ABBA certainly had plenty of hooks and knew how to write a chorus but they were also excellent musicians and used a huge variety of styles and instruments to craft their pop songs. A beautifully crafted ABBA song is "Name of the game" which has several change ups but they weren't just pop or disco, they did some glam rock and prog/soft rock too. For an example of that try "Eagle" (the extended version has a nice guitar solo at the end)

Sometimes it was different from what was going on in the music business, sometimes it wasn't. BUt there was a growth with the group, you can hear if you follow each one of their albums. Lyrics became for evolved and introspective, melodies and instrumentals more varied in styles, vocals experimenting with styles, tones, effects. Where they started and where they ended is an incredible musical journey.
