This one is too bad to restore and for us there isn't a return on investment to make it nice. Wow, good luck you have quite a journey ahead of you. I know these cars very well. I know you will enjoy the hard earned pleasure of your first drive. I have great respect for you for taking on this challenge. Boy,,, this is not going to be easy.
How does an expensive and valuable car just get abandoned to deteriorate and end up in a state like that? And was the oil and filter changed? I do hope so. The engine is the most expensive part - just putting in petrol, connecting up a new battery and trying to start it with sludged up oil and a cruddy blocked oil filter is probably the quickest way to damage an engine that’s not been run for what looks like a decade or so.
They really aren't that valuable when they get a bit older. Like any car, a Rolls Royce can become mechanically totalled due to the cost of repairs. A good Rolls like this is only worth maybe $25k in pristine condition. When it was parked it was probably worth less than $10k. Parts alone to fix the Citroen-esque Hydropneumatic suspension (licensed from Citroen) can exceed that. Add faded paint or a worn interior and a luxury car that is out of fashion and it just isn't worth it. Some parts, like the Chevy truck A/C system, some of the internals of the GM TH400 transmission or the Lucas (or Delco) alternator are cheap- the bespoke parts are not.
First sensible post in a while. They should have changed the oil and filter, removed the spark plugs and poured some light oil into the cylinders. It should have then been left for a time and turned over to ensure that the piston rings weren't stuck to the bores. Sadly, the first thing people say when they get a car which hasn't been used for a time is "let's find out if it will start". What's the hurry? Better to spent a few hours rather than risk doing damage.
The Roller has seen better days. Good how you got the engine running. It sounds sick though. 😷 They generally need a specialist mechanic, but you guys are doing well. Nice RR Silver Shadow. 👌
A near neighbour in western France had this model but in a lighter blue colour. He'd brought it back from Saudi Arabia where he'd been working as an engineer on oil refineries. Bought from new by a sheik who had let his children use it as a plaything - the leather seats were torn, tires were slashed and they'd carved their names into the walnut door cappings; it was a right mess. Took him 3 years to bring it back into shape but it looked divine. Drove out to the big supermarket out side of town and, while he was inside shopping, some idiot lost control of their shopping trolley and put a dent in the driver's door! Hey, redone in Flat Black and this could be used in a remake of the old James Brolin horror flick "The Car"! Drop in a big crate motor and a 9" rear end and hit the road.
A friend bought a Corniche coupe at auction. He started it up and the smoke cloud of blue smoke. This was years ago. When the bill for the motor rebuild exceeded what he paid for the car he let the mechanic keep it after paying $5,000 on account... scary expensive
Goodness! The labor for working on Rolls Royce’s is astronomical, there are very few shops around us that will even work on them. That was part of the reason that when we found this one we wanted to purchase it so we could learn the car. It really isn’t that bad to work on it’s just the parts are a little expensive and take time to get.
On this particular car we eventually found that the brake lines are rotted through and even after filling the reservoir with fluid fluid and running the engine for quite some time it failed to even leak fluid which tells us we have even more problems with brake pumps and possibly other components as well. We are going to plumb the car for a standard master cylinder in the near future
Funny but I said the same thing. My dad had a 73 and a 74 and the worst problems were electrical and the hydraulics. He bought Girling oil by the case.
Like most English cars at that time probably had Lucas electric as a majority of the electrical make up. Lucas electric was terrible. Lucas electric also did freezers refrigerators etc. There is a saying I've heard for years, that the reason why the British drink warm beer is because of Lucas electric. Good luck with your getting this car going.
I read once that Brits used to refer to Joseph Lucas, the founder of Lucas Electronics, as 'the prince of darkness'. Because of all the european cars running around with no headlights because of defective Lucas electrical system parts.
There's a few RR junkyards on the east coast as well as website that ships from the UK. We've worked on a few other RR for customers that we've bought parts for and it was no big deal. For this blue one our plan is to hot rod it and mostly use the body.
I looked at an '80 R-R guy said it had new tires and fresh paint job ? But the car hadn't been driven in 9 years ? Paint job was a definate 20 footer !
