the dog to have hip problems.
false, that is just the way the dogs move and are stacked. They are in a 3 point stack, making their backs look overly slanted and their hips low, but if you actually see these dogs at a standstill they look perfectly normal. You could stack a Golden Retriever or an Aussie in a 3 point stack and they'll look the same way. I did it with my Rottweiler, Doberman, and Husky to prove this very point. (also obviously there is definitely bad breeding that does go into these dogs, as every breed has, somewhere, but the GSD's in the AKC ring are not as bad off as you may think)
”They snort and sneeze, there’s something really cute about them” it’s not cute they can’t breathe properly :(
French bulldogs "snort and sneeze and they're very cute". Yeah I wonder why they snort, only way they can get air in
@@JobeF I mean, no we shouldn't breed any dogs that have health problems. My point is valid, because brachycephalic breeds tend to have more significant health issues than other breeds and tend to be bred to make these issues worse rather than better.
the difference is that the entire breed is bred to be unhealthy
most bulldogs have genetic problems, however most humans don't have genetic problems
@@JobeF I think the point is, the human defects you described can'tbe controlled. Some humans are just born with a weak heart. Dogs, on the other hand, were intentionally bred with defects because these defects look cute to a human. For example, some pugs were bred specifically to have very flat noses. That isn't good. It hampers their breathing. That's why they snort. It's not a quirky, cute characteristic they have. It's a defect. Some dogs aren't even allowed in airplanes because it can kill them due to air pressure (Philippine Airlines). And the thing is, these defects are bred intentionally because it's "cute". Breeders don't care that the dog had a hard time breathing and their lifetime could be shortened. No, as long as they're cute and easily sold, they'll breed them that way. When breeding dogs, it's important to think of their health over their appearance first. It would be MUCH better if pugs weren't bred to have defective noses anymore. No one is saying a pug is less or should be treated less because of it's flat nose. But for the betterment of all future dogs it is better to breed them to better health.
Jobe Frasier You aren’t making sense bro. We aren’t saying we don’t accept these dogs or they’re bad. We’re saying it’s bad and not good that they’ve been bred to be deformed. Nobody’s mad at the dogs for having a defect that they can’t control, but people bred them to have the defects so that’s why it’s not cool
Jobe Frasier your points are so dumb and senseless. What are you 12
Fun Fact: Every beagle(and other hounds, I'm sure) is bred to have a white-tipped tail, so the hunters can keep track of them as they're running in the forest. Really cute!
And it's called their "flag" :)
My mom has a basset hound and when he is in the fields when the grass is high, we do indeed find him by looking for his white tail-tip! It's a funny sort of "location-device"! ;-)
I would never have guessed Corgis are for herding
I have a cardigan corgi and she acts 100% like a herding dog, she just comes in a smaller package. ^^;
Our Corgi (a rescue - probably had Sheltie & Spaniel mixed in, per the vet) “loved” to herd the neighborhood kids. He was a very loving dog who sometimes didn’t realize that his gentle nudge would topple a toddler. (Yes, 100% our responsibility to keep him in line.) Such an wonderful, sweet dog who is very missed. ❤️
It definitely doesn’t surprise me because every time I’d visit my friend’s house, their corgi would immediately start biting at my ankles and hands and wouldn’t leave me alone until I was in the house. Lol
The video I never knew I needed but now must watch all the way through.
"Shiba Inus are quiet"
Me, a vet tech: 🤨
I guess they're quite when they aren't making loud bizarre noises. /shrug
They are usually pretty quiet... except when you, a stranger tries to touch them... then they have this weird crazy yell/scream as if we're trying to murder them.
@@rei_cirith It's probably a bit awkward for people working in a vet office when it sounds as if they're killing one of their patients. There are probably still a few people who haven't heard them making that noise on youtube videos.

