Hope you all find this helpful! I’ve added chapters so you can jump around to the most relevant bits for you. Thanks again for the kind words on the mix and requests for this video ;)
Hey, just to let you know when demonstrating the kicks, you've actually inverted the polarity and put the kicks out of phase. You can tell because when you flip the polarity in P5, you loose all of the upper bass and it sounds very hollow, though the sub is accentuated a touch
Rabea. I have a problem I need to solve and I need ur assistance. what I now use to record my guitar is my open iPhone mic monitor in GarageBand , a 12A TUBE guitar amp and it all sounds sh**ty I’m still dying trying to get a goood sound will I be dead trying to accomplish this?
Super useful, Bea! By the way, I learned a lot from your DHW Totemist mix breakdown from two years ago (probably watched it over 30 times while producing my own stuff). Now, it's great to watch you gain more confidence in your mixing skills with this new one!
It's cool to see someone with a great sound go through their process, and it's quite comforting to know it's very similar to my own. I have never had any formal recording training, but I love doing all my own work. Each time I think it could be better, but that's a good reason to keep trying. Thanks Bea
I love the death guitar section. funnily enough I was using your plug in yesterday and shifting an octave down for a meshuggah inspired section, but you just showed me tthe in plugin eq I was missing. Thank you so much for all you do
Its great to watch real-life players / mixes - After a stroke I can only really do my stuff alone and in my own speed using virtual instruments ... people tell me that I do an OK job simulating and re-recording all my 30+ year old tracks. I also learn as I go watching video's like this :-)
Im so glad to see that other big players in the industry approach mixing just by ear. I've been self producing my own band after years of telling myself i cant because "i dont know what im doing". Finally i just said screw it and started. Im pretty pleased with the sound of our newest songs, but i guarantee if you open my mix sessions there are things i didnt need to do or easier ways to get the same effect. But i've learned to let go of caring about that. I've learned to mix in my own space and how to get a sound im pleased with and can expand upon, and im having fun doing it.
Yes!! I had a go at covering this + mixing with reference to your version because I love the low end sound you achieved in this mix. It's so good! Looking forward to watching this one
I love these mix breakdowns! Thanks for giving us all an inside look at your approach and techniques. Always some awesome ideas in these to try in my own mixes. 🤘🤘🤘
Thank you Rabea for this song and this breakdown. Although I’m a simple home recording guitarist, this is where I’d love to be with my mixes. Time to study. Cheers.
Love this! So much great stuff you are sharing here. Thank you! I find it interesting with all the available compressors you'd likely have (UAD Complete at the very least I assume) you still chose Smash&Grab and the Logic Compressor for the Bass side-chain compression. It just shows how good most of the plug-ins have become these days and it's just a matter of finding what works for the situation. Love your clean and simple session and approach.
Very informative man, thank you for this. You’re so much better at it than you think, which seems obvious to us and less so to you for some reason. Just so much all around talent impresses the hell out of me time after time. From a fellow drummer/guitarist…
Love this man, thanks for sharing! I found the parts about the small hidden synth bits really insightful. They add a nice subtle energy that gives the song just a bit more movement. Kinda of like a modern shaker/tambourine track. Iv always avoided side chaining the kick and bass because I thought it was more of an EDM production move, really works here though. If it works it works. The synth features on your plugin actually look really inspiring to play with, I’ll have to check it out.