Flying Spares in the UK is a great source of parts: new and experienced. Also Albers in Zionsville, Indiana. Internet. Manuals and tech info ate on the Australian Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club web site; free; also great info and advice on their forum. Helped me a lot with my 1970. You will learn a lot if you don’t “quit before the miracle”!
Thank you, we have ordered a few things from Flying Spares for the black RR we've uploaded videos on. We did get this car running and driving under it's own power in later videos.
Those side draught SU carbs are dead simple. They were used on everythings from various Austin/Morris cars up to Rolls Royce engines. Making sure that there is fresh oil in the dampers (the pot shaped aluminium thing with the plastic/bakelite cap on the top) was essential to make sure they work.
Getting the dampers clean and moving freely again was key in getting the car fired up and running. The enrichment system for cold start is not working and one of the floats is cracked and sinking causing fuel leakage if you let the bowl fill
The best thing I ever did with a British car was traded it for a Suzuki.Wich I traded in for another Chevy for my wife.Who We', eventually traded for Some Other's
We actually got it running pretty good at this point. This one surprisingly doesn’t seem to have any such valves. Working on the brakes currently. There will be an update video coming soon that will hopefully show it driving down the road.
@@ResurrectedGarage awesome. I brought one back to life a few years ago. The braking system seems complicated but it really isn’t. Simple hydraulics. There are some good animated diagrams online
You're very wrong sir, my uncle bought a new 71 silver shadow that he kept for 7 years. I had 1st hand involvement with the car, spending thousands of miles riding in it. and it was magnificent, and he had no serious issues with it. It had around 80.000 miles on it when he traded it off. I actually took my drivers test in it when I was 16.
Never mind fiddling with the points : the FIRST thing to do is clean out all the grass and dirt from the engine bay - otherwise to do anything else risks contaminating the innards with foreign bodies
Gor !!!!!....... Cylinders could do with release oil then -2stroke and spun over to oil the bores and rings !!!! .... Then after the smoke has gone ---BETTER ENGINE !!!! ... Be great if restored !!!!!😊
This video is over two years old at this point. As time has went on we've upgraded film equipment as budget has allowed and have more experience with editing. We started with zero experience in filming and an extremely outdated GoPro and phone. Our videos have improved significantly since this one was filmed; if we could go back and re-do this video with the experience and equipment we have now this video would be better. We can't change the past but we can continue to improve and get better.
It is quite common with high end luxury cars, values drop, repair bills stack up and this car having diplomatic plates, there are good odds whoever was responsible for the car went home to their country and just left it.
That was exactly why we ended up getting this car was to learn about it and the special systems it has. It was on its way to be crushed, it's in rough shape. After getting this one we were able to fix 2 RR for customers. Nobody around our area will touch these cars.
We originally bought this car to learn about Rolls and how all the systems worked. Once we got it running we decided to make it a long term build and hot rod it. There is a black RR that's in our videos that we've did some work on but it's a much nicer car that we kept original. The nice one has been for sale for a few months now with no takers. This blue one is really bad and would be a terrible car to invest money in to restore because there is no ROI. We learned early on that there is a very niche market for these cars.
Our goal with this one is to get it running and driving good enough to take it through a drive through (right hand drive fun) and then send it on its way to another home. :-)
Even lying in dort and dust, Roles Royce remains a Roles Royce. Should be maintained and fired up with proper prepration. Chech fuel line, tank, carbs, ignition, engine oil, etc etc before hitting start.
Absolutely, fuel lines were rotted, carbs stuck, ignition not firing and. Oil was full, which was actually checked before we handed over cash for the car
The expired credit cards in the trunk dated back to the mid 80's. The car was bought from someone who had already pulled it from the weeds, unfortunately we didnt get that privilege this time
Cannot believe there working on a car without cleaning the engine bay out first … Dad always said SEPTICS can be so stupid at times it hurt to watch them
We bought this car for experimental purposes, at the time we weren't even sure it would run. Our goal was to see if it would run again then proceed with cleaning the interior/exterior of the car.