I love that ive seen my dog mentioned. I have a swedish vallhund. They are originally viking dogs and were used by the vikings to herd cows. Theyre similar size to a corgi and can be born either with or without a tail. Theyre a strong sterdy breed which can be quite vocal. Theyre brilliant family dogs, but can try to herd their owners and children. My girl when out on a walk will sit and lay down if my daughter is to far behind. She refuses to leave any one of us behind and wants us to all walk together 😂 honestly my favourite breed ive ever owned ❤️ xx
l also have a Vallhund! I wish they would have devoted a few more sentences to the Scandinavian herders in this video. Such great dogs with a long and interesting history. Love my boy
I'm so glad you mentioned the Portuguese Podengo! I unknowingly adopted one and she's the sweetest dog ever, and although we don't put her hunting capabilities to use, she does still show those hunter's instincts a lot. Iirc they were developed to hunt in the underbrush, hence the shorter legs, I can't recommend their breed enough
After 101 Dalmations everyone wanted a dalmation and it was overbred by puppy mills, backyard breeders that caused genetic issues. Very sad. Many of them ended up in shelters as people did not know it required a high amount of training and exercise.
Same thing happened with clownfish and blue tangs after Finding Nemo. People need to grow up and research what they're getting into instead of chasing fads with living creatures.
Jules Gulizia similar thing happened when the movie Beethoven came out in 1992 where the main vilain is the vet. People where scared to go to the vet and didn’t trust them for a long time! Kids where crying in vet clinics and it affected their credibility for a loooong time because of that film! If someone loves a dog breed they shouldn’t put in it in popular culture because it’ll lead to more problems in the breed that’s why the dog Snoopy is actually a Beagle but M. Schulz didn’t want to hurt the breed so he didn’t put the topical « beagle colours »
Undomaranel arent puppy mills and backyard breeders really bad tho
And now the doodle craze is threatening the integrity of the poodle gene pool and they're getting diseases and allergies they shouldn't be predisposed to.

yes! I'm so happy she talked about how wonderful and sweet my shelties are! they are really very sweet and cute dogs!
A bit disappointed but not surprised that these dogs health problems due to breeding standards wasn’t mentioned.
Nope, this one was all fluff.
I winced a bit when she described the Frenchies' "snuffling and grunting" (which is caused by, essentially, the internal anatomy of their nose&mouth not actually fitting very well into what passes for their head) as a particularly cute trait.
My father used to have a Boston Terrier who'd literally throw up a little every time he got really excited. Same kind of issue.
And all the Bulldogs are SUCH GREAT DOGS! Personality-wise! It would take maybe three generations to outcross them to some similarly sized breed to get just a SLIGHTLY more moderate head shape. Cross a bunch of those mixes back into the breed, select for (at the very least!) ability to breathe and give birth w/o caesarians, and you'd end up with the exact same dog - just 75% or so healthier. It could be SO EASY.
(This experiment was tried with boxers. Worked a treat! Never could get the descendants - who looked and acted like boxers in every way, just with normal dentition and a moderate muzzle shape - registered by the official clubs, of course. Madness!)
Yeah and of course she didn't take in the fact that everyone single dog has an individual personality
@Epic Terry alot of the more recent toy breeds and sone others can't give birth or sometimes even mate naturally.
@@jkg251 I understand your concern but that is something that should logical to many people considering what dog to get and is talked about. Although the breed standart characters are generally how a dog is like of course they are all different, I totally agree. The harmful breeding is more of a problem the kennel and many breeders just don't opely talk about, so many people buying a dog are not aware of their new pets health issues and risks which is really concerning and dangerous.
@Epic Terry Oh yes, bulldogs are not something that at this point I would call a dog. Dont get me wrong, I love their personalities but I cannot understand how someone can look at a dog that a)almost never can breed naturally b) needs to always have a c-section and c) cant swim because they sink like a rock and then decide that, yes, this is a normal healthy dog. Makes me sad :(

Yeah they did that a few times lol
I can tell you about Xoloitzcuintle. They were the Mexicas (Aztecs) breed. It was important in their religion because your Xolo was in charge of taking you to the Mictlan (the Mexicas heaven). They usually have no hair, but there's some Xolos that have a bit of it in their heads, unfortunately in the past xolos with hair were sacrifice. But not anymore. There's three sizes, standard, miniature and toy.