Love your work Rabea! About Soothe 2 you mentioned in the Master Bus: It is kind of AI yes, but also not as far as I know. It is officially a "Resonance Surpressor", meaning it intelligently tries to surpress overshooting frequencies. It can go a lot in detail, but it is similar to an dynamic EQ or MultibandCompressor, but it is more intelligent. It doesn't really have fixed values, besides the one you see in the GUI. Gullfoss is very similar to this, but somehow it does it different hence the different sound. I normally use Gullfoss on the Master and Soothe on singular tracks. But whatever works and sounds good! 👍 Be aware guys, lots of the plugins on the Masterchain actually make it louder (which always sounds better. Especially in case of Rabeas songs, since they are fucking awesome haha)
Use your ears, not eyes. Like you said theres many ways of doing things and I absolutely agree with you on that. The one thing I always suggest to people is high pass, as it’s the most important regarding headroom and cleaning up the mix. The one thing you can’t gain overnight is experience of mixing different instruments and timbres together, once you know how to “glue” the frequencies together it’s only upwards from there! Something I’d recommend with your mix is to use the gain plugin to essentially level your mix first so that the faders have the best resolution. Gain staging is very important too.
One of your best mixes to date my guy! Were you using the neve 1073 bakes intothe guitars? And if so what was the settings? Love you brother looking forward to your future releases!
Nice ! Thanks for that detailed video ! I use Logic too and always struggled with mastering. The new AI mastering they released with the latest update has solved a lot of that for me. But it is probably not open enough to specific controls for you ;)
I have a part in one my songs that I use your synth basically just like this. Put it on a clean guitar, layer that bad boy and it just fills up a room.
Amazing walkthrough mate. Def helped me a lot. 1 quick question though, do the GGD drums have the processing on them (turbo switch etc.) or are they the raw sounds?
Super cool Rabea! I'm pretty sure you heard about Flatline 2 right? That would replace JST clip and Pro-L2 alltogether and it sounds so mean! Saving on audio engine load + Sounds so good, why not! I really love your songs, keep them coming! Rock on!
Great video! Thanks for the insight! I'm curious, did you get this mastered or did you master it yourself? I'd love to know what your final level was when you submitted it to streaming platforms. 😊 Thanks!
Thanks for this, I'm only just getting back to mixing and certainly not a pro. Just a thought on phase (yes its your ears that make the final decision) would it be an idea to bounce the midi for the kicks to separate audio tracks then you can see (I feel the comments about using your eyes already) what the phase alignment is like. A full phase flip may not of been required depending on how the sample was recorded. nudging or delaying the kick may have a better result. I'm only thinking out loud here and I'm sure Dave will have much better advice. Your Kick here sound fine to me :)
Hey Bea, how are those Gene's treating ya mate. I believe those are the 41s right. I have a Neumann 2.1 setup at my Home Studio. Planning to get a pair of 41s with a 7350. But they will leave me broke as hell.
Interesting information, brother. It would be cool if we could also sit in on some of your writing sessions-- once the song has been released and copyrighted, etc, if you're worried about that kind of thing.
Not sure if this has been covered before...but what gear are you using to play-in your drums? What's the e-kit your playing and how are you getting midi into logic?
Yeah haha! When you create a bus, you can check if it’s mono or stereo. Near the top of the strip where you’d see input - should have a mono stereo button.
Hope you all find this helpful!
I’ve added chapters so you can jump around to the most relevant bits for you.
Thanks again for the kind words on the mix and requests for this video ;)
kinda look like jason newsted
my major guitar idol is Rabea massad

