It was this advice that helped me get a GS13. I applied for a GS12 got the job then a GS13 came up while I was awaiting a final job offer. I went ahead and applied and got the GS13 and took it!! Life changing difference of $16,000
The career ladder is nice. That is how I started. I went back to school and at the time the agency I work for had openings for recent grads. I interviewed like 6 or 7 times, (sorry can't remember). 1 job offer. I was happy I was selected and love where I work. I have been promoted outside the career ladder. I just accepted a job offer that enters into another career ladder position. There are two take aways I will share, Once you have been hired, volunteer. I found this hard to do at first and had to get this out of my mindset since I am a veteran. Once I started volunteering is when I started being promoted. My second take away is always have a positive attitude even when things get a little rough.
It's sad that it's so difficult to move from one field to the next, even with a Master's degree. I'm a GS 12 and have been applfor years to move from Logistics to HR, which is what I have a degree in. I keep being told I'll have to start as a 7 or 9 or go into a Pacer program. It's absolutely ridiculous! The Federal government is a joke at times!
Armand, I am currently a federal employee, employed in an agency that I cannot disclose at this time. Basically, I work in claims. I am a GS12, step 6. I am trying to laterally transfer over to CMS as a Health Insurance Specialist. I have an MBA w/ a concentration in healthcare mgt. I have extensive medical knowledge and this fall 2024, I will be going back to nursing school. My question is, why is it so hard to laterally transfer over to a different federal agency, like CMS? I have even applied for a lower GS level position 7-11, and I still got rejected. Please comment. Thanks.
Are you in the 0962 job series? It's hard to say without looking at the exact job announcements you are applying to and then looking at your resume. My first reaction is that the problem could be in your resume. Why are you focused on the CMS? Why not try to get a GS-13 in your existing agency or another agency? How many times have you applied? There are so many questions before I can give any advice. But if you really want it, do not give up.
I'm currently in the 2005 job series Supply Technician at a GS-5 currently. And I think the highest i've seen 2005 goes to is a GS-7. I've not seen anything about GS-7 for the 2005 job series. What series would you recommend once I get to the point of applying to a GS-9 after I reach the GS-7 grade level?
Hey there! Just wanted your opinion about getting into the government with a contract specialist position. There seems to be a lot of them and my logic is I could apply to more positions with better odds. I want a fully remote position and I do know that typically with an abundance of certain positions it usually means it’s a crappy position that no one wants. The main goal is to get your opinion about those positions and if they are a great entryway into the government. Thanks!!!
The issue is "remote" every dept needs a lot of 1102s because the govt has a ton of contracts. It isn't that the job is necessarily bad, you have to be able to read legal language and explain things to people and understand a lot of ins-and-outs of contracting. But 1102 remote??? very few and going to be extremely competitive.
Hi, I’m new to the fed and started in GS9 step 10 and not in a promotion ladder. After 12 months, can I apply to a GS 13 position if I qualify or does it have to be a GS 11 position.
What about all the job hopping? Does that make a difference? So many talk about going from one agency to another. And what do you say in a job interview when you KNOW you are only going to apply for something else as soon as you are 'in'.?? I mean really, you aren't going to say "in 5 years I see myself in another role in another city"...!! I have an interview coming up and that "where do you see yourself in 5 years" is a real pain in the rear because I don't do well at lying and I really don't KNOW where I see myself in 5 years.
@@anniesshenanigans3815 I wouldn't mention that at the interview, but people move around a lot if they want to grow. The government isn't like the private sector when it comes to seeking a new job. I've always been open about my intentions and never had a supervisor be mad about it. My supervisor has been in his position and is equally open about seeking to move up. It's actually encouraged.
Only if the job caps at 6 or 7. You can still apply for a 7 or 9 job. A graduate degree also makes you immediately qualified for a 9. My coworker was a 5 at the post office overseas and got a 9 position when he moved to the area all because he has an MBA and is a spouse.
@fredlwal I think location plays a part in getting stuck. I was gs6 in ohio applying to over 300 accounting jobs. I couldn't even get interviewed. I started applying outside my city and started getting interviews. 3rd interview landed me a 7/9/11 in Alabama. I just interviewed for a gs12 today and stand a good chance of getting it. Huntsville has high demand for government workers. After only 4 months here my wife got a 7/9/11.

I am proof of this climbing the ladder, I climbed from gs 7-15 in 9 years and changing 4 agencies and different departments

Want to thank you Armand, just submitted my superior qualifications memo, fingers crossed.
Good life advice 👍🏽

Hello, how do you like working in logistics? I’m an 1102 contract specialist looking to transfer into logistics.
@@Fedjanewhy? 😂😂😂😂
@@hihaters2004 Being an 1102 in the DoD is miserable!
It's okay, I'm prior military, so I want to do something else which is why I'm over "Logistics " I would like to get into HR@Fedjane
HR doesn't know what they are talking about 99% of the time.
Great video! Thanks for the very helpful info.
Do the 12 months have to be consecutive?
Why is the FEMA Local Hire position not on any ladder? No classification at all

Just keep breathing. You will climb the government ladder. Especially after tenure.

You will need to go for the gs11, unless the 13 has an education requirement that substitutes time in grade.
Thank you.

Not all jobs have mobility if you’re a GS six or seven you’re pretty much stuck there for 100 years
@@coastallivingmississippi188 why is that?