“Really cute mushed face” yeah so cute not being able to breathe properly
I think bulldogs are so cute but what isnt cute is the fact that they cant breath normally, cant give birth without c section, and are in constant pain. Sad how people's vanity is causing them so much pain
I actually keep a picture of a bulldog's skull in my phone when people say how cute their smooshie faces are. This. Is. Not. Cute. This is horribly deformed. This breed needs to be dissolved.
The length of their muzzle isn’t actually what affects their breathing.
Their nares (nose holes) and pallet shape decides that.
I also kinda dislike bulldogs but it's more than the skull. Boxers have that skull and are very healthy dogs, with like 5 years more in average lifespan than "normal" looking dogs like for example Berneses
FallingSpark225 Maybe not dissolved, but brought back to the old standard. They used to be bigger and have better head shape a century ago.
I have an Australian Shepherd. She gets me. She's about a foot tall as she is only 8 weeks. I'm scared bc she's a standard. When she's full grown I will probably be constantly herded into a corner. Meet you there in two years ;-;
Any update
Yup 1 year in she's great! I don't expect any issues in the future. Most of this was probably due to just training and stuff but other than that I think we got lucky with her temperament
my baby is a beagle.... its true, they are loved. whenever we go to the park we always get stopped at least once by someone gasping "awww is that a beagle?!". shes perfect, i couldnt live without her
People breeding these dog breed back them where a lot more considerate towards the dog. They actually took into account the fur and how it would affect the dog in certain temperatures or terrain. Now you see double-coated dogs like the Siberian Huskys in Greece or Spain and short-haired dogs like Chihuahuas in Canada or Russia.
We have the ability to cool hot houses and warm cold ones now.
But they can't make sure to make a dog who can function like a dog and not breed family

The norwegian Elkhound is called Elkhound because a Moose in norwegian is Elg witch many people has confused with another moose, deer like creature called Elk.
ahh good to know! i was always confused why in english, a moose is called moose and not elk, because in german (my native language), mooses are called Elch, which is guess is similar to the norwegian elg! languages are weird.

Alice Palice she got the Belgian shepherds wrong too!
Yeah the mistranslation has always bothered me, but Norwegian Elkhound is the official english name
Alice Palice but that’s because that elk in English means a deer, specifically a wapiti, so it is correct what she is saying but I understand the misunderstanding
I confirm, Duolingo told me elg means moose
also i cringed at the finnish lapphund... neither lapp or hund are words in finnish. the finnish name of the breed is suomenlapinkoira so either call it that or translate the name to english lmao.
I like how she barely said anything about the Besenji. In Kenya we basically know them as "Ushago dogs" Dogs you see when you go to visit your grandma in the village. They are very timid but are said to be an all rounder dog.

well....to be fair, they are quiet when not messed around with. :P
She means quiet *when not prompted to make noise.*
19:30 why nobody mentiones that they cant breath or run very well? In some countries they are called agony bred and forbidden. They may look cute but mostly suffer and need to see the doc to get some nose parts removed in order to be able breathing well again..
Because te AKC never speaks up against how dog breeding can be harmful. A lot of these cute dogs are in a lot of pain
TIL
Ours actually ran very well and could breathe fairly normal compared to other French bulldogs. She sadly passed away recently due to a weak heart which was recognised way too late and an inflammation most likely caused by a poorly done castration.
@@fandm_fun504 they don't speak up about it because they're the ones that make breed standards! They literally say the shorter the snout the better. Smh. If breed standards changed I think they could really help the overall health of those dogs

True lol
This was a good video but AKC NEEDS to address health issues within breeding, for example overexaggerated wrinkles or overly smushed noses/faces. Also the sloping back in GSDs, compare the backs on the working German Shepherds to the show German Shepherds, they look like bananas!! Please update the breed standard for these poor dogs who are being valued for deformed aesthetics rather than their health!

The Norwegian Elkhound is not a misnomer, Norwegians call Moose “elg” which means Moose. Moose are also called “European Elk.” So the name isn’t really a misnomer... it’s just Americans who have another word for a separate species known as “elk.” Elk are known as red deer to Norwegians and called “hjort.”
@Sam Farnsworth Technically he is correct as well.
This threw me! I didn't realise Americans used the word 'elk' like that. I couldn't understand why she said it was a misnomer! Haha
I have been summoned! Thanks for the information

No
You can't breed a Dog for health purposes.
For those who disagree in here, the comment means to stop purposefully breeding dogs to emphasize health defects just because it looks "cute".
@@Kris_797 Yes you can. Health test your dog and only breed those that have passed all their testing.
@@Kris_797 you can. by widening their genetic diversity you can make them healthier and stronger. selectively breeding them with only ones that look like it is bound to make them unhealthy
i waited 18 minutes and 11 seconds to hear about norwegian elkhounds. i’ve had 3 so far and they are such a lovely breed!!
Also I'm so glad she used the proper name for the MAS, there is no such thing as a "Mini Aussie" the breed has always been called a Miniature American Shepherd, and "Toy Aussies" are also not a breed, or a size variant of either of the other two breeds.
Someday I’ll get another. Until then, I’m waiting for part two. I didn’t see golden retriever mentioned. Whatever dog you may be considering, it’s important to take to consideration the room you have, the time you have to spend, as well as cost, and if the dog will fit in with your family and lifestyle. A dog is a 14 year commitment. Also, please consider adopting. There are tons of dogs who are never given a chance. It’s cheaper, and you’re giving a life a second chance!
Labs and greyhounds weren't mentioned either.
@@emmagreen6960 I do heard greyhound being mentioned tho 17:21
I missed part of the video cos of an ad so it must have been said then

