    Honestly if you did more of these videos, you'd get way more traffic in your channel especially for budget speakers. If there's someone who can do these kinds of video, it's you.
    These videos are also helpful for us who don't keep up with the latest news in speakers.
    I would also love to see a studio monitor recommendations in a future video.

    Bought the Neumi BS5 for my mom who has some hearing challenges. It allowed her to lower the volume significantly while watching tv because of the good vocal clarity. She still enjoys it a year later, and I still am still reasonably impressed when I visit. Great value. I've set it up in two rooms, and it was easy - I'd assume due to the front porting. Thank you for the review!

    This video precisely encapsulates what I've been on the hunt for, straight from the seasoned measurement experts. It's a treasure trove of insights that I've found incredibly enlightening. I find myself wishing for Erin to venture into creating something along these lines. Imagine a succinct compilation of top five picks catered to different financial brackets - budget-friendly, mid-range, and high-end systems. Such a curated list could serve as a fantastic guide for enthusiasts and audiophiles alike, providing a clear roadmap towards making well-informed decisions based on their budget. A brief yet comprehensive rundown like this from Erin could potentially bridge the gap between technical expertise and consumer choice, making the journey of selecting the perfect audio system a smooth and enjoyable experience. The thought of having a go-to list that demystifies the myriad of options available, and that too from a trusted expert like Erin, is indeed exhilarating. It would be a valuable resource for both novices and seasoned audiophiles, simplifying the quest for impeccable sound quality across various price points.

  • @NeilBlanchard
    @NeilBlanchard ปีที่แล้ว +6

    There is a good port modification that doesn't completely alter the tuning/design - in fact it very often solves a bass bump *and* extends the bass a bit lower. And that is a bundle of plastic drinking straws that are cut the the length of the inside of the port, that are friction fit into the port. This has virtually no affect on the port tuning - but adds friction to the air motion, effectively adding mass to the air. This can reduce a bump a bit, and it can extend the response a touch lower, as well. You can put a ring of fiber-reinforced tape around the bundle, and have a tab that sticks out if you want to be able to quickly/easily remove them.

    Agree on your thoughts on Jamos but I bought them anyway (before your review) bc of their aesthetics-they are gorgeous towersr and were under $400 a pair. I also think the C95 and C97s are much better overall (though still bright) than the models youve reviewed too from what i gather as they sound fuller being larger towers with larger drivers and mine are in a large carpeted room which minimizes some of their brightness. Soundstage is excellent too. They also look like $1000 speakers but sound like their price and I'm good with it as the WAF is high and sound 50x better than any soundbar.
    I'm sure Polk Reserve and Wharfedales, etc are better but are much costlier particularly for towers which I'd prefer for living rooms bc I don't want bookshelves/monitors being knocked over by kids or guests. I've got a nice old pair of Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 in the basement for music listening and a Jamo 5.1 speaker set for a projector theater I paid $100 for the set for which works well being I'm rarely downstairs and probably only use 3 times a year.
    I use Kalis in my home studio/office and my bedroom for music listening and mixing which are better but it's not so dramatic a difference in casual listening that I feel like selling the Jamos as they serve the purpose with style and ease.

    Maybe you can get Audio Advice to loan you some of the new entry level Klipsch R40M and R50M, to see if they have also received the improved performance that the new RP500 and 600 got, or if they still have the big suckout in the mids. I know they'll still probably have a hot tweeter, but I'm curious to know if they have improved otherwise

    Years ago I bought a Jamo system. Two fronts and a subwoofer. Weak. Those things could not take any power before they broke up. They were not cheap and they last about an hour before I brought them back. Ever since I won't touch anything by them. And since your reviewed recommendation falls in line with my experience, it's apparent they really haven't changed much. I've heard good things about the emotiva, but you'll never find any at a reasonable price since they've been reviewed so favorably.
    Good reviews have an effect.

    I picked up a Kali 6 v2 as the cheapest decent option for some medium volume music in the kitchen. A bit of EQ can help brighten it a little and ease off below 40 Hz to balance the sheer bass depth with the distortion you get at this volume. Works out well for the money (though meh on the looks). And there's barely any hiss. I'd be ok with using a pair for home studio work if I were on a really tight budget.
    Note that the beamforming is quite tight - it works ok in my kitchen because I can have it at a far wall (4m or so) to allow the beam to better cover the working area.

      @dananskidolf and/or @Erin's audio corner - I'm new to this hobby and was wondering what is the most cost effective way to to EQ (1) powered speakers and (2) passive speakers? Perhaps it's the same method for both? Thank you in advance.

    • @dananskidolf
      @dananskidolf ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hazay19 I have a Roon subscription, which I use for headphones and speakers all over the house, but it's not cheap. I've looked at a few other options.
      Most powered speakers these days seem to have active or digital crossovers and some way to tune it on the back. The Kali has this so my EQ is really just fine tuning, and a little to taste and for the room. It also has bass/treble +/-2dB switches. But normally 'bass' and 'treble' are too broad and you really want parametric EQ.
      Before Roon I was using a PC with Reaper DAW running and a loopback from my audio interface so I could apply EQ with a VST plugin. That's not usually practical - I could only do this at my desk, and only because I had all those things already. On a computer APO Equalizer is a better way if you want it on all the time. There are also some OSes for Raspberry Pi that turn it into a streamer with EQ, but that device is in short supply right now.
      I've heard great things about the devices from miniDSP. A lot of people seem to be using these for EQ, especially for crossovers. The lower end models seem reasonably priced, but if you have several systems, Roon starts to look better value as one Roon server processes DSP for all players on the network. The more advanced miniDSP models also support Dirac, which should offer pretty great tuning to a device and the room, but again is getting expensive.
      One other thing I looked into was just using an old phone with some EQ app on it as a streamer. Wavelet looked to be a good app for this. Unfortunately I need a newer version of Android for it.
      Hope you are able to get a good solution working :)

      @@Hazay19 Forgot to say, regarding active vs passive, EQ is done before amplification so it'll be the same either way, besides the active one likely having some form of on-board EQ as I mentioned above.

    I think this format is totally justified (actually, a very welcomed summary!) given your extensive measurements and experience with so many budget models.
    Surprised you didn't include the JBL 305P Mk2
    P.S. Does the tower version Polk XT60 also deserve a sub-$400 shout-out? Seems pretty decent according to your measurements.

      I think the Kali LP-6 is much better than the 305P for just a little bit more money. If you're on a tight budget the 1st generation of LP-6 should still be better than the 305P while costing similar amount.

      Just an FYI, unless they have updated it with a v2.0 or "2nd Wave" version, the Kali Audio Bluetooth Receiver/Volume Knob/Monitor Controller was tested with measurements on ASR and was found to have subpar performance. It's too bad because otherwise it's a slick and useful product.
