  • The reaction from the last episode I recorded with Becki Houlston has been unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.
I’m still receiving messages from victims of narcissistic abuse today, over 5 months after the episode went live.
I wanted to get Becki back on to talk about another of her specialist subjects: Trauma.
As a life coach and therapist, Becki has heard it all, and this episode is full of powerful information for anyone who’s witnessed the immediate and long term effects of Trauma.
If you need immediate support on any the issues discussed in this podcast, call Samaritans for free on 116 123

An absent father can be detrimental but a present father that makes you feel anxious and worthless through childhood can be even more damaging.

This episode spoke to me on a personal level. Everyday i wake up wondering what life would be if I wasn't wired this way. I'm drowned with anxiety in every interaction and only feel safe when i'm alone. I got goosebumps from this episode. Thanks for it

Flippin hell Dodge. What an episode. I am the youngest of four kids from a loving family. I’ve had my family try to analyse my behaviour most my life (53 now). I joined the army at 16 and caused havoc there and caused myself lots of problems through violence and having fun. The army in the 80’s and 90’s was not an environment where you discussed your feelings. Any weakness was dealt with by the troop.
This has made me think about my behaviour and why I did what I did. I think I did it because I wanted to and for the buzz, or did I???
I am alright now, senior manager at a logistics firm, 10/10 wife who I have been with for 32 years. Two great girls. But I still have a rogue side I try to keep control of.
Man, this was a strong podcast!!

In Tai chi it's taught exactly what your saying here. That pur nervous systems log our old trauma. It's quite common for someone new that is dedicated to the art will randomly start crying and things like this. It's said that's you opening up that old chi line letting out the old trauma. And the whole point is to work through your body clearing out everything.
Obviosly that's out there talking about chi ect however anyone looking for something to help go train tai chi. It helps a lot.

Thank you so much for these interviews Dodge,I’ve just fished watching the entire set and I can honestly say it’sa totally changed my life for the better by helping me understand I’m not alone in things that happened in my childhood. It’s almost as if all your interviewees are what my Dad should have been later in life since he also totally turned his life around and went back to be the Dad he’d been before the madness(drinking/resentment/violent abuse) started. I’m a Paediatric nurse and became one because of my childhood I felt I understood how childhood traumas can go in to effect a persons entire life so I try to make every child I meet have a positive experience.I clearly recognize some behaviors some children I’ve nursed who it emerged had problems at home. Your channel is in fact a safe space in itself, non judge-mental or prejudiced and where people can be open, frank and honest.Beki is such an amazing Lady, this hour long interview has addressed 48 years of having being lost in an emotional wilderness.I’ve wanted to hear what she explained since that 9 year kid hearing Dad beat on Mum So thank you Dodge, all your guests and in particular Becki. ❤❤❤

It’s good Trauma is being covered for civilians, as well as the military, in these podcasts. Trauma can actually happen in the womb as well - the foetus’ nervous system is just as developed then as it is when they are born. So if the mother experiences a deeply traumatic event while pregnant, or there is addiction etc, this can create a traumatised baby - a child being born with an overactive central nervous system and amygdala. There is also birth Trauma. And Trauma that is inherited (ancestral) through the genes: genetic Trauma. The latter is a new area of research with world leading Trauma experts; who also look at Epigenetics where there is Trauma in individuals.
The key is recognising the symptoms - as Trauma is stored in the body, particularly where events occur in a young human being before the brain is fully developed to remember events (by the age of ten at the latest. Brain development varies in each individual). So we cannot always tell what happened, but we can help ourselves and others (if one is a therapist) understand their Trauma and resolve it in a carefully managed way, using various forms of support and therapeutic modalities suited to that person and their specific Trauma (for example one would NOT use breathing techniques with someone whose Trauma is related to breathing). There is still so much to learn. And the more people share this knowledge and educate the world about Trauma, the more we understand each other and the people around us: why everyone behaves the way they do when it’s challenging for them or their health. This compassionate understanding is the key to a peaceful and knowledgable society. Thank you for talking about it. See if you can get Gabor Maté on the show! Or one of his contemporaries.

Dodge very hard hitting in many many ways I cannot believe what's being said I can truly heart felt. My kids got took away in 2011 by my ex my 6 Yr old son kicked and punched his mom, nan, grandad and threw bricks at the neighbours I remember coming from work one Saturday lunchtime and I could he someone swearing and shouting it was my ex dragging my son as she was swearing at him in front of me. I told her to stop it. She said you have him I cannot deal with him.
I bought him up from 2011 twelve months ago he passed out a became a royal marine commando, I'm sorry to say to join the military you need a certain mindset. Thankyou again Dodge.

Women have *zero* tolerance for weakness in men. IF a woman abuses her man, it's because he has in some way failed her. It's simple enough, women depend (what year it is is irrelevant the wiring and dynamic hasn't changed) on men for their (and their childrens) _survival. Which means the man has to be strong in ALL areas. That's just the way it is. That said, IF a woman is abusing a man mentally and emotionally, his response after a while, will be to beat the crap out of her because he lacks the tools needed to deal with her mental and emotional abuse. Women own the mental, linguistic and psychological realm. Whereas we men own the physical realm. Until discussions like this _recognize_ what I have brought up here (all of which is 100% true) and until they recognize that the sexes are very much different, more different than they are alike, as different as night and day (which is also why they are complementary) things will never change for the better. Not ever. Also, they way the two sexes process emotions etc is very very veeeeery much different. Unfortunately today men are looked upon as dysfunctional just because they do NOT process these things in ways women do.
