Thevarams are devotional hymns sung in praise of Shiva by the 3 Nayanmars: Sambandar, Thirunavukkarasar and Sundarar. Rendered in an ancient musical style that precedes most Indian classical music systems, these songs give us an insight into the wave of bhakti that swept across southern India during the 7th Century. In this album, children of Isha Samskriti have rendered a select few Thevaram, as an offering to today’s world.
The Nayanmars travelled the length and breadth of South India, predominantly in current day Tamil Nadu, and the temples in this region find a place in their songs. The 275 temples mentioned in Thevaram are referred to as “Paadal Petra Thalam,” which literally means “the temples that were sung in the verses”. The singing of Thevaram is still an active process in many Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu.
This is a Thiruthondar thogai (a sacred list) or an ode to the devotees of Shiva, and the Dikshitars at Thillai Nataraja Temple. Sundarar is credited with first having spoken about the Nayanmars in 'Thillai Vaazh Anthanar', based upon which an entire epic - the Periyapuranam - was later written by Sekkizhar about the life of the Nayanmars. In this Thevaram, Sundarar praises all the 63 Nayanmars in his own inimitable style, bowing down to these devotees of Shiva.
Sundarar was an 8th century mystic poet from Thirunavalur, Tamil Nadu, and one of the Nayanmars - the Shiva bhakti poets of Tamil Nadu. Sundarar personally travelled to many Shiva temples in South India and composed almost 1000 poems, which are compiled in the 'Thirumurai' - a compilation of Poems on Shiva.

I have become an admirer of Lord Siva when I studied at Annamalai University. Spent most of my time in Thillai Natarajar temple. Night 9.00pm with Oothhuvar's super voice echoing the praharas I use to follow sannathi wise Aarthis. Divine experience. Lord Nataraja and Govindaraja Perumal in close proximity.Hmm..it was 1960s...
