Bought the Cheapest Rolls Royce - Will it Run? 1971 RR Silver Shadow Saved from the Crusher!

  • We bought a Rolls Royce as an experiment to learn about how the systems in these cars worked and with a simple goal to get the car running again. This car was purchased from a towing company who removed the car from a homeowners backyard; it is unknown how many years this car sat parked. Regardless the towing company figured it might be worth something and instead of sending it straight to the crusher they brought it to their lot. We were the lucky(?) buyers of the car. Will we get it running again?
    UPDATE: We never expected this video to gain traction as much as it did - our first 1 MILLION view video! We've gotten a lot of comments about restoring the car, etc and there is simply not enough ROI to justify spending thousands of dollars into restoring this car that's super rough.

    You guys seem like good mechanics but why not clean all the debris out of the engine bay before you start opening up engine components allowing dirt to contaminate them. A car sitting that long needs all the fluids flushed, gas tank removed and fuel lines replaced before attempting a start.

    • @truethought369
      @truethought369 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      You think: a good mechanic, never strips down anything until it is very clean! Also once the work area is clean, you make sure You are as clean as a surgeon.
      Would You let some scruffy person to operate on you?
      Retired now, but thank you for saving the good Mechanic's names. 😁🔧🇬🇧

      The gas tank and the fuel lines are completely rusted through as are most of the brake lines. The car runs and drives now on a boat tank. Our goal with anything we get in is to verify that it will even run before spending any real time or effort on it. After we verified that we did go back and clean the car as well as the engine bay. RR where we are are not really worth anything this car is really really rough and will never be restored.

    Now I know I'm really old, seeing this car in this shape! Back in 71 my uncle bought a brand new Rolls Royce silver shadow. I remember seeing it the very next day. I was 12. My God, what a magnificent car it was. And the beautiful leather interior...just smelled like.....MONEY. I loved riding in it and driving it when I turned 16. I actually took my DMV driving test in it! He traded it in after 7 years a bought a Porsche 911. That car was awesome, but in a much different way. Yes, I wish you could have seen this car in 1971.

    How does an expensive and valuable car just get abandoned to deteriorate and end up in a state like that?
    And was the oil and filter changed? I do hope so. The engine is the most expensive part - just putting in petrol, connecting up a new battery and trying to start it with sludged up oil and a cruddy blocked oil filter is probably the quickest way to damage an engine that’s not been run for what looks like a decade or so.

    • @zaimkarii1756
      @zaimkarii1756 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, the mineral oils was the most problematic and expensive

    • @3rdworldgarage450
      @3rdworldgarage450 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      They really aren't that valuable when they get a bit older. Like any car, a Rolls Royce can become mechanically totalled due to the cost of repairs. A good Rolls like this is only worth maybe $25k in pristine condition. When it was parked it was probably worth less than $10k. Parts alone to fix the Citroen-esque Hydropneumatic suspension (licensed from Citroen) can exceed that. Add faded paint or a worn interior and a luxury car that is out of fashion and it just isn't worth it. Some parts, like the Chevy truck A/C system, some of the internals of the GM TH400 transmission or the Lucas (or Delco) alternator are cheap- the bespoke parts are not.

      First sensible post in a while. They should have changed the oil and filter, removed the spark plugs and poured some light oil into the cylinders. It should have then been left for a time and turned over to ensure that the piston rings weren't stuck to the bores. Sadly, the first thing people say when they get a car which hasn't been used for a time is "let's find out if it will start". What's the hurry? Better to spent a few hours rather than risk doing damage.

This one was picked up by a towing company - I'm sure they got paid to get rid of the car off the property. We still have the car; we have been looking for another set of wheels for it. This one is too bad to restore and for us there isn't a return on investment to make it nice. There is another nice example that's on our channel that has been for sale for months now with no takers at 8500.

    make sure you use the correct brake fluid RR363! I'm sure the whole brake/self leveling system will require a total going through with new hoses, etc!

    • @ResurrectedGarage
      @ResurrectedGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      On this particular car we eventually found that the brake lines are rotted through and even after filling the reservoir with fluid fluid and running the engine for quite some time it failed to even leak fluid which tells us we have even more problems with brake pumps and possibly other components as well. We are going to plumb the car for a standard master cylinder in the near future

    A near neighbour in western France had this model but in a lighter blue colour. He'd brought it back from Saudi Arabia where he'd been working as an engineer on oil refineries.
    Bought from new by a sheik who had let his children use it as a plaything - the leather seats were torn, tires were slashed and they'd carved their names into the walnut door cappings; it was a right mess.
    Took him 3 years to bring it back into shape but it looked divine. Drove out to the big supermarket out side of town and, while he was inside shopping, some idiot lost control of their shopping trolley and put a dent in the driver's door!
    Claude would never refer to it as a "Rolls" - his car was always his "Royce".
    "Royce was an engineer, Rolls was just a car salesman!" he once told me.
    His next project was a London black cab taxi.

      Goodness! The labor for working on Rolls Royce’s is astronomical, there are very few shops around us that will even work on them. That was part of the reason that when we found this one we wanted to purchase it so we could learn the car. It really isn’t that bad to work on it’s just the parts are a little expensive and take time to get.

    Those side draught SU carbs are dead simple. They were used on everythings from various Austin/Morris cars up to Rolls Royce engines.
    Making sure that there is fresh oil in the dampers (the pot shaped aluminium thing with the plastic/bakelite cap on the top) was essential to make sure they work.

    • @ResurrectedGarage
      @ResurrectedGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Getting the dampers clean and moving freely again was key in getting the car fired up and running. The enrichment system for cold start is not working and one of the floats is cracked and sinking causing fuel leakage if you let the bowl fill