You arent wrong, this should really serve as a PSA to anyone that is shopping for a RR to buy one that is already decent. At least then you can forgo spending the large piles of money until something goes wrong.

Hey, redone in Flat Black and this could be used in a remake of the old James Brolin horror flick "The Car"! Drop in a big crate motor and a 9" rear end and hit the road.
I used to work for a collector in Santa Monica who had a bunch of them, parts are very expensive.
Great work!!! I also loved to see ya'll put a bible verse in there, and a great one at that. God bless.
Thank you! You too!
Just ran across this video today ,nice lookin old ride .
Sweet! Thanks, this one is still hanging around. It's one of our long term builds.
Just needs a little TLC and it'll be fine, might need alot but once it's been given TLC it'll be just fine and run smoothly just like it did in 1971
Great job getting it running before the hurricane arrived.
Thanks
Tam benim arabam eski olacak hemen çalışmayacak biraz uğraştıracak❤😂😅😢😮
Oh I remember that model. It was originally named "Silver Mist" but then it was learned what "mist" means in German (s__t).
Have had Eleven Bentley s and rolls made big profits with exception of a Turbo R.
Yes, this seems to be a problem in our former colonies where skills are lacking.
I had to hang a pair of vise grips on the end of My key to start and keep my 73 silver shadow running.x
Easy fix I have done a couple
Ahh The Rolls Royce Silver Money Pit...
How much do you want for it!
Really enjoyed your video!! Beautiful car in a sad neglected state...putting life in the old car is giving care and hope!!🤪😁😁
Thanks, we love seeing people in here that are happy to see the car come back to life even though a full restoration might not be in the cards
Wow when a woman wash the car i see such a nice cloud moving looks great and nice video quality.
Glad you enjoyed
make sure you use the correct brake fluid RR363! I'm sure the whole brake/self leveling system will require a total going through with new hoses, etc!
Very interesting and fun. Thanks.
There's a few more update videos on the RR, we did get it to move around on it's own power finally.
Thanks for the quote from the Bible very precious
Like most English cars at that time probably had Lucas electric as a majority of the electrical make up. Lucas electric was terrible. Lucas electric also did freezers refrigerators etc. There is a saying I've heard for years, that the reason why the British drink warm beer is because of Lucas electric. Good luck with your getting this car going.
Got to use that joke just the other day 😂
@@ManicWrench that is cool sir
I read once that Brits used to refer to Joseph Lucas, the founder of Lucas Electronics, as 'the prince of darkness'. Because of all the european cars running around with no headlights because of defective Lucas electrical system parts.
@@m6780 Hopefully they have fixed Lucas electric. Thanks for that information it as funny.
Yeah Lucas the prince of darkness 😂😂
Can hardly wait to see where you buy parts at?????
There's a few RR junkyards on the east coast as well as website that ships from the UK. We've worked on a few other RR for customers that we've bought parts for and it was no big deal. For this blue one our plan is to hot rod it and mostly use the body.
You were VERY lucky that steel cable did not break my friend .......
Yes, we used that winch for a little while until we were able to replace it with a much safer winch.
Always, always lube each cylinder before cranking motor!!
Yes 🇳🇴
I looked at an '80 R-R guy said it had new tires and fresh paint job ? But the car hadn't been driven in 9 years ? Paint job was a definate 20 footer !
Y'all be careful, making me nervous with that winch cable under so much stress with no blanket on it.
Thanks
Hello Graham how are you doing 😊
@@ResurrectedGarage Engine oil in the SU dampers on R-R
The best thing I ever did with a British car was traded it for a Suzuki.Wich I traded in for another Chevy for my wife.Who We', eventually traded for Some Other's
Certainly not a project for the faint of heart
Does the grass come with it?
Wouldn’t be surprised if it had a seized valve or two. Very common on these engines after long periods of lay up
We actually got it running pretty good at this point.
If you need any guidance shoot me a note
@@lifeat5knots Thanks. I will keep that in mind. You can never have too much information on these things.
What's the liquid you are spraying while trying to start ?
Check su fuel bowls. Floats could be stuck. Tap fuel pump. It should tick when working.
In the next video/s of this car we get it running and get rid of the SU carbs completely.
