I'm an observant (and vegan) Jew in Israel (which means I get to buy the amazing dates almost directly from the growers). one of the laws of keeping Kosher is not to eat insects or parts of them or their eggs or anything... so we actually check almost every thing- dates, apricots, rice, legumes etc.. I can't remember purchasing a dried date package with no insect or residue of it in at least one of the dates.
Hi kiddo. I have just decided to switch over to using prunes in stead of dates. The brand I have decided to use is "Looney Pruney" which, to me, is a much higher quality. I think it blends better, it is organic and is more nutritious, and it is much less expensive. When I teased her, my wonderful, beloved, 106 year old "Auntie Grace" used to tell me "Oh Skipper (my childhood nick name), you are so full of prunes." She pronounced "prunes" the way Roger Rabbit used to say "Pppppppplease". Now it turns out, she was right. I am full of prunes. LOL. So I am now going to try your paste recipe but with prunes. I have only used them so far for smoothies. I understand some people may become unconstipated even if they are not constipated -- if you know what I mean.
I have made prune paste in the past (I call it instant jam ;) However, I prefer date paste for raw desserts or even baking because dates are sweeter than prunes and don't have any tangy undertones. That said, if you're trying to cut down on sugar, increase fiber, add more nutrients to your diet, etc. prunes definitely win.
@@NutritionRefined I agree on all points for normal prunes. But, to me, Looney Pruney organic prunes are a game changer. They are moister, softer, sweeter, as well as being more nutritious and much less expensive in comparison to dates. The thing is they slow dry them at a low temperature and it makes a difference. ONLY if the dates don't blend into a smooth paste without it. In general, if you use fresh Medjool dates, soak them beforehand and then blend them in a high-speed blender that comes with a tamper (or in a heavy-duty food processor); you shouldn't need to add any water during blending.
I have had the date paste for 3 months in the fridge and it was still fine. You could also freeze it. Date paste doesn’t fully freeze, so you can take out as much as you need, even when frozen.
It depends on how exactly you make it and where you store it. If you don't add any water whatsoever (other than soaking the dates), it has a longer shelf-life and lasts for up to a week in a cool dark place. (It might last longer than a week at room temperature, but I have never tried it). If I store homemade date paste for longer than a week, I keep it in the refrigerator. I have kept it in the refrigerator for months and it has never gone bad. You can also freeze it.
Not a dumb question. No, I don't (kind of). The dates soak up some of the water, so when you blend them, there'll naturally be some water left. Also, if I see that the dates are not blending well, I do add some of the soaking water to the blender to help with that.
I’ve been freaking out because people talk about their dates being moldy. I’ve never seen it because I always soak them, depit and use. Never noticed mold?!?!
Did you look for worms in them?🪱 i do. I have seen alot. I rinse them under water, and pat dry them, open then to check for worms and dry them on a periforated baking sheet at room temp.

Do you deseed them first?
They are without seeds. It's easier to buy already deseeded.
If you don't deseed them they will break your blender.
Such a great question! (I should have mentioned it in the video). If you don't buy pitted dates, you will need to remove the pit first.
Always check. I've found seeds in pitted date packages. Occasionally one is missed!

Why soak them? There are not grains, nuts or beans? They have no phytic acid, as they have sprouted into fruits?
It's easier to blend them once they've been soaked.