Labs and Golden Retriever are not AKC recognized as breeds. It's important to remember that the AKC is just a Kennel Club. There are a couple of other clubs in the US that do recognize them, but, not some of the other ones that the AKC does. None of them will recognize my Cur because it was bred by cowboys and ranchers and is frequently crossbread for function so it's difficult to follow a "pure" line.
@@toddjackson3136 That's a lie. AKC recognizes the Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever. They are in the Sporting Group and they are in AKC'a top breed list every year.
"Quiet ." Well tell that to the Shibu who lives next door.

Dog shows are really the only time your dog’s breed matters.
Elijah Culper lol try moving sheep with a pug
Elijah Culper or hunt
Alicia Otto
Things like the size, temperament, and sensory abilities of a dog will still matter. But a sheep doesn’t care if it’s being herded by a border collie, a German shepherd, or a mutt. The only time the specific breed (or even if the dog is an identifiable breed at all) matters is if you plan to show the dog.
Well it is AKC which is show context

Hellow
No you need the purebred in your life
You need a dog like me in ya life.
Imagine calling dogs who can’t breathe cute even though they ended up like that cause of things like the AKC 😍🥰❤️💕✨💫
They didn't end up like that because of the AKC. They are like that because they were bred to be working dogs and needed the short snouts for the purpose they were intended to fulfill. I agree that it sucks that they have breathing issues but the AKC had nothing to do with it. They just recognize the purpose a dog was bred for and acknowledge whether that dog meets the breed standard. I'm not defending them, just clarifying. I think it's insane to breed dogs who can't even reproduce naturally. I love Frenchies and am dying to have one but I understand it isn't natural.
I can’t believe you started out of the gate with the ACD. That’s what I have, a blue heeler. And he’s amazing. ❤️
Can we breed dogs to live longer? Instead of making pug faces so flat they can’t breathe...... These dogs are so pretty😍
Ending "purebred" breeding practices would result in dogs living longer. Every dog breed has a genetic predisposition to some condition or another that shortens their lifespan, because to keep them looking the same they get inbred a ton. If we want dogs to live longer, we gotta learn to love mutts!
@@rosemarmalade2444 and/or we gotta learn to look out for responsible breeders that focus on health instead of appearance only.
@@rosemarmalade2444 just like the working dogs in this video, tons of breeds are only specialized to be good at their specific job. You can't just take any mutt and train it to hers sheep or be a police dog. That's why we have dogs like german shepherds or the belgian malinois

Really the only memorable thing about the dalmatian and xolo is that they appear in a Disney movie? As a xolo owner myself I can so many wonderful things about their personality and their obvious characteristics like the body shape and the lack of hair. They are really good with their owner but very defensive and cautious of other people. They love to cuddle and to take sun bathes. They are also stunning runners, they way they do kind of resembles how whippets run. An absolutely gorgeous breed with a lot of history and culture behind it
Hella Joe I was disappointed in that as well, her fact for the breed wasn’t a fact about the breed itself.
omgg how did u get a xolo?
Yeah i feel like she didnt go into a lot of the breeds so much is they gave her a time limit of how long the video can be
I totally missed the Xolo all together because I skipped to the end of the non-sporting group where they should have been.
The body shape... Their funny body shape has been the bane of my existence. I love him to death and he's my right hand man and best dog I have or ever will have, but he has been SO hard to find clothes and harnesses for. Everything fits him funny.
And my boy was CONSTANTLY mistaken for a Greyhound pup when he was a baby. We still get Pharaoh Hound more often than I ever expected. Doberman sometimes. Pit bull once. "Statue" was my favorite misidentification. He was laying down the first time a guy walked by and sitting the next and the guy did the funniest double take before telling me he thought my boy was a statue. Although I'm not entirely sure why he thought I had a dog statue on a leash out in public...
My dog’s breed: gets mentioned