These are the best! Thank you! Helps build confidence in recording

You're the best man. So crazy talented, but you also seem so humble and genuine. Love everything you share with us.

I love how chill these videos are. It's nice to see some tips always. So yeah, Bea, don't hesitate to make this format as possible as it could be.
Great track Rabea and thank you for walking us through your mix!
I love the death guitar section. funnily enough I was using your plug in yesterday and shifting an octave down for a meshuggah inspired section, but you just showed me tthe in plugin eq I was missing. Thank you so much for all you do

Incredible song Rabea!!!!! Great masterclass of a masterpiece. I love hearing you play more lead on your recent tracks.
Amazing stuff ! Thanks, master Rabea!

Oh, and the song has been on heavy rotation in my car since its release. :)
Great video as always Rabea.
Well done Rabea very good music piece sounds awesome man!.
This sort of stuff is always super helpful.

Me as one man band. I really appreciated the mixing details. Thank you Rabea!!!
Wow that's super cool, interesting to see how doubling up the drum samples made the sound so much fuller.
This sounds killer. Thanks for the explanation! GGD trick really cool.
Great stuff, Rabea!
Lots more of these please! Your mixes sound great
heard this explained a thousand times, but this hit different. Instantly replicated 🤘
sounds fantastic......you are the vibe king
Love it! Awesome composition and sound. Cheers from France 💜
Wow loved the song, great beat!

No where to comment about Grinding Gears Vol 4 - the ending to Collateral Damage is just insane. I cant get enough!
Really enjoyed this thank you!
Very instructive and inspiring video 👍
THANK YOU BEAAAA!
You're masterbuss top-down plugins is pretty intense EQ wise, but yeah if it works, it works!! Sounding good anyway! Keep it up 🔥
Nice!
Great walk-through! Would be great with a "Recording / Mixing" playlist!
Love your work Rabea!

smash and grab still killing it
this is so cool

Your bass tones are always so utterly nasty 🤘😤🤘
Sensacional ❤

Good shit man 😝
That death git part so effing wicked 💀

Like the Soothe.★
cool
Super cool Rabea!

Saving on audio engine load + Sounds so good, why not!
I really love your songs, keep them coming!
Rock on!
Awesome content loving the mix breakdowns. How do you run Neural DSP standalone into a virtual mixer in Logic Pro?
20:22 I love the fact that you consider this bass tone as a "clean bass".🤣 Sounds great though!
Sounds great. Curious why you didn't print the drum tracks? was the latency good enough with them?
Great video! Thanks for the insight! I'm curious, did you get this mastered or did you master it yourself? I'd love to know what your final level was when you submitted it to streaming platforms. 😊
Thanks!
Anyone else so entirely lost on music production that even this very well put together and described video means absolutely nothing?
Thanks for this, I'm only just getting back to mixing and certainly not a pro. I Wish UAD would release "FATSO" in Native format............Do more vid's like this dude........I'm sponging this stuff up !
Love the song. And stunning guitar tones :-) You look tired mate🙂
I can't unhear MJ's Beat It from 6:50 onwards ahaks!
Haha
Hey Rabea, could you do a run-through of how you edit videos like this?
Hey Bea, how are those Gene's treating ya mate. I believe those are the 41s right. I have a Neumann 2.1 setup at my Home Studio. Planning to get a pair of 41s with a 7350. But they will leave me broke as hell.
Interesting information, brother. It would be cool if we could also sit in on some of your writing sessions-- once the song has been released and copyrighted, etc, if you're worried about that kind of thing.
I would SO SO SO MUCH LOVE to get access to your backing tracks (minus lead guitar), and i would definitely pay for it!!
Not sure if this has been covered before...but what gear are you using to play-in your drums? What's the e-kit your playing and how are you getting midi into logic?
Question...when you are tracking your rhythm guitars are you using different amps? Or are you just panning the same amp L/R to make it sound wider?
Do you draw automation or use a write fader controller? Epic mix.
Am I missing something or is my Logic just not up to date? I can have a stereo bus for guitars in Logic X now?
Yeah haha! When you create a bus, you can check if it’s mono or stereo. Near the top of the strip where you’d see input - should have a mono stereo button.
@@RabeaMassaad Oh word. Thanks, dude.
Would love to see mix breakdown on parade of rage
I NEED THAT DRUM PRESET! 😮
Dorje is one of my favourite bands
My favourite guitarist rabea!
How many cortex's do you possess Mr. Massaad?
Thank you for the share! What bit rate and khz resolution do you record at?
Thanks!
24Bit - 44.1
Thank you. I would have guessed 32 Bit at 48khz. Amazing the results you got!@@RabeaMassaad
do you only do instrumental music? Do want vocals, or can't find a fitting vocalist?