An expensive unit in it's day
1970’s cars even Rolls Royce were substandard.
Compared to what?
Never mind fiddling with the points : the FIRST thing to do is clean out all the grass and dirt from the engine bay - otherwise to do anything else risks contaminating the innards with foreign bodies
Gor !!!!!....... Cylinders could do with release oil then -2stroke and spun over to oil the bores and rings !!!!
....
Then after the smoke has gone ---BETTER ENGINE !!!!
...
Be great if restored !!!!!😊
My self I'd have checked for a spark set up a temporary fuel supply and check the oil levels engines were so simple in them days.
We have a boat gas tank we typically run them off of, I couldn't tell if we used it in this video but the videos thereafter we were using it.
Put oil in the "foam" under the caps on those carburetors, otherwise they won't work properly.
The dash pods were very stuck and a major reason the car wouldn't run. unfortunately most of the footage playing with the carbs got lost
My gosh, someone used that Rolls as a planter!
Whatever you do with it will be better than it disappearing from the world altogether
Glad you agree
That’s the best camera work iv ever seen good bye
This video is over two years old at this point. As time has went on we've upgraded film equipment as budget has allowed and have more experience with editing. We started with zero experience in filming and an extremely outdated GoPro and phone. Our videos have improved significantly since this one was filmed; if we could go back and re-do this video with the experience and equipment we have now this video would be better. We can't change the past but we can continue to improve and get better.
Abandoning a car like this is a crime. Whoever did it doesn't understand cars, nor does he like them!
It is quite common with high end luxury cars, values drop, repair bills stack up and this car having diplomatic plates, there are good odds whoever was responsible for the car went home to their country and just left it.
I think I would have written this one off. But we'll see.
6.0 LS swap, original rims with vogues, paint it black and put some decent interior and boom you got a fast luxury car.
Those SU carbs need cleaning up. Clean the needle and free the pump action...
The starter sounds Good
never mess with a rolls engine UNLESS you know about rolls royce they are very special .
That was exactly why we ended up getting this car was to learn about it and the special systems it has. It was on its way to be crushed, it's in rough shape. After getting this one we were able to fix 2 RR for customers. Nobody around our area will touch these cars.
Restoring a Rolls is a great way to make a small fortune........from a large one
It’s my dream Car😍😍😍😍😍
What’s the plan with the beaut
Our goal with this one is to get it running and driving good enough to take it through a drive through (right hand drive fun) and then send it on its way to another home. :-)
@@ResurrectedGarage that’s so cool, I’m here for it!
I admire them its going to cost them a fortune to get reasonable looking I' have a79 shadow I have had it for many years
place called intro car has parts for rolls ,not sure if I spelled that right but it may help you to find it ,cool car
Thank you, I will check into that
why start on the ignition ,before checking the fluids?
selfmade mechanics quite skilled
The fluids were checked before purchasing the car.
@@ResurrectedGarage thanks
@@ResurrectedGarage I think as the Lady is still in place there is no worry about the fluids
You should use R-R 363 in the brake system
Even lying in dort and dust, Roles Royce remains a Roles Royce. Should be maintained and fired up with proper prepration. Chech fuel line, tank, carbs, ignition, engine oil, etc etc before hitting start.
Absolutely, fuel lines were rotted, carbs stuck, ignition not firing and. Oil was full, which was actually checked before we handed over cash for the car
Wow is that the big end knocking
Where was the car found and how long was left there?.
The expired credit cards in the trunk dated back to the mid 80's. The car was bought from someone who had already pulled it from the weeds, unfortunately we didnt get that privilege this time
Till I had all the legal paperwork, I wouldn't touch the thing with a hundred foot barge poll.
In GA as long as it's pre 1986 all we need is a bill of sale.
Don't you Just Love the Shaddow The REAL ROLLERS 👍
Yes they are beautiful cars!
Those parts are going to be way more expensive than the worth of a proper working same model 2nd hand RR.
You arent wrong, this should really serve as a PSA to anyone that is shopping for a RR to buy one that is already decent. At least then you can forgo spending the large piles of money until something goes wrong.
