  • Finally! The all-new Toyota GR Supra, arguably the most eagerly anticipated new car of 2019, is here. And we’ve been driving it - fast. Can it live up to all that hype, which has been building since the FT-1 concept was revealed way back in 2014? And does it deliver like a true JDM driver’s car - or is the BMW connection too hard to hide? Dan Prosser has the answer to all those questions - and more.

      I did a couple of liveries when playing GT Sport today...This car looks amazing in all forms of crazy colours. Chrome red and blue, liquid metal brass and gold. Especially if you make the rear bumper & hood black. Modifications on this car on a purely aesthetic level will be very varied and interesting, that's for sure.

      A track focused "Supra"? Is that what people want from the Supra?
      The old IV (or any supra) was never really a track car. It was a sports tourer (emphasis on tourer) that people made stupid fast. No wonder Toyota lost their way with this car, and Supra-purists hate it.

    A lighter, track focused version will definitely be on the way. Can't expect Toyota to not hold anything back with the base model. Also don't forget that this car was made with tuners in mind. By any subjective comparison it’s a good car, the previous generation car was very very very expensive back in the day and that’s the reason it was not a volume seller..people look back with rose tinted glasses....it achieved cult status only due to the ability of the fabulous engine to be modified easily to 500 plus bhp.... The Zupr4-BAshing is not fair. It's a exciting car with a terrific engine. The probelm is the PRICE. In my country the MRSP starts at 63k Euros. A Corvette C7 Stingray with 460 hp V8 and a big boot started at 70k Euros 2 years ago. And that car you could almost call a supercar (it has beaten the 991.1 Carrera S in track/tests several times).

      This is why I've been saying Toyota should give it more than 335 HP. Well according to a few tests they did...so now I say they should have just rated it at what it clearly has (~410hp) so that it doesn't look so bad compared to other cars in the segment, particularly in America.

    • @mrjjthor

      I doubt it. The only way Toyota can put an S58 engine in the Supra is if BMW puts the same motor in their Z4 according to their contract from what Toyota said. BMW already said they aren't planning to make a Z4M because there's no market for it and its plenty capable with the current set up.
      My guess is Toyota will make a more powerful Supra a few years from now and probably bump the horsepower to like 360-380 with some exterior and suspension updates and call it a day. Toyota is way too cheap and conservative to go all out.

    A good base but I wish they'd made it as a 2+2. If it going to be on the heavy side anyway, as bit more space and 2 more little seats would have made very little ovrall kerb weight penalty. As a pure 2 seater then it makes sense Toyota makes a harder version with a manual gearbox, less weight, bigger brakes and more ower circa 400 bhp. Great review Pistonheads!

      Kev hmmm, the way I see it, most people under 40 don't even know what a manual is. Most older people grew up with manuals. Way back when, all there was were manuals. All Sports cars were only offered in manual. If you are a true enthusiast who loves manuals, I salute you. I get when racing, and races are decided by lap times separated by a 100ths of seconds, that a dual clutch is quicker, but when you are looking for emotional connection and driver involvement, a manual can not be beat. And most people 50 years or older, cut their teeth on manuals.

    I’d probably take this version with the auto - everyday usability and comfort but really good at 8 or 9 10ths when you want it to be? Sounds great to me. I’m not convinced there are as many ‘hardcore’ enthusiasts out there as videos like this purport, and even if there are, they’re still a minority and won’t pay the bills. Want hardcore? Go aftermarket, this platform is literally made for it.

      The new supra has dug itself into my list of attainable dream cars. A car that can give you fun track driving, yet can also sooth you on the streets. & living in the city with horrid traffic jams, that zf8hp sounds like a joy to use.

    First person that's mentioned the suspension setup in any of the reviews I've watched. Disappointing, surely a ground up sports car platform would have dual wishbones? Oh wait I forgot the three series uses this exact setup, must be a coincidence.

    • @TheChannel1978
      @TheChannel1978 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Worth noting Porsche non GT cars also don't have dual wishones. To me that's disappointing as I thought dual wishbones automatically means better dynamic camber. But you'd hope Porsche and/or BMW/Toyotota know better and not put McPhereson in cause it's cheaper/smaller

    Even though I don't really like the way the new Supra looks, I do like this trend of bringing back our beloved 90s Japanese sports car nameplates. Very pleased with the NSX in particular. I wish Honda would give us a new Prelude and/or S2000 (preferably Prelude though)

    i would love a BOV, manual box & a much more expensive but limited lighter chassis version to eliminate certain compromises like thicker door sills for more rigidity but lesser cabin space, better visibility etc, all while maintaining rigidity. considering its a 2 seater, it's not a super light car. i watched the hks video bout them developing their titanium sports muffler for the A90 & the sound is disappointing, it's still a lot of muffling. im guessing they do so as an effort to muff the sound caused by future products like manifold, downpipe, resonator & stuffs. also hoping that aftermarket companies can come up with an aggressive ft-1 inspired front end. lastly, eliminate the artificial engine sound.

    I love the BMW Z4 coupe Supra, at its heart lies a straight six of pure German beef, the best car to come out of Japan in recent time. The e86 Z4 M is a keeper for nostalgic drive.

    There is more to come. It's designed to be tuned by the aftermarket like the previous generation. They tuned it down so that the aftermarket can tune it up without having to destroy its balanced capabilities.

    Lovely in yellow I see why they went this way as opposed to what nissan did with the gtr wanted it more attainable and turn it into more of a sports car as opposed to smacking supercars and there will probably be a faster version as some have dyno the supra and it is running way over quoted figures like 370+ hp and they were sayinf it is a bit restricted up top meaning easy to get to 400+

    Not a bad review. I'd prefer less loud background music drowning your voice. Your points are quite repetitive when it comes to the handling aspects and at times a little contradictory (when talking about very tight corners). I know how hard it must be to put it all together in a short space of time though. It feels more like an editing issue.

    Typical BMW dynamics with the mis-matched brakes, I thought they'd remedied that issue on the 'pokey' models?

    • @andrewnorris5415
      @andrewnorris5415 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This (and the new z4) are surely above most other BMWs. Lower centre of gravity, much stiffer. In common is the 50/50 weight distro. You should drive a supra alongside. BMW are good at engines. This engine should be better as it has been through Toyota's quality checks and improved to be more reliable. Could be a bit too smooth an engine though for this car but it's fine. As this car is really a GT car that handles well.

    • @waynesimpson2074
      @waynesimpson2074 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewnorris5415 '...'BMW are good at engines...'' Hmm? They have a litany of faults on their 'pokey' engines if you wish to look it up...and the brakes? They're well documented as well. This reviewer was being gracious towards the Supra's BMW limitations but he has subtly flagged up his disappointments especially when compared to the launch hype from the manufacturer.

    Sounds like the car you really want is an M2 Competition. Maybe if the Supra was cheaper it would be a good option but at this price point I'll have an M2 any day of the week.

  • @mantazini

    I tell you what , and supra has always been that "Tuners car" . Put Intrax 1k2's better pads and fluid with stickier tyres and stage 1 map and im pretty sure you'll have what youre craving . A sharper , tighter , faster car. None of the M range bmws are all that either, but you put some tasty components on them and theres night and day difference in outcome.
